Getting Our Licks In!

So I got up early on Thursday and I did Super Sets before my lunch and day trip to the Hot Springs which was a good thing because Friday I was unusually fatigued all day and so I took Friday off. I decided to listen to my body and rest. There are some seriously bad bugs going around here and Eliza had been sick earlier in the week. I think it was a good idea because I woke up today feeling good.

I did To The Max today. I find the 'solid' step portion of that workout the toughest! It just starts off so strong and I think my body needs a little more time to gear up before that! The tabattas and the Hitt part don't seem as tough to me as that first part! Its a tough workout! Glad it is done!

Janie it is amazing how our body holds on to emotions even without our minds knowing it! Yoga sounds nice!

Kathy: sounds like you are getting your steam back! Congratulations

Michelle: I love RS too! I had actually been referring to Rocking Party Step 2 not RS! I can't wait to do RS again as it is one of my favorites as well. I came across some old pictures of my old pup Sheba who died 7 years ago and I was hit with such a wave of missing her! They never really leave us our precious 4 legged companions!

Did HiiT 30/30 for 25 min. (I had a 5 min. phone call in the middle) and according to the Workout Manager I think my met was 6.5 so I burned 200 calories. Close enough for me.

Michelle, Great job on STS disc 7 yesterday. Congrats being in week 3. Wow you are doing very well. And for today's Rhythmic Step and making it through. I miss Ripken too. I loved his stories. Aww, thank you. I've been looking at Renee's photos and didn't realize you had a sister Sue. I was wondering about Renee and hoping she would come back to the forum. It would also be nice if Sue could join as well. What a happy looking family.

Laura, Great job on Thur. Super Sets and your rest day on Fri. So glad you are feeling better. Rest is so important when you are sick. Good for you. Great job on today's To The Max. Yep it is a challenging workout. Can't wait to do it. LOL

Take care ladies,

Janie

STS disc 8 today: back and triceps. Can't believe I'm almost through week three of meso 1. Time sure does fly by when you are doing STS.

Janie: Yes, I have an older sister, Sue. Renee is my younger sister--making me the middle child. Younger sister and I get along much better than older sister and I do. I would say that, at best, older sister and I tolerate each other. Renee lurks the forums which I sometimes forget like when I posted before Christmas that I was excited the Cathe calendars would arrive before Christmas. Sister read that and knew she was getting a calendar.

Laura: Party Rocking Step 2 is definitely a tough step workout. Much tougher that PRS1 and RS. I have to take breaks on PRS2 as well. To The Max is one of my favorites. I think it's one of Cathe's sneakier workouts. You think--this doesn't look too hard--and then the step part hits you right in the face. Happy you are staying healthy.

Hi to Kathy and Cindy and to sister if you are lurking.
Michelle

well I did After Burn today for the first time and I have to say it hurt me…..:(:mad::p…and not in the good way… my left rotator cuff has been bothering me so all those plank held exercise weren't good for that…and towards the end doing the lunge back kicks my right knee tweaked hard and in a very painful way:mad: and now my left sciatic is acting up and my left ankle is bothering me as well! Goodness I sound like an old lady and I sure do feel like one! I liked the workout but my body didn't….I have been picking up the pace a little and maybe I need to take it a little slower…slow and steady wins the race right? Sure don't want anything to become a major injury/set back.

Janie: Hiit 30/30 is a tough one! Great Job! Sure seems like you should burn more than 200 calories though! Sometimes when I am slaving away on some cardio equipment and the calories burned section says I have only burned like 150 calories I am like REALLY? thats it? thats like a big apple!!! LOL

Michelle: that's a cute story about the Cathe Calendar Spoiler! Yes STS is amazing! I have done 3 full cycles and many more individual work outs! I will be ready to get back to it after I have cycled through all my other Cathe DVD"S!

Saturday I did 4DS (chest/shoulders/triceps) premix. I love 4DS. Sunday was RPS #1 (combos 1-4). I tried hard to get combo #5. I just don't get it. Tried continuing on & then just sat & viewed #6. Oh boy I definitely don't think I'll get these 2 combos but I'll presevere & keep trying. Nex time I do this workout I'm going to start w/#5 & just keep rewinding until I get it. Tonight will be Lower Body from the Low Impact Series set.

