Aw, thanks so much!

Liann, you have a beautiful smile! :D

Dump the BMI!!!! Through your scale away.

I totally get killed by BMI. 5' 7" and 170lbs (buck naked)

My physical fitness numbers are decided by me and my MD.

HDL/LDL Cholesterol
Blood pressure

The rest of my physical fitness quotient is determined by what I can physically do (and want to do)

I had to carry a sheet of 3/4" plywood the other day, can I carry an 80lb bag of cement? Can I go mountain hiking with the kids? Can I save a kid form drowning?

They can stuff those BMI numbers, learn to be happy with yourself!

When I went to the doc 2 years ago, at 5'4", 134, then 42 years old, my cholesterol was 126, BP was 90/50, blah, blah, blah -- she advised I was borderline obese and had to focus on dropping at least 10 pounds (20 would be better she said). I asked her if all of my stats indicated I was REALLY a risk for cardiovascular disease due in part to obesity and she told me had to go by the BMI charts.

There have been a few times since then when I have gone back - and everytime she harps on my weight --- or I SHOULD go back for various things, but I don't want her lecturing me anymore, so I just don't go. I agree -- scrap those charts!!

BMI is BS. Mine is higher than my friends is. We are the same height, but she weighs less. I weigh more, just had my bodyfat tested professionally in a machine at a doctors office and it came out 13.8 percent. My pal's bodyfat is more in the normal range of 22-25 percent. Go figure. So I am "fatter" than her? Think not. BTW, she looks great, i am not using her as an example to "slam" her body at all. Its just the BMI does not make sense to me.
Gosh I hate those friggin charts.

Boy Lorrie, this is one time when I just have to say that your doc is out of line! One thing a doc taught me as a young nurse -- look at the WHOLE picture, look at the patient -- see how they feel, and never go strictly by the numbers (he was referring to lab results but it fits your situation, too).

ETA that BMI doesn't differentiate between lean body mass and fat.

Lorrie - You, borderline obese??? Does your doctor need her head examined??? You aren't even close to being overweight. That's ridiculous!

Lorrie, I would find a new doc if I were you! Those charts don't take into consideration frame size - someone with a large frame with a lot of muscle can carry a lot more weight than someone of the same height with a small frame and not a lot of muscle - the ecto type.

At 5-4 and 140 my Doc tells me to stop losing weight says I am fine at the size 6. You need to find a new doc.

The thing that makes me the most suspicious of the BMI is that it doesn't differentiate between men and women. This makes absolutely no sense to me.

By the way, I'm the opposite of some of you. My BMI is bordering on "underweight", but I know my body fat percentage is well over 25%. My belly actually jiggles like a bowl of jelly when I'm chopping vegetables. I'm not exaggerating. Tneah, I am sooooo envious of your body fat percentage!

BMI is totally ridiculous...it simply calculates height and weight yet does not factor in the composition of that weight.

The fact that muscle weighs more than fat means that someone with a muscular frame will come out at 'obese' or worse on the BMI scale, yet also have visible abs!

Numbers...whether on scales or BMI calculations...should be ignored. The mirror is the best indicator of what shape you're in...plus cholesterol and blood pressure as already mentioned. As you walk down the street, no one knows what weight you are...but they all know what you look like.

Nancy,

Your belly does not do that!:p And BTW, I have been on a 12 -week super strict program to get it this low and frankly, its hard and not fun.I am grouchy and want chocolate all the time.
My "happy"bodyfat is around 18 percent.;)

I don't normally post that often, but I just looked at your pictures Lorrie and I had to say something. You need a new doc, b/c you are no where near overweight...IMO if you lost 20lbs you'd look sick...JMO!

tneah, I would be thrilled with 18%! :p

I just went to research ideal body fat percentages and found this very delightful website :D :D :

BMI is not accurate for people who exercise regularly and are athletic. So, I wouln't put much store in this number if I were you. For example, Arnold Schwarzenegger is considered morbidly obese according to these charts. We all know that muscle weighs more than fat and those who are muscular weigh more. Test your body fat, look at BP, cholesterol, waist-to-hip ratio. BMI is only somewhat accurate for people who are "average". We Catheites are anything but average ;-)

Well said, muscleguy and goldenrun!

Goldenrun, I once treated myself to a check-up by one of those doesn't-take-insurance well-known-by-everyone doctors and she took my waist-to-hip ratio. Makes sense to me.

Lorrie - I have told you before - your doctor is CRAZY! You look wonderful and your weight is excellent. You doctor is really screwed up for saying that!

Clarissa

Yeah Lorrie, I'd get another doctor. I'm 44, 5'4" and weight 135. I don't have an ounce of fat on my arms or legs, wear a size 4-6, and my measurements are 34-27-34. Anyone tells me I'm borderline overweight is going to end up eating the scale.

That's another reason why I never weigh myself!

Nancy,

Now those are some realistic charts, but I was soon distraced by a certain "Tom Venturo"and his impressive set of abdominals under the link "the best abdominal exercises"....:9 yummy.;)

PS. Who got kicked off Top Chef last night? I fell asleep before elimination!x(
