New Runners Check-in for September 28, 2009

Hi Janis!

It wouldn't matter, it was raining here too today! And cold to boot! I bundled for my run this evening, but, although I was comfortable enough temp wise, my breathing was tight. I only made it 2 miles (partly because when I turned around at 1.5 miles, the wind was bad and right in my face, so I was having to fight to make any forward progress!). :(

I walked up the hill and started running again when I got to the top. All in all, I guess I ran about 2.5 out of my 3 miles. I hope I can adjust to the cold!

I'll be sending positive thoughts and energy your way that you get a good report at the ortho tomorrow!

Tana - I'm so sorry you can't seem to get everyone well all at once! I don't have children, but my friends have always complained about the same thing. It runs through the kids, then to the adults and sometimes back again! Hang in there and I agree with Janis, your rest is more important so you can keep your immune system strong.

Hi Alisha!

Yes, it's sad, no way to fit in out of season jokes right now! Bummer. LOL! I'm getting to go to Salem for my birthday! I've been wanting to go since moving here, but just never made it.

Let's see . . . had a busy weekend this past weekend and got to try Absinthe for the first time. No hallucinations, though. This coming weekend is the Head of the Charles on Saturday up in Boston and my DH's half marathon on Sunday. Next weekend we're going to Salem. Busy, busy!

Next month we're going to see Star Wars in Concert!!!!! (Sci-fi geek here!) I can't wait! It's actually coming to Providence, so we don't have to drive to Boston to see it. It's going to be AWESOME! It's a 100 piece orchestra and a 30 piece choir and the whole thing is narrated by Anthony Daniels (C3PO)!!! Can't wait!

Hi to Jenn, Jane, Lisa, Cindi, Sydney and Morningstar! Hope all is well!

Hi Lisa, Jane, Tricia, Cindi, Sydney, Jenn, Alisha

Today is STS disc 16, riding the stationary bike while watching some mindless t.v. and then yoga.

It is raining and very windy today. Yuck. I can't invite you, Tricia, to move to California, today that is. As a matter of fact, stay far, far away! {laughing}

Yesterday I went swimming, but it was not such a 'good' swim as my ipod stopped functioning. At the time I couldn't figure out what the problem was. It seems, now that I am not poolside, half blind with fogged up goggles, and shivering, that the ipod had not charged properly. Oh, I charged it...but it didn't hold the charge. Why? Beats me....(going with user error.) It makes me downright sad when I lose my tunes in the middle of a workout.

Tomorrow is orthopedic day. Please send all your positive vibes, energy, intentions, thoughts, and prayers, (no voodoo, please) that the doctor gives me the all clear to return to activity. Then I will get to bore you with my walking rotations, then walking/running rotations and soon (I hope) I'll be back to all running.

Hope everyone has a great day!

:D

Hi everyone..

Finally...I'm back at it. :D I did my 5 miles easy run yesterday @ 11:30 min/mile. It felt soooo good to be running again.
Today: I ran 2 miles: .5 warm-up; 1 mile @ 8:27 min/miles; .5 miles cool down. Then I spent 35 min on the elliptical trainer. I finished up with some upperbody work: pyramids up/down with 12lbs, 10lbs; and 8lbs.

Hope everyone is doing good tonight..

Good morning Janis, Jane, Tricia, Cindi, Sydney, Tana, Jenn, Alisha and Morningstar!

After 7 horseback rides in 5 days, two runs (2 miles and 3 miles), one long walk (4 miles of beachcombing) and LOTS of unclean eating, I'm headed home today. I'm going to try to get in one more run this morning and then its back to watching what I eat and hanging with Cathe. The "you can't outexercise a poor diet" is so true for me. I tend to eat pretty good food, just way too much of it.

My boyfriend gave me a nice compliment this morning ~ he said, "You're looking quite athletic lately". Of course, he is always very complimentary and never makes a negative comment when I gain a little but it was nice that he noticed the improvements.

Janis~Good luck with the ortho! Let us know how it went.

Tricia~ I know what you mean about the wind. It's not too cold here today but the wind is blowing 25 and gusting. I'm trying to figure out which direction to run so I'm not running straight into it. Out here on the OBX there is NOTHING to slow it down.

