Getting Our Licks In!

We are having wonderful weather--no humidity and highs in the 70s. Ripken is loving it during our walks. This morning he got a treat from one of our neighbors who sees us walk by every morning. Let's see what did I do for exercise? Ummmm--today was--4DS Kickbox. Gosh, why did I have a hard time remembering that. It was so much fun.

ReneeP: I understand that you feel like you need to peel away. That is fine. Please know that you are always welcome. We will miss you. Be sure that you give your pups an extra hug/kiss from us everyday.

Janie: Don't you hate seeing dead wildlife on the beach. Poor animal probably got caught in a ships propellents and eventually just washed up on the beach. So unfortunate. Sounds like you are continuing to get out and increase your activity, so you must be feeling better everyday. Yes--it looks like it is going to be you and me for a while. I keep hoping that Shadowpup and Laura will float back in but I guess they just have alot going on in their lives at the moment. How would we invite new people to join us?

Michelle

Rolly and I walked the beach where the mammal had died and took a photo of it. I don't know why.:rolleyes: Walked about 30 min.

Renee
, OK then. Looking forward to it.

Michelle, Ooo Love your weather. We have Low 70's and high humidity. I'll take it. LOL Lucky Ripken. I bet he makes friends everywhere he goes. Great job on 4DS Kickbox. It is a good workout, I like it too. I thought maybe we could invite some people over from Open Discussion. What do you think?

Take care,

Janie

Another walk with Rolly on the beach for about 40 min. There was fog and a few times it broke away and looked like clouds/ghosts(lol) going by. One of them hit me, or went right through me. So Cool! It was an amazing day. Warm and humid, and even my hair got damp with droplets of water. Wow, who knew this kind of weather on the beach. Love it!

Another fall-like day. Very un-August-like in the Mid-Atlantic this year. But the heat and humidity will be back. Yesterday, I never got around to exercising. Just too busy. Was supposed to do Slide and glide but I just let it slide instead. I toyed with doing S&G and muscle endurance today, but I just went with Muscle Endurance since I've got lots of cardio coming up this week. 3rd week of the August rotation is Max week, starting with Low Max tomorrow.

Janie: well, you haven't mentioned your cold, so is it gone? Squash soup with chicken sounds delicious. I love squash but my DH is not crazy about it, so we don't usually have it. One person can only eat so much squash and I'm not much of a cook so....When do you think you will start exercising again? BTW, you haven't mentioned anything about making soap of late--have you taken a sabattical from soap making? Just wondering.

`michelle

At the tail end of this horrific cold and decided today will be the day to start exercising again. I did Yoga Max prem. 1, 32 min. and Rolly and I walked fast on the beach for 45 min. It was sooooooooo goooooood! I did a total of 77 min on workouts and burned 256 calories. No a bad start.

Having spaghetti squash spaghetti with broccoli in it for dinner tonight (one serving) along with my fizzed tea water kefir. And later will have a protein green smoothy. Yummmmmm. Very healthy! Oh, for breakfast had a banana. I know, that's not much. Really didn't feel like anything else. For lunch I had organic chicken sausage with good ingredients inside. I know, I love this stuff. ONly two of them with yet another banana. Banana's are getting ripe. Need to think about using them in a healthy way. Ideas?

Michelle, Hmmmm weather seems to be changing all around. We have high humidity at the ocean and warm days around 70 or so.

Great job on Muscle Endurance today. I'm going to modify the 3rd and 4th week in Aug. rotation and will be doing Low Max tomorrow as well.

Glad you mentioned soap. Will be making some very soon. Most likely in September after our company leaves. Will be making the cancer free soap for my Joey's skin. It's good for mine too and gets rid of the skin tags that come up when I don't use it. I know it works for that for sure.LOL

Take care,

Janie

Had a really nice walk with Ripken this morning. Still on the cooler side here in the mornings, but that is going to change--the summer heat and humidity are due to come back for a few days. But, it is August, so living in Virginia, you can only expect so many days of no humidity and 60-70 degree weather. Did KickMax this morning, less the blasts at the end. Officially started my Christmas shopping this weekend. I'm trying to get my "tough to buy for" people done first.

