Pentagenarians & Beyond: W/B 12/17

My workout is done. I did Build and Burn Cardio Core, 27 minutes, heart rate 129 average, 161 max, 179 calories, 1,963 steps. I followed it with the Upper body workout, 29 minutes, heart rate average 104, max 140, 128 calories, 813 steps. Total time was 57 minutes, 307 calories.
Valerie, I guess you will not probably know what caused it to happen, but glad it is healing.

Good morning,

Merry (belated) Christmas!

Sorry I was MIA....I came down with John's cold, but mine was a horrible head cold. We didn't end up going to either my brother’s on Christmas Eve or my cousins on Christmas. We could both barely get up. I was feeling fine, running around on Saturday getting all the stuff to make for Christmas Eve, then it hit me like a ton of bricks. We have done nothing since Saturday evening. We are both better today though.

Judy, thanks for the link on the protein powder. I will see if my friend will try that. She does need extra protein for sure.

Diane Sue, I just ignored my FitBit 250 step reminder for the last 3 days. :). Your new room sounds like it will be awesome.

Valerie, good job on going with the 15 pound DB's. Weighted gloves can add a pound, or even look into Plate Mates. They are a little on the pricy side but are really useful when having to bridge that 5 pound gap.
https://www.amazon.com/PlateMate-Mi...coding=UTF8&psc=1&refRID=TFG24CE31233A8N074YN
They are each 1.25 pounds so they add 2.5 to each DB...
Good that your surgical site is healing. I have never heard of a keloid. It was a good idea stay with the anti-biotics , it seems like you and your DH were right. I would definitely go back to the Derm and let them know what has happened.

Lori, that is great that you go to your son's GF parents for Christmas Eve. I should take a look at the Live Fit Tower workout.

Take care,

Good Morning,
Deb, it’s good to hear from you. I’m glad that you’re feeling better.

This morning I did X Train Chest, Back, and Shoulders. My time was 60 minutes and 204 calories burned. Average heart rate was 102 and maximum heart rate 140. I needed to get back to my routine after yesterday’s indulgence.

We had a wonderful Christmas with a lots of family and good food. I hope that all of you had a good day as well. Daughter number 3 left for the airport at 6:00 a.m. She has to work this afternoon :(. Everyone else is still here.

Diane Sue, I’m impressed that you got in a workout on Christmas Day. It sounds like you are making great progress on the new room.

Valerie, it’s good that the infection is better. That is disappointing that the doctor didn’t discover it sooner.

Hello to Judy and Lori. Have a wonderful day.

Today I did Kelly's Build and Burn premix Kettlebell, Cardio, Lower tabata mix, 41 minutes, actual was 34 on the menu, but I stopped to put on my 1# gloves after the warm up and quickly wrote the info down once in awhile . I liked this one as well. It got in all of the lower moves except the Bridges. Calories burned was 264, heart rate average 117, max 146. We have lots of running to do today and I need to break open another can of pain and get more painting done.
workout today
banded side steps 4 sets blue band
kickstand deadlifts 16# dbs (15 with 1# gloves) 4 sets
carddio and kettlebell segments 20# kettlebell
squat variations 21# dbs 4 sets
side lunge into knee pull Bodyweight 4 sets
cardio and kettlebell segments
Front back lunges 16# dbs 4 sets

plie variations 21# dbs 4 sets
wide stance deadlift and squat up 21 # dbs 4 sets

Deb, I am sorry that you got that head cold. It has been going around here. My daughter has been home through most of the holidays with the youngest grandchild. They did finally come to the Christmas family day yesterday. My dil was coughing like crazy yesterday. It has take me a long time to get over it. I have always used weighted gloves or looped 1 or two pound weights with handles onto my threaded dumbbell bars or bar bell for added weight increments if I did not want to wear the weighted gloves.

Carolyn, the room is getting closer to done. I am anxious to get everything put together. We have to borrow a pick up or my sons trailer to go pick up some wood and wallboard for the closet today. I wasn't sure if I was going to do a workout yesterday. I was surprised i got it in along with some painting before we left :) I am ready to get back into a better eating pattern. You got me wanting cinnamon rolls and I made some. Not many guests at my house and everyone that came in the last couple of days was already over stuffed with holiday food. I have been eating mostly cinnamon rolls instead of other food. This is the reason it has been literally years since I made them. I put some in the freezer, but then ended up pulling them back out for DH.

Valerie, I mentioned the vaseline to my daughter and she says she recommends using it for a lot of stuff. She saw no problem with that. She did say she was sorry they messed up and did not recognize the infection. I was just curious on her thoughts on it.

