I have three barbells, one 6ft with threaded ends, two that are four-and-a-half to five feet long with smooth ends. I use sliplocks with one of the smooth-ended barbells, and butterfly clips with the other one. The butterfly clips take a little more hand strength to get on and off, but they seem to hold the plates a little tighter with less movement of the plates during lifting.
An unloaded five-foot smooth-ended barbell is pretty darn cheap, considering the use you can get out of it. Oh, I also prefer the butterfly clips b/c they make less noise swapping plates than the sliplocks. Important when the baby is sleeping on the couch and you're trying to sneak in a workout!
