Picking Out Baby Names

Clarissa's thread gave me the idea for this one:

What are your kids' names, and why did you choose them? (the names, not the kids...ha) Those with fur babies are included as well. I named my dog Snoopy Walter after 1) the cartoon character and 2) my late grandfather.

In addition, if you have an interesting story about your own name, please share!

My 1st daughter, Megan, is named after the character "Meggie" in The Thorn Birds.

My 2nd daughter, Naomi, got her name because I loved the sound of it. I think the Biblical origin is pretty neat, but that wasn't the inspiration.

Both girls' middle names are simply names that I thought sounded pretty with their first names: Megan Christine and Naomi Marie.

My mother gave her kids short, 4-letter names so that we'd be able to spell them in school. 4 women in our family (my poor niece included) all share the same middle name. I myself am not pleased with her lack of creativity. My husband, however, claims to love my name. I think he's just being nice. :p It it wasn't such a hassle, I'd change my name to something groovy. Maybe something Native American.

Lori! You could change your name to Princess Consuela Bananahammock, like Phoebe did in Friends :p

My daughter's name doesn't have any special connection. I just wanted a pretty, old-fashioned name, so I picked Sophie. Her middle name is Karen, after my sister.

My son, Benjamin - we liked the name. I don't like the short version of many boy's names so we call him his full name. We didn't want to name him after any fam members so as to not hurt anyone else's feelings. Didn't want to make him a Jr either, neither me nor hubby are into that. Also causes a lot of issues later in life with crossed credit bureaus and such. His middle name is Xavier, because we liked it and it is a bit different. We were going to use it as a 1st name, but couldn't find a middle name to go with it.

My dog when I was younger was Chocolate, because I love chocolate, although he was more caramel colored. Then there was Spyro - named after a video game dragon, he was kinda a spastic dog, so the name fit. My current pooch is Vlad - named after Dracula. (I'm a bit touched in the head:p:p) He's black and brown and will be pretty big so the name fits. Its better than "Killer" We also thought Espresso would have been a good name, but he'll be too big for that name. And Guiness, but we are not Guiness drinkers. The cats name is Merlin, because he's a magical mystical kitty. He's black, so the name fits. We thought we were being original with that one, but we have met several people since who have kitties named Merlin. However, I have never met another Chocolate, Spyro, or Vlad dog. Perhaps I am better with dog names!

I picked DD's Troy Alexander for no familial reason, just that it was powerful. Lara Rose was pretty to me for my DD. Being that my DH is a Russian linguist on the side, he loved Dr. Zhivago and Lara was the main character in that film. Although, the problem with her name is people will say LAURA and Lara like "Sarah" sound-alike (think Lara Spencer on Entertainment tonight - it is NOT pronounced that way) It is Lara, like "car - a", you know?
:)

We picked Isaac for my oldest mainly because we really liked it--not too common but still a regular name, if that makes sense. We also liked the Biblical story of a longed-for child and the fact that it means "laughter" but I wouldn't say it was wholly based on that.

My second son is Robert Ewan but we call him Ewan. I wanted to have Robert as a middle name (after my step-dad) but it didn't flow well as a middle name. We just both agreed on loving the sound of Ewan--and again it was not terribly common but an actual name. Yes, we like Ewan McGregor but didn't specifically name our Ewan after him. By the way, Ewan is pronounced Yew-un.

Our puppy is Sgt Pepper after the Beatles album. DH's first Boston Terrier was named Abbey after Abbey Road so I thought it would be a cool way to continue the Beatles tradition. Mainly we just call him Pepper.

I love my own name: Elaine Joelle and my maiden name is a lovely French name. I've always been called Lainie, though, partially because my parents were big fans of singer (now actress also) Lainie Kazan.

fun thread!

our girls are
gina kathryn
isabel kaelyn
julia kate

we just liked the first names
the middle names we wanted a variation of my name (katy)
if we ever have more/a boy he would have a variation of dh's name

our dog is mufasa. hes a great dane and always in the way like we imagine a lion would be!:D

My oldest is Maxwell Hyde - His name is actually his maternal grandma's madien last names. I loved Max already - so having the family name was a nice combo - Especially with my Scottish last name Proudfit..

Mason Daniel is the second one - Mason being another strong Scottish name and Daniel being is dad's name.

Zoey the lab - was a name my friend came up with after she got her dog Avu first - A to Z LOL... :)

Snoop Dogg (D-O-Double G)- the Puggle - Snoopy was a beagle so that covers that aspect - then my DS's have always liked Snoop Dogg the rapper

Ninja - The kitten is just crazy and all over the place and chases the dogs around - so it started as Kitten Mitten - or Mitter - but now Ninja seems to work best....

Fun thread... :)

My daughter's name is Raley. She was named after my husband's first grade teacher, Ms. Raley. Her middle name is Drew, named for no one in particular, but we like it. My son's name is Cooper. We had a hard time coming up with a name for him. It took months. His middle name is Blade, again for no one in particular, we just like the sound of it.

My son Nicholas Christopher (he's 12) was named after "Nicholas" on Young and the Restless. :) I just loved that name. His middle name is his dad's middle name.

My son Luke Lawrence (4 months) was named "Luke" just because I really love that name. Lawrence is my younger brother's name. He passed away in 2003 and I wanted to give him that middle name in honor of my brother.

