STS first time!

Wow, lots of activity here! I'm trying to keep up with reading all the posts, but they keep growing!

Last night I had some energy when I got home so I did AB, or I should say I tried to do AB. I did something to tweak my knee during the workout, and it was really bothering me during the runners' lunge so had to stop. The pain came from my kneecap when I bent my leg. It feels fine today but I think I'll do an upper body workout later to be on the safe side.

Jean, great job on legs! I agree, sometimes the first set is harder, maybe the muscles need more time to warm up. And I find low plane lunges harder, but I usually use a heavier weight for those than paper plate lunges. I hope your dog is ok!

Si, so interesting to read your blog and get your input on nutrition. That's an area I am lacking in. If you do an early morning workout, what do you eat beforehand?

Meredith, I do not have the STS Tower either and started out with the bands, until mine snapped - ouch! I ended up moving my workout outside and using the bar that hangs from my kids' swingset. It was more like a modified pullup but it worked much better than the bands.

Marie, I worked out while pregnant long ago, but nothing like Cathe workouts. These are tough! I think your body will snap back quickly after you have the baby, especially with breastfeeding.

Colleen you do need to get some sneakers for TTM. I wear sneakers normally and I did the new workouts on consecutive days, and my knees were a little twingy.

Ok I can't catch up with everything but I am at work. Have a great day!

Oh man, I'm nervous about doing TTM tomorrow now...:(. I might just have to do the less impact premix, but like you said Carolyn, it's pretty short. Drat! I wish I had brought it to work with me so I could preview it on my computer. Maybe I could have been more prepared with low impact modifications that way. Not sure what I'm going to do now....

Horizontal Conditioning Volume 4 today. Oh my gawd! Talk about balance challenges on the ball! This one move is insane. Plus it's right at the end when I'm totally fatigued and I just can't do it quite yet. She has your feet/shins up on the ball, hands on a 6 inch step in plank, then she has you do what she calls suicide push ups (Jillian calls them walking planks) where you go down on one elbow at a time then push back up to your hands. I love that move but on the ball??? I just couldn't do it so I wound up kicking the ball aside, put my feet on the step and did it with my hands on the floor. Lots to work up to there! Missy- you may want to work on the first 3 volumes before attempting Volume 4 and Bootcamp again. They are crazy hard! It's possible you might get frustrated with those but if you perfect Volumes 1-3 you will probably like them better.

Meredith- Breaking Bad is a series on AMC and is my absolute favorite all time show!! It's very intense and dark though, but there is some dark humor sprinkled in there too. It's very serialized so you have to watch it from the beginning to get into it. It's amazing! I love the Walking Dead, too, like Jean. I can't wait for season 3!:D

For Lydia's birthday we are going to just have family up and a few friends. We are also going to have her girl cousins stay over night for a little girl party. Should be fun. Since she has the Disney princessess on her brain I'll probably get her some stuff like that. Lydia is sooo incredibly girlie! I don't know where she gets it. She loves dress up clothes, the more sparkle the better. I really wish I had gotten some of the disney princessess dresses they sold there but they were really expensive. $65 a piece!

Okay, gotta run. The next patient came early during my lunch time and is just sitting out there all screened in and waiting for me:rolleyes:. Better cut it short, I guess!

Heellloooo gals! We are indeed such an active forum right now! Can't keep up! Jean's right though. It's having Meredith and Si, plus the excitement of both sets of new workouts! So great! Love to read all the new posts. But it takes up so much of my time! I don't even wander to the other threads like a lot of you. And, I don't take notes and rely on my memory (spotty:eek:) to answer.

Carolyn, my son does do legs on STS. I figure, why not?? He's not working out otherwise. Boy, I'd love an equivalent Groupon on a spin bike!!! Keep us posted if one comes up! Subscribing to Groupon would just add more emails I don't have time to sift through. I think HC will be tough after TBT (I recall getting DOMS after that workout). I still feel my UB aches today from Monday's STS TB. Did I mention that I don't like the too-fast pace that STS TB goes? (Slow and Heavy sounds like my speed.) Carolyn, summer seems sooo much busier than the school year, don't you think? Sorry, but I don't have a tablet to help you out on that reply question.