Janie: my DH is a big banana eater. He has to watch his potassium (that it does not get too low). He has at least one a day, sometimes 2. I eat them when he puts them in my lunch. Today my fruit is peaches. Your meals sound so healthy. I must admit that I am not that diligent. Are you just trying to be careful about your diet or are you trying to lose weight? Maybe a little of both?

~michelle

Did LowMax prem. 1-4 also modified a whole lot by only using a rug for the step up. met value of 3.0. I burned 166 calories. Walked on the beach with Rolly at 2.5 mph for 50 min. and burned 185 calories. Total calories burned 351. Total time of exercises was 95 min. Had spaghetti squash made into a couple of spaghetti meals and had a fizzy water kefir. Not trying to lose weight but trying to eat better with the right amount of servings. It helps very much with GERD. If I lose weight it's only a bonus.

Very windy/sunny at the beach today and during the time of walking, there wasn't a soul around until I got back to the road. Magnificent!

Michelle, Great job on the walk with Ripken. Enjoy your cooler days while they are here. Great job on Kickmax this morning less the blasts. Wow! Christmas shopping sounds so early, yet you are so smart doing it this way. Good for you!

Thinking banana's are good for leg cramps, I also have at least one or two during the day.

Thinking of making banana bread with half of organic sugar, a couple more eggs and half nut flour and half bread flour, with a little protein powder. Should be good with breakfast with a banana. LOL Don't want to waste them, Joey always seems to buy to many of them.

Take care and give Ripken a big hug for me,

Janie

New Members

For those of you thinking about joining our little group. Please do. We need more people as I said, but also as a group, there is encouragement and a chance to make friends.

Janie

I'll Join!

Hi! My name is Kathy & I'd love to join your group. I used to be on Cathe's forums quite a bit years ago. I'm one of the old timers on here.

Some background on myself:

I've been working out for close to 30 years. Started out with Living Well Lady! OhMy! Then had a personal trainer who introduced me to Cathe & the rest is history. I'm married for 30 years to my wonderful DH & my son is 21 yo in college. I live in a nautical town called Oceanside in NY.

When I workout I mostly do splits for weight training usually to Cathe but have tried others KCM & Frank Sepe in Met-RX 180 which I really liked. I also do high impact each week 1-2x & try to get in yoga or a longer stretch. That's usually my rotation. I met Cathe in 2005 when she had her 1st roadtrip that contained 102 people.

Unfortunately I had strained my left bursa sac & put me out from any weight training. Its been 3 weeks so far. Got over that but now my muscle is inflammed. How I did this I have no idea. Taking my anti-inflammatories & just now starting to feel like my old self. I'm getting old. I'll be 60 in Oct. Getting old STINKS!

Usually my meals are pretty clean for the most part during the week, however, come Saturday not so good. :( Trying hard to knock off the extra weight I gained + the inches I gained all over. Clothes fit me tight where before they didn't. I have some guidance on how to do better come the weekend.

Look forward to talking to you ladies!

Take care.

Me too :)

I'd love to join also, I need some extra motivation to get back into a good routine.

My name is Cindy and I'm 34. I'm married to my DH Dave (11 years now) and we have 3 kids Brodie (7), Lily (5), and Lucas (10 months). I've always struggled with my weight and after having my daughter I made a huge lifestyle change to eat healthy, exercise regularly (this is when I discovered Cathe via her STEP workouts) and it paid off. I looked and felt great. We also went gluten free around that time. During my pregnancy with my youngest I didn't gain too much weight (10 pounds extra from my pre-preg) but the medication I took to help my body produce milk caused me to gain weight and I added on 20 pounds after he was born. :( He is now in a good routine with getting to bed at a decent time so I'm working on getting myself back into exercising though I'm still limited right now with time.

To get me on track I've started the 5/2 diet (5 days 1300-1400 calorie and 2 days fasting) which has worked out well so far. I'm also following Bob Harper's new Skinny Rules workouts (20-25 min so they're short and just what I need right now) aiming to get them done in the morning but doing them at night as needed. I work full time so it's either workout at 5am or at 8:30pm.

