This is why I don't agree with BMI standards

Tneah-

I'm just curious. Why do you want to torture self to such a low body fat percentage? If 18% is your happy body fat percentage, why not stay there? I dare to say 13% is border line too low for good health.

When my BF% gets even close to 15% or so, I don't ovulate. Also, at lower BF percentages there is risk of bone loss and hormone imbalance.

ETA- I also disagree with the BMI reference. It does not take into account the weight of lean muscle.

Just a thought.

Do you guys think that b/c society in general are more over weight that our outlook on normal/overweight/obese as changed? Prehaps people are overweight or border line obese but now that we see so much of it, to have a extra 20-30 lbs on a frame is "normal"?
Everything is so much bigger these days. The couches we buy don't fit 3 people anymore..they fit 5! Kitchen tables and vechiles are also huge compared to yrs ago. Do you think this is done to accomidate society? I think they is a fine line between a normal weight range and overweight.

I looked at some of those pics and no...some of these women didn't look obese or overweight but there were quit a few that were.
Im not particularly fond of BMI charts either. Like Judy said, they don't take into account if you workout or not.I don't even know if they take into consideration bone density? My friend loves it b/c she is 5'8" 120 something lbs and she is in the underweight range.....even though by looking at US,I am the smaller one b/c I workout and she doesn't.And I am 4" shorter but the same weight.

Lori,

I totally agree that our perception of what is overweight and obese and normal is changing!! We are so used to seeing super skinny and super large that what is actually healthy gets blurred.

But, I also think that body type, stature, bone density, musculature all play a role in whether someone is truly a healthy weight or not. I'm sure you all know a lot of "skinny fat" people who may only wear a size 2 but could not do a push-up or run to save their lives. Self magazine had an article on this not to long ago and featured VS model Josie Maran. Yeah, she's thin, but she couldn't get through the workouts on dancing with the stars b/c she was so out of shape. Pretty intersting in my book.

I just went to the doc a couple weeks ago and was totally surprised when she came in and said that my BMI states I am in the obese category and that I should try to lose weight to get it down to the normal range.

I have been going to her for years and she has never said anything about the weight. OK, I could stand to lose but what is up with the BMI all of a sudden??

I workout 6 days a week, can do pushups on my toes but not many as I have a bad shoulder so I do them on my knees. I bet she doesn't do any of that stuff.

Tneah, aside from my envy, I really do think your body fat % is too low, as Judy mentioned. Women just weren't built to have so little body fat.
Erik (the tall bald guy) got kicked off TC. I didn't like the challenge at all. These chefs aren't caterers. Making food that travels well is not what they do. Last season was WAY better, IMO.

Thanks Nancy! I caught the rerun last night, and agree with you. Eric's corndogs would have been perfect if they didn't have to transfer them..I agree that challenge was stupid, not sure if I am liking this season too much either. I kind of find the chef who uses strange elements and things in his cooking, and of course Chef Tom. But we need to see more of Chef Tom!:p

BTW, I am wrapping up this program in a few weeks. It was some thing I did to challenge myself after my hip surgery, and to help clean up my eating and drinking habits. I agree that maintaining a very low bodyfat is hard on both the mind and the body. The good news is, I also had a bone scan done, and my score was really, really high which is terrific.:)

If I plug 5'4" and 134 pounds into my BMI calculator, it comes up with a BMI in the normal range (23.0). Why would your doctor tell you that you needed to lose weight?!?! I'd say that, not only are they nuts to not look at the overall health picture, but they're also VERY BAD AT MATH!! Get a new one - hopefully one who can use a calculator in addition to common sense!! :7

BTW, I had to calculate it because your numbers are close to mine, and you had me really concerned about what my doctor might say to ME on my next trip in...
