My Puppy :-)

Janie asked me about my puppy and I figured I'd start a whole new thread to share some pictures of him. . .

First off, he is wonderful. Best puppy in the world. Sweet, loving, super dooper mellow (I'm told this is normal for mastiffs). Likes to sleep . . . a lot! I started taking him for hour long morning walks about a month ago. We get up at 5 and hit the door. My goal has been to run with him, but he's fighting me on it :) For the last 4 days he has run partially on the way home but that's it. . . no worries. I have a treadmill if I really want to run.

He is a dream companion. . . one day last week it was about 94 degrees at 9:45 p.m. and I took him for a walk (we had walked at 5 a.m. that morning). I needed the walk to clear my head after some issues with my soon-to-be-ex. Trigger seemed to know that I needed to walk and he just padded along beside me without any complaint. We were gone for 45 minutes. The next morning though when I went to take him for a walk at 5 he walked out the front door and to the curb with me and then sat his butt down and pretty much refused to get up til I walked back to the front door. It made me laugh. I figured he was entitled after our late night walk.

Here are some pictures for you. He will be 4 months old tomorrow and I would guess he weighs about 45 pounds.

The third one down was taken on Saturday (8/1) so Trigger is almost 16 weeks, my son who is 6'2 is the only one capable of picking the puppy up anymore. . . soon he won't be able to either!!

The last one is a picture of one of Trigger's sisters at her new home with her big half brother Toby. I just thought it was the sweetest picture!

Awwwww! Very cute puppy. He is HUGE :D:D:D He is much bigger than my dogs and they are all growed up. What a beautiful dog!

You probably already know that already but I thought I mention it, puppies should not run long distances. Wait until the dog is 18 to 24 months old to begin distance training. Start with half a mile every other day. Increase the distance by 5 percent each week. Give the dog a day off for every day of running.

The puppy's bones are still soft and spongey. The stress on soft bones, underdeveloped muscles and immature ligaments can create damage–maybe life-long issues and high vet bills. I had to learn the hard way :eek: And it maybe why he is still fighting you when you try to run.

Awe how cute. He reminds me of Scooby Doo. I think dogs are so theraputic. They are absolutely adorable! I really, really, really, . . . . want a dog, . . I'm thinking border colie or german shepard. I work from home so I'm alone all day until the kids come home, . . but I still worry about the fact that they are a 15 year life long commitment and we don't own our own home, . . no back yard. :( Thanks so much for sharing those!

He is sooooo cute!!! What a big pup! He's gonna be a pony when he's all done growin'. Give him a hug and a smooch on the nose for me!

Nan

How adorable! I always wanted a Mastiff, but don't have the room for one! He just seems like such a wonderful and loving companion! Hopefully, he'll get to where he enjoys the walks/runs as much as you! Give him time, he's still very young! Keep the pictures coming! He'll be huge before long!

Thanks -- I always appreciate information like this. Please don't worry though, I am not trying to run him far, I know I have to wait for that. We are not really walking far either, it just takes a long time to get there. He's a sweetie and I don't want to hurt him.

Of course you don't want to hurt him. It sounds like you already knew anyway. I was quite a dummie with my first dog and took him running too far too fast :( I am sorry if I overstepped, I didn't mean to imply that you would hurt him.

What a Q T Pie ! ! !

He is going to be a wonderful companion - he won't talk back either ! Dogs are just so wonderful and loving.

Enjoy him while he is "small".

I remember my giant schnauzer when she was a few months old - loved to hug and in the mornings I'd pick her up with her back legs straddling my waist, her front paws draped over my shoulders and she'd lay her head next to mine. Precious. She still loves to hug, but at her nearly 13 years and 100 lbs she has to do it while we are sitting on the couch ! :p

How fun and exciting for you and your kids.