Okay, need to get packing. I hope everyone has a great day. Here's a pic from my fun ride the other day. It's a little off-kilter because I took it while riding. Those ears belong to my favorite little horse, Chip.

Good Morning Everyone!!

I'm planning to go running this afternoon if it isn't raining. There is a 80% chance of rain and I don't have a treadmill so I might be doing some other workout instead. Bummer!! I have a 5K race on Saturday and wanted to get a run in. I may have to run tomorrow but it's suppose to rain tomorrow too!

Janis ~ Sending you good vibes on your ortho appointment today!

Lisa ~ Thanks for sending the beautiful picture. I hear you about the eating. I've cut out sugar (except for cheat meals) since April and I've noticed a BIG difference in how I look.

Sydney ~ Glad you're back to running! Yay!!

Hi to the rest of the gang!!

Hi Everyone! Ran 2 miles after Kung Fu last night. I wasn't planning to run, but class wasn't very hard, so I wanted to add a little bit on.

Janis - Hope your appointment went well!

Lisa - that picture looks so relaxing. I love horses.

For running with the wind I try to run INTO the wind on my way out and have the wind at my back on the way home. That seems to work better for me. Another approach is to try to run with a sidewind as much as possible, or find a sheltered route. We have a nature path near my home that is covered with trees and that makes a big difference.

Have a great day everyone!

Hi Ladies... Hope that everyone is having a good night.

Today's workout: 6 mile run: 1 mile warm-up @ 13:00 min/mil; 4miles @ 11:13 min/mile; then 1 mile cool down. I really only got to .25 mile of the cooldown because i was totally beat!!! I did some pushups and a few streches; the for my abs rehab I did 3 "rollups". abs 'feel' like they are getting stronger, but I am no longer going on feeling :) Good night ladies.... until tomorrow..

Hi Everyone

Busy busy day, I just have a quick moment to let you know that I am (provisionally) cleared to resume running. 1 mile e.o.d this week, 2 miles e.o.d next week and so on. So, it is good news. He wants me to come back in 4 weeks.

I'll catch up on personals tomorrow. (Especially the little comment about trying Absinthe! {laughing})

It sounds like everyone got in some great runs or workouts or both!

:D

Ugh! Lost my post! Should have refreshed the page before I got started this morning!

Oh, well.

Good Morning!

It's good to hear so many are back to running! Janis - Congrats on the good news! Don't go crazy right away doing 10 miles! LOL!

Lisa - Great beach pic! Love the ears! Looks like you had the beach all to yourself! Nice!

Sydney - I know you feel better getting out there and running again!

It's a SS run for me tonight! Did CC Vol. 2 yesterday.

Typing with one hand s I can drink my coffee, soI'm gonna go for now!

Later!

That's great news, Janis!

3 easy miles yesterday - I'm working on my chirunning technique and it's going well. Achilles is doing really well so I'm going to try for a longer run this weekend and see how I feel.

Hi Everyone!

I did not get my run in yesterday due to the rain.:mad: So I did Insanity instead. I'm going to try to get a run in today even though they are forecasting some more rain. Please keep your fingers crossed. If it rains, I will do something else, but not sure what.

Janis ~ Yay!!! I'm so glad you got the go ahead to starting running again!

Sydney ~ Great run yesterday!!

Cindi ~ I'm glad you're achilles is feeling better.

Waving hello to the rest of the gang!!

Tana – I hope you and your children are feeling better. Getting enough rest is so much more important than getting a workout in. Crawling around on the floor is a great way to play with the kids and get some calories burned off. Morningstar has posted in several places great whole body, no equipment, circuit workouts you could fit in without having to schedule a set period of time for a dvd. Jane, “lioness”, could come up with something too. Some of the body weight exercise at Mountain Athlete could easily translate into something you could do while tending to the kids. It’s just a thought. I have been deep in the trenches too, please know that the intense period you are in now doesn’t last for long, and the work you are doing – caring for your children – is paramount to anything else.

Jenn – Hi, are you ? Haven’t heard from you this week. Are you still working on your one rep max tests ?