Deb glad you are Ok and just stuck with a head cold. hope you recover quickly.

well, it is hard to see a doc, tell them what you think is obvious, then get told it is something else, without acknowledging the possibility. and then to have the experience repeat a second time in the same week, with another MD ( my DH)sitting there, saying he thought it was infected. then have the lesion open up by itself and prove that, yes, it is infected! well duhh!!. it was an interesting process. It is vastly improved now but it is just inexcusable she didn’t recognize this was possible, and actually the most likely problem.
Deb, a keloid is a raised scar that some people are prone to get with any kind of cut in the skin as it heals. they can get big and troublesome and don't fade and flatten down like most scars do. it is much more common in people of color. if someone is prone to get these, they can happen every time. I have a couple of surgical scars and I have no keloid formation, and like I said, I am pasty white, northern European ancestry. very unlikely for keloids.

I can't see how Vaseline would be a source of bacteria, but this problem developed after the initial phase when I was using Vaseline and dressing changes every day. It was not obvious and very gradually became a problem on only a part of the scar.

Christmas day I did a rock'em sock'em premix and Icy core. today we went xc skiing for 5 hrs 45 min. I am whipped.

Good morning,

No workout yet for me. I am still under the weather....the headache sometimes starts to creep back in.

Carolyn, I know what you mean about getting back into a routine. Yes, Christmas is all about indulgences, but hey, it's only once a year right?

Diane Sue, you and Carolyn will have to give us those cinnamon roll recipes! They sound really delicious.

Valerie, wow, 5 hours + of CC skiing....that would sure be exhausting. Great job!

Hopefully we will get our new DVD's soon...looking forward to starting something new again.

Waving to Lori & Judy,

Take care,

Today was Intensity , 58 minutes, heart rate average 142, max 170, 5,132 steps, 409 calories. I wanted some yoga and stretching so did You Tube Sarah Beth 15 minutes energy yoga, 38 calories. I like her yoga, because I get some nice stretches out of it. It is not fast paced. Total time was 73 minutes, calories burned 447. I need to head to the store today and stock up a bit. Bad weather is in the forecast this weekend. Maybe it will drop off, but I do not want to be unprepared.

Valerie, I guess if there is ever a next time you will want to use an antibiotic ointment just to be sure. I know you took care of it well.

Debbie, I have about worn my recipe cards out on my recipe for cinnamon rolls and am getting ready to type them out and put it in my recipe journal on S Note on my tablet. I will post it when I am done. What I like is they have you put the icing on while hot and it just melts down through the cinnamon rolls. My recipe makes 36 rolls.

Good morning.. no workout yet but will get to upper body something later today.

Carolyn and Lori.. I just re entered a recipe at WW for lentil soup. the points dropped from 7 to 1. one point!! this was a big complaint for me, vegetarian meals that focused on lentils, beans were so high point under the previous program. If you have recipes like that, it is totally worth it to re enter them. I did not try to edit , but might be even easier. I didn't remember having this particular recipe in WW so I did the work before I saw it come up in the menu. a huge difference, now that my points are 23 for the day.

I am wondering if any of you have a reliable source for how to do endurance training, especially in winter. this happens every year. we stop doing most 3 hour rides and hikes until weather is better. we have been doing occasional mt bikes but not until the snow is gone. the xc ski yesterday wore both of out. snow is unreliable to make up a good regular workout. Fine when it works out, but too many times if doesn't. IMO this is too general a topic to just google, and I will get all sort of stuff popping up. I thought there was a way to look at cathe's newsletters but I don't see a way to do that.

Today I did All Out Low Impact HiiT which was 39 minutes and 280 calories burned. My average heart rate was 132 and maximum heart rate was 258.

Deb, I’m really looking forward to the new workouts too. I like the Build and Burn workouts, but I don’t like having to string things together to get a full workout. I will continue to use them and the WS3 series in certain situations, but I’m ready for more. Usually I use a cinnamon roll recipe from my very old Betty Crocker cookbook, but this time it was the King Arthur recipe for Soft Cinnamon Rolls. The recipe uses a milk and flour starter (Tangzhong).

Valerie, I was surprised when your dermatologist called the infected area a keloid. As you said, they are usually associated with people of color. It doesn’t seem like that would be her first thought.

Diane Sue, I had to go to the store today too. We have gone through so much food! We had rain and sleet this morning but it didn’t last.

Waving hello to Lori, and Judy.

Good evening ladies!

Today was a rest day. Not planned but just had too much running around. My husband bought me a pandora charm bracelet for xmas. It is beautiful but was way too big. So we needed to exchange. The size he bought would be for someone 3x’s my size. We laughed about it. Yesterday I did cardio step jam from WS3 plus a LekFit bounce. We have been eating horribly this week. Starting tomorrow we are planning to get this back in check. We have had our fun now it is back to reality.

