Got my TIMESAVER DVD

Taking a step back because you are feeling panic from thinking about it is not denial, it's saving your sanity. If you're feeling that way, I don't think you have a choice but to take a ginormous step back and only do/think about things that make you feel happy. When/if you're feeling better and feeling ready, try to slowly step out of your shell and see if you can handle it.

The world is a scary place. Don't blame yourself for realizing that and getting freaked out. But it's also a wonderful place, and sometimes for our own sanity and survival we need to force ourselves to forget about the scary and focus on the wonderful.

People beat on FOX but the reality is that the others are just as biased, only in a different direction and have been for YEARS. Does anyone else remember Dan Rather actually editorializing DURING the news broadcast?! It seems to me that what's shocking to people is not that FOX is biased but that it's biased to the right. Been a long time since that's happened on American TV and it still startles people. The other news stations have been left-leaning since time began, so let's mention them too when we talk about skewing the news.

BTW I'm neither a conservative nor a liberal and I don't watch FOX. Or NBC/MSNBC. ABC either. CBS is appalling. Every now and then I put the Today show. I do enjoy George Stephanopolous on a Sunday morning. I've been known to listen to C-Span while I clean the house. Mostly I read and try not to reduce things to finger-pointing and blame.

Wow, what a thread. From Timesaver to Eggs. Technically, if one reads the true history of the United States of America, English would be our second language, Spainish the first. The Spainish were here a whooooole lot longer than the English. Hate to burst y'alls bubble. After the Spainish, were the Africans, some who came on the ship with Christopher Columbus. So yeah, Spainish and Africans were both in the United States longer than the English. We would have been speakin' many different languages. Think Miami.

Now back to Timesaver. That is a great workout!

BTW, speakin' of flags, tryin' being Black in the South with the Confederate Flag flyin' in front of the State House.....just a sayin'!

If I moved to another country I would adopt that country. I would definitly not drive around everyday waving the American flag everywhere I went. As some countries are anti american that could get me killed.

So, you'd give up your U.S. citizenship to just live in another country because there was work there for you? I wouldn't!

I thought this country was about freedom of expression, etc. - for everyone?

I do agree that if you move to another country and are spending a significant amount of time there, you should learn the language, no matter how old you are! I am trying to learn Chinese now, just because, and know a little bit of Spanish.

I dunno, Sparrow. Fox News seems, to me anyway, like THE most biased "news" reporting I've ever seen. I agree that all sources are biased, but IMO Fox is nothing but bias. And lately, they are really stirring up the extreme right base by contributing to all the mania about Obama not being a citizen and therefore not a legit pres (I mean, really!?). Also, Bill O'Reilly frequently referred to George Tiller (the abortion doctor who was assassinated recently) as a "baby killer"...makes you wonder if this contributed to the murder. Perhaps the other stations are biased, but I don't see them inciting hatred and criminal violence like Fox does. Also, I get soooo sick of the dopey dudes and the bimbo ladies. No one tries to look/sound smart and too many crazy/emotional/illocigal/false ideas presented. I do have to confess that I watch MSNBC. I love Keith Olbermann, and he does get pretty heated (though I think he stays reasonable). And I absolutely adore Rachel Maddow. She's smart, calm, and hilarious! She's just cool.

And netsnotes16, good points about language issues. If we go back far enough, the U.S. has had many many languages occupying it, and to me none of them are inferior or dangerous. The United States actually has no official language (surprising isn't it?). As a foreign language lover and a French teacher, I'm never upset by seeing evidence of other languages or cultures. I don't feel threatened by people displaying flags as a way to show their love of their culture (even if it's a different one than mine), but I despise flags being used as a symbol of hatred--like the confederate flag, the Nazi flag, etc.

To me, patriotism is a love of one's country and doesn't prevent one from loving other countries (and I do, very much!). I guess you could call me "polypatriotic". :)

Actually, I'll take it a step farther back and say that technically America's first languages were:

Abenaki | Acolapissa | Algonkin | Bayougoula | Beothuk | Catawba | Cherokee |
Chickasaw | Chitimacha | Comanche | Delaware | Erie | HoumaHuron | Illinois | Iroquois | Kickapoo | MahicanMascouten | MassachusettMattabesic | Menominee | Metoac | Miami | Micmac | Mohegan | Montagnais | Narragansett | Nauset] Neutrals | Niantic] Nipissing | Nipmuc | Ojibwe | Ottawa | Pennacook | Pequot | Pocumtuc | Potawatomi | Sauk and Fox | Shawnee | Susquehannock | Tionontati | Tsalagi | Wampanoag | Wappinger | Wenro | Winnebago

Hey Amy!

I haven't seen FOX in ages so it could admittedly be more extreme now. :) O'Reilly has always gotten on my nerves. Blow-hard.

It does bother me that there seems to be an "immediately dismiss the conservative source or point of view" trend on the boards lately (along with the trend of presenting any lefty nuts as harmless, avuncular do-gooders whose methods might be wacky but gosh-darn-it their hearts are in the right place.) Someone posts a thought or fact, someone else demands the source, person posts the source and immediately it's "oh well geez, that person/station/media/columnist is funded/run/supported/watched by conservatives and so clearly must be filed under "crackpot beliefs." And of course the information can't possibly be true or accurate on *any* level. The snide "oh, you must watch FOX news" and "Stop letting FOX brainwash you" remarks on this and many of the other political threads that have occurred are uncalled for, IMO. We all have our sources that others would consider questionable.

Sorry to go off. Just one girl's opinion.

Heh. I like it. :D

Also. On the flag thing, I see a lot of Irish flags in my area, and Polish. I think it's just a heritage thing. And having lived overseas myself I know that sometimes being in a different country can make you feel more attached to your homeland, simply because you're homesick and missing your culture. I was never more patriotic then when I was living overseas.

i agree. it would be nice if people would allow others to voice their opinion without trying to diminish them if it doesn't subscribe to their own point of view. i don't know why this is so hard for people to do on these boards. each side of the spectrum has it's valid points.

I totally agree, I would have started back with the Native Americans. Since this discussion started with the Eurpoean point of view I started with the Spainish. At one time, there were more Spainish Catholics in SC. Also data also refers to Muslims, especially from Africia, from plantation records.

I also have Native American blood, thus if truth be told, I would be speakin' alot of languages.

Love the Cartoon!
