New Runners Check-in for September 28, 2009

MStar: Get well soon! Take care of yourself and get lots of rest and fluids! That's an order from Dr. Tricia (Disclaimer: I'm not a real doctor, I only play one now and then!)

Hey guys,

I'm afraid I'm still a slug. Just no energy at all. I forced myself to do Lauren Brooks KB because I can feel my muscles turning to sludge with every breath. It did not go well. I have a headache and nearly threw up during the workout.

I think I am going back to bed. I hope you all have a fantastic day, and Tricia, thank you so much for showing us your beautiful face!

I did go for a nice little hike this afternoon. I've posted a couple of pics of the patient pups below. They see me break out the phone camera and are like, "here we go again!". My phone is FULL of pictures of the dogs. I don't think I'm going to lift this evening. My lower body is stiff from kb yesterday and hiking up the mountain and my upper body is feeling the yoga from this morning. I'll lift tomorrow (yes, this is how my lack-of-a-rotation goes!).

Morningstar~ STAY IN BED! I hope you get to feeling better. Its hard to take the time off we need sometimes.

Tricia~ I don't pretend to be an advanced yoga practitioner. I like the Namaste yoga program on FitTv and did a couple of them back to back this morning. I have to modify a lot since I'm not real limber myself and there are a lot of poses I can't do. I always feel better when I do it though.

Jane~ Thanks for all the info and steering me in the right direction.

Hi ladies,

I didn't do any workouts this weekend. Today I wanted to but house cleaning and pumpkin picking took presdence. It was a beautiful day here today. My nephew and Shelby had a great time at the farm.

I am hoping to start the October rotation this week. It looks great. I may have to rearrange Cathe's order of workouts to fit my schedule. I haven't done a rotation in while and I'm getting kind of itchy.

Morningstar, take some rest days and recoop. Your workouts will be there when you feel better. If your coming down with something maybe some rest will help it go away faster.

Irayburn your pups are so cute. Thanks for sharing.

Alisha have you made it home from Eureka yet? How are you doing?

Hope everyone else has had a great weekend. Back to the grind tomorrow. :(:(

Janis I wish I had an assembyline for dishes. I can just picture the scenario in my head and it has me laughing. :)

Any plans for swimming this week?

Tricia I love the pics from your vacation. You guys look like you were having an amazing time.

Hey everyone,

I'm afraid I'm going into cyber-seclusion for a week or so. I have a lot on my plate this week and I won't have much time for either workouts or posting. I hope everyone feels great, moves great, sweats great and smells great in my absence!

See you in half a fortnight!

Have a great week and don't worry about us! We'll be just fine . . . won't we, girls? {snicker, snort - scheming hand-wringing} ;)

long a@@ post

Alisha, are you off complex carbs, except for after exercise? If so, why?

MStar- I only eat carbs post workout so that I can absorb them. I have an endocrine disorder (PCO) which makes it a lot harder for me to absorb carbohydrate. That plus the fact that I love carbs and would eat like a whole box of corn flakes without any milk chaser, is why I keep it to post workout (most of the time.)

I’m insulin resistant. Cardio opens up my insulin receptors which makes it possible for me to absorb the food (carbs) that I have eaten.

Otherwise, the sugar stays in my blood stream along with the insulin. The insulin wrecks havoc on my body and is converted into testosterone which then activates my follicles into behaving like a male so I get cysts on my ovaries, facial hair, hair on my belly, fluffy eye brows, my skin becomes tough like a man, my body fat accumulates around the belly (think beer gut), I’m more prone to a heart attack (women with this condition have their first heart attacks at 40.) We also have infertility. I had endometriosis at 19. I also get dandruff like a guy. I get acne/cysts on my back like a guy. Btw, I’m not a guy. I don’t want to be a guy and the whole thing was distressing beyond belief. Facial hair? Yikes! I had laser hair removal, which hurt and was less effective than shaving. Also, the hair on the top of my head is very thin. Oh and interstitial cystitis which I had for 7 years as a teen and was truly the most unfun you could ever have. The doctors told me to “just relax.”

