work out room

Hi everyone. I'm coming out of lurking to ask the experts a question. I've been doing Cathe's for a while, but never post. I used to post a long time ago until they switched servers or something and I've never reregistered. Anyway, we built out home about a year ago, but never finished the basement. I haven't got to do my home workouts for a year. We're getting ready to finish the basement and I finally get to have a workout room. I'm so excited. The room will be about 19 feet by 16 feet. I'm looking for imput such as flooring, wall color ect. Any other useful advice that you have. I know there are several of you with workout rooms and I'm sure I'll get great suggestions. Thanks in advance.

I really think the most important part is the floor. I won't be much help because I just have carpet over the concrete. It really does add to the wear and tear on you knees. I have seen some great wo areas so hope you get great advice. Joan

I have a room that is 10x20, close to the size of your room. I put a really good floor in 1 1/2 year ago and it was the best thing I ever did. I put in a Springstep II floor from stagestep.com. It was quite easy and I did most of it myself (DH picked out the plywood since he is really picky about that, but I did the rest). That is just the subfloor, I had to put flooring on top of that. I am very happy with the result. The rest of the room just took care of itself with all of the equipment I had.

Have fun, it is awesome to create your dream workout room.

I am always glad to share my workout space. I love it. It's the best thing I have done for myself. My flooring is important. I am 53 and my knees need all the help they can get. I have a athletic mat for shock absorption. It's over carpet on concrete. It really makes jumping easier on the knees. The spring floors are really nice!

Wow Jann, you're workout space is fantastic! Lucky girl! My love my workout space, but wish it could be bigger (someday i hope!)

StayHome4- You should also paint the room a soothing color. I went to a gym at one point that made a decision to piant the walls bright yellow (because yellow is supposed to make people feel energetic) TERRIBLE CHOICE! The place gave me a headache and didn't feel very inviting at all!

Our workout room is in the basement. we first put down industrial carpeting plus pad over concrete. It was OK for a while but eventually started to smell musty. carpet holds moisture/sweat. I wasn't sure I could shampoo it and have it ever dry out. I'd recommend against carpet on concrete. Ours is a daylight basement, absolutely no leaks but still got smelly.
we tore it out and put down wood-look laminate. very common now, the kind in strips like hardwood. we like this much better. easy to vacuum or damp mop and never smells funny. has held up well. we have industrial type black mats under treadmill and elliptical. I use some unattached carpet strips to keep barbells and dumbbells from rolling or denting the floor. Our only mistake was not makign the room big enough.

Jann, your room is gorgeous!

Make sure you get a good gym floor. I am w/o on cement and it's not good on the feet and knee's. DH is busy building his workshop now so no time for my floor YET. I want to get something decent, but so far working on rubber matt from walmart for floor work and push ups and such. It works good for now.

Wow, nice!!!!!! I'm jealous.

If you are building a workout room from scratch, I'd want to make sure to keep all equipment handy but have the room look uncluttered and serene-a challenge-yes! Sturdy shelves or racks for weights and dvds, pegs for bands and other hangable equipment. Cloth curtains hike clutter but don't interfere with access and don't cost much. Also, lots of mirrors-I get a motley but pretty assortment at yard sales and thrift stores and just cover the walls with them. An important rule for me-THAT ROOM IS ONLY FOR WORKING OUT-NOTHING ELSE GETS TO GO IN THERE, EVEN TEMPORARILY!!

My Workout Room!

I'm pretty proud of my workout room, so I decided to post a picture. It's almost clutter-free! My dad is making me a weight rack. We put a counter top along the left wall to set my TV & DVD player on with cabinets underneath. Inside is where I keep all my DVDs and extra stuff. The right wall serves as a food pantry. My husband is very good at building out what he envisions in his head; I just had to trust him. I workout on carpet with padding underneath, but would fight harder for different flooring if doing the room again.

I'm so jealous of everyone who has a dedicated room for their workouts! I use my living room and I have to push the couch out of the way, move all my weights, step, chair, ball, mat, etc. in the room, THEN I can start my workout. Afterwards, I have to move all my stuff back out and fix the room! It's another workout! LOL!

Someday . . .

Ah hell! Now I'm having workout room envy!

Thanks! :)

I got my flooring from Tiffin Athletic mats. I live in Maryland so I went to their warehouse. They don't have a showroom just a warehouse. The people there were super nice. They have spring floor kits. I've been putting this space together for 7 years piece by piece. Birthday, Christmas, Mothers day :D
I would love to have a spring floor, for now though this mat is working for me.

I wanted to add. There are a lot of other places to get spring flooring that may be better. I know a lot of gals here have put them in.
I purchased my mat from here because I could go jump on the different styles and actually feel what it would be like. hth's :)
