RE: what does everyone
Wow -- this thread has gotten very long since I last checked! I hope you see my response, Roxie.
I live in Anchorage and the winters here are milder than Michigan's upper peninsula where I grew up -- less snow and it's a drier cold here. The further north you go in the state, the colder it is (the state of Texas can fit into Alaska about four times, just to give you some perspective). The winters here don't really bother me.
Also, our part of the state doesn't get 24-hours of darkness like the more northern parts. On the shortest day, the sun comes up about 10 a.m. and sets at 3 p.m. But on the flip side, in the summer, the sun is up till 2 a.m. or so and then back by 5 a.m., and I LOVE that! Yes, I use room darkening shades to sleep
It's funny because when I go to the Lower 48 now, it's odd to me if it's dark by 9:30 in July ;-)
Temps in January can be in the teens (and we do get the occassional below zero cold snap) and in the summer, we are generally in the mid-to high-60s. This last week or so, it's been in the low-70s. We even hit 80s every once in awhile, and that's pretty warm for us!
Okay, I'll quit rambling! Alaska is an incredible place, and if you have get the opportunity, I highly recommend a visit!