Jean, I think lunges on the discs or paper plates are harder. It's probably meant to be that way, but I don't feel stable or that I use the right form. And it messes with my knees. Heavens, your shih tzu sleeps a ton! That's probably normal for an aged dog? Hmm, maybe I shouldn't have planted kale seeds in the spring??

Missy, congrats on scorching off another lb! You're inspirational! Hope your back gets back to 100% soon! Really to difficult to work out with back pain.

I did TTM today and I still like it!:D True there are a lot of jumps. I swear that my knees are all the better from Hydraplenish. Otherwise, they'd be in pain after a workout like TTM. I just love that there was a little of everything in there--cardio, weights, abs, conditioning!

Incidentally, I have never gotten the hang of RS, SM, and HIS, etc (which are too dancy for me), but I don't have trouble with SB, SJP, C&W.

You guys make me want to check out HST!

The weather this week has been warm, but mercifully dry (not humid)! Hallelujah!:)

Better get some stuff done. ttyl

Hello. Not much time. I am swamped!!! I have been out of the office all morning. Running errands for work!!!

Betty---You should deffinately check out HST. It is awesome. I love love love it!!!!! I just love working the lower body. I am so glad Carolyn talked me into it. I think between HST and B&G, I will have a smokin hot lower body by Christmas!!!! I just want to lose a few more inches on the lower body!!!!:p

Okay....no more time. Dr needs me. I have employees on vacation for the rest of the week, nurse today, receptionist tomorrow and friday. Looks like I will be very busy for the rest of the week!!! Gotta Run.

BBL!!!! :)

Good Evening! I just finished 4DS Kickbox. It actually has alot of the high step usage in it too. And I just love the ab workout in the DVD. I can feel that I got a good whole body workout!!!

Okay, I am exhausted. Off to shower and go to bed. I am tired tonight.

Chat tomorrow. Good Night! :)

Hey :)

Just wanted to post a quick hello and then I'll go back and read all the posts.

Athletic Step done....harder than I remember but of course last time I wasn't 6 months pregnant.

Lunch with sis and baby....sad to see them leave.

Work is good but man it was busy. Thank goodness for tomorrow off :)

Marie

One more thing. Today doing legs Cathe said she doesn't know what is harder , low plane lunges or paper plate lunges. What is you all's opinion? I think paper plate lunges are harder than low plane.

Jean

I'm thinking low plane lunges, especially the ones in 4DS when you start from the floor. UGH! That was crazy hard.

Hello! I didn't take notes, so a quick reply from what I can remember. I don't yet have my Lavender Lemon Cookies Posted, I'll have to add that to my to do list. :) Thank you all for the Step and Cardio recommendations. Super helpful to hear the different perspectives. Colleen, sorry about your knees and all and yeah try out the lavender spray on your sheets and pillow before bed, it's divine! I'm going to check out the quick link videos tomorrow or the next day and browse through all of your suggestions everyone! Thank You so much for all of your suggestions! Super helpful and thankful! I decided to get a quick download (Step Moves, and Athletic Step) in the meantime, based on what you all said and since they are a part of the STS Shock series. I tried the Step Moves today b/c I love dance, but it was a little too hard for me to get all of the combos down on my first try. I previewed the Athletic Step video and that one looks a little easier as far as combinations go?

I can't remember who asked, but yes ALWAYS have something to eat before a morning workout or a workout in general, even if in the wee early hours. Muscle Glycogen stores need to be sufficient and replenished and blood sugar levels need to be stabilized in order to prevent muscle catabolism, otherwise all of your hard work will be useless. I would have a protein and carbohydrate source at a minimum and something that has a little fat is fine as long as it is lower in fat and higher in carbs and has some protein. It could be as simple as a yogurt and a banana, which I find to be easily digested too. I often have yogurt, berries, banana topped with cinnamon and cocoa nibs before my workout, but depends on the day.

I can't remember what else was said...I'll keep you all posted on my Step decisions, STS workouts and glad to hear many of you are enjoying the blog. Thanks again for all of the wonderful step and cardio recommendations.

P.S. I'm a little apprehensive about STS Disc 3 tomorrow...legs have never been my strength and I dread them! Hoping I enjoy the workout even though I know it will be HARD!

