I feel better!

Yup, those are the type of flip-flops I am referring to when I say the nicer ones with the wedge or platform heel. I LOVE that look!:)

Wait a minute, ladies. Merrell and Clarks and Teva are NOT what I'm talking about here. Those shoes were meant to be walked in, and no doubt have orthopedic footbeds. I'm talking about those flat as a board things that you buy in the drugstore for $3.99, or at least that's what they look like.

Personally, I haven't seen anyone wear them in an office, just TO the office, which is fine I guess (although they look appalling with most office wear.) If I saw anyone wear them AT work, that would definitely be a WHOLE NOTHER thread! :p

BTW, I'm not saying I disapprove, I just don't get the appeal.

<Yes, I understand that they change their shoes when they get to work>
Really? They don't here and I am in a corporate setting. The new trend is wearing business attire with flip flops and quite frankly, I think it's sloppy and inappropriate. I wouldn't even wear flip flops to a bar let alone work. I do think nice dress sandals would be appropriate for work but I don't think they make particularly good walking shoes.

I LOVE flip flops as well. When I'm not at work, I'm in flip flops -- or no shoes. I wear them day, night, summer, winter, any chance I get! My favs are my new Nike ones -- so comfy!

I agree that they are not appropriate for work. I work in a relatively casual office -- dressy slacks and a nice shirt, and I wear ballet slippers most every day (which rival flip flops in terms of comfort, IMHO). I would never dream of wearing flip flops to work. However, one of my coworkers has a white pair with a heel and a little flower and I think they are cute. I wouldn't want my clients looking at my feet though.

I am sure all of you would have heart attacks if you came here to San Diego!!!! There is a lot of beach going and surfing, flip flops are always flying off the store shelves. No, I don't wear them all the time, but when I do, (no harm intended ) I don't care what other people think!!! :)

I love flip flops. I wear them all the time, being a SAHM. Obviously I wouldn't wear them at work or other occasions. They are just super comfy. It really isn't about the support...I'm sure people are aware they aren't made for that. It's just summer fun & keeps the feet cool. Oh yeah, I most certainly do walk around NYC in them. Sue me ;) That's all I have to say on that :p

Oh, Beavs! No way!

I'm with you Nancy. I hate them, never wear them. As you say, they provide no support, no comfort and zero style. Fine for the poolside or beach, but that's it.

Ignore this trend, it will go away, soon. To be replaced with some other craziness, right?!?!

Actually, I am quite fond of the current trend where the youngsters wear their pants just below their arse cheeks. Very flattering and keeps the tookass cool!

I agree that flip flops don't look appropriate with business attire, but sneakers look odd, too. Regardless, I do understand why city commuters wear whatever feels comfortable to them.

Respectfully, flip flops are not a trend; they've been around forever, and I expect that they are not going anywhere anytime soon.

Loosen up, folks! :) To each her own is right.

I agree that flip-flops have been around forever but not like this. I may be showing my age here(early thirties) and my location(east coast) but it only a very recent phenomenon to see people wearing flip flops EVERYWHERE. When I was growing up, high school, college..no one ever wore them anywhere except the pool or the beach. So, in that sense, I agree it seems like a trend. Although, I'm not sure about it ending now that it seems they've broken the workplace barrier.:)

Pippa,
I guess I just see them being worn casually as they have traditionally been worn. I am generally not seeing people wear them with suits. (One exception: there is one teacher at my school who wore a pantsuit with flops on back-to-school night, but that is NOT the norm thankfully.)

Pippa is quite right. "Beach thongs" have been around since I was a kid, but it was nothing like this until very recently. It's a fad which will no doubt burn out quickly.

Apparently not in Georgia (at least I think it was Georgia) where a public official is trying make wearing one's drawers past their butt illegal. While I agree with looks rather stupid I am appalled that someone feels compelled to waste their time quite literally being the fashion police.

They tried that in VA too. I'm pretty sure it didn't work. My theory: b/c most cops want to see as much female skin as possible (no offense to any of our fine men & women in blue out there;-) ). I mean really, who exactly will enforce that law?

I had a group interview recently for a new RN job. I was definitely the oldest person there. There were 4 women and 1 young man. I wore business casual but 2 of the young women did not - I was shocked. Yep, flip flops with their toe rings showing. Guess I'm an old fogie. But I did get an offer (they probably did too!)

I have a pair of Addidas that I wear constantly. I mean every day. Of course I am a SAHM and I don't wear them with dressy stuff. They are very comfy. In fact when I was dealing with PF, they were the only shoes that didn't hurt my feet.

Here in Hawaii, flip flops are called slippers. Everyone wears slippers here. It's not only the fact that we live on the beach, but slippers have cultural roots. A large segment of the population here are of Japanese ancestory. As a custom, we don't wear shoes in the house here and you would NEVER go into someone else's home with shoes on. Therefore, we take our slippers on and off all day. Flip flops fit our lifestyle.
That being said, we don't wear them to the office. I do not see people in the business district of Honolulu, walking to their offices with slippers on; it's not appropriate. I can't imagine wearing flip flops on the streets of NYC, just from a sanitary standpoint.