My gyn told me to try a low carbohydrate diet. That helps a lot. I try to focus my carbohydrate choices on high nutrient dense foods like fruits, vegetables, and nuts. Even eggs have carbohydrates (1 g per egg.) I love carbs, it was not easy shifting from a high carb/low fat mind set to a high fat/low carb mind set. But, I’m ok with it now. I tried doing “high protein’ and got a kidney stone, kidney/bladder infection. I focus my calories on fats.

This is what I do to deal with the PCO:
1. Cardio (unless injured) so I can eat! Yippee, eating! Also, helps with my anxiety/flash backs (childhood trauma)
2. High healthy fat diet- this does not illicit an insulin response, no insulin no hairy girl!
3. I avoid estrogens because excess estrogen is converted into testosterone. I loved soy, this was not easy. No more tempeh? Wth! I still use some soy sauce, but man, it sucked giving tofu up. Also, I avoid carrots and yams most of the time.
4. Birth control- regulates cycle, reduces endometriosis, and used to treat PCO. But it does induce insulin resistance, I’m not willing to give it up because the endometriosis was hell.
5. Supplements: evening primrose oil: helps with pain I used to get with weight loss, it felt like getting snapped with a rubber band. Can you say ouchie?
saw palmetto: testosterone blocker, low dosage helps with facial hair, feminizes my body, and makes for soft skin.
Horsetail: helps with the hair on the top of my head
Fish oil: just 2x a week, more than that and my blood pressure is too low and I black out upon standing.
White peony tea: feminizing, I just drink it.

Bilberry: cured (no kidding) my interstitial cystitis. I had bleeding in the lining of my bladder and that is what caused the pain. Bilberry treats small capillaries in the eyes and the bladder. My aunt Peggy suggested it and basically she saved my life. I was in so much pain, after 7 years I was ready to end it. I thought there was no hope and I said "bilberry won’t do anything. This is bogus!" Within 3 days my pain was diminished enough that I could sleep. Within 14 days it was gone. That is why I don’t give much creedence to most western doctors. As far as I can tell, anybody who tells you its all in your head is just not interested in practicing medicine anymore and should find a new job. Cranberry did not help at all btw.

Gymnema sylvestre: I only take this if I have had more carbohydrate than I should have, it blocks the absorption of sugars from the intestine and they say it will repair a non-functioning pancreas. I don't know if that is really true. I do know it can also drive your blood sugar down and does not help you lose weight so don't just take it for fun.

6. Yoga: seems to help with weight loss/anxiety

My real post, not the long a@@ post.

Lisa- I like coconut oil because its supposed to be good for the brain. Also, it seems to stoke my metabolism. I wish I knew how to ride, I would like to, but we my mom is allergic so I don’t want to run the risk of making her sick (she has lupus anyway.)

Its ok if you need the carbs and can absorb them, I just can’t very well. And besides, the fruits, vegetables, nuts, gf cereal, probio bar, and the kefir all have carbs in them.

Janis- I love the description of your dishwashing bonanza.

Tricia- don’t apologize, we loved reading about your trip. Seabiscuit is close to being finished.

Jane- hi :)

MStar- I hope you get some of that energy back soon. See you next week, read the post I left for you.

Jenn- I am home from Eureka. I am doing ok. The ankle is still iffy.

I'm doing an hour of yoga this morning, then its to work to video, and possibly get some techie reading done. I'm still a little tired. I'm trying some triphala for my IBS and so far it seems to be helping. I am able to eat. I just am looking forward to my ankle being better. I was ok on Friday but on Saturday I must have re-injured it because it swelled up and hurt. I don't know what happened, might have been in my sleep.

So, what kind of trouble can we get into while MStar is away? :D:p

Hi Everyone,

I'm taking a rest day today!

Lisa ~ your dogs are soooo cute!!

Morningstar ~ Hope you have a great week! We'll miss you! Hope you are feeling better.

Hi Alisha! :)

Hope everyone is having a great Monday!!

Its ok if you need the carbs and can absorb them, I just can’t very well. And besides, the fruits, vegetables, nuts, gf cereal, probio bar, and the kefir all have carbs in them.