That was some wicked weather we had Saturday night. Just stayed home & on Sunday went shopping. Had to spend some $$ that I rec'd for Xmas. :)

Michelle: You are breezing right through STS. Great job on your workouts. I too can't believe your almost finished w/Meso 1. Will you continue on w/M2? I used certain discs all the time that had the least amount of time. Their in Meso 2.

Laura: Oh no! This is just awful re your injuries. Please rest up & feel better soon. Misery loves company. I too had tweaked the left side of my leg during Rapid Fire 4. Had to do a front kick & then turn your body to the side & do a roundhouse kick. The leg is still hurting me but not as bad as last week. I'm sorry this happened to you.

Janie Sis: Great job on 30/30. I feel the same as Laura that you should've burned much more than 200 calories.

Waves to Cindy!

Take care,
Kathy

I use the Workout Manager for a gauge. During some exercises Cathe uses two risers and the met let say is 8 for 60 min. and lets say the calories burned is 600 or more. For me there is no way I could use two risers, instead, at this point in my exercising, I would only use the topper. So what I've done is minus 2 mets and it would be 6. The calories would go down a lot too. Also how long you do this exercise might only be 30 min. Again it will make the calorie burn a lot less. I don't know how they work the calories math wise but it would significantly change. Also If I'm feeling not quite up to Cathe's moves then I would again lower the met value by .50 or more. That would bring the calories burned even lower.

When I did Hiit-30/30 I only did it for 25 min. I was right along with Cathe a met value of 6.50. If I had did the full 30 min. the calories burned, according to the Workout Manager, would have been 240 instead of my 200.

I think I'm doing OK with my thinking, but please if it's faulty in any way let me know. There might be something I'm not considering. Especially if it would make a big difference. L:DL Whew! I guess I rely on this more than I thought.

Will come back later after I did my exercise for the day. See ya tonight.

Michelle, Great job on STS disc 8 back and triceps. Congratulations almost through week 3. You are doing so well.

Laura, Great job on Afterburn today. Oh NO! You are hurt. I so agree with you when getting back into exercising you must slow down. I have the same problem wanting instant gratification so badly to the point where it hurts or there is an injury. Do be careful, you'll get there. "...slow and steady wins the race." I think everyone should have that quote placed somewhere where they do their exercises. I learned that lesson so well with my own injuries. I'm motivated by your "go get um" attitude. Thank you for that.

Kathy Sis, Great job on 4DS chest/shoulders and triceps premix. I love this workout too! Also for doing RPS 1, 1-4. It's great that you tried hard on #5. You will get there in time. Along with #6. This is good. You don't want any workout easy. Persevere indeed, always. You are doing so well. Do stay warm and cozy and out of the way from storms. I LOVE spending Christmas money too! Enjoy.

Take care everyone,

Janie

Today was my rest day and I really did rest! I didn't do any walks or Pilates or yoga. My body was telling me that is what it needed! Feeling better today all my aches and pains have faded away. I watched some of Slide and Glide well because that seemed better than nothing! LOL maybe I am a Cathe addict!

Diet is not really happening yet. I have focused on two little changes so far. No drinking during and bringing my lunch. I start getting more serious tomorrow with using my Fitpal account to log my calories all week without changing anything yet. I want to get an accurate picture of where my calories are starting off. Than I will try the zig-zag high/low calorie days to keep my metabolism up while burning fat and maintaing muscle mass. I know that will be a slow way to go but I think I will try it….

Weather was nasty in the mountains, gale force winds and freezing cold temperatures!

Kathy: Yeah I love Kickboxing workouts but those kicks can be trouble
it is harder getting older, I find I need more time to warm up and cool down and honestly I am not very patient with the cool downs.

