New Runners Check-in for September 28, 2009

Hey ladies,
Just a quick post. I haven't managed to do kettlebells today, I'll try to do them tomorrow. My head still hurts and my head cold is getting worse. I did do my yoga though and ate pretty well despite baking a pumpkin roll for a friend (only ate a little bit of cream cheese frosting).

I'm dog sitting for a friend so my three dogs and his two have enjoyed hanging out on the couch with me most of the day.

I paid the bills and, unfortunately, getting the AOS Clinic dvd this month isn't going to happen :(. Being responsible sucks sometimes.

Alisha ~ you're hike sounds fabulous. I wish I had gotten out for a walk today but it didn't happen. Boredom is a real eating trigger for me too. I do better during the week than I do on the weekends just because I stay busy better. Are the Two Gomers on iTunes? If not, where can I find them?

I can't quite remember the difference between Pyramids on FitTV and the dvd but I LOVE the full body premix on the dvd. Hope you can get it.

Please elaborate on your stick horse issues for me! I am a horsenut of the nth degree. I had two guys to the house to install some new heaters and one of them took one look at my "spare bedroom" and said, "You must be in the horse industry!" Not quite, but I have all the toys :D.

Tana ~ I hate to think how many hours/days/weeks of my life facebook and internet boards have eaten!

Hi to Morningstar, Jane, Janis, Cindi, Jenn, and Sydney.

Good night,
Lisa

Okay ladies, I'm bumping this back up! I feel better this morning ~ still have a head cold but the migraine is under control. The sniffle and itty-bitty fever isn't a problem compared to the migraine.

So I did my kettlebell workout this morning (Providence) and felt good but a little wobbly so I just backed off on the weight a little bit. I used my 15# bell more and my 20# just for the lower body and big stuff - swings, squats, lunges, lats.

I really want another AOS workout, sniff! Has anyone tried the downloadable workouts? They are less pricey. I wonder if they have video or are just audio? Anyone know?

I'm going to try to do a little yoga and a walk with the pups this afternoon.

What's everyone else up to?

Lisa

Hi Everyone!

I have a busy day today. I woke up and did Firepower. I did it twice through with short rests. I really love this workout!!

Cindi ~ I was born and raised in the Chicago area. I was born in Evanston but grew up in Wilmette and Skokie.

Lisa ~ I'm sorry you couldn't get the Clinic. I haven't tried the AOS downloaded workouts. You can ask Deanie over at the Kettlebell Check-in. She does SIM and Resolution. She may know the answer. I'm not that technical yet. :p

I hope everyone has a great day!

Good Afternoon to All!

Well, I gave up trying to go back and catch up on everything and decided to just start here! Whew! Everyone has been so busy and active and you're all making me feel bad and guilty! I haven't been able to get back on track with my workouts/runs yet. I was going to go yesterday after work, but was still so tired! We came back on Wednesday and went right back to work the next day, so it's recovery time for us! I will definitely get back on track next week even if it kills me!

I thought I'd start out slowly with a 2 mile run, then a CC and throw in a circuit workout, then do another run, CC and another circuit. I really need to start getting some weight training in there! I looked at the AOS website for the kettlebell dvds. Yes, you guys are enabling me! Reading all of your posts about it, I think that might be my ticket into some good strength training when I don't feel like a full out weight workout. Any beginner's advice out there?

Anyway, it's raining steadily here, so I couldn't have gotten outdoors for a run anyway today. If I can get to the tv later, I might go ahead and do a circuit today, but I'm not too hopeful as we are heading out to Best Buy to pick up Halo OSDT for my DH! It may just be a reading day for me!

I hope everyone is doing well and is having nicer weather! I'm working on getting the trip pics up today, too!

Take care all!

Hola,

Today I had to work- pretty rare for a Saturday, but there it is. However, I did get in my longest run ever early this morning (I woke up at 3:30 and couldn't get back to sleep). All in all, I ran a total of 66 minutes, 8 intervals with 2 minute walking breaks and some hills thrown in. I covered 14km, including the warm up and cool down. To be honest, I think I overdid it, because I had a lot of owies by the time I finished and I'm kinda feeling sick again. Bloody hell.

I looked for a book on Chi running, but couldn't find one so ended up with Running for Dummies, written ten years ago. I went to Whole Foods, but spent less than $15, so I was clearly the very soul of restraint.

I've read all your posts, and can you just trust me that I responded in my head to each and every one of you? I want to go take a hot bath and then go to bed for a while. Sydney, I hope you're okay.

Ouch! That's a long run! I don't know whether to congratulate you or wag my finger in your face! ;) Get some more rest and take it a little easier tomorrow! I know you're going to work out anyway, so just not so much! We can't have you down for the count!

Okay, here are a few of our pics from our trip! This is batch 1. I picked my faves! Next post, batch 2 and that's it. Not too many. We're not photo hounds like my mother!