Valerie...hope your incision is better. Sounds like it was painful. Hopefully better than it sounded. Thanks for the info on the WW new app. That is great news! Awesome job on the xcountry skiing!

Diane Sue...yes very well could be a YouTube Issue. Oh well. Great job getting a workout in xmas day. I like Intensity. Nice variety in this workout. I have never heard of Sarah Beth. Will need to look her up.

Deb...so sorry to hear you have that nasty cold. My inlaws were also very sick on xmas. We called and they did not want to talk at all. We finally spoke with them today and they still sound terrible.

Carolyn...funny because I love to stream all different workouts together. We are all so different! I think I have an old Betty Crocker cookbook somewhere that was my moms. Not sure how I ened up with it. I have 4 brothers that are all amazing cooks. Not sure what happened with me as cooking is not my thing at all.

Hi to Judy!!!!

Hi Everyone,

Saturday I did Walk Strong 3-Cardio Interval Sculpt, 1 Mile of Motivation, Sunday was a rest day, Monday I did a short Spinerval, yesterday I did 4 DS Legs and today I did 4 DS Shoulders, Calves & Core. I got a shipping notice from Cathe.com today so they must be close to sending out Fit Split.
It's been very cold here, with temperatures in the single digits and wind chills below zero. It looks like it will stay this way for another week or so.

Deb-I'm sorry you have a cold :( I hope you are feeling better soon. I'm really looking forward to the new DVDs too.

Valerie-Wow, almost 6 hours of xc skiing! That is awesome! No way could I do something like that. I have an article about endurance training in the winter from Spinervals. Even though it's about Spinervals, it could probably be applied to other training too:

https://www.spinervals.com/public/98.cfm

Diane Sue-I definitely noticed some new lower body soreness after doing the Build & Burn workouts. I've been meaning to add in some of the Body Design segments too. It seems like that DVD would work well with Build & Burn.

Carolyn & Lori-I have an old Betty Crocker cookbook and a Better Homes and Gardens cookbook that were my mom's. The Betty Crocker one looks like it's from the 1950's and the Better Homes and Gardens one is dated 1963.

Judy

I skipped a workout yesterday. Even my shoulders were sore from skiing. There is a lot of poling going on for braking going down. because not enough snow in places. Very uneven snow cover, being in dense forest.
I have an old Settlement cookbook but have never cooked from it. Tastes and ingredients have really changed a lot. I have one from the 60’s and a much older one that might belong in a museum.

Judy I looked at the spinerval link.... thank you. I am looking for general information that includes more than riding. He thinks 30 min every day is better than 2 hours 3x a week. that surprised me. what I want is more of a game plan on how to develop (or maintain) better endurance over several months of winter, using riding, elliptical, and weight workouts. Every spring we feel like we've been exercising all winter, but when it comes to hiking or riding longer, I lose a lot. I can't spend as long on an indoor bike as I can outdoors. might be more mental more than anything. I do about an hour and feel I'm done.

Good morning,

No workouts yet....still a little under the weather. Speaking of weather....it is 7 degrees here right now...high today around 11. Ugh.. well at least there isn't any new snow.

Diane Sue, thanks in advance for the recipe!

Valerie, I have not really researched endurance workouts...I know that Cathe sometimes mentions what type of workout she is doing, whether it be strength, endurance, cardio...or a touch of each. Maybe there is a way to search or ask which of her workouts are endurance based?

Carolyn, thanks for the info on the cinnamon rolls. My SIL uses that same cookbook. As a matter of fact, hers was so used it was falling apart. I found one on Ebay for her as a birthday give. She was really happy.

Lori, sometimes you just need a rest day....especially after the work you were doing before the holiday. How is Gigi doing? Was she a good girl for Christmas?

Judy, same here...wind chill below zero....but the sun is shining like crazy!

Take care,

I had grandchildren over last night so did not get to my workout till late. I just did a short one. My dog has her yearly vet appointment this afternoon. I saw a few snow flakes floating through the air when the children left. I hope it holds out a bit. I just did Build and Burn Trim down with 10# dumbbells for most. I use 8's for the stuff that hits the shoulders like scare crows and punch outs. Total time was 24 minutes, calories burned 156, heart rate average 129, max 150, 1,732 steps. I still need to do Build and Burn upper again this week to get the entire workout in in a month. I did it Monday so I will do it either tomorrow or Saturday. Cathe's will be coming and I purchased both the downloads and discs.
I will come back after I take Gertie to the vet and get a couple of quick errands done.