Janie: hmmm I get where you going with your thought process. The truth is that is just guess work though. Do you have a heart rate monitor? That would give you a better gauge if you really need to rely on calories in and calories out. It is all pretty inaccurate though and these are systems designed to give us an educated guess. But certainly I know from teaching classes and watching clients that two people in the same class doing the same workout will get to very different calorie burns. One might be nursing an injury and taking it easy, or they might not be as fit so there fore able to go as deep, jump as high or lift as heavy, one might just be distracted anotherr might be giving every exercise 150% effort, squatting as low as they can jumping as high as they can, pushing to their outer most limits. Clearly there 'burn' will be different.

Waves to Michelle and Cindy!

Today was Low Max step premix intervals 1 through 4. Actually went into the office today and caught up on some work (but I'm still behind). Tomorrow I'm back to Quantico.

Laura: I think that afterburn can be a deceiving workout. It looks so basic but it can pack a punch. In addition to slowing down a little, another option is to do the exercises with lower weight amounts. Better to get your form correct with a lower weight and then work up from there. And yes, you know my motto: slow and steady wins the race; plus I'd rather slow down or pull back a little than risk an injury.

Janie: in my three Cathe roadtrips, I've had various discussions with others about the calorie burn values on the Cathe calendar. The general opinion is that a person is better off with a fitness monitor to determine how many calories are burned in a workout. I don't have one but I got sister one for Christmas and she is loving it.

Kathy: I agree: the fifth combo on PRS1 is a challenge. I think it took me about 3 previews of that combo specifically and about 3 to 4 go throughs on the workout to get it down and I still mess up a little--usually because I lose my concentration and I'm getting tired. Wouldn't be fun though if it wasn't a challenge-right? Don't give up--you'll get.

Hi to Cindy. Hope all is well.
Michelle

Yesterday was a rest day. Last month I contacted an Art Group here in Shelton and left a message and today today they gave me a call to come join them in some weaving. So I did. It was so much fun! There was even some show and tell. Oh My, I have to tell ya, there are some fantastic artists here. There is even one that doesn't even know how good she it. Wow! High Step Circuit tonight. I pretty much kept up with Cathe until the last two exercises. Then I just kept going at my pace. After it was over I was spent! LOL I here ya on a heart monitor. Darn, I guess I better infest in one. Thank you for the information.

Laura, So glad you were able to have a rest day. And you are feeling better. I'm a Cathe addict too. LOL You are doing all the right things to start a calorie counting routine. I love the zig zag in take of calories. I do that all the time. It works. I think it's necessary to prepare as you are doing. Do be safe in those mountains and stay warm, safe and cozy.

Michelle, Great job on Low Max Step premix intervals 1-4. Awww you seem so busy and then having to go to Quantico tomorrow too.

Take care ladies,

Janie

Last night decided to do Lean Legs & Abs. I only did this workout 2x. I must say its deceptively easy until you finish it. My legs are killing me today. I'm thoroughly sick of this cough. I coughed through the entire workout & thought I was going to puck.

Tonight depending on this cough I may just do a low impact cardio. I really want to do Les Mills Kata 45 but it may have to wait.

I rec'd yesterday in the mail 10 Days to a Better Body by Cindy Whitmarsh. Well this better live up to its title with improving my body!!!! LOL That's all I can say. LOL I was surprised that inside was a 10 day meal plan. I think I'll try it next week.

Janie Sis: I never worry about how many calories I'm expelling with my workouts. I just do my best. You did a good job on 30/30 as well as High Step Circuit. Now your learning weaving? You have quite a bit in your area as far as crafts & artistry. I don't have that much where I live. I'm glad you enjoyed it. Are you still doodling? How's the piano lessons coming along?

Michelle: Good job on Low Max. There's one song in particular in that workout Kids in America that I just can't stand. I wish I could tune it out but I can't. I haven't done this workout in quite a while. Sorry your so busy. Hope things improve soon. That #5 combo in PRS #1 I can't seem to triple around the step fast enough. Cathe must be on speed when she does it. Are you supposed to be in back of the step when you mambo or in the front of the step? I'm confused. LOL Can you help? I got the step up kick pivot kick move perfectly.