Whew! I just finished the To the Max Extreme premix! What a great workout! I did do it barefoot but with lots of modifications  lol. I just can't do sneakers...they hurt my knees and ankles too dang much. I do want to get a pair of lightweight/minimalist ones if I ever decide to try some of Cathe's step videos again in the future but this workout was fine with my modifications. I can do plyo barefoot on my mats, just not a ton of it and I have to keep the step lower than Cathe. So here's what I did, if anyone is interested.

I was able to do the 8 inch step like Cathe in the solid step part. It is amazingly easy to keep that part low impact. The part where she runs up on the step I just did a basic step up and I've always been able to do plyo jacks just fine barefoot.

For the Step Tabata and 30/20 Hiit sections I took the step to 6 inches. I just didn't want to risk my ankles and knees. I might try 8 inches on the 30/20 one next time (Cathe does 10 inches) but I got a mighty fine sweat with the 6 inch. I was totally anaerobic in this workout quite often so it might not even be necessary. There were several parts I used my rebounder in lieu of the move Cathe was doing. The part that Missy mentioned (hops back and forth straddling the step and then hop up) as well as the hop scotch jumps, I just did jump rope on my rebounder. I also can't do disc jacks or swimmers lunges on the discs so I did those on the rebounder, too. Whenever it was feasible I tried to keep it low impact or the jumps small. I've always been able to do box jumps barefoot just fine as long as I do them wide.

I was able to do compound legs and the core without any modifications. When it got to the fitness tabata section (before compound legs) I just skipped that whole chapter. I was pooped!!! Maybe another time! lol

All in all it was a great, sweaty workout and my knees and ankles feel right as rain. This is just what works for me, though, guys so please use shoes if that's what you all feel more comfortable with! I don't want anyone getting hurt on my account!!:(

Okay, gotta run and get in the shower. I'll be back for more personal posts later!

Hello! I did the Double Cardio pre-mix from the 4-Day Split, plus the abs from Lower Intensity Step. I was noticing my appetite is increasing!

Jean, I wonder what Cathe is feeling sometimes too. In some of the workouts she bangs out all those pushups, but then groans at some of the weighted exercises. I think the pushups are the hardest of them all! How awesome that you can match her endurance! That’s gotta be a good feeling! Oh, and I think low plane lunges are harder than paper plate lunges. And I love CostCo too – did you know they are adding a bunch of organic foods there? They have organic eggs, milk, bread and jam. Some of the pre-packed veggies and fruits are organic too!

Mary, I hope your knee feels better! Your bands snapped?! Ouch! I don’t have a swingset available, but I showed the STS Tower (in the disk) to a handyman friend of mine and asked if he could fashion something together for me. I hope he can!

Colleen, have fun with your daughter’s birthday. You did well NOT to buy the dresses at Disney World, they are like 2/3 the price at the Disney store and you can even find them at second hand stores like Ross and TJ Maxx. I’ll bet people even have them on Craigslist. That Horizontal Conditioning sounds brutal! Thanks for the info on Breaking Bad. I probably don’t have time in my life to take on a new series, but we’ll see. So, you do the step routines without sneakers too?! Amazing! I can’t even imagine doing it that way. I was pre-viewing TTM and CF (you dang enablers, you!) and was noting the 10” step height with a bit of dread. Cathe is 5’2”; I’m 5’6” and 8” usually feels just fine for me (and sometimes 6” is even better :))

Betty, I’m with you on the Groupon e-mails. I set up a separate e-mail account just for Groupon and Social Living so I don’t have those e-mails coming to my main e-mail account every day. I had trouble with HIS too. Lots of rewinding when I was first learning it and today, my brain was seriously challenged trying to remember how it all went.

Missy, I have always liked High Step Training as well! It’s a great workout and I’m always feeling like I tightened up my butt a little when it’s all done. Same with Butts and Guts. Oh and I like the abs in the 4DS too! I was going to do Cardio Kicks today, but then with legs up tomorrow, I decided not to.

Marie, kudos to you for still stepping at 6 months pregnant! I think I wouldn’t have the balance for that, but you are going to be so glad you kept exercising!

Si, I am LOVING all of the nutrition tips! Keep them coming, please! I hate exercising with food in my stomach and since I’m a single mother of two kids under 7, I always work out in the morning before they get up (usually around 4:30 or 5). I try NOT to eat after 8 p.m. Am I really screwing myself by not eating something before I work out? Good luck with Legs today!!!

Okay, I’m officially all caught up! Have a great day, ladies!

