Pentagenarians & Beyond: W/B 12/17

Valerie-I haven't done a triathlon on my own, but I was part of a team for an indoor triathlon, way back in 2001. I did the bike part and it was on an old Schwinn Airdyne. I never went near an Airdyne again after that.

Lori-The new workouts sound really good! I got them downloaded and into iTunes. They look fun and challenging. It's currently 16 degrees here, but the windchill is -1.

Diane Sue-I hope you get your download code today.

Hi Everyone,
This morning I did X Train Cardio Leg Blast forv59 minutes and 322 calories burned. My average heart rate was 120 and maximum heart rate 146. I love this lower body workout!

Has anyone ever done The Melt Method or any type of foam roller? If so does it help with tight muscles and soreness?

Deb, so sorry that your friend is not doing well. Yes, I’m doing some of X Train while I wait for the new series. I was hoping that it was in today’s mail, but that didn’t happen.

Lori, thanks for the report on the new workouts that you’re doing. I can’t wait. My daughter gave me those Everlast training gloves that Cathe and crew are using. My hands perspire so much when I wear the regular boxing gloves.

Valerie, I prefer songs that I recognize too, but they aren’t used much anymore. The music industry has changed so much with the growth of streaming services that I think it’s harder and probably more expensive to use current songs. I like cinnamon rolls without icing too. I left some without icing when I made these. I will use parchment paper in my pans next time. I had to work hard on getting the rolls out of my older baking pan. One pan is a nice heavy USA pan and the other is a cheap one that is 30 years old. I really need to replace it.

Diane Sue, great workouts as usual. I feel like I need a good stretch. I will probably do yoga tomorrow.

Judy, I like going back to older and more basic workouts like Core Max. Trainers have to keep current and try to maintain interest which is good, but there are times when I just want the basics.

Have a wonderful afternoon.

Carolyn I have a foam roller. I bought one when I was doing rehab for a right leg issue where I wasn't activating quads and hams like I should. I used it for a few months but didn't really care for it. I then developed bursitis on that side from "hydrant" type moves ( part of the therapy) , as best as I can tell . I stopped doing some of the exercises and the roller because I got so sore I couldn't walk far. bursitis was not connected to the roller but the roller didn't reach the sore spot.
It is a deep tissue massage. I used it on my thigh mostly side & hamstring area. I bought one at a local shop for maybe $20. what I was shown was to lie on top of the roller, move myself back and forth using my body weight to apply pressure. It was unpleasant for me and if it helped anything, I'm not sure.

Levitation holds from core max. impossible!

that is a great thought on parchment paper. I think it would make it easier to get the rolls out of the pan since they have a tendency to stick .

I have staining and touch up to do and varnishing. The room/rooms are really coming along nicely. My husband has hung some of my paintings in the smaller loft area. The room is almost complete other than closet finishing. I want to get a nice book shelf for the loft area as sort of a reading area. I have a recliner there by the window with a pole lamp. I keep our wood file cabinet desk there as well. I will post some pictures when we are done. I need to bake something for my husband. I am running out of snacks. I bought him a bag of hazel nuts which he is munching on. Takes some work to crack them ;) They are a favorite for both of us during the holidays. I haven't ate any of them though.
My dvds came this afternoon. I doubt I will get my code till next week. I e-mailed and got the generalized we got your e-mail message.

Deb, I am sorry your friend is not doing well. I will keep her in my prayers. I hope that this is not a set back for her. I didn't know there was a long term heart work med. I mentioned the Nextguard and he informed me that was for fleas and ticks, which I already knew. I was just letting him know that made Gertie sick. I prefer the once a month stuff as some sort of long term, what I would call a toxin. I am never quite sure about all of this stuff, but am fearful after losing my other dog. I hope you hear some positive news on your friend. Get some rest.

Valerie, I used to try all sorts of healthy dessert recipes with less sugars and fats and the results were always disappointing. I would rather put the good stuff in them and eat less. At least it is enjoyable that way. We are at 20 degrees right now here. They are showing 17 for a high and 6 for a low on New Years Day. My husband went to Home Depot this morning and said the streets were slick near the store, but not where we are which is not that far. If we get the small chance of flurries it may be worse. I do not like the cold! I have never been able to do those levitation holds. I have tried using push up stands, dumbbells, different hand positions and all I can get is one foot off the floor. I don't know how Cathe manages to do these and extend her feet out in front of her :0 I can still feel them though even though I don't get my feet off the floor completely.

Lori, that is nice that you are able to customize your workouts. You are so good with the technology. I have not been willing to pay for on Demand just to get the workout blender though. Thanks for your thoughts on the new workouts. I am looking forward to them. They are a good length to be able to add barre and bounce workouts to :) LOL on Gigi. Gertie has done that. She brought me her tennis ball today. Actually, it is a tennis ball from inside another Kong toy that she finally relieved of it's casing. I need to replace this toy as it has been a favorite toss and retrieve toy. It often lands on my step bench and rebounder when I am working out with an expectant puppy face looking at me.

Judy, that Airdyne does not look very comfortable. I did not know they do indoor triathlons.

Carolyn, I am quite sore the last couple of days and know it hasn't helped that I have skipped my stretches and yoga lately to save on time. I have done foam roller workouts. I have one that I have had for years that is near an hour long. I am not wild about the mannerisms of the instructor though. He bothers me. My favorite was one that I had with Keli Roberts. It fell off a shelf and cracked and I never replaced it. It does help though. I have other workouts that uses it for small segments. I have a short one and a long one. The short one is one that has the bumpy things on it. I gave the smooth short one to my grandson that wrestles. Tony Horton uses one in his P90X2 workouts for warm ups and also the recovery workout which I should try to incorporate once in awhile as it is a combo of foam roller and yoga segments. I think it is almost an hour long. You have to be careful about rolling too far past mid back. I used to roll all the way down and up and found out that you should not roll the lower part of the spine. Also not too far up where you hit in the neck area. It is more finding the sore spots and staying in that position till the tightness releases. There is a bit of foam rolling in Tai Cheng from Beach Body as well. I think I am really liking the therapy balls from Yoga Tune up more than I liked the foam roller as they seem to get deeper into the area needing rolled. Also sometimes it is surrounding areas that need some rolling more than the area that is hurting the most. At least that is some of what I have found. I stood on a foam roller and rocked it back and forth while I dried my hair when I had PF and it really helped.