Laura: Glad you rested & listened to your body. I tend not to do that. I used to zig/zag my calories. I purchased a book not too long ago re cycling carbs from high to low. I should consider doing this again.

Waves to Cindy!

Take care,
Kathy

I had posted last week and I don't see it, bummer! I've been an emotional wreck the past couple days, Lucas got ahold of the curling iron on Sun morning and burned his jaw line (I'm feeling major mommy guilt over this), a guy I grew up with passed away on Sunday, and Lily had a horrible day at school with a lot of disobeying so we're trying to figure that out. I have been emotional eating and exercise hasn't been happening. That is changing tonight!

Lily's cheer competition went great and she was on top of the world but it was a major sensory overload and a hard day for me being by myself with the two kids for most of the day. Dave and Brodie left right away for ski lessons, my parents left shortly after them and my in-laws left 45 min after my parents. It was hard holding Lucas for hours - my back and arms were aching by the time we left, I'm still sore in my arms and shoulders. I was surprised with how nervous I got before Lily went out, I didn't expect that! I was also pleased she landed her cartwheel perfectly :)

Kathy-Thank you so much for the recipe, it's looks delicious! I hope the 10 day meal plan works along with the DVD!

Janie - I think your figures on MET sound good, I've been wondering what I'm burning on the P90X3 workouts and probably should get my heart monitor out again.

Laura - So sorry Afterburn hurt you! Definitely slow and steady with that one. Have you tried Slide & Glide yet? I think baby steps with diet is the best approach, it isn't so overwhelming that way.

Michelle - Great job with STS! Are you aiming for any specific results with it?

Cindy

Tonight was 25-30 min. of the Wedding video. I had Yoga for today but wanted some cardio instead.

Kathy Sis, Great job on Lean Legs and Abs. Well done!. Hope you feel better soon. NOthing like a horrible cough. I'll have to look up Cindy Whitmarsh. At the art gathering, it was just talking and to keep our hands busy. It was child's play really. Didn't have to thing, just talked and got to know people. I am still doodling. I'm doing humming bird with musical notes tailing off behind it. Will take photos once I'm done. I'm still playing the piano, but I'm getting nowhere. Still play very slowly and not knowing yet musical notes by looking at it. The flash cards still haven't come. Darn!

Cindy, Awww, I don't like it either when posted and it doesn't show up. Hope Lucas feel better soon. I'm sorry for your loss. Lilly might be feeling your stress through the week. Or maybe something is happening at school. It's really hard when there is a lot of stress to sometimes even think about exercising. Glad to see you are making a change tonight and nipping it in the bud. Sounds like you are overworked. Lilly's seems to be doing fine with her cheer competition.

Take care everyone,

Janie

I feel back to normal and that's a good feeling. Last night we did Agility X and I have to watch my knee with it but it was nice to get active again. Tonight I'll move onto the second week of workouts and I plan to do a double workout tomorrow. Lucas came down with a 103 temp so Dave is home with him today and I'll be home with him tomorrow - that will at least give me some time (if he naps) to get an extra workout in and the house cleaned.

Janie - Great job with the cardio - I have days where what I have planned just isn't jiving :) I think Lily has been struggling with a little boy in the class saying things to hurt her, yesterday she was able to ignore him and did really well so hopefully her teacher can keep an eye on it and I can remind her to not let his words have power. That's a hard thing to do even as adults.

Cindy

Yesterday I did LIS Trisets Upper Body. I thought I had done it but I hadn't. I had to modify a lot with my rotator cuff. I love the LIS series but it is very High Impact on the shoulders with all the plank work on the gliders and all the pushups. This series came out in the middle of my marriage falling apart so there are actually quite a few DVD"s that I never did. I tended to do the ones I liked a lot which were Turbo Barre (one of my top 5 Cathe dvd's), The Step routine, the two Yoga Dvd's.

