I miss John Denver!

So sappy, I know, but I was watching a PBS documentary about John Denver, and it made me cry. I grew up with John Denver - had EVERY album as a 8-9 year old child, saw him in concert, and knew every song by heart. Get this...I even wrote him a letter when I was about 8 saying how much I loved him, and if I had to ever get glasses, I'd get the round ones like he wore. I got an autographed 8X10 glossy pic from him which I promptly hung in my room.

I remember how saddened I was when he died over 10 years ago crashing his plane into the waters off California. Tonight, I just remembered how special he was...

Man, I am REALLY pms'ing here:p

Pardon my sappy rant,
Heidi

Heidi,
When I was younger too, I owned all of the John Denver music. When I got older and after he left Annie, I grew away from him. Yes, I am pms'ing too. Although, we have Masterpiece Theatre and Yani Music.

I get saddened many times too when I hear one of his songs. The first concert I ever went to in high school was John Denver.

Sad, but his memory definitely lives on in more than just his music.

Actually, he didn't leave Annie -- she left him. So did his second wife. He was a really hard person to live with. But I also miss him and wonder why the oldies stations NEVER play his music -- he was HUGE in the '70s and now they act like he never existed.

I miss him too.

What a great guy I felt he was. Left us also with wonderful music.

Heidi, his sappy music was the soundtrack of my college days. Nothing can make me feel more nostalgic then John Denver. Ah, those were the days.

I loved his music.

In college I can remember piling into my car and everyone singing along on my WAY COOL AM Radio!!!! I am sooo dating myself here!!!

I loved him in high school and have his first Greatest Hits cd. I STILL cry over the lyrics in so many of his songs (For Baby, Follow Me, Leaving on a Jet Plane etc.) *sniff, sniff*

I loved him when I was in college too! I remember that one of my friends who lived down the hall from me in the dorm just LOVED him. She was absolutely nuts over him!! When he came to Macon, GA, which was just a couple of hours from UGA, we all piled into a car and drove to see him. Fun!

John Denver was pretty cool. Too bad every time I listen to Rocky Mountain High I think of that idiot, Tipper Gore.

Another John Denver fan here. My older sister used to listen to his music all the time. When my family drove from Illinois to Colorado in 1975, we listened to his music the whole way. I still listen to his music quite frequently.

Oh, I loved him too and miss him still. What's the song that went "we didn't know who we were, we didn't know what we did..." Loved that. I grew up listening to him - such joy in his voice.

Story1267, that song was, "On The Road" from the "Back Home Again" CD. I too grew up with John Denver and some of my favorites were, "Sunshine on my Shoulders", "Matthew", and of course, "Grandma's Feather Bed". My sister used to play his music on her guitar, so it really takes me back to my childhood:). Good times!! I also miss Karen Carpenter's voice:( Music has such a way of taking you right back in time.

Actually, when I was a kid I would not be caught dead listening to John Denver. It has only been recently when I realized just how awesome he was, and what a free spirit he was. Suddenly he fit in with my being a huge fan of the Allman Bros view of the world, if that makes any sense.

I was a big fan in 7th-8th grade - what great songs!
I saw him in concert about a year before he died. He was an amazing performer and his voice had gotten better as he got older. Such a loss.

I love John Denver too - I remember him from jr. highschool. My sister was older and adored him. My fiance loved him too - we are the same age. In fact, I'm getting him the "Country Roads Collection" - basically a box set of songs - for his wedding gift.

My favorite song - "Rhyme and Reason"

"So you speak to me of sadness and the coming of the winter. The fear that lives inside you now, it seems to never end. . . . ."

He was only 23 when he wrote that song . . . .

AND - I bet all artists are difficult. Think of some of the greatest - and they often had serious issues. Creative genius can be anti-social, I guess.

Thanks OGP for the song title. Since I read this thread yesterday I've been humming John Denver tunes in my head. I think I have a greatest hits cd of some kind at home in my changer. I'll dig it out and listen this evening when I'm on my way to see DF. He owns that documentary and we watched it a few years ago......