Cindi –. I am glad your Achilles is feeling better. Did you take your ChiRunning workshop with Danny Dreyer? I am on chapter three of his book. I am finally getting into the technique sections. {laughing} I guess I could do with out the warm fuzzies.

Lisa – Loved loved loved the pic of Chip on the beach. How many other horses were on the ride? Was the trip just you, your boyfriend and your horses, or were you with a group? Remind me sometime to tell you about my horseback riding accident! Needless to say I haven’t been back on – yet.
[He said, "You're looking quite athletic lately"] That is a great compliment! My goal is to look athletic and strong too. Way to go girl!

Jane – Too bad about the rain, we are having the same weather. Frustrating. Maybe a few cross training days before the 5k are a blessing in disguise. What’s the weather forecast for race day?

Tricia – ABSINTHE! You crazy girl….well….like you said, the hallucinogens seem to have been removed, or have they? The Star Wars concert sound amazing and fantastic and simply mind blowing…Are taking absinthe with you? (jus’ kiddin’) What are you birthday plans? As for running in the cold, I don’t have much advice to offer other than maybe those neoprene face masks skiers wear. It’s my ears that bother me when it’s cold, they actually throb, even when we go to the beach I have to wear ear plugs or put wads of cotton in them.

Syndey – Six miles – go girl!!!! The abs will tighten up, little by little, just keep doing the roll ins, and pay attention to your posture while sitting and standing, you know – keep the navel pulled in and pelvis tucked. I am impressed you can fit running, elliptical, abs, and weights work into your day while also having a baby at home.

And finally a shout out to Morningstar – who, if I am not mistaken, runs her very first 5k RACE this weekend. YAY! You can do it! Would love to be there in person with hugs, high fives and lots of bad jokes and even worse poetry.

As for me, I am heading out to the treadmill as soon as I post this to walk 10 minutes- run 5 minutes, and repeat once more for a total of 10 minutes of running, or one mile. Then it is onto Disc whatever - 18 -? STSMeso2 Back and Bi's. I love working back and bi's together so it should be fun. THEN I am going to do some yoga. I really am. Promise.

Have a wonderful day everyone!:D

Good morning ladies,
This morning its back to life and reality is overrated :p. I got up late but did get in Push/Pull before work and it felt good. I'm going to get in a nice run this afternoon in the rain - I'm thinking about 35 minutes of quick intervals to jazz me up for my 5K on Saturday. Since I've only been "training" since Sunday I don't have huge expectations but it should be fun. Tomorrow will be a light day exercise-wise.

Morningstar ~ GOOD LUCK in your 5K!!! Have fun!!!

Janis ~ That's great news!!! WOOT WOOT! Have fun on your run today.

The day that picture was taken it was just me and Chip and a friend on another horse. I had two "fun rides" this weekend and 5 rides with customers (between 6 and 8 customers, sometimes with another guide). Andy rides with me occasionally but not on a regular basis. I really love the days when its just me and Chip though. He's a great trail companion and a fabulous shelling partner - he just walks along with the reins looped over his neck and watches me pick stuff up.

I'd love to compare accident stories some day .

I broke out my little headband that covers my ears this weekend. I can't stand the wind blowing in my ears, gives me a headache, and it can really blow some days on the beach.

Tana ~ Hope you feel better soon! Getting into a routine that works for you is sooo important. Good luck finding the balance and system that works for you and your life. Some of the workouts posted here sound great!

Hi to Jane, Jenn, Tricia, Sydney, Alisha and Cindi!

Lisa

Hello Girls!

Janis and Lisa - I, too, have problems with my ears aching when it's windy! I've been running with my little cheap ear muff thingies since Monday! A long sleeve cotton t-shirt with my wicking short-sleeve shirt over, my yoga pants, a windbreaker (it's been pretty windy lately), and gloves! Oh, yeah, and my hat. I'm sure I look pretty ridiculous, but at least I'm not cold and my ears don't hurt!

Couldn't run today, nor does it look like I'll be doing any running through next Monday! We're scheduled for rain for 4 days! Yuck! Guess it's step and circuit with Cathe! We're also going to be rained out of going to the Head of the Charles tomorrow! Bummer.