Oh Tricia, Your photos are fantastic! I loved seeing you and your hubby! You're so cute together! I love your halter top! {sexy, sexy}

I feel like I was right there with you. The one taken on the patio at Sterling includes such a nice view of the valley! I love the hot air balloon one too...where did you launch from? Aren't they HUGE! Was it totally amazing? If you launched on Tuesday, which I think is what you said, that day was so cloudy, cold and overcast compared to the other days, I am surprised they did launch. Isn't Chateau Montelena beautiful? And Vinter's Inn has such lovely landscaping.

I am so so so glad you posted your pics. Thank you!!!

Ok - I'll stop rambling and gushing.

kisses

Hi Fitness Friends

Mellow day today. It started too early with an 8:15 a.m. soccer game, which was preceded by team photos, so we had to be on the field at 7:30, which meant leaving our home at 7, which meant climbing out of my warm cozy bed at 6. Complain, complain, complain. I am usually up that early anyway, and it certainly wasn't as early as uber-early-Morningstar. Hey, girl, did you see the North Star this morning. So bright and beautiful.

After we came home I did some much needed yoga. All my sitting, resting my g**d*** ankle has made me creeky, cranky, and sore. (and I am gaining some weight too - not good!)

The team won, 4-0, they played really well today, they played their positions and had a well executed passing game.

Next week I start Meso 2, I am so ready to get some pump in the muscle. I am also going to try the stationary bike again - we'll see how my ankle responds to that, and of course more swimming.

Sorry to hear, Lisa, you are sick. I suppose the migraine was the first sign.

Alisha, loved reading your posts. You sly humorist, you!

Jane, how is your dad doing? I have to say, your workouts are inspiring. I hope to, at some point in my fitness journey, be able to execute my workouts without the help of dvd assistance. Hey, have you heard of a kettle beller named Steve Cotter?

My dishwasher broke today. With a family of five and me being an avid mess-maker, this is a major tragedy for me! {laughing}

Now I've gotta put dinner on the table.

Plans, I has them.

Lisa- The two gomers are on iTunes. The “half marathon” is the same as the “marathon” so don’t subscribe to both Podcasts, just ‘the marathon.”

The stick horse has a brown head and a brown stick for a body. I have painted it with acrylics, covered it in stickers and glitter. It’s a nautical theme because I’m calling him seabiscuit. I will take some pictures and post them on my blog when I’m done. Its for the charity called Saddle Pals.

Jane- How is it going?

Tricia- I don’t have any real good advice, but I will be there with you getting back into my workouts starting next week.

MStar- 14 k Wow!

Hi everybody else!

All I did today was go to work, shop at Frys, Winco, and Raley's. First it was a new battery for my video camera, then mung bean noodles at Winco, and finally fresh vegetables at Raley's. I also got some Kefir, pork shoulder, and Attune bars. I did paint on Seabiscuit (glittered stick horse.) I'm relaxing watching all the new tv shows on the tivo and planning my next week.

I did not workout today, however my (tentative) rotation for the next week is as follows:
Sunday: 3 mile hike
Monday: off
Tuesday: 4 DS Weights, Abs
Wednesday: 4 DS Step Premix
Thursday: 4 DS Weights, Abs
Friday:4 DS KB/BC premix
Saturday: yoga (easy) Gary Bromley

Planned eats:
Brkfast 1 c. green tea, hard boiled egg, veggies and dip, 1 tbsp. coconut oil
Snack: 1 oz. walnuts
Lunch: 1 c. veggies, 3 oz. protein, 1 tbsp. coconut oil
Snack: 1 c. fruit
Dinner: 2 c. veggies, 3 oz. protein, 1 tbsp. olive oil
Post cardio wo (whenever that might be) 1/2 c. gf cereal, coconut milk, probiotic bar.

I got a short run in the this afternoon - two miles with the pups. I was much faster than I thought I would be, must have been the caffeine from the Excedrin. I was okay while I was running but now I can't breath sitting or laying down. I may wind up spending the night propped in the corner of the couch.

I don't know what I'm going to do tomorrow. My climbing buddy is out of town which is just as well given the way I feel. I'll probably try to get a good hike and some yoga in. Other than that, it will likely be a lowkey day.

Alisha ~ I checked out Saddle Pals. The stick horses sound like a great fundraiser ~ can't wait to see the finished result. The stable I ride for is getting certified for equine therapy this winter. Do you ride? I will subscribe to the Two Gomers tonight, thanks for the recommendation.

Can you elaborate on the coconut oil? I just read the thread about putting coconut milk in your coffee. I may try that, I use nondairy creamer and it is full of crap but its my one real cheat and I love my coffee creamy.

Morningstar ~ Congrats on your run! I hope you didn't overdo it and relapse though. Take it easy tomorrow!

Tricia ~ your trip looks and sounds like lots of fun! Check out the kbs. They are so much fun that I can do them when I have no inclination to actually workout.

