    collards and kale

Collards are a bit more bitter than kale. Cook them longer to mellow the bitterness, or peppery taste. To appease my spouse, I saute an onion in olive oil in a wide saute pan, add the greens, stir until they start to wilt, add vegetable stock & cover. Just keep cooking until they are mellow...

    Another dog post.....Runts?

Both of my dogs were runts. They turned out to be the tallest & most muscular females from each of their litters. Amazing would good nutrition & lots of exercise can do. Debra

    Video Recommendation for Seniors (Male)?

Check Gilad's workouts for either of your parents. Kathy Smith is also very doable. Another vote for Leslie Sansome for your mom. If I were to chose a Cathe for them, probably the Pyramids. They could use body weight only or go very light for the standing leg work. They might not like the...

I would like a strength rotation for my teenage son...

A-Jock Annette, I'm not questioning your expertise, but I am curious. Why would pilates be harmful to a growing child? My gym offers a pilates mat classes for 8-13 year olds. After that, they're allowed to attend adult classes with a parent. The summer youth fitness camps also include...

    Edamane

I serve the edamame pods for an appetizer. I blanch frozen pods in boiling, salted water for about 4 minutes, then shock in ice water. The shelled pods are a lot easier to use. They still need to be blanched for a few minutes. They're great in salads. I also do a succotash with edamame...

rotation for cyclists.. guru's please help!

Desertbriez, I'm not sure you need to do much off the bike leg work during the spring & summer, drills on the bike should take care of your training needs when your mileage is high. Carmichael's book "The Lance Armstrong Training Program" has a lot of drills with clear descriptions of the...

I would like a strength rotation for my teenage son...

Wantfit Pilates might be appropriate for a 7 year old. Maybe Aquajock could weigh in. Sasha Cohen & Michelle Kwan both do pilates training. It's primarily core work, especially at the beginner level. She could do the basics in under 20 minutes & some of the movements would have a lot of...

If you ARE working one or two body parts a day...

I've been using the gym styles doing 1 or 2 parts per day. If I do 2 parts, I do a push/pull workout. I'm not reducing my cardio. The 1 body part, inspired by Aquajock's faux CTX rotation, leaves me with plenty of time for cardio, yoga & pilates. In one of Cathe's rotations, she...

    Question about running

Timex Ironman watches have a lap counter (mine counts up to 50). You'd go bonkers if you're doing more than 50 laps on a track! You just need to push a button as you complete each lap. Not as cheap as stones/cotton, but much cheaper than a GPS! Debra

    O/T Anyone have an MPA?

Gina, it's my understanding that an MPA prepares one for work in a governmental agency. A MBA program with a curriculum that includes courses relevant to non-profit organizations would be a better choice. But most MBA programs do not do fit your needs. My husband is a professor at the...

    Brenda in Spinervals!!!

I have "Enter the Red Zone with Team Video Fitness". It's fun to see some people you "know" on a video but it's not my favorite Spinerval. Like most Spinervals, it's interval training but Coach Troy doesn't allow the riders to recover after the high intensity work. He actually seems pleased...

    Trail Mix

Trader Joe's has quite a selection & I admit that the one with cashews & cranberries is tasty. But, I usually mix my own. Currently I use dried apples, pineapple & apricots with almonds. I try to stick w/ almonds, peanuts, walnuts or pecans, especially on the trail when you don't want to be...

Vertigo/balance problems need exercise ideas please!

RE: Vertigo/balance problems need exercise ideas please... My favorite yoga instructor has been dealing with the same issues for about 6 months. She's fine when she does her own practice but has a tough time when teaching or just doing routine activities when there's a lot of sensory input...

    Stinky workout clothes

I add baking soda to the wash, with Woolite. I wouldn't use regular detergent on technical fabrics. I also air dry. Still, the shirts need to be destroyed after awhile. Those of you that use warm or hot water, doesn't that shrink your clothes?? Debra

rotation for cyclists.. guru's please help!

I'm not a rotation guru but have been using Cathe's workouts for 5+ years during which I've ridden several centuries, toured (unsupported) from San Francisco to L.A, climbed Mt. Whitney & done a few 1/2 marathons. They're all endurance training, so I might have some ideas. What are your...

    The best Yoga Video

Heather, can you be more specific about what you want from yoga & how much time you want to invest in a yoga practice? Do you have any yoga experience? There are many very good yoga workouts available. Debra

    Levitation - does this count?

My yoga instructor, who does them with her legs extended, assures us that the effort does count. If she demonstrates in the lotus position, she rocks back & forth. I think she's right about getting benefit from the effort, because I can now get one foot off the floor when seated cross-legged...

Does A Person Need All The Weight Training DVDs?

I agree with Allison. S&H is unique & Cathe really focused on postural muscles in that series. The Pyramids are my fall back. She's right about the premixes. I'd whole heartedly give the edge to the Gym Style over Pure Strength, if it weren't for the sound problems. But GS is truly the...
