Toenail fungus help

Well, I went to the doctor and my treatment is working. I suspect doctors say treatment is "iffy" they think most patients won't take the effort to do what needs to be done. It also takes many moons for the dead nail to grow out.

Glad to hear your treatment is working. By the way what you said about NOT wearing nail polish is true. My brother in law the Dr. says that it does make it worse. It just traps it and can spread it to other healthy toes. This is making me even more paranoid about bare feet. My husband thinks I'm crazy because I am SOOOO paranoid about not wearing anything on my feet. When we are at a hotel I always wear my flip flops. I would love to take some martial arts classes but I'm a little freaked out about not wearning shoes. I have massive OCD about feet. :(

Regular household bleach works too. You dilute it (working ratio is about 10-15% clorox) and soak your feet in it. Filing the nail down first helps too.

I had toenail fungus a number of years ago and took Lamisil for about 6 months. I had to get monthly blood tests while I was on it, but never had any of the side effects show up. I thought it was a great medicine - worked really well. I have been fungus free for 20 years now. I had tried other treatments (topical preparations and griseofulvin) but they did nothing for me. I would take Lamisil again if I got the fungus again.

i am so glad someone started this thread. i never had any problem til a few years ago. and then one day, my left big toenail was real sore, andthe next day it turned black, just like that. i have fungus in two of my other toenails , but now none of my nails are growing. so, i am totally gonna try the apple cider thing. my dr. told me that the oral meds have some really bad side affects. my husband has heard the a corn meal mash kills it too. but, i haven't tried it. but, i'm gonna have to try the apple cider rememdy. i hope it works.

I had for years and tried the cider, perioxide but nothing worked Was very embarassed by it and never wore sandals. When some of my nails turned black and and became thick I decided to seek treatment. Foot doctor put me on Lamisil and did have to get blood test before, during and after treatment. I had no side effects and not sure why I waited so long. It did take a while for my nails to grow out but has been 3 years and no reoccurance.

I used the Vicks last night and I already see improvement. Since I have the fungi, I have used OTC and prescribed meds but not orally. Last night, I could feel my toes being tingly. No bleach for me but I would try the corn meal next if this doesn't totally work.
Thanks for the thread, it has been very helpful.

I'm so glad people are getting help from this thread. That's what I love about posting. Whatever your issue is, there's bound to be others who are grappling with it as well. I told my BF that I do have some remedies but I haven't been able to present them to him as of yet. He also has consistency issues so with him, timing is everything. Thank you again everyone for all of your great suggestions! I know Lamisil can be a difficult medication to decide to take but for those who have seen results, I'm glad it worked without any side effects.

JT, how great that you already see improvement with the Vicks. Please continue to post with your results.

If anyone else starts to see results with the remedies mentioned, if you could, please share your experience. We would all benefit by it.

Thanks again!

I would be very leery of trying "cures" you read on the "internets" If you have health insurance, go see your doctor. For the cost of a co-pay you can get qualified medical advice as opposed to trying things like bleach which are likely to do more damage and not likely to actually fix the problem.

I'm with Beavs. Some of these "treatments" sound a bit silly to me. I had this issue years and years ago and a few months on an oral prescription medication cleared it right up (after trying other things for a while and none of it worked). I didn't have any problems with the pill I took other than that it could interfere with the effectiveness of birth control pills. So I took other measures for that and was fine. My toes look just fine now but if the fungus came back I sure as heck would high-tail it back to the doctor before pouring other crap on my feet.

well I don't think it hurts to try natural remedies before something that may be harmful to your body and may not even work (like the oral meds). Tea tree oil has natural antiseptic/antifungal qualities. I'd probably not use bleach though. I'm glad I used it. It did the job. The stuff I used was 100% high quality melaleuca oil(tea tree oil). I didn't use anything else with it. I think a few times when it felt really dry I used a drop of EVOO which I hear helps also. I think I only used it once or twice a day. gosh this was like 2 years ago so I don't remember exact details. I would file off the infected nail then put that on what was left.
I tried the apple cider vinegar for like a day but the smell was getting annoying. I may have tried again if the tea tree oil didn't work. def avoid nail polish and wearing socks etc when wanting it to heal. Best to keep it dry and in the air if possible.

After experiencing the unpleasant side effects of oral Lamisil (and deciding that I really do value my liver over my nails) I foolishly tried many of these so called home remedies to no avail. I did try tea tree oil (Melaleuca is a fancy brand name for Amway...you can find other brands out there that are of excellent quality) and there is some medical research to support that it can be helpful but not necessarily a cure all. I gave up and went to a new doctor who precribed a topical cream that has been very effective. Of course you can always try come nice corrosive home remedies if you one of those do it yourselfer types :p

My Dr. said iffy because he said it CAN affect your liver, I'm not taking any chances with my liver. I'll live my nails...

My concern with the prescription drug is the effects that happen later in life. What happens if the liver side effects don't show up until much later after you are done taking them? That's what worries me.

Beavs, what topical cream are you using? I'm shocked that it's working.

I had fungus on two toes for 10 years and had been cautioned not to use Lamisil because of the liver side effects. 2 years ago I was diagnosed with breast cancer and guess what.......the chemotherapy killed the fungus along with the cancer. I'm now cancer and fungus free!

But there are other treatment options out there. Did you read my post? I tried Lamisil to and I happen to share your point of view.

Debbie, I was prescribed Naftin cream. I rub it on my nails twice a day and take great pains to keep the footsies nice and dry. No nail polish (I was advised I could wear it for a special occasion and then take it off) and I would never do another pedicure again. So far, so good and much, much better then when I began treatment.

Beavs, that's my problem: keeping mine dry. My feet sweat like you wouldn't believe and I never go sockless due to how lovely my toes look. I even wear socks to bed because it grosses me out to rub my toe nails on sheets and such. So my feet seem to be wet all the time. Not sure how to remedy that.
