Vlad ate mouse poison!!!

We have mouses who seem to want to build houses in our sunroom. I can't say I blame them b/c it is cold outside. But, I don't the mouses in MY houses!!!! DH bought some sticky traps and some D-Con mouse poison. The dog hangs out in the sunroom when he is wet/snowy so he doesn't track in the house. I TOLD DH (D doesn't stand for darling today) not to put the D-Con out there. He said he wouldn't leave the dog out there. Well, this morning he left the dog out there for like a minute and Vlad ate about a 3rd of the small box of mouse killer. We looked it up on Google, said D-Con has a sweet smell to dogs and they are prone to eat it, but he should be ok. To DH's defense, it was shoved waaaaay back in the far end of the room behind some flower pots. DH called the vet this morning, said to feed him some hydrogen peroxide so he will yack it up and bring him in. DH fed Vlad the peroxide, he yacked at home and again on the way to the vet in DH's new truck (serves him right). Vlad is at the vet now, they are keeping him for observation but said he will be fine. We are supposed to pick him up at 6:15 tonight. *sigh* What a morning!!

Nan

Oh Nan,
How scary! I'll say a prayer for Vlad.
Poor guy.:(
I've had to administer hydrogen peroxide before. It causes them to heave for sure.

Let us know how he does Nan! Those darn mice! We have them in our garage and I've been hesitant to put out poison for the same reason. I've been catching them other ways and "relocating" them, but they always comes back.

We have them too because we live on several acres of heavily wooded property. The traditional wooden snap traps work really great with peanut butter.

I hate mice and last summer we housed a whole family in our garden and basement...
After Vlad's ordeal I don't feel guilty anymore for massacring the whole rat family (parents, 2 kids, an uncle and an aunt) with rat poison!!!! (I used to feel guilty 'cause the little mice looked so cute and died right there in front of me...)
I was definitely worried every time Merrick (my Frenchie) took a stroll in the garden so I was chaperoning her while she was out....
Vlad will be fine! Give him hugs from me and Merrick!

Chris.

Oh no!!!!!!!!!!!

I'm so glad to hear that Vlad should be fine, but how scary! :( Yeah, I think DH would totally be in the 'doghouse' with me too!!!!!

I'll be thinking of you today!

I'm happy to hear Vlad will be fine. Give him a big hug from me. Tell your DH to put peppermint oil on some cotton balls and place them around the room. Mice can't sand the scent and Vlad won't eat them. :)

Snap traps and sticky traps. Nothing like torturing defenseless animals. Those things are obscene - sorry, it's true. Stick your finger in/on one of those. And if your dog accidentally steps on one of those things - good luck. Back to the vet the have it removed - along with several layers of your dog's paw pads. There are much better, safer, natural, humane ways of dealing with rodents. The peppermint, for one. Finding out where they're coming in and sealing the hole is also necessary to prevent a chronic problem. Check online for other humane options.

Nan,

Maggie did this when she was a puppy also. She will be 3 in April - so not to worry.

Sorry but that's kindof funny about DH's truck - Hee Hee.

Also have the mouse problem going on. Score is Tami 16 Mice 4 - the mice scored when they snatched the bait, rotten little boogers!

I hope Vlad comes out all right. A good reason not to use poison (for other animals--who either eat it directly, or eat a poisoned mouse-- and maybe even children that could get into it).

(Please do not use sticky traps. They are so cruel. :( Certainly there are other ways of getting rid of mice without torturing them to death.)

I've tried this (make a spray of water and some peppermint oil and spray where they might be getting in) and it works! (Much to my cats' chagrin, as they like catching mice!). Just make sure you refresh the scent regularly.

A quick kill is best. Or let you cat torture them to death instead as my cat loves to do. She plays with them until they are dead. Very bad kitty.

Oh no! Poor baby!

I have to say, as someone who had to deal w/a horrible mouse infestation, sometimes you either have to use the poison or be overrun by rodents. Which carry disease. Which also isn't good for your pets. But if you do use poison it's best to hire an exterminator--they know where to place it so your pets can't access it.

That said, the only cure for my rodent problem was a cat.

I think my cat would run away from the mouse! Personally, I'd let the poor things be, but I don't want them to come in the living part of the house. I think both snap traps and sticky trap are mean! DH had already sealed up the hole, I think he sealed them in!! I called the vet, they also gave him some vitamin K (potassium) and he is ok. I tt the receptionist, the Dr who was seeing him is in surgery w/ another pet. She will have the Dr call me back for a full update. But he should be ok. I was reading about it on the web and apparantly D Con kills by forcing internal bleeding - what a horrible thing!!! But, from what I read, the majority of pets come out just fine, unless they ate large amounts. Vlad will be getting big hugs when he gets home, DH is going to get a poke in the nose and a kick in the a$$!!!

Merrick? Named after the witch? If so, cool!

My former coworker used to think that too until some rodents chewed into the wiring that led to the house fire that burned her home and killed her pets who were inside. Some form of pest control can indeed be a life saver. Just a thought.

Ok, well on that note, I think I'm going to up my mice extermination efforts in the garage! Yikes!