I just finished a very long post and I lost it! I was interrupted several times before I finished and was logged out. When I tried to post the message everything was gone:(.

Today I did WS3 Cardio Step Jam for 32 minutes and 221 calories. My average heart rate was 126 and maximum heart rate 140.

Hello to everyone and have a great day.

Today I did a short Spinerval, only 38 minutes.

Deb-It's very cold here too. It was -3 this morning. From what I am reading, much of January may be like this :(

Valerie-I was also surprised about him saying that 30 minutes a day is better than 2 hours 3 times a week. I'm not sure I agree with him on that one. I remember when I was doing a lot of outdoor running and biking and it was always a struggle to maintain fitness in the winter. I had a training group back then and we would meet several times a week for running, in almost any kind of weather. We would do a longer run on Sundays and some Sundays we would go to a spin class right after running.

Carolyn-Nice job with Cardio Step Jam! I'm sorry that you lost a long post :(

Judy that's what my thinking was.... something almost every day. and one day a week, a longer version of something, be it running or cycling. maybe a slower pace but much longer. I guess there will be a lot of varied opinions on this topic. I used to run but never got beyond a little over an hour except for a few races where I got to maybe 90 minutes. long time ago.

I hope this is not huge. I just did a screen shot. I couldnt find a way to put it on Cathe from my tablet.

Valerie, I am not sure about endurance work. The only thing I can think of is a day or two a week of longer spin rides and cardio. I know what you mean on trying to google. You get generalized stuff that is not the specific item that you are looking for. I have an old Nebraska Sand hills cookbook that my mother had for years and may have been my grandmothers. You are right, those old recipes are quite different from some today. I have my grandmother and mother's old recipe boxes and there are some recipes calling for oleo margarine. You get a lot of recipes calling for shortening, which I always ditch and use coconut oil or extra butter. No way am I using shortening. I have a Yankee cookbook that has some interesting recipes in it like paper bag apple pie. And I have the Fannie Farmer cookbook. I don't open those too often although Fannie Farmer has an excellent coconut cake recipe (and I don't care for cake) that uses fresh shredded coconut. I haven't made it in years though.

Deb, that recipe was my grandmother's recipe. I don't know where she got it from. My vets new office was nice today. Gertie was sweet till the went to trim her claws. I was not pleased with her. I wonder if she remembers the last visit to the young woman in the vets office that was so slow and tried putting a muzzle on her. I file her nails every morning before I work out. They did not need much trimming. She did not like their treats. I guess the homemade ones has her spoiled. I found out today that her Rabies vaccine and some other combination last year lasts 3 years. My vet said if it comes up at any time have someone contact him. They did not have their computer system set up for it and not all of the paperwork we received have it down right. I do remember going back inside and asking why I didn't get another tag for Gertie and they said the one she had was good for two more years.

Carolyn, I am looking forward to Cathe's new workouts. I don't mind adding to the Build and Burn workouts. If I had more time this morning I would have went back and did one of the two mixes on the same dvd. I am really getting tired of going to the store. I think I am keeping them in business. I did not want to get stuck inside in bad weather without the groceries I need and I am seeing forecasts that do not look like good driving weather coming up till at least the middle of next week. I am not going out in my little Chevy Spark in bad weather. Sprouts is walking distance , but I am not really wanting to do that either. I would be walking up a main street to get there. I hate when I type a long post to everyone and I lose it. I find sometimes it will stay but lose some of it though.

Judy, I would be inclined to think that endurance would need longer training sessions that 30 minutes. That is why it is endurance. I do not like the freezing temperatures and it is particularly miserable when the wind is whipping around.

Lori, you should check out Sarah Beth Yoga. She is my favorite for yoga on you tube. My eating has not been wonderful either and I have loaded up on some fruits and veggies. I say this after eating jalapeno kettle chips this afternoon. Everything else was good. The cinnamon rolls are finally gone :D Interestingly, I have been so busy with painting etc. that my weight has went down a bit.

I did a 40 min spin, a few sets of pushups and flys, and abs from High Reps. I used cycle Sweat this time. the music is unpleasant and way too loud. no countdown timer. this is my least favorite spin. I thought it was OK the first time but not since then. I stopped at 30 min and took several minutes to turn off the sound track. I'm glad I didn't order the new series. if this is the trend with DVD's, I won't order any more, ever. the music is so loud!. can't hear anything Cathe says because it is totally drowned out and turning volume down does not help.

I have had times when I typed a post, thought I lost it, and then went to start over and when I typed one letter at the blank space, my entire post reappeared in faint print. not sure how this happens. does not happen all the time.