I love them but haven't been doing them long enough to give a whole lot of advice. There is a ton of information on the AOS website though including video tutorials for all sorts of moves. I started with a 10# bell and quickly moved up to a 15 and a 20.

Jane ~ thanks. I'll try asking over in the kb check in. The Newport mp3 is onsale for $12. If it's like to dvd but downloads right to the computer, I may go ahead and get it.

Janis ~ thanks for the sympathy. A migraine and a headcold always make me feel sorry for myself.

Hi and goodnight to everyone else.
Lisa

Alisha, are you off complex carbs, except for after exercise? If so, why? Compex carbs are an important source of nutrients and energy, especially for runners. Simple carbs are death in pretty wrapping, but complex carbs are very good for you, as long as they aren't overdone, like any other nutrient.

I did almost an hour of yoga this morning. It felt good despite that fact that I couldn't breath ~ which is, you know, not very zen :D. I'm not sure what I'm going to do this afternoon. I tivoed Slow and Heavy Legs and Shoulders which I haven't done before. I might do it or I might go for a walk or both. We'll see.

How is everyone else this morning?

Alisha ~ I can't go without carbs. I would be an evil, evil woman on your diet .

Lisa

Janis, make the dishwasher being broken a major tragedy for your sons, not you!

Oh, I did! {laughing} It was a dish washing assembly line that could rival the likes of Disney's, "Fantasia". Of course, there was lots of towel snapping, alpha-male battles, laughing, shouting, running, and dh becoming annoyed and leaving the room. All around good fun and no one lost an eye! Ds's girlfriend, who was doing the drying, was giggling/laughing the entire time, she asked me if it was always like this. Yep, pretty much.

I had yesterday's dishes plus the washed three times but failed load from the dishwasher to wash, that load was nasty! I'll spare you the caked-on-and factory-dried-cemented-food particles details- {chuckling} Surely there is a german word for this!

It ended up being a split-shift. When I was done with the dinner dishes and all the junk on the counters, I excused middle ds and his gf, and enlisted older ds and younger ds to help with the dishwasher load.

Where did dh go? Beats me, but he returned in time to make popcorn! Instantly forgiven.

I announced that until the dishwasher was fixed we were eating off of paper plates and no fancy meals. :D

I have to apologize for throwing our entire trip at all of you! We just don't get out much!

Anyway, to answer your questions, Janis, we launched out of Sonoma County Airport in Santa Rosa or somewhere right around there. It was only a short distance from Vintner's. We met super early (6:30 am - that's super early for me!) It wasn't bad that early in the morning, but it was chilly! We launched probably around 7:30-ish and were up for about an hour! The weather wasn't too bad and the burners kept us toasty! By the time we got back to the cafe for brunch, the wind had kicked up and our "pilot" told us if it had been like that earlier, we would have had to cancel!

It was amazing! I was surprised at how still and quiet it was up there!

We are just resting and hanging out this weekend. It's been raining and although the rain has stopped today, it's cloudy and just feels like a lazy movie day!

I can so relate to your dishwasher disaster! Mine died months ago, but I have yet to replace it. Luckily, it's just 2 of us, so the dish piles aren't that bad, usually. At least you have a crew you can enlist! I'm on my own!

Hi Alisha!

Your Seabiscuit sounds beautiful! I can't wait to see pics!

Lisa - I wish I could make myself do yoga! I'm so tight and inflexible that when I do try, it's either too painful or I can't get into 90% of the positions and I get frustrated. I'm better off with good stretching dvds.

After the holidays, I'll start looking into some kettelbells. Maybe start with the AOS clinic dvd.

Hellos to Jenn, Sydney, MStar and anyone else I have forgotten to mention!

Have a wonderful Sunday afternoon!

Hi Everyone!

Janis ~ Dad is doing great. My sisters and I take turns sleeping over at mom and dad's house and this is my week. Dad was great last night. I think we are finally figuring out how to handle him and in a sense we have surrendered. My life has changed in the last year and one on hand it sucks but I wouldn't do anything different. You just accept and move on. This has been a great learning experience for me. It's taught me patience, unconditional love and not judging people to name a few. Life goes on.

I have heard of Steve Cotter but haven't done any of this workouts.

Lisa ~ I'm glad Melissa helped you out at the kb check-in. You might check later as Deanie might have some more suggestions.

Tricia ~ Love the pictures! It looks like you had a great time!

Morningstar
~ Hope you are feeling better today. I totally agree about complex carbs. They give me great energy!

Today I did a 5 mile run and then came home and did Gym Style BSB and parts of Chest and Triceps.

Hope everyone has a great day!!

Hey guys,

I'm afraid I'm still a slug. Just no energy at all. I forced myself to do Lauren Brooks KB because I can feel my muscles turning to sludge with every breath. It did not go well. I have a headache and nearly threw up during the workout.

I think I am going back to bed. I hope you all have a fantastic day, and Tricia, thank you so much for showing us your beautiful face!