That's me in a nutshell and thanks for much for opening up your thread :)

Cindy

First, thanks to my wonderful friend Janie for inviting new members and welcome to Kathy and Cindy. This check-in was born several years ago (about 4 I think) through Janie and her Lurkers Invitation Thread. The name for our thread was inspired by our love for our precious pups and my golden retriever Ripken's daily ritual of "getting his licks in" by licking me down after I finished exercising. I never minded it because I was jumping in the shower anyway. I am 50, soon to be 51, live in Virginia, and I have exercised since I was a teenager. I found Cathe via Fit-TV about 5 years ago and checked out her website for beginner dvds because I couldn't keep up with her on FitTV. I have done 3 Cathe Glassboro Roadtrips (2010, 2011, and 2012), but took a break this year. I've been married to my DH, Joe, for 21 years, no children, one extremely handsome and precious golden retriever, Ripken.

Exercise this morning was muscle max. Tuesday is usually my rest/stretch day, but my regular Tuesday morning meeting at Quantico got shifted to Wednesday and I have another meeting before that at 0800, so Wednesday's workout flipped to today. My body will be happy for the rest tomorrow--that is for sure.

Janie: You can probably modify all the workouts a bit on the August rotation to facilitate slowing getting back into the exercise routine. I could probably use a banana today but my DH packed strawberries in my lunchbag. You haven't mentioned the GERD of late--so I've been hopeful that you have not had any issues.

Kathy: you will find much sympathy/empathy here for getting older. At this point, I figure it beats the alternative. Can you do yoga/stretching while your back is on the mend? I have to look up Oceanside, NY to see where you are--is that on Long Island?

Cindy: it is good to have someone a little younger to keep us inspired and hopefully we can do the same for you. You must certainly be busy with 3 children plus a full-time job. I don't have children but commute to NoVa for work so I know what it is like to find the time to exercise. I do mine usually around 6:30 in the morning, then I drive in later and come home later. Short workouts are better than no workouts at all. It's great that you have figured out a good strategy that works with your daily schedule. I think that is most of the battle for many people.

Okay--enough of a break--back to work. So happy to have new friends.:)

I'll Join!

Hi Michelle & Cindy!

Cindy: I don't know how you do it w/3 children & a full time job too. Wow my hats off to you for working out. Your amazing. When my son was little I used to belong to a gym but now workout in my basement.

Michelle: Oceanside is in Long Island. The inflammation is in my left arm right above the elbow. I'm still working out but mostly cardio. Tried doing KCM's Plateau Buster w/out #2 & only used one db in my right hand. That felt weird. LOL But I'm such a die-hard I just can't stop exercising. Tonight I'll be doing Cathe's Intensity Step only premix.

I work full time too in the city. Leave the house at 7:00 and don't get back home until 6:30. It takes 1 1/2 hrs. to commute to the city from Oceanside. I make dinner for DH & DS & workout in the basement anywhere from 7-7:15 p.m.

Talk to you ladies tomorrow. Have a good night! Kathy

Before lunch I did Muscle Max. It was 73 min. long and I believe a met value of 5 so I think I burned 449 calories. Darn! It was suppose to be Kick Max according to the Aug. rotation. Oh well, will do Kick Max tomorrow. Also Rolly and I walked on the beach for 30 min. at 2.5 mph, I figured the met value was 3 and burned 111 calories. Total calories burned today was 560 calories. Yes! Eating very well so far and loving it. No injuries or colds and feel really good and strong.

To the new members: Welcome aboard! I'm so pleased to meet you two. Thank you for the small description of yourselves. It helps to get an idea of what you are like.

As for myself, been with Cathy for many many years. Was 2nd handing one day and found a DVD of hers and tried it out. I was hooked ever since. It was Maximum Intensity cardio and weight lifting. I now own all of her DVD's.

My husband and I have been married for 22 years and we have a dog named Rolly and a cat named Higgen. We own two houses, one in the forest in the Pacific NW in Shelton WA for 6 months and one near the ocean near Westport WA, for 6 months. And only two hrs away from each other.