My oldest son is Oliver Reed. (I love the movie Love Story, and the main character is Oliver Barrett.) My husband's middle name is Reed, and it's an old family name...
My middle son is Henry Joseph. My aunt Henrietta died before he was born, and he is named after her. We also liked the name very much. Joseph is my husband's grandfather's name.
My youngest is Charles (Charlie) Stephen, named after Charlie Brown and my father, who is Stephen, and me, Stephanie...

We love old fashioned/old-man names! LOL

My oldest - Rocco Eric - I always loved the name Rocco and since we have a very Italian last name, it just has great ethnicity! Eric is after my grandfather, father and brother.

My middle - Gabrielle Rose - DH and I couldn't agree on a girl's name and decided on the way to the hospital on Gabrielle. (A boy would've been Dominic.) Rose was after my grandmother's sister.

My last - Isabella Cecelia - once again couldn't decide on a girl's name. Was a toss up between Isabella and Ava. Cecelia was after my grandmother.

You all have picked such creative names for your kiddos. :)

I do not have kids or have plans to but I'm kind've bummed by the fact that my siblings did not use my grandpa's name. Not a really big deal but he was such a wonderful man that we all loved and respected so very much. I have four nephews, a neice and another neice on the way (Feb 18). My grandpa's name was Benigno (everyone called him Beni) so it's kind've a difficult name.

I like the names my siblings picked though. In case anyone out there is looking for baby name ideas I'll list them.

DS's kids:
Jorge Daniel, Matthew Blake and Tristan Aaron

DB's kids:
Maddisen Lynn, Blake Anthony and Baby Girl ???

My DD (4 yrs) is named Audra Elizabeth. I found her first name in a baby book and fell in love with it (it's a form of Audrey). I wanted something uncommon, but not weird. So it fit the bill. Her middle name is after my Mom, her grandmother, who's first name is Elizabeth.

My DS (16 mos) is named Logan James. My husband claims ownership for this child's name. Logan is Wolverine's name on the XMEN movie. My husband is a major GEEK (star wars, video games, the whole 9 yards!), so he heard the name and liked it. Luckily I liked it too. I think it's getting to be a more common name these days, but it's still not as popular as some. As for the middle name, that's in honor of my husband, who's middle name is also James (but, my FIL and maternal grandfather also have James as their first names, so they're being honored, too).

As names go, my husband and I agree, we like first names that aren't that common (but, again, nothing weird) and we like middle names to be in honor of a family member.

My name is Kara Jo. First name came about for no fancy reason, except that both my parents liked it. My middle name, though, is in honor of my maternal grandmother, who was named Josephine. I didn't like my first name growing up, but now I love it. You don't hear it too often. I always love it when I hear of a baby named Kara -- haha! :p ;) It warms my heart!

My daughters all have Slavic names, being that I'm 100% Serbian. DH, who's not, was all for giving them ethnic names, bless him:)

My oldest, Danica (DA nee tsa) Grace is named after my maternal grandma. Her name means "morning star" in Serbian. My grandma loves it:) People always ask if we named her after Danica Patrick. Funny thing is dd doesn't even like that pronunciation.

My middle daughter's name is Milla (Mee la) Rae. It means "beloved, dear" in Serbian. I have always loved that name and when we had our first it was a toss up. So we decided if we ever had another girl we'd use it.

And our youngest is Nevena (Neh ve nah) Leigh. Her name means "marigold". We chose it cause it was unusual, even in Serbian. And we liked the short version Neve-like Neve Campbell. Plus we were running out of cool Slavic names that weren't too out there or hadn't already been used by others.

I'm named after Italian actress Claudia Cardinalle. And my brother Kristian is named after Fletcher Christian in Moby Dick, I think? My mom loves old movies;) And they're spelled with a k because there is no c in the Serbian language.

I've always loved reading and learning about names. I used to read baby name books long before I ever thought of naming my own. So interesting to see how people choose the names they give their kids.

Great thread!

Clarissa...I love your DD's name! I am named Lara because my grandmother's favorite movie was Dr. Zhivago and she loved "Lara's Theme" from the movie. I can relate to the rhyming with Sarah!! Before I got married, everyone mispronounced my last name, too. I had some real interesting names!

We named our DD Finley because we loved it and it is not very common. Her middle name is Hope after my DH's sister that passed away a few years ago.
Our dog is Sophie. My DH was sorry we named our dog that because he wanted to name our daughter Sophie when we found out we were going to have a girl. My dog loves her name though, so she got to keep it:).
Our cat is McCavity from "Cats". We call him Mac. He is an evil cat though!

My cat's name is "Mac" too! He's named after my all time favorite literature character, James Alexander Malcom Mackenzie Fraser from Diana Gabaldon's Outlander series:)

I had a good friend in middle school named Lara-beautiful name:)

Lara- I have seen you on here before and have often wondered how you pronounced it!

Klaudia -
Your children's names are beautiful! We are a Slavic family, alas I married into Italian so there you have it.

My oldest DD is 15. She does have my maiden name but her name is Nicole Marie. It was pretty to me & not too trendy.

My youngest is 3 & her name is Mia Isabella. We really wanted Isabella for her first name but it was one of the most popular baby names the year before. We fell in love w/the name Mia though & I'm so glad we chose it. Our last name (Iaccarino) is long, so we figured that we'd give her a nice short first name to even it out ;)
