Swine Flu affecting your area?

I would also recommend avoiding kissing pigs and any and all public restrooms.

Like this?

LIann,

Good advice!!

Upstate New York, no known cases that I know of. I run a daycare out of my home. If schools were shut down I would still take my kids as long as all were healthy.

I live about 45 minutes away from Fort Worth.....and we also have a few local school closings here (some just miles from my home). People are beyond nervous....Purell and face masks are not to be found in any of the local drugstores.

Now, the first Dallas DISD school has just announced a closing based on the first confirmed case there. I imagine in the next few days there will be many more closings. I'm sure parents will be calling into work and those with grown children (like myself) will have to cover for them.

It's just not good here. I understand the school officials are just being cautious, but it's really causing people to panic.

So I would assume then that kissing pigs in public restrooms is frowned upon as well. Someone better call George Michael!

All kidding aside :) , I'm happy when I hear guests on cable news remind viewers that some 30,000 + people die from the regular flu every year. Not that this is an insignificant number, but it puts the current situation into perspective. Hopefully, this strain will come and go like any other.

Anyone read Stephen King's The Stand? When my 13 y/o saw a map of the worldwide outbreaks, she gasped and looked at me, "It's Captain Trips!"

I'm in the Bay Area, too, and we got an email (oh the age of technology - no more notes home from school) from the principal. So far we're okay, but if there is one case, the school closes. My DD is 16, so she does not need a sitter, and I'm lucky in that if she did I could work from home, but I remember the days when I was not so fortunate. The kids are hoping to get through one more month so they don't have to make up the time at the end of the school year.

I did hear that previous vaccines are somewhat affective, but this is a different virus, so there are no vaccines for this particular one.

On the ironic side - my DD16 just started reading "The Stand".

Just remember, too -
"Bad flu epidemics can hit young adults hardest because they provoke their powerful immune systems into overreaction, so to stay healthy spend the next few weeks drunk and sleep-deprived to keep yours suppressed." ;)

Maybe that's when the kissing of the pig happens????:confused::eek::confused::eek::confused:

Serioulsy though I have a question - when they close these schools down, then what? Obviously the purpose I assume is to keep it from passing more. Do they send in a crew (perhaps like Beavs in her "suit") to totally disinfect the entire school? When & what decides when the school can re-open?

Someone mentioned panic - not that I don't feel it's serious but it does seem like panic is setting in for some. I have a faith that keeps panic at bay!

Liann! LMAO!

There are cases in NJ, but not near where I live. But it has effected me b/c I've done press release after press release to tell people we have nothing to tell them.

Well, I don't qualify as a "young adult" but I like the second part of that statement :p

I live in the South Jersey area and we have a few "suspected," but none confirmed. We're headed to NYC tomorrow and my DS said, Isn't that where the swine flu lives???

Loved the pig kissing pic Liann.

Another south of the South Bay, thought one of the high schools closed in San Jose but that's 30 min from me.

Heard some areas are not holding events where large groups of people would be gathering. Just a precaution I guess.

Tami - our news channels were showing adults scrubbing desks and chairs - I did hear they are sanitizing at least some of the schools that are shut down in our area.

We have had many employees just recently in Mexico so the managers will be watching them.

Lori - ITA that it is quite interesting how this virus has "morphed" into affecting humans as it has.

Oh I heard a real groaner yesterday...

Well, everyone said that a black man would be elected president when pigs fly, so here we are, 100 days into Obama's Presidency and guess what - swine flu...