Yesterday I also did a Pilates Mat class and a Reformer class at the YMCA (my mom got me a membership) just to check it out and see what they did there. The classes are free for members and I can tell you that I can see why they are free. I was not impressed at all. I didn't tell the teacher that I taught Pilates. She hardly gave any corrections. She had people doing advanced exercises who had clearly not mastered the basics and could possibly injure themselves. And in the equipment class she had the headrest position in the wrong place for two exercise which is extremely dangerous and could cause cervical sprain or worse. So ya'll should be aware that there is Pilates and then there is PILATES out there and you should choose very wisely. This girls was trained at a highly regarded school. But I was not impressed.

Today I did Slide & Glide which I LOVED! Well I loved the cardio and the low impact felt great for my body. I wasn't a huge fan of the conditioning sections. I prefer a solid Dumbbell workout, and the core was TOUGH!

TOnight I am going out for a date and some Blues music! I bought a new red leather coat at Macy's last night for 60% off that I am going to wear. I had a facial ( I am doing a trade for facial for Pilates:D) and now I am off to get my crown done for that gosh awful root canal!

Read personals but I have to dash

Tonight was Upper and Lower body workouts and Stability Abs.

Cindy
, So glad you are feeling yourself. Great job on Agility X. Good to take notice of a sore knee. Poo Lucas, hope he feels better soon. Yes it is hard to ignore bullies, but I think you told her well how to handle it as best she can. You are such a good mom.

Laura, Great job on LIS Trisets Upper Body. Wow this exercise would be hard on the rotator cuff. You did the best you could, and that's all that matters. How cool to have DVD's you haven't done yet. Nice incentive. Great job on the Pilates Mat class and a Reformer class. Too bad they are not up to speed. Hope no one gets hurt the way it is being taught. Great job on today's Slide & Glide. You did good. Oh how fun! Enjoy the date and Blues music. Nice job on the 60% off on your leather red coat. Sounds wonderful to have. Love it when people treat themselves to facials, or the spa. Well at least after your done with the crown, you won't have to worry about any longer. Glad to see you are taking care of it. Enjoy your date. I want details. LOL

Take care ladies,

Janie

I was home sick yesterday. Tuesday night I did X10 Fat Burning Circuit. I really liked this workout. I was coughing yes again. Afterwards I had toe cramps & charlie horses. Not good. I'm thinking I may be lacking in iron or Vitamin A. I'll have to take off from work to have blood work done to find out. My toe cramps happen a lot. I didn't sleep well Tues. night. Fell out at 3 AM. No way could I function at my job w/such little sleep. I've been taking Mucsinex & I think its keeping me up at night.

Tonight will try doing 4DS (back/biceps) with only moderate weights.

Cindy: I'm glad your feeling better & great job on AgilityX. How's Lucas today? Glad your on top of the bully in Lily's class. I remember my DS had one & his teacher took care of it immediately. But w/my DS it was physical not verbal. Its a serious matter but Lily's doing the right thing by not antagnonizing the boy by acknowledging him.

Laura: You should watch that rotator cuff of yours. I hope you didn't aggravate it further w/that workout. I should take my own advice shouldn't I? LOL I too like Slide N Glide. Your new red leather coat sounds lovely & at 60% off no less & a facial besides. Yipee! Have fun on your date. Janie & I both want details. :) The Pilates instructor doesn't sound as if she should be teaching at all from the way you described the class. I sure hope someone doesn't get seriously injured. That's awful.

Janie Sis: I wonder what the hold up is on your flash cards. Its been quite a while since you ordered them. Can you email customer service? I can't wait to view your new doodling project. I know it will be beautiful. Great job on your total body & abs workout.

Waves to Michelle!

Kathy

I did the P90X3 Isometrics last night - I did better than last week so that was nice- and then got up this morning and did Dynamix (kind of a stretch workout). I had to do some work from home today and now that that's done and Lucas is napping I should start cleaning. We are going to walk to pick the big kids up from school (30 min walk total) and tonight I'm doing Accelerator. Hopefully I'll be at work tomorrow, Lucas hit 103.9 at 3am but woke in a great mood at 8 and didn't have a fever this morning. Fingers crossed!

Laura - It would have been so hard to not say anything, glad you know better and a good reminder not everyone teaches the proper safety necessary with exercise. I enjoy slide & glide too, some moves really hit areas that normally don't get it.