Kathy, I'm also one of the old timers. What name did you go by? Maybe I will remember you. I looked up Oceanside and realized you were hit very hard by Sandy. That was only last year. How are you doing now? Isn't Oceanside known for thier oysters? Love oysters by the way. How fun to be able to go on the first road trip of Cathe's. Was in a somewhat simular situation as yourself in the way of not being able to workout. I had Tennis Elbow and it took almost a year to heal. So frustrating. Hang in there, your inflammation will heal and you will be back at it soon. I'm 62, so I know what you mean when you say you are getting old. But, we have an advantage and we work out. I see many ladies my age or even a little younger and they look not so fit. We are lucky to keep ourselves healthy the best we can. Don't worry, you will get back to yourself in no time at all. Especially now that you are feeling more yourself.

Cindy, I have to be very careful with my weight as well. Thank goodness for Cathe! I too made a commitment to stay healthy and fit. I mostly go gluten free because I have GERD, so diet is very important to me. Leaving out grains helped me more than I realized. You are doing great after having a baby and with a good routine you will be in tip top shape in no time. Like Michelle said even doing a short workout is better than nothing when you don't have a lot of time. For me doing one day of fasting every now and then works for me, but I don't think I can fast 2 day in a week. It must be an age thing. LOL I get too hungry! lol

Michelle, Has it been that long on our thread? Time does fly by. Great job on MM, I did that one myself today. Whew! You are so right about modifying the Aug rotation to fit me. It's working! As long as I stay pretty close to the Paleo diet, I have no complaints. It works that well for me.

Take care ladies, Welcome again Kathy and Cindy for coming on board.

Janie

Hi, I been with Cathe for 2 years and I love her dvds, I did lose all my pregnancy weigth with her, but I still need to lose like 5lbs and get better toning, Im will be 40 next month with 4 kids.I no décide wich rotation to start.

I just wanted to add a few more details of myself to the new members. Joey (my hubby) and I have between us 4 grandsons. I have a daughter from my first marriage, and Joey (my 3rd and last marriage) has 4 children from his wife who had lost her battle with breast cancer. Never have I been so fulfilled in my life. Joey and his children and my daughter, has changed me forever and for the better.

Mariposa
, Welcome aboard! I'm so glad we have peaked your interest in joining our group. It's going to be fun to hear about your four children. As you already know, Cathy has a monthly rotation and I'm going to start using her rotations for my journey to move forward for better health and fitness. She gave me a personal rotation and I had lost (if I remember right) about 45-48 pounds and became stronger than I have ever been before. Like I said above having an injury and trying to heal for almost a year was horrible and was doubting if I could ever get back to where I was. Well, I made it through and I'm fine now and rearing to get back what I lost. Much wiser now and truly respect the weight being used.

40 is a wonderful age to be. You have learned lessons yet you are still young and strong.

Thank you for joining us, I think we can all learn from one another.

Janie

Hi There!

Good Morning Ladies!

Hello Janie. I remember your injury but didn't realize that it took you a year to heal. I'm so glad to hear that your back at it again. I had been following your progress when you were doing Cathe's personal rotation. I had even cut & pasted it for myself. Your 2 homes must be beautiful!! Especially for 6 months in a forest setting & other one on the beach. How lovely! I don't remember what your occupation was. I'd like to know how you managed to have 2 homes though. LOL (just kidding) In NY that's virtually impossible.

My town of Oceanside was hit very hard. One half of my town was wiped out. However, in almost a year quite a bit of the places of business & homes have come back. But not w/headaches along the way. Luckily for my house I only suffered minor damage due to the fact that I live in higher ground & not near any water.

Last night I did Cathe's Intensity the step only premix. I forgot all about the blasts at the end of all the step combos. :O It was so muggy last night in my basement I just couldn't make that last combo & blast. I was a sweaty mess at the end. Tonight I'll be doing Butts & Guts the Leg Blast premix. At least I can work my legs even though I can't hold onto any heavy weights yet. I'm a little scared once I'm healed to start lifting weights again. I know that I can inflame my bursa sac all over again so I'll have to be careful. Maybe just do light weights to start off with. First I need to heal.

Welcome Mariposa! Looking forward to speaking more w/you.

Off to work now but I'll be back later to talk more.

have a great day ladies & as Cathe says "work work!" LOL

I got in my Strength workout last night (I pour sweat with those 20 min) and woke up refreshed this morning after a great night of sleep so I popped out of bed and got in my Core workout. My legs are feeling tired from it all :) If all goes well with getting the kids down tonight I'm going to aim for the 20 min rotation of Athletic Training.

