My turn for a home fitness vent!!!

OK...a little background here...

Before I discovered the joys of in-home fitness, I belonged to a health club that was co-owned by a local couple. Said couple has now broken up, and they each own a health club basically accross the street from one another.

Fast forward to the morning..I'm in my local department store, when I run into the male gym owner where I used to go, and he actually compliments me, tells me my posture has improved, I'm no longer favoring my back, so he asks me how I like Debbie's place...(Debbie, of course, being the female half and the owner of the gym accross the street). I tell him I wouldn't know, I've never been, I work out at home with Cathe Friedrich. He doesn't reply one way or the other as to whether or not he's heard of Cathe, but it's quickly apparent what his view on home fitness is when he replies that I'm giving him a load of BS because home fitness doesn't work, and I'm just being nice about the fact that I've jumped ship, or, in this case, gym, on him.

I'm through arguing with people on this subject, this is the second time in a year I've had someone I've known for a while compliment me, only to give me grief that either home fitness doesn't work, or that I'm just being nice about joining the enemies' gym.

I told him, he's right...there's this new place in Rio Grande that just opened called CF's Sweat Palace, and they're only accepting private members, and everything is being kept quiet until the grand opening sometime in the future.....!!!

Seriously? What a funny conversation!!! Invite him over for a workout and humble the guy!

That's right, people. All the strength gains you've made, all the pounds and inches you've lost...that's all a figment of your imaginations.

:p

Oh Jerry! GREAT response...CF sweat palace...smile.

Yeah! I originally lost 107 pounds...forced to the gym...I didn't like it gained 50...now I'm working on getting back off and I think I'm in the best shape I've ever been in concidering I have some poundage still to lose.

God forbid your not spending every dollar you have to work out at the gym. My Gym at home has more than paid for itself and I'm sure yours has to!

Keep up the GREAT work Jerry! Your body will love you for it...

Wow, that's a good story. what's wrong with these people!! it's amazing that he thought you were making this up.

I have a friend that owns a gym and she hadn't heard of Cathe before. I think gym folks don't really look beyond their gym world. Alot think you need machines and personal trainers to make a difference, but as we know - that's not true!

Deana,

The best example of what you just described is at Cathe's own gym...the first time I took a class with her, a few people asked me how I heard of her...I said from her videos...the responses of..."she has videos out"? astounded me!

Great story!

I think that when a lot of people hear the term *home fitness* they think *infomercial* and *scam.* So many infomercials(and I don't just mean fitness related) make such outrageous claims that everyone knows they can't be true so people are skeptical of anything they perceive as coming from that market.

I realize that Cathe's videos aren't an infomercial product but I think to the common person any home fitness person/product is synonomous with television advertising and is therefore suspect.

I can totally relate, Jerry. A few weeks ago my DH dropped me off at Ikea while he went to see about joining a gym nearby. I don't really want to join a gym but was willing to join if it meant DH would get into fitness. Anyway, somehow I got bored at Ikea (that's never happened before) so I walked over to the gym. The gym salesman was shocked that I had walked 'so far'. It was probably less than 1/2 mile. He also seemed surprised that I looked so fit. Afterwards my DH told me that when he told the guy that I had a workout room at home he said "Why does she workout at home? Does she need to lose a lot of weight?" As if the only reason to work out at home is shame!
We didn't join. It was too expensive. DH in riding his bike in the evening now.

No way! excuse me while I pick my jaw up!

i am one of those ppl that will actually tell somebody " don't make me slap you upside yo head" when they throw those comments at me. i would invite him over for a cathefest workout. maybe something in the KPC, terminator, drill max or hardcore extreme territory. see if he bows to the porcelain gods by combo 3 BWAHAHAHAHAHAHA:eek:

If you do not get the "home fitness doesn't work thing" you get the "it's only a matter of time thing" where they think you will just stop working out eventually because how could you possibly keep a home workout interesting.

Great answer, Jerry. I think there are alot health club owners in denial with the home fitness industry. A guy that I was in communication with was a previous PT so he was kinda timid about it until I told him what I was doing and what I had accomplished. Ask this guy if he knows about P90X.

Very interesting Jerry.

I think many of us are in the same boat as far as receiving compliments and people not understanding how working out at home could be beneficial.

Though I must say, it does take a good deal of discipline just as it would to work at home.

That being said, many can't believe it because they wouldn't have the willpower to do what they need to do.

In fact, that is why I sometimes come here when I am not motivated. If I get into my workout clothes then checkin at the forums - voila ! the motivation gets me going.

I've done this many times myself, Jacque

Well, I used to be one of those who mocked home fitness--I thought it was all like Denise Austin (no offense to her fans) or something.

I feel so blessed to have discovered Cathe and the handful of other advanced fitness instructors that I enjoy.

I think you should have him do the bonus premix on BC/ME plus the blasts from Kick Max plus BC cardio only premix if he's still giving you lip.

Maggie:)