DH is running in Newport on Sunday, so I'll have to dress really warm and bring an umbrella because they don't cancel these big runs for just a "little rain."

Janis - The Absinthe was good! Tasted like Sambucca (or black licorice if you've never had Sambucca). They prepped it just like it used to be made back in the day - with a little warm water and a sugar cube! Unfortunately, the bar only allowed one per customer. I would have liked another!

My DH has been looking at the Vibram shoes - he's discovered chi running! Completely without coercion or input from me! Now, he want's to get the "shoes," so we'll be doing that hopefully relatively soon! I'm so excited! They look really cool and the ones we want are actually cheaper than the running shoes I've been eyeing ($125). Maybe there's psychic energy enveloping me when all these new ideas go from the web page to my brain and it seeps over to him and enters his brain! That'd be cool! That would mean I'm definitely getting my Cathe downloads for my birthday! {fingers crossed}

Anyway, gotta run! Getting a strawberry banana smoothie in a minute! DH has been in the kitchen blending away!

Have a great night everyone!

Helloes to all our MIAs! Hope all is well with everyone!

we have a new thread

Hi,

I did try to start a new thread. Its called New Runners Check in for October.

See ya there (if you read this. . .)

Alisha

Hey everyone!

Okay, life has been a bit of a challenge lately, so my plan to return this past Monday kinda went south, but here I am, battered but not beaten.

Yep, my first race is this weekend. Maybe someday I will be a grizzled veteran of the races like Jane, but in the meantime I am very excited to be doing my first 5k (sorry, Jane, on rereading, that didn't come out quite right). Janis, I look forward to the bad poetry - it doesn't have to be in person to make me all emotional-like! Do you have your iPod back? (By the way, did I read that right? You're turning bi?)

Alisha, I guess an October check-in just isn't as interesting as a September check-in!

Tricia and Lisa, I have giant headphones, so they completely cover my ears and I don't need earmuffs. As a matter of fact, they almost completely cover my head, so they take care of the need for a hat too. And maybe a shirt. Hell, all I wear is my headphones and a stragically placed bottlecap.

Hey Lisa, good luck in your 5K too! I just hope to figure out which way to run!

Sydney, I've never given so much thought to someone else's stomach muscles - so glad to hear the abs are getting stronger.

Cindi, what's Power Fit?

Okay, off to nurse my DOMS and vanilla vodka - maybe one will help the other, no?

Hey everyone!

here I am, battered but not beaten.

That's the spirit. A gem cannot be polished without friction! Consider yourself buffed to a shine!

Janis, I look forward to the bad poetry - it doesn't have to be in person to make me all emotional-like! Do you have your iPod back?
I'm working on it for the virtual finish line!

The iPod, yes - I think so - I hope so. I think it was not charged properly. I'll give it a try in the morning.

(By the way, did I read that right? You're turning bi?)
{snort} yep. that's what I said.:D

Hell, all I wear is my headphones and a stragically placed bottlecap.
Only one! Oh My!

I just hope to figure out which way to run!

You're a smart girl, you'll figure it out. [Hint: follow the crowd]:D

Okay, off to nurse my DOMS and vanilla vodka - maybe one will help the other, no?

DOMS are going to help your vodka? Where exactly are your DOMS?

Good to hear from you Morningstar!

You've made MY day today! ROFL!

Yes, lots of luck (and hopefully sunshine) to both you and Lisa on your first 5Ks!!! I'll be cheering you on from my living room as it is going to be nasty here weather-wise and I will have nowhere fun to go! Yes, I'm whining about it, so deal! :(

Janis - Hey! I missed the announcement and had to go back and re-read your post! Congratulations on your change of orientation! ;) How are those bi's today anyway? LOL!

Hope the charging was the only problem with your new iPod! That has to suck! I can't stand it when I forget to charge mine and it dies right in the middle, or worse, at the beginning of my run/workout! I hate that! That's when I start having to sing to myself to keep me going! No, not out loud! Of course, that could be beneficial. It could scare everyone else away, so I have the path all to myself, hmmm . . . .

Alisha - Oops! I guess I missed the switchover! Must be the Ghost in the Machine! It doesn't want me to move to another thread!