Meredith- I LOVE 4DS Double Cardio. Probably one of my favorite step routines :)

Si- Good luck with legs today! Hope it goes well!

Colleen- You ladies are making me scared of the new workouts ;) Great tips for changing it up though..thanks! Btw I can't believe I forgot to mention this yesterday. Boot Camp/ME were the Deal of the Day so I bought them :) Super pumped!

Jean- I LOVE Costco too! So fun to stock up on a bunch of stuff :)

I couldn't sleep when I got home last night so I was up til 2am watching TV and munching on cucumbers with Green Goddess dressing. I just can't get enough of that snack lately. It's an everyday thing. My mom asked for food requests when I was up in Duluth last weekend and that was mine.

Just finishing up my oatmeal with walnuts and wheat germ. I swear it's all I have eaten for breakfast in quite some time. I think I need to switch it up.

Workout today will be LIS LIC. Love that one :) Off to the basement I go.

Good Afternoon Friends! I am so busy today. No time to post. I am working at the front desk. So it is crazy!

I did my cardio this morning. I am planning on doing TBT tonight. The entire workout!!! Just love it.

I will catch up tonight!!!

Have a nice day!:)

Good day, ladies!

What's the difference between HST and HSC? They seem very similar. I don't have either, since, yes, I don't have the topper yet.

I'm with Meredith and rarely eat before I exercise! Is that wicked bad?

Jean and Colleen, I just unearthed the scoop from the greens protein today. It's huge! No wonder Jean you say you can't have 2 scoops of that!:D Last time I tried 2, I meant tbsps! I didn't like it. I just measure out 1 tbsp.

Carolyn, do you send your kids to summer camps? Where I live parents send their kids to all kinds of camps all summer, even sleepaway for as long as 7 weeks! I feel really weird keeping my kids at home with me. I had never sent my oldest to anything (thus the phrase "antisocial much" applies to him:D), but I send my youngest to one fun class week a summer (a few hrs a day). I like it that you guys hang out by the pool and have cousins and friends over. We hang out less now that the kids are older, cousins included.

Gals, I've never tried 4DS Double Cardio, believe it or not. And Colleen, I only did TTM straight, I haven't pulled out the discs (phew) etc from the premixes yet. Btw, I peeked at the HC site, and whatever Sandra does, I feel confident that Cathe has or will do!:D

Speaking of Costco, I feel that the ones here in the Boston area don't have enough organic things. At my sis' in Northern CA, they have way many more things to choose from, with the indicative green labels for organics. We are just not there yet in terms of options and availability, nor green labels. (For example, organic raspberries are not offered here.) Incidentally, I feel that these big warehouses contribute to the fattening of America, with all those giant sizes or huge qtys of not necessarily healthy items.

Si, I'm with you and Jean, and have dreaded legs! I too hate lunges, and squats! But I just forced myself to do them. One step at a time. Good luck!

Meredith, may I say you are gorgeous yourself! And I'll second Carolyn's kudos to you for being a strong woman in both senses of the word!

Carolyn, I'd say those ME step-ups are killer. When I first tried the workout, I did a double-take, thinking, didn't I just do these?? Cathe is all-knowing! It's a great workout!

Spent too much time today dress shopping for a wedding, and the same wintry colors, shapeless, boring dresses are still out there! Unbelievable!

Better go do some laundry! Have a great day!

Si- you are going to love Athletic Step! That is a super fun workout! Unfortunately, all the impact was tough on my knees and ankles so I've put all step aerobics videos aside for now. I need to find some decent shoes for those kids of videos! Step aerobics with impact and intricate choreography is the one kind of workout I haven't been able to do barefoot. I'm a little afraid that even with shoes I'll suffer...:(. I think the next time I try them I'm going to take the step even lower...like 4 inches:eek:. I thought of some others that I tried and you might like: Imax 2, Body Max 2, Intensity and Low Max. I really liked her Low Impact Circuit video, too and that one I can actually do barefoot since it's low impact and the choreography is pretty basic.
I definitely need to eat before I workout in the morning! I always have oatmeal (lately it's been organic steel cut oats). I've taken to putting a little bit of cinnamon and a teaspon of coconut oil in it, too. Yummy! I'm lucky in that I often don't have to get to work until 10:00 am so I can get up by 6:00 am, eat (and drink coffee/sit on the computer going through posts;)) and work out at 7:00 am. I don't know what I would do if I worked super early in the morning!

