What is Meant By "It Didn't Used to Be This Way..."

Just an opinion to offer, but it seems to me that some of the members here are extremely stuck in the way things "used to be" or the way that "things always were". Like life, things change. People change, growth occurs. With more forum readers/members and posters, more opinions are thrown out and sometimes the pot may be stirred more than they "used to be".

As someone who has been a reader on these forums for years, it always interests me when the more "seasoned" forum members take it upon themselves to snuff out anything that they do not DEEM worthy or interesting or relevant.

It reminds me of high school all over again. You have your "cool" crowd and everyone is trying to fit in with them. This cool crowd can sometimes make the rest of the bunch feel inferior or irrelevant. That is what I seem to see lately.

Also, we are all adults here. Who is one to tell another to make sure you edit your posts? Or, make sure you use the most proper grammer and punctuation? Are those that may not have excelled in English class that much more inferior? I just think that sometimes the tone in which these posts are written can be extremely...for lack of a better term...condescending.

Cathe is an amazing instructor, has produced an equally amazing product and yes...by offering a forum where anyone can post it will likely turn into a debate at times. But that doesn't mean that we cannot have healthy debates without the seasoned crowd constantly throwing it up in the "newer" members faces how great it used to be. If you ask me or many others here, that may be precisely why newbies are afraid to even post in the first place.

Hence the "lurkers" thread just recently. As someone new to the forum, you are excited and want to contribute. But when you are always being bombarded with blasts from the past and how it used to be...maybe people feel that they may not live up to the popular click in high school. I just wish that some of the members (people over 10K posts perhaps?) would be a litte more lenient or accepting of the newer wave of forum members.

Times...they are-a-changin'...

That's great but if the times are not changing for the better why would I be happy about that.

Personally I think most of us here are pretty open to change, I know I am but what I don't like is the passive aggressiveness and rudeness that seems to take place here. It is just as annoying for long-time forum members to hear that we can't say this, that or the other because it could prevent a "newbie" from posting or newbies could be afraid to post. I don't think I need to apologize that I have been around for a long time, nor do I need to apologize that I find the new entitlement mentality and judgemental and snappy comments not very appealing. And that certainly has nothing to do with the cool clique at high school!

I think everyone here is accepting and welcomes new members but as it is in real life there is no reason to accept rudeness, not from a new forum member and not from one that has been around long. And I don't see the reason why people can't say what they think as long as it remains civil. Quite frankly I get pretty tired of having to walk around on eggshells around here.

I have seen a bunch of comments and posts from people saying people are so mean here that they are afraid to post and then go at length about how the people who have high post counts or have been around really suck. I am sorry but that doesn't sound like someone being afraid to post. Just sayin' I am sorry if anything here keeps people from posting though.

I don't think anyone here is "stuck" in the way it used to be. I find it kind of interesting that people complain about the "condenscending" old timers by posting condenscending comments about them. I just don't think this you against us mentality is helping to move forward and make this forum a much better place than it used to be.

Well put Carola!

"""I think this forum has changed quite a bit. Personally I think it started happening when STS was first announced & Cathe's appeal & audience broadened exponentially. It used to be a really cozy little forum w/a limited number of members & it really felt like a little extended family"""

And by the way...this particular sentence seems to be the most insulting of all of them. To say that it used to be "cozy" with limited members...that is just a little close minded. Forums grow and attract more people...it is the way it is. World Wide Web....it is open to an exponentially large group of people. That is the goal right? Of any business...to grow and reach as many people possible, to sell their product to as many possible? Particularly in these tough times.

I don't know...as a new member (well NOT new...but new to posting)...this is a bit disheartening to read from one of the seasoned posters.

Huh. I guess you missed where I said I appreciated the new members? Or was that just selective reading on your part so that you could take the opportunity to insult ME, or so that you could play the poor, victimized new member?

Vrinda is right, I meant no offense by it. Just b/c it isn't "cozy" anymore doesn't mean I think it's bad. But thanks anyway for putting words in my mouth & demonstrating the change about which the OP was asking.

I wish it would die, too. It's just going around in circles and getting nowhere. But, I'm sure it will be around for quite a while.

Will stopping the thread end the issues that gave rise to the thread, or just make people feel that their concerns weren't addressed?

I love this board. When it comes to controversial topics, things may get hot but then everyone goes away for a bit to cool off and we come back okay. Endless links to pet vids from YouTube help - A LOT.

It was probably a year ago that I remarked on a Figure Athlete board something to the effect that steroids are cheating. Well, FA is the sister site to T-Nation. Every now and then someone (usually a guy) would just rip into me in what I felt was an unprovoked attack on the TN boards, and I couldn't figure out why. After a female at TN remarked how "bitter and angry" I used to sound (I have less than 160 posts over there) I finally asked what that was about. That's when I found out a few of the people who frequent both boards were still VERY angry about my steroid remarks... from a YEAR AGO. I should have listened to my powerlifting buddy, Dave. He warned me that egos among physique improvement types regarding steroids are dangerously fragile. What he actually said was that I was headed for an "a**-whoopin'" if I weren't careful.

So I asked what was up, because I really didn't know and honestly couldn't recall having said anything that might be controversial. Well, ask and ye shall receive. Some unemployed Montana cowboy with an open marriage who posts CONSTANTLY (and clearly sees himself as the TN alpha male...) ripped me apart about my "unmitigated ignorance" regarding steroids... Like I said, the remarks (looooong-forgotten by me) were made a year ago and only ran for, like, 3 posts! Man, I can't remember who said what yesterday and can't imagine being so invested in the opinion of a person I've never met that I'd let the pot simmer for a year. And the funniest thing is I've read a lot about monitored use of certain types of steroids since and my views have changed considerably - but nobody bothered to ask. My response to the cowboy's vicious rant was a simple "Wow." Maybe if he had a job he'd have bigger things to obsess about. I know I do. I could care less about what the "cowboy" thinks (really, anyone who posts that much needs to get out of the house) but it does blow my mind that others, whose opinions I'd come to respect, share his hatred of me. I tread very carefully over there now.

But believe me, this board, at it's absolute hottest, is a big cozy barcolounger compared to T-Nation and other boards. As far as I know, nobody here holds a grudge for a year before unloading. And I honestly feel that if one of two women who've been at each other's throats over here were to have a sudden tragedy the other would jump in and do anything to help. Over here heated disagreements can always be worked around and everything's fixable. So it's alright.

Great post Stacey!

So well said.

Hey! I hope you're not talking about me! I'd be buying rock salt & scrubbing wounds with it! ;)

Really I'm just bumping to keep this thread from dying. :D

ITA. Like I said before the only other online forum I read is over at Amazon. It's so bad over there that about every six months Amazon has to ban someone from posting. I don't remember anyone ever being banned for here. My mental image of the people over there is a bunch of comic book guys from the Simpsons. Needless to say my mental image of all of you is much more positive!:D