Alisha~ That makes sense. Sorry if I asked a stupid question in retrospect:eek:. I have an opposite situation ~ I get a migraine headache and really b*tchy if I don't eat often enough or if I skip carbs. My friends refer to it as "hypoglycemic rage" and tend to tote little granola bars around just in case. The info about the coconut oil is interesting. I'm going to try using coconut milk in my coffee instead of creamer and go from there. I hope your ankle heals up soon.

Jenn and Jane~ The pups say thanks for the compliments.

Morningstar~ Enjoy your seclusion and get well too.

Everyone else~ Waves hi!

I don't know what I am going to get done workout-wise today. This cold is really kicking my butt today, I'm exhausted and achy. My hips and back are hurting and I don't know why.

Pip Squeak (the little blue dog) has an agility class tonight after work. If I'm feeling better we'll go for a little run first. Otherwise, I'm going to use my cold as an excuse to not run around in the cold rain and just go to class and then home and curl up on the couch.

Lisa

HI ladies! I hope you all had a great weekend. I am taking a week-long break from running so my achilles will heal. I kept giving it a day or two off, it would feel better, I run, it hurts, etc., etc. So I'm just going to give it what it needs. Still working out though. It's feeling better after just two days - I just need to resist the urge to run for a while longer.

Saturday I did Lalofit and LOVED it! Lalo is so good looking! Oh, and the workout was good too. :) Yesterday I did a Chalean Extreme workout.

Jane - My husband was born in Evanston. His mom still lives right on the border of Wilmette and Evanston. He had a lot of friends who went to New Trier HS. He went to Evanston Township HS. He still works in the Skokie/Niles area. He graduated high school in 1981. Hmm - I wonder if guys know some of the same people? Wouldn't that be funny!

Great pictures, Tricia. Thanks for sharing.

Lisa - are you feeling better? My interest in Yoga comes and goes. Lately I haven't been into it much.

Janis - I would have serious problems with a broken dishwasher. Is it fixed yet?

MStar - I hope you are feeling better. Remember it's the time in-between your workouts when your body improves!

Hi to everyone else!

Hi Everyone

had a great swim today.

I made my return to running plan and scheduled all my workouts until January. For January I think I will pick up Steve Cotter's dvd's and put Kettlebells on my gift wish list.

Tricia - I really love the halter top, I can't wear such luscious garments. How is re-entry going?

Syndey - how are you sweetheart? Kisses to you and baby.

Cindi - I just finished "No need for Speed", Morningstar recommended it, it is laugh out loud funny and imparts great running wisdom. I ordered Chi Running, which should come soon, and then I am going to read Bingham's co-written book "Running for Mortals". Rest that Achilles, ice, massage, I know you know the drill! Whatever you do, don't do what I did! And no, the dishwasher is down and out for the count for at least a couple of weeks....hat's tthe major disadvantage of being a country mouse.

Lisa - curling up on the couch with a puppy names Pipsqueak sounds like a great way to spend the evening!

Jenn - Hi, I guess you ditched the STS plan? Whatever works best for you, is the best plan. I was just thinking about USPS this morning, and how everyone dumps on it, but I am super impressed at how fast, efficient, reliable and trustworthy our postal system is compared to other countries. What is your position there? do you mind sharing??

Jane - did you tell me how big your neighbors pool is, do you know? I was just curious what 125 laps looked like. Also, if you don't mind, where do you draw most of your inspiration from when building your workouts and rotations. I love how you keep it lively, vigorous and interesting.

Alisha - {hugs} Boy oh boy, the body can be an hindrance and an obstacle. You have had a rough time of it. {hugs}

Morningstar - {smooches}

Lisa - I love the pics of your pups! It must be so nice to be able to take them along! Milo is good for a hike, but Peanut is more of a couch beagle! Curling up on the couch sounds like a good plan! You need to be careful not to get that nasty flu everyone is getting! Don't overstress your immune system!

Jenn - Sounds like you started your October out beautifully! I haven't been pumpkin pickin' in years!

