Need help with Vaccum Cleaners and Dogs..

Can someone advise regarding vaccum cleaners and dog hair? We have a 6 month old Chocolate Lab who has been shedding lately and our vaccum is just not having much fun with the hair. Any good vaccums out there that are reasonably priced? I want to get a Furminator for him, but I think he is too young, so my vaccum is really my go to on this issue...

Any help is greatly appreciated,

Sherman's Mom:rolleyes:

Ugh! Why did I have to open this thread? Now I want to buy that Dyson!!!! I can't I can't I can't!!!! My Simplicity works pretty well, so I just have to remind myself of that. Wants and needs. Wants and needs...

OK - that totally looks like the vacuum cleaner my DS won when he went to BB&Beyond one day and signed up for a raffle ! He said it was about a $500 vacuum cleaner.

Now I'm thinking about it cuz whenever I vacuum and then clean my rugs I still pick up loads of dog hair with the carpet cleaner !

I have a Dyson and it works wonders with animal hair - I have a Boxer and a Maine Coon cat.

In fact, when I first got it I was embarassed at how much hair it picked up, especially because I vacuum every day!!!

I have 4 labs - 3 chocolate & 1 yellow. The yellow by far sheds worse than the chocolates!!

Can't help you on the vacuum part of it but I do have "THE FURMINATOR" & love it!!! Why do you think he is to young? If I stay at it with that I see a huge difference in the hair! Well worth the money - when it's used

oh no! now I'm gonna have to look at a Dyson too! We have an Aussie/border collie mix, so she has LONG hair and LOTS of it! and now with the weather getting warmer she is starting to shed so I am constantly vacuuming fur-bunnies... we just have a simple canister vac from Sears (Progressive with the electric furniture attachment so it doesn't rely on air to turn the brush) but change the bags often. We have had several of the bagless ones over the years, but I hated emptying them because I got more dust from the cloud that poofed up! I'm sure that ours doesn't work as well, but it does the trick for now, and was only around $250. HOWEVER, with the longer hair, it kept getting wrapped around the beater-bar and eventually into the bearings on each side of it. Once it froze up and DH had to break it free so we could use it until the replacement bar came! nothing like the smell of burnt dog hair

guess I'm not much help and know that the shorter hair is almost harder to pick up than the longer ones! if you find anything be sure to let us know what you end up with! :)

I have 5 Mini Australian Shepherd - yup, they are all in the house  but I have less dog hair than one would expect. What has really helped with their shedding was a supplement called Dream Coat by Halo.

I only have carpet in the bedrooms and I really like my vacuum cleaner, it's a Miele Silver Moon canister vacuum with a power brush but it is pretty expensive. I had 2 Kenmore canister vacuums before they were both good in the beginning but didn't last very long.

The Dyson looks pretty interesting! No, I am not spending money on a new vacuum, you enablers :p

Golden retriever owner here, previously had a yellow lab. I vacuum at least 3 times a week, sometimes more. It just comes with having a lab or a golden. I have a dyson animal and it is great! I also have a furminator for my pup. He loves the furminator or any other grooming device for that matter. Retrievers just shed alot and pretty much all year round. Vacuuming is part of the labor of puppy love....

Thanks everyone for your help.

I am afraid the Dyson might be a bit out of my price range right now, but I am keeping it in mind.

Maynardsmom - I had read where the furminator might be too harsh for a puppy's skin, but now I think this is worth a shot. I just bid on one on ebay and will let you know. Sherman isn't a crazy shedder, but just enough to where I am noticing it. My next door neighbor has a yellow lab that just covers you in hair if you go near it!

Thanks again!!:D

Dyson Animal.
It's not cheap, but completely worth the money! The only problem I have is that it works so well, I have to empty the container every room.

This is an incredible deal. I've never ordered from this company, but this is half the normal price.

I second the Dyson. It is an awesome vacuum. I've owned mine for abput 1 1/2 years now. It was worth every bit of the money I spent on it. That is a cheap price for a refurbished vacuum.

I have all wood or tile floors and just sweep and mop a lot, but I clicked on the thread because I thought your problem was a dog who didn't like the vacuum. My puppy chases the broom and mop around and tries to nip at them. I vacuumed my rugs today as well (might need a better vacuum for those, come to think of it) and that really freaked him out.

He's pretty funny when you turn on the blender, too.

I agree with the Dyson Animal. It is the BEST vacuum cleaner I have ever had. I love it! However, it is very expensive but worth every penny. I have a lab too, and sorry to tell you, but the shedding is not going to stop. :( You can literally watch the hair falling off of my dog as you pet him. I love him anyway. Get the Dyson if you can. ;)

Thanks, I have something to shoot for now for my next appliance purchase.

Actually Sherman is really good with noise and such, so thankfully that is not a problem.

I did win that Furminator on Ebay, so that is my next step in this battle. Like I said, his shedding is really pretty minor compared to alot of dogs, so we shall see what happens..

When I first got my dog (a double coated Eskimo) his fur killed the vacuum I had at the time. I got a $99 Hoover vac with a filter instead of bags and it has been cleaning up his fur for over 10 years.

For those of you who have a filter/bagless vacuum...how often does the filter need changing and doesn't it clog with dust? I just got a small Dirt Devil Power Stick to use in my kitchen after dinner and the filter is full of dust already. I don't want to spend $500 on a vacuum to have it be a pain to empty.

I have two labs a chocolate and a yellow and dog hair. i do love my vacuum it works great for dog hair. Kenmore Progressive Upright with Intelliclean.

FYI, the Kenmore Progressive has gotten high marks from Consumer Reports for the last two or three years. I have never owned or used one so I cannot personally speak to their performance, but apparently a lot of people are quite happy with them.

I have had an Oreck for a number of years and I absolutely love it. The Oreck Ultra has a hepa filter and is completely odorless. It is lightweight and easy to manipulate. I have two chocolate labs (for a while I had three), and it does a great job for me. The Ultra costs about $500 or $600, but if you open an Oreck account to purchase one you can take 12 months interest free to pay it off.

In the past, I have had one bagless vacuum cleaner and would never have another one. The gag factor when emptying it was just too much.

Just another thought - my vacuum does ok on the floors, but I have a problem with furniture. I use Sticky Sheets - huge clear sheets of plastic with a sticky side - kind of like a huge piece of tape . . . you can put them over a chair, tuck them into the corners and then "rip" them off - and off comes the hair. Really good for quick fix when company is coming over.