Betty- we really would like the kids to do some of those summer camps but they do not cater to moms who work! Every one I have looked at requires you to pick up or drop off the kids at odd hours throughout the afternoon while I'm working. We aren't too comfortable sending them for sleep away camps yet. We do have them in swimming lessons though, and our district offers a 3 week summer school session that I have them do. I would totally be all over the idea of all year school schedules with no summer break. That way they would lots of 2-3 week breaks sprinkled throughout the year instead of one long summer break. Maybe then we could take a winter vacation somewhere tropical without taking the kids out of school!:D

Oh, and yes as far as Cathe doing HC stuff...you know I've noticed she's got some of those moves incorporated into her core sections of these two new ones! I loved the side plank "snatch" move she did in TTM today. Very similar to something Sandra would do!

Okay, you guys have me wanting to do HST again. I have it and only did it once. I remember being disappointed by all the step ups which I like but thought there was too many and not enough lower body variety. I need to try it again, though!

BTW, Missy do you have Lower Body Blast? I think you would LOVE that one! Alternating that with B&G would totally firm up the bootay!:p

Marie- you can do the new workouts... just modify modify modify! Like me! ;)
There is NO shame in lowering that step height!! Safety first!:p Just be careful going into your last trimester. The balance will be all screwy-louey with baby getting bigger!

Carolyn- I need to do ME sometime too! Another workout I have that is still a virgin!

Meredith- the hunger monster hits HARD in STS ! I especially noticed it in Meso 2. I tried to increase my intake of lean protein, rather than just over all calories. Hey, another question for Si!:D I know what you mean about Cathe and the dreaded 10 inch step height in TTM! How on earth does she do the plyo moves with that height! You girls that can do that rock! I have no excuse apparently since I'm 5'2" just like Cathe:eek:. I blame my knees! I still got a killer workout today though so I'm not going to sweat the lower height! I do the same thing with her Hiit 40/20. I tried matching her height once. Not doing that again!

Okay, gotta go. Catch you all later!

Colleen, I just had steel cut oats this am too. I've never used coconut oil on anything, but I'll try it on oatmeal next time.

I agree with you on year-round schooling. Summer is chaos trying to keep the kids occupied. I think I'd like a short school summer session. My kids need the structure.

I'm the same height as you and Cathe and I have trouble with two risers on step routines. I keep tripping. Not on TTM though.

Later!

Good Evening! Just finished my workout and showered. I have been non stop since I got up this morning. I am exhausted!!!

Colleen---Yes I have Lower Body Blast. I do like it too. I have so many I forget about them. Thats sounds great....LBB, B&G to firm up the butt!!! I will also add in HST!!!

Meredith---STS increaded my appetite too. I tried to eat healthy snacks and lean proteins. Did not want to add in bad calories.

Carolyn---I am sure your friend was just being nice. Does she exercise? Is she heavy? I am sure you look like a fit/toned women. Not just skinny. Don't let it bother you. I think everytime you meet with your friend you always feel this way. Just keep what you are doing and the pds will come from muscle. But muscle does not grow over night. Maybe this next series will help with the muscle pds. :) Please, don't let it stress you. You are a happy sexy mom!!!

As for the morning exercise....I always run in the am so I do not eat before, I eat right after. I get up and within 10 minutes on am moving. In the evening I always eat dinner before my personal trainer "Cathe" attacks me!!!! hahaha

Okay...I have to go rest now!!!! Chat later!

Carolyn, don't let your friend get to you! Be confident in your healthy, toned, fit, sexy self! You are awesome, and most people would kill to be in your position! She obviously can see with her own eyes from your night out that you aren't starving or depriving yourself, so could she be jealous of you, and is undermining you?? Unless one is anorexic-/bulimic-looking, which you're not, there is no such thing as too skinny! Be proud and flaunt it! Show those muscles you work so hard for! High five!:)

Btw, what does everyone add to oatmeal for protein? I add almonds and pumpkin seeds but feel it's not enough. Protein--is that an American fallacy? In Italy, breakfast is usually just carbs (pastries, focaccia, etc), and people are fine.

Good night, my friends!

Happy Friday, Ladies!