Alisha - I couldn't imagine having to deal with all of that! We do need to misbehave a bit don't we? Gotta keep MStar on her toes!

Jane - Mondays are good days for a rest day! I can't do that because usually Saturday and Sunday turn out to be rest days for me!

Cindi - Ooooh! Yes, take care of that achilles injury!

Janis - Hello!!! Glad you had a good swim! I can't believe you can plan your workout schedule that far in advance! Usually, I'm lucky to plan for a week! As for the halter, that's the first time I've worn one in a very, very long time! I was pleased at how it looked! And, yes, those were skinny jeans! A size 4!!! I couldn't believe it when I tried them on! I thought I'd look like a popsicle, but they weren't bad! It's hard to see myself looking good because I've always had an inferiority complex!

I'm hating being cold! The re-entry is going okay. Of course, the work has piled up, but I should have myself dug out by the end of the week.

Me, I got in a 2 mile run tonight. Decided not to try to do too much my first day back! It went well, but it was chilly! I don't know how long I'll be able to run in the cold and it was only down to 63 today and sunny! Tomorrow will be my Cardio Coach day.

To everyone else in running-land - a fond good evening!

Hello all! Thought I'd check-in really quick since I can't remember the last time I did. Come to think of it, I can't remember the last time I got a work out in. = (

Busy end of week and weekend and now a sick kiddo. My 5 year old son has had a cough for a few days. I can't get him to sit or lay down long enough for him to get some good rest. Poor guy kept coughing last night in bed even after cough syrup and then was up at 6:30 this morning. My 7 month old's sleep has been wonky lately too so I'm one tired momma. Just thought I'd log on and say hello. I'll write more (hopefully) tomorrow.

Tana

Tana - Sorry to hear your son's sick! Hope he'll be better soon! Hang in there and don't worry about working out right now! Get him well, get some rest, then try to get going again! You need your energy elsewhere right now!

Good Morning Everyone!

I was up early and at work by 6:35am. What was I thinking? :p This afternoon I'm going for a 3 mile run.

Tana ~ Sorry to hear that your son is sick. I hope he gets better soon so you can some rest!

Cindi ~ Take care of your achilles. I had problems with mine a couple of years ago. I took a week off and that seemed to do the trick.

It's a small world, isn't? I lived about 5 blocks away from the Evanston line so I would have gone to Evanston Township H.S. I graduated in 1979 from Niles East H.S. in Skokie which closed down in 1980. It's been torn down but it's featured in the films Risky Business and Sixteen Candles. My sister lives in Wilmette.

Sydney ~ Thinking of you and sending {{{hugs}}}. Hope all is well.

Lisa ~ I hope you feel better today.

Janis ~ Wow...you have a workout plan through January. Good for you!! I have it in my head but never write it down.

I don't think I gave you the pool measurements. It's a standard backyard pool but I'll get over there this weekend and get a measurement for you.

Thanks for the positive comments on my workouts! I have many inspirations. First off, I really love to workout. I love how it makes me feel! I love being challenged and I love pushing myself, even if I don't succeed all the time (like the 1/2 marathon that I trained for and never did). I like tough workouts that push me to the limit. I also want to be fit and healthy. I'm not striving to be great at one thing, I want to be good at lots of different things. By good I mean strong, fit and healthy. I want to be able to run reasonably well, do push ups, swing kettlebell, lift heavy weights, etc. I also get my inspiration from other people. I read lots of inspiring stories all the time and that inspires to be keep moving. I love lots of variety too! One of my goals besides doing a 1/2 Mary is to start riding bikes and doing a dualthon.

Tricia ~ I hate running in the cold. It's a good thing I live in South Georgia!! :p It does get cold here though. I don't have a treadmill so it's outside or nothing. Last year I had to go out and buy a hat and thermal tights and stuff. I'm hoping this year isn't so cold.

You asked in an earlier post about beginner kettlebell advice. If you can "swing" it you should try to find a RKC (Russian Kettlebell Certified) trainer in your area for instruction. I attended a fitness boot camp where I first learned about kettlebells. If not, I would definitely recommend getting the Clinic dvd from AOS. If you can, sign up on the website because they are always having sales. Last year, they did a promo around Christmas where they had the 12 days of Christmas and each day they had something different on sale.

