Oldest Female Bodybuilder

Wow! How inspiring is that! & she was 56 when she started! I'm 56 now, so this is really encouraging for me & an inspiration to cling to when the going gets tough! Thanks for sharing this!

I want that to be me in 30 years!!! It is so encouraging...and so are all of you...my fellow exercisers!

I have thought for quite a while that the reason so many older people have so many health issues is that they don't exercise and lift weights (now that I am there or getting there) (notwithstanding unforeseeable tragedies like cancer and things like that that we cannot control)

I saw this video last night and agree that she is an inspriation. I think this goes to show that you are never too old to start most things and she looks at least 10 years younger. I think as long as you are staying active then you can continue to do anything for however long you want.

Although I knew who it was gonna be, I couldn't resist clicking the link. I LOVE seeing Ernestine, she is such an inspiration! Especially since my DH always comments on how "hot" she is  . Ever since we first saw her, I've always felt like I have no excuse for not staying in shape. (especially once I showed her to DH  ) I have to always keep her in mind when I look around at my own family, and see how SO many of them just give up after a certain age, and then spend the rest of their lives (sometimes 20+ yrs!) just expecting death "at any moment." I have 2 grandparents her age that have been doing nothing but sitting around (literally) for over the last decade, complaining about aches and pains, and saying how they probably won't be around much longer :( . It depresses all of us, and then when we look back on how long they've been saying it, we're like....ummmm you could've been enjoying the last 10-15 years w/us!

I mean, when it's our time to go, sure...it's our time. But, until then we need to live like we have forever, and we need to always remember the effect that "thinking old" has on us....

Thanks for the reminder! Now, let's go get 'em ladies!!!

Great post and so true! The mind is going to make our reality. I watched my grandparents disintegrate year after year in their easy chairs watching tv and complaining about their aches and pains and was told its what happens when you get old. My grandma would workout in her chair. She'd stretch her feet and lift them up and down, same with her arms, and that was good enough. She told me when I was a kid, that exercise wore the body down and hastened death. That *was* the mindset of the day though, god bless her.

Kikster, I hear you. My parents are doing the same thing and even my 47 yr old sister. You have to stay active.

I wonder if the idea that exercise wears the body down and causes early decline would be the result of an older generation that associates activity not with keeping fit but with manual labor. People with this idea might have seen a lot of their male relatives slogging away on farms and...I don't know...coal mines or something. If someone's working in that sort of environment and not getting proper nutrition and health care to boot, I'm sure they do go down hill rather quickly.

I really enjoyed seeing this video of Ernestine. I saw it a couple days ago, actually, and thought of posting it, but I was sure someone here would, lol. It's amazing that someone her age could look like that! I'm sure she regularly puts much younger women and men to shame! I love how working out is a legacy for her too, something she does to honor her sister's memory and the memory of their time together.

My grandparents used to say that a lot, about people that worked themselves to death. If you think about it, our lives are so much easier today in regard to physical labor. Most of us don't even open the garage door anymore. Laundry day wasn't babysitting a machine and cutting lawn was even more interesting. And today a desk job, is really a desk job!

I also knew who would be in this video and LOVE her beautiful spirit and spunk!! TOTALLY gonna be me 30 years from now also!! She is sooo amazing!!

I also have some girlfriends who are HUGE and in their 40's who have about 100 excuses per day as to why they "can't" workout. BS!!! Get off of your fat butt and MOVE girl!!!!

Ernestine definitely proves that there is NO excuse for taking care of your body and pushing the limits physically (in a healthy way, of course!).

Woooohoooo!

I, too, knew it was Earnestine before I opened the link. She inspires me so much b/c I'm 45 now and never plan to give up working out. I've often wondered how old I'll be when I do stop...... I'll be pushing for 80. hahahahaha I've also wondered when will I have to stop doing Cathe's workouts. I started running because I figure I should always be able to shuffle down the road or on the treadmill. Then, I picked up a Runner's World magazine and saw some 60 and 70 years old still running marathons. I thought wow, that could be me one day

She is soooo amazing! Wow! My students are constantly telling me to never quit teaching aerobics and I always tease them and tell them that I'll be 80 and still wearing spandex! I just may be!!!! Thanks for sharing Melagras....I've never seen her before!

Love seeing inspirational, fit and active folks over 70.

I spent last weekend at a Racewalking clinic, and one of the other participants was an 80-year-old dude who had started racewalking 15 years ago, lost 110 pounds, and often ends up winning his age division in races against runners. He also left quite a few of us 'youngsters' in the dust when we did time trials.
