New Runners Check-in for September 28, 2009

Lisa:

I, too, am excited about the new digital format! 4-Day Split has been one I've been wanting, too, but has been too expensive! Now, I can buy it in pieces at more reasonable prices! I just looked at it and you're right! Each portion has a cardio and a weight segment. I would say then that probably Gym Style would be good. I don't have that one, but it looks like a good split! I have Slow & Heavy and I like it a lot!

Hi everyone

I'm VERY excited about the downloadable workouts. I like the DVDs but the down loads put a lot of things within a reasonable price range. I'm wondering what the best workout is for body part splits? Gym Style, Slow and Heavy, or something else? I have good full body and upper/lower splits but would like something that targets each body part a little more. I looked at 4-day Split but I wouldn't use any of the cardio/kick boxing/step portions.

Hi ladies - My achilles is doing OK! Ran 4 miles yesterday and 6 today. I took a walk break every mile to assess how it was feeling. Stretched afterwards and so far so good. I tried to focus on the ChiRunning technique and keep my ankles relaxed. It was cool here but not windy (around 40 degrees in the afternoon with a good deal of sun) so it was really great weather for a run.

The Chicago Marathon was today - when they started this morning it was in the 30's! BRRRR!!!! I was asked to volunteer with my local running club but the shift was 9 - 3 and I didn't want to give up my entire day. Far better weather then they had 2 years ago when it was near 90. That's Chicago weather for you!

I hope everyone had a great weekend. Kids are off from school tomorrow for Columbus day (even though their history teachers have made it clear that Columbus was a bad man - not someone to celebrate) so I won't be around. History seemed a lot simpler when I was growing up.

Cindi - So glad your achilles is healed! At least so far as you know! That's great!

30's!! I wouldn't be going out in that! Last year in October, my DH ran a relay marathon about this time of year and it was absolutely freezing! i did NOT get up to go with him that day! I'm always there, but it was just way too cold for me! It was in Newport and right on the water, so it was even colder! He agreed. When he got home he told me how bad it was, so I was glad I didn't go! There was nowhere to stay warm!

He's doing the same run this year (it's next Sunday) and I'm planning on going. He's only doing the half marathon, so it won't be so long or so cold as far as I can tell from the weather reports so far!

I understand what you mean about history. Of course, they're finding out more about our historical figures these days, but who really knows? It really was simpler when we were kids, wasn't it?

Anyway, obviously, by what time I'm posting this, we just got in from our friend's birthday celebration! Got to experience Absinthe for the first time. It was just like Sambucca or black licorice in flavor. I'm sure it's not nearly as addictive as it was back in it's heyday!

Night everyone!

Hi Jane!

I love Jacksonville! My Mom lives there. Wish it were hot here, or at least still warm! We have finally started dipping into NE fall temps - low 60s to upper 50s. We're trying not to turn the heat on for a while yet, too! I'd like to be able to manage at least until Thanksgiving, if not December before having to use it! I'm usually a whimp when it comes to the cold, but I'm going to try and be brave! If I were still in the South, it wouldn't be a problem!

Glad you had a wonderful day with your sisters! Have a good workout today!

We're off to Newport Vineyards soon!

It's been pretty quiet on the forum this weekend! I hope that's a sign of good things and fun times for everyone!

Tricia~

I love Jacksonville too! They have a great racing community and tons of cool races. There is a 10 miler on the 24th that is run in a cemetery. The course is lined with pumpkins and you get to take one home when the race is over.

We are still running the a/c here but by the weekend it is suppose to be a little cooler. I'm doing a race on Saturday morning and it will be in the low 50's! That's going to feel so good!!

Cindi~

I'm so glad your achilles is better! Yay!! I watched some of the Chicago Marathon on the computer. Yikes! My friend from high school ran it and finished in 4 hours. I think she may have qualified for Boston. She is uber fit and does Ironman Tris. She was on our high school track team and although she was a better runner than me (everyone was :)) she wasn't as fit as she is now.

Sounds like a really cool race and a lot of fun! Good luck on your run on Saturday! I'll be cheering for you!

Here's my workout for today.

Sweaty Balls - (does anyone remember the SNL Skit by the same name?)
Each exercise will be performed with a Medicine Ball. You must carry your med ball with you to each station and perform the given exercise with your med ball. Each station is 1 minute with a 15 sec travel interval. We will be doing 2 rounds.

Chest Press
Push Press
Walking Lunge
Lateral Jumps
Squats
High Step ups
Ball Slam
Sit ups
Broad Jump
50m Sprint

Tricia ~ Thanks for being my cheerleader! I need all the help I can get!! :)

Its Monday

Good morning everybody,

I spent the weekend organizing kitchen cupboards, the craft room, and my pantry. I am trying to be uber focused on appropriate eating. So far today, so good. I have a yoga dvd for this evening. Cathe downloads sound great, I like that I can buy separate workouts. I have 4-DS and I use the cardio premixes a lot.