I just finished up Disk 3 (Legs) and I liked it! Cathe was “giddy” in it. I noticed she called it the “first” workout of STS, so there must have been a change up in the order at some point. I didn’t do a lot of the 1RM for legs, so I was guessing a bit on the weight to use. Whoever said I was going to buy higher dumbbells was right! There were already a couple of moves where the recommended weight exceeded my 25 lbs., so I just used a barbell. Is there anything wrong with that? I may go out and buy a couple of sets this weekend, but they are expensive, so we’ll see. I christened my Costco rug for the disks and it worked well. I’d like to try it with some of the Low Impact series disks and see if it works for those too. You know what else? For all that weight, I thought the hardest moves were those involving the stability ball on the wall. Coming up from those deep squats was the hardest thing! Also, a couple of moves I liked (and had never done before): the move where you lunge and then lift up your leg into a front raise – that was surprisingly a burner! I also liked the leg lift over the ball at the end of the workout. I noticed that I move a bit slower than Cathe in this workout, so I had to count my own reps and rewind the workout quite a bit. Hopefully I’ll get better. Finally, I wanted to say that I’m tired of the “extended stretch” already. I wish she had mixed that up a bit more. Maybe I’ll have to pull out Stretch Max (a rarely used disk in my house). Okay, enough babble from me.

Colleen, it’s been a long time since I’ve done Muscle Endurance, but I remember it being a good one! Like you, I always went for the Boot Camp workout instead. Thanks for your kind words! Very sweet of you. Do you aim to do workouts barefoot? If so, why? Is there some benefit to that? I wear Rykas (like Cathe) for the aerobic stuff. You can usually find good prices on these at DSW – sometimes in the clearance section too! I agree with your husband: I think your friend was jealous! I’m sure you look amazing! No one would ever say that I was too skinny , so I can’t even imagine having that “problem.” Don’t overthink what just one person says. What do the people that love you the most say? Have fun at the beach today!

Marie, I really want to like cucumbers (I have 2 from the veggie delivery), but they make me burp like crazy! (TMI?) Since I burped so much when I was pregnant just normally, I never would have gone there. You’re inspiring me though. I was going to use them for my eyes, but maybe I’ll just have to eat them  Actually, I like reading about what everyone is eating. Gives me new ideas.

Betty, all I know is that I LOVED HST, but probably only did HSC once. I’m a lot of help, huh? You must get the topper. It expands what you can do with your risers so much! What is “greens protein?” On CostCo, yes, you need to be careful about what you end up buying there, but the prices are SO much better than other stores. I find myself making it more of a regular stop instead of every month or so. Thank you also for your kind words. Between you and Colleen, I’m feeling like a goddess over here  I put vanilla yogurt and fruit in my oatmeal. Sometimes nuts too. I’m going to add the coconut oil, like someone mentioned. I never thought of that, but yum! Trader Joe just started selling it and I bought some. I used to just use the coconut oil on my skin, but read about how good it is to eat.

That’s all for now.

Woo hoo! It worked! very cool! My kids hogged the computer so i am on the tablet. I looked up oatmeal and protien. Mine has 7g of protien per half cup. Not much i guess.
No doms from yesterdays wo. Im bummed. Not sure what i will choose today.
We r going to beach with a ton of people. Not sure what it will be like. We r going around 1:00ish. Going to be a hot one. Yuck

Carolyn, I didn't give oatmeal enough credit. My 1/4c of quick-cook steel cut oats has 5g (1/2c is too much to eat at once though). So adding nuts will up it a little more. Si, what else can we top off our oatmeal with to add more protein?

Great day to enjoy the beach. Just lather up and wear a hat! Rock a bikini!

I did Cardio Supersets this morning, but subbed kickbox moves for some of the disc stuff. That's because I almost reached for MMA KB first, so I had that on my mind.

Meredith, I totally agree with you on extended stretch! I wish Cathe could have done a diff one for each mesocycle. It's hard to put in another dvd. And for some reason, I really don't like that yellow, one-shoulder top she's wearing.

And my knees don't like the stab ball wall squats.

Another workout where Cathe is giddy is SJP! She does endless squats and lunges (which I so hate), and she's perky all the way! (Sorry, the rest of the gals have all heard these comments from me before.)

Ugh, the heat and humidity are moving in!:(

Have a great day!
