What's up with flip flops?

I noticed this trend when I was living in London. Even in such a fashion-conscious city, there were flip flops everywhere. At my favorite store there (Accessorize) they had nothing but flip flops in their shoe section come summertime. At least they had a lot of cute glitzy pairs. I only gave in and wore them when I was heavily pregnant and my swollen feet wouldn't fit in anything else. But I don't have very pretty feet so I am really sparing the rest of the world.

At least I saw no one in crocs in London until my best friend showed up for a visit. That's another trend I can't get behind (though like I said one of my favorite people wears them).

Waaaaaay back in the day - we're talking late 1970's here and I was a kid living in Coronado in sunny southern California a cool kid would not be caught dead in "flip-flops".

The only cool sandal to wear was the "beach comber" which was essentially a glorified flip flop with nylon straps to go over your foot and between the toes and they were built up a little bit so that they were really kinda platform shoes with pretty color layers.

I had a blue pair that I kept forever. I loved them especially because, although they did make the annoying noise, it was somehow more sophisticated than the disdained "flip-flop".

Very funny. Myself, today, picked up a pair of purple all-terrain sandals with the thing that covers the toe and they were on super-duper sale so I am in shoe heaven for the moment! :p