Tricia- I’m Alisha Durbrow not Lisa. I wonder if FB is off somehow? Go figure. about 4-DS

Janis-Hi

Sydney- Do whatever feels right. Don’t worry about the personals, its just us being chatty cathletes.

Tana- I’m glad your son is feeling better.

Lisa- Eating lots is fine so long as its clean. I love crab bisque.

Cindi I am glad your Achilles is feeling better.

Jane- The weather has finally turned here. Its not in the 90s anymore.

Welcome back!

How was your week? Yes, I'm a big Schweddy Balls fan, too! That has to be the all-time greatest SNL skit! I still laugh my a** off every time I see it!

Ah yes, the Schweddy balls skit! Alec Baldwin is my absolute favourite SNL host of all time. I still love that skit.

Uh, just noticed how that sounded. You all know I'm ONLY talking about the SNL skit, right?

Good morning! I'm actually up before the kids and really should be working out. After my son got better, my daughter (7 months old) came down with a cough and I caught a head cold. DD is doing much better. No coughing last night at bed time and so far none this morning (she woke at 5:30, but is back asleep). I never know whether it would be better for me to get a light workout in or more sleep when I've got a cold. I feel like it's been months since I've worked out. = (

Lately I've been feeling so overwhelmed by everything else, that a workout is the last thing on my plate. I'm home all day, but after taking care of the baby, entertaining my 5 year old, laundry, groceries, bills, picking up, part-time work, family/friend activities...I'm beat. I really need to get myself organized and set aside an "appointment" with myself for relaxation/stress relief.

Okay, I think I have myself psyched up to do something. Maybe I'll put in Amy Bento's Kickbox Extreme. I did that one quite a bit when I was pregnant. Pretty fun!

I'll be back later. Tana

Morning All!

Typing one handed right now. Coffee in one hand, kitty in my lap!

I'm with MStar! Classics are my vote for best SNL!

Good Morning!

Well, that "Sweaty Ball" workout was no joke!! It was tons harder than I thought it would be. I think the Broad Jump with the ball was the worst and my 50m sprint could hardly be called a sprint!

Tonight I'm doing PUB because I didn't get to do that on Sunday.

Morningstar ~ Welcome back! Hope all is well.

Tana ~ I hope you have a great workout! I'm sorry you feel overwhelmed. I've been there but under different circumstances. {{{Hugs}}}.

Tricia ~ Good Morning.

Waves hello to Alisha, Lisa, Janis, Sydney, and Cindi. :) Hope I didn't miss anyone!

Have a great day!!

Sweaty Balls - too funny! I haven't watched SNL in years but I really did love Steve Martin.

Ran 3 miles then did 3 of Stephanie's Powerfit workouts (the three strength workouts other than core).

Remember Alec Baldwin playing the Scoutmaster to Adam Sandler's boy scout?

{laughing} still makes me squirm! eeeeeeeuuuuuuuwwwww.

Alec Baldwin and Steve Martin hosted so frequently, they really should be considered auxiliary cast members.

Who was your favorite host with less than five appearances?

Mine would have to be Mick Jagger.

Tana, trust me when I tell you I have been in the exact same circumstance, except the first two were closer in age. I would opt for taking a nap. More rest is more important, there will be plenty of time for exercise later on...but you need your strength and sanity every day!

Feel free to vent here, or PM me!
:D

Hi Lisa, Jane, Tricia, Cindi, Sydney, Jenn, Alisha

Today is STS disc 16, riding the stationary bike while watching some mindless t.v. and then yoga.

It is raining and very windy today. Yuck. I can't invite you, Tricia, to move to California, today that is. As a matter of fact, stay far, far away! {laughing}

Yesterday I went swimming, but it was not such a 'good' swim as my ipod stopped functioning. At the time I couldn't figure out what the problem was. It seems, now that I am not poolside, half blind with fogged up goggles, and shivering, that the ipod had not charged properly. Oh, I charged it...but it didn't hold the charge. Why? Beats me....(going with user error.) It makes me downright sad when I lose my tunes in the middle of a workout.

Tomorrow is orthopedic day. Please send all your positive vibes, energy, intentions, thoughts, and prayers, (no voodoo, please) that the doctor gives me the all clear to return to activity. Then I will get to bore you with my walking rotations, then walking/running rotations and soon (I hope) I'll be back to all running.

Hope everyone has a great day!

:D