I have signed up for three upcoming 5K races ~ 10/17, 10/31 and 11/7.

Waving hello to Morningstar, Alicia and Jenn (and anyone else I missed)!!!

I was rambling and not very specific in my post, which happens at the end of a long day. :) I was wondering if you draw from Cathe's workouts, or Tabata, or Crossfit, or mixed martial arts, or some combination of all of the above when you devise your workouts? While I am at, how many years were you exercising before you needed less guidance to create your workouts?

Wow - congrats on your 5k participation in the next few weeks. They sound like a lot of fun. Speaking of fun, are they all fun runs or are some of them more serious, competitive races?

:D

I haven't been ill in years, literally years, but today I have runny eyes and nose, and a cough....insert your favorite expletive.... I wonder if I picked something up from the pool or off of a grocery cart.:mad:

Ok - this visual only works if we are talking about a two-stick Popsicle. Hey, better to look like a popsicle than an ice cream cone! Congrats on the size 4 skinny jeans!!!

Brrr....I hate being cold too! We came home from a trip once, it was winter here and summer where we had traveled...I wore my heavy faux fur lined leather bear of a coat for the entire month of February. All our family photos from that time, I look about as happy as a bear interrupted during hibernation. {laughing}

Hi Running friends,

I'm printing out my workout cards for disc 13 and 15. After 13 I am going to use the stationary bike and watch the rest of this Inversion swimming dvd. There is something about the book and the dvd that put me right to sleep. Subliminal messages, maybe? Hopefully pedaling away will keep my attention focused to the end.

I hope everyone has a stupendous day!

Hi all! Did some chalean Extreme yesterday. The achilles feels really good today - I'm tempted to run but I won't. I think the rest is working.

Janis - I have Running for Mortals and really like it. I like Bingham's attitude about running. I'll check out No Need for Speed. I just got the updated copy of Chi Running along with a little metronome and their marathon running guide. So I'm all ready! My marathon training officially begins Nov. 16th. That stinks about the Dishwasher but good thing you have some helpers!

Tricia - You look great! No reason for an inferiorty complex at all. When you run in the cold, do you warm up inside first? I heard that helps but haven't tried it myself. Last year we had a really mild fall so I was comfortable outside until into December. Then I would run on an indoor track or the treadmill. I won't run if it's icey - especially if it's dark.

Tana - hope your little one feels better soon.

Jane - what a small world! DH lived really close to the train on Isabella street. I remember that school. Did you know the house from Feris Bueller's day off is for sale? I heard the person buying it is considering tearing it down. Good luck on the 5ks!

Hi everyone else! It's cold and dreary here. But I have kung fu tonight so that should be fun.

LOL!!! Sometimes my mind works in weird way! :):) I mainly draw from Crossfit, Tabata, Mountain Athlete and sometimes Cathe. I started working out in 1999 but it wasn't until around 2005 (I started doing Cathe around that time as well) when my sister and I started going to the track and making up workouts incorporating running, bleacher runs, step ups, push ups, tricep dips and anything we could figure out to use at the track. We also went out to a soccer field and did the same thing - just made up random workouts. Then in 2006 I started going to a fitness boot camp where I learned about kettlebells, Tabata, and Crossfit. I paid attention to how they set up their workouts and circuits. I would often get home after class and write out the workouts for future use. I stopped going to boot camp in early 2008. A friend and I started working out at a local park 2 days a week. We both had kettlebells, jump rope and med balls. I went to the Crossfit website and browsed their affiliate pages for workout ideas. I would often modify or change the workout to fit the equipment we had. I also took Cathe's Boot Camp idea and turned it into a kettlebell workout. So that's what I do now although I don't workout with my friend anymore. I have a large backyard and can workout year round. I didn't start to run seriously until October of 2007.

Most of the races I do are competitive. The only time I see the word fun is usually when there is a mile race. The race on October 31 is a run/walk. I'm very competitive though so even if it's a fun run I'm thinking serious race.

I hope you feel better!!!