I forgot to tell you all where I'm located, I live in Bozeman, MT and work at the University so right now we're rushing to get things ready for the first day of classes on Monday and with all the students coming back it's a mad house around here. That's how I know summer is officially over :(

Michelle - That's pretty sweet he licks you clean :) Going to the road trips would be so much fun and scary! I really enjoyed being able to stream the road trip this year.

Kathy - 1.5 hours is a long commute, I don't know how you do it. I get annoyed with my 20-25 min drive! I work out at home also and am happy with the DVD's I have. There are times I think a gym would be nice then reality of working it around my schedule and motivating myself to get out the door when I have someone to watch the kids just isn't easy.

Janie - Great calorie burn for the day! You live in a gorgeous area. I found that I had to get my mental block changed so I would be OK with only getting in 20 min of exercise at a time, for awhile my thinking was that if it was under 40 min what was the point.

Mariposa - I need to check out Cathe's rotations and see what I can modify to work for me based on the DVD's I have and the time I have. I always think I need to get more workouts when I see the rotations :)

Cindy

Wow--we are a big group all of a sudden. This is great. We span the U.S., east coast to west. I like that we are geographically and demographically diverse. But bear with me if I confuse who you are with where you are for a while. The lovely heat and humidity of August have returned to the mid-Atlantic, but Ripken and I were up extra early this morning so it was not bad for him at all. This evening will probably be a different story. After 7 straight days of workouts, today is my rest day. Thank-goodness.

Janie: I think I may have copied, pasted and saved in a WORD file the workout rotation that Cathe did for you. If so, I have it saved on my home computer. I will check and repost it here for you. Muscle Max gave me major glute DOMs yesterday/today--how about you?

Cindy: Bozeman, MT is supposed to be beautiful, no wonder why your Cathe call-sign is Lifeisgood. Ah, the academic life. I think I've spent half my life going to school but somewhere along the way I decided that academia was not where I wanted to be working after I finished my degrees. I did always love going back to school, though--it was exciting. There is something about the fresh-start feeling of a new school year.

Kathy: somehow I missed the one and a half hour commute. Ick. Makes my commute look pretty good (~45 minutes one way). I also looked up Oceanside on the internet and realized that you must have been hit hard by Sandy. I'm glad to hear that the community has recovered considerably. That was such a horrible event. I think Cathe's Intensity workout is one of her hardest ones. Just getting through the step part is a huge accomplishment.

Mariposa: welcome to our group. Only needing to lose 5 pounds is not a bad thing. Are you doing the August rotation or one of Cathe's others?

~michelle

This morning was 20 min. of Kickmax. I used the time saver prem. at met 5 and burned 123 calories. Tonight I walked the beach with Rolly for 30 min. at met 3 at 2.5 mph and burned 111 calories. Total calories burned 234. A far cry from yesterday but needed not to be so harsh today. My body was tired. Ate very well today.

Kathy
, Really? You've been fallowing my progress? I still have my dream goal someday, you never know. My husband and I are retired. It's sooooo nice. You truly were blessed and lucky suffering minor damage from
Sandy. Wow. Great job on Intensity the step only prem. Good job even for the mugginess you had to go through. When you start lifting weights again, make sure you are ready/healed, then go nice and easy. You'll get there.

Cindy, Great job on Strength workout last night. Sweat is good. And for your core workout this morning. Can't hardly believe it's school time again. Time went really fast this Summer break. Are you a teacher/professor? I bet you get a lot of snow in the Winter. Brrrrrrrrrr. Yep a lot of people think like you (I use to too) that under 40 min. what's the use to do the workout. But as we live and learn it's still very good to break up workouts.

Michelle, Aw no, sorry to hear about the humidity. At least it's no surprise. Great job walking with Ripken this morning and for your rest day. You well deserve one after those 7 days of workouts. I have the rotation Cathe for me, no need to copy and paste it unless others might be interested. After I get stronger I'll be doing it again. ;) Yep I do feel some DOM's. Yea!

Take care ladies,

Janie