Janie - Great workout! Bullies are rough to maneuver our kids through but they have to learn to deal with it at some point.

Kathy - Boo on the coughing still! I'm so impressed you still power through the workouts. At least your abs are getting an extra workout ;)

Cindy

Did Yoga Foundation and got a little closer doing the plow. Have to let my body naturally do it on it's own. Can't force it.

Wanted to share with you what I bought and how it's working for me. I bought this mat a week or so ago and I have not had insomnia or a backache since. Right now it's a love hate relationship but I'll get use to it the more I use it. Just thought you might be interested.

Kathy Sis, Great job on Tues. X10 Fat Burning Circuit. I'm sorry you are still sick. Hope you feel better soon. Have you sees a doctor? I certainly hope you start feeling better soon. I made myself some flash cards. Now I can start memorizing the notes and where they go on the piano. At least until the real flash cards come in the mail. Been doing some doodling today on my bird. It's looking the way I want so far.

Cindy, Great job on P90X3 Isometrics last night. Yea! Congrats on doing it better. Also for doing this morning Dynamix. I bet that felt good. And for the cleanmax. LOL It need to be done. So glad there is no more fever in Lucas. Fingers crossed that it stays that way. Whew! Enjoy the walk picking up the kids.

Take care everyone,

Janie

Hi everyone. My two weeks of meetings at Quantico ended today. Back to the normal work routine--if I can just figure out what day it is...LOL! Yesterday ended up being my rest day and today was yoga max. Tomorrow I start the fourth week of STS meso 1.

Cindy: You have had one tough week. I've said it before and I'll say it again: I don't know how you and Laura manage all the mom stuff and the work stuff. I guess you just learn to roll with it. I hope the week ends on a high note for everyone. You asked if I had a particular goal in mind for STS: usually I just hope to lift a little heavier by the end of the program than the last time I did STS.

Laura: I'm a huge fan of slide and glide. Folks either seem to like it or not. I'm definitely in the "like it" club. And I feel like Cathe is doing alot more shoulder work in the low impact series and XTRAIN for sure. Or maybe I just hate shoulder work? Could be a little of both. The one good thing about that Pilates class that you took and did not like: you don't have to go back.

Janie: I was eyeing the wedding video last weekend. Might have to do that one on Saturday--I think that' one of Cathe's workouts that sneaks up on you. You are doing great with your gradual approach to exercising.

Kathy: double boo here on the repeat sickness this week. I've done the X10 fat burning circuit once; it's a goodie. Have you done more than one X10 in one workout setting?

Michelle

Last night I did 4DS (back/biceps) & NO COUGHING!! I took a Mucinex before my workout b/c when I got home from work I was coughing so much it was ridiculous. I swear this post nasal drip is going to be the death of me. Had a good workout.

Tomorrow I'll start the new dvd I rec'd recently. Its called 10 Days to a Better Body & I'll be doing the meal plan too. That was a nice surprise when I opened up the case.

Michelle: Good job on Yoga Max. Cathe holds the poses way too long for my taste. Glad your finally back to your normal routine. I know how that can be when I have to work very late at night due to deadlines. It throws my family all off. I haven't done more than one section of X10 but when this cough goes completely away, I'll try doing 2 or 3 of them back to back. I've already completed all 5 of the Tabatas in a row but I'm not sure about X10. I think its tougher than Tabatacise.

Janie Sis: I've heard of the nail mat. I could sure it for my insomnia. It must take some getting used to w/all those 8,000 spikes. I'm curious about it now. I did see the doctor & b/c I'm not infected all that much there's not much the doctor can do for sinus infections. I'm infected but only slightly. I usually get this cough every winter & it doesn't go away until spring. My poor family has to listen to me. The Mucinex is helping though.

Cindy: Great job on doing P90X3. Your doing great with these workouts as their not easy. Glad Lucas is much better & the fever finally broke. How has Lily been in school? Is the bully still bothering her? I hope not. Enjoy your walk.

Hope everyone enjoys the nice, long weekend!
Kathy
