The new fashion trends...

am I old or something? I can not get into the new styles. I go to stores and try on clothes and, yuck!!! Anyone else out there feel the same? I just bought a wide brown belt to wear around my waist over a shirt and still... I just feel lost lately. I think I might return it tomarrow!:-(

I agree with you! I really hate most of the "styles" right now - leggings, low cut pants (a horrible look for most women), "maternity" tops (tunics), camisoles that are really just underwear - and on and on!!!! But wherever I go - to a nice restaurant or even to a funeral - people are wearing this stuff. It seems that nobody thinks they need to "dress nice" anymore. I just stick to the traditional stuff from LL Bean or Lands End. I hope this "fashion cycle" will cycle out soon!

You know, I really like the metallic trend this season. It started last year & I am definitely into it.

And I found skinny pants I can live with--CROPPED skinny pants. They're great for women with my body type--short with short legs.

The other stuff--dolman sleeves, tunics, leggings, etc. I can't stand. I'm sticking with the traditional look for everything else. ;-)

Oh, please tell me leggings aren't coming back in style!!! I have the same problem finding decent clothes. I'm right at that in between age where I'm not quite wearing clothes like my mom, but all this teeny bopper crap isn't working for me either. There doesn't seem to be a happy medium. :(

I soooo agree! I was at an event at my local Nordstrom last weekend and if I had a dollar for every "crack" I had to see, I could have paid for all the make-up I bought! It's horrible - especially the poor lady who really should have worn another style but went ahead and put pantyhose on instead. Not a pretty picture!

I peeked at your picture trail Robin, and I am very certain you would look good in anything.

I like the tunic tops because I guess I am sorta more into a hippie look. I like the longer style shirts. However I hate jean shopping. I have a little too much "junk in the trunk" to wear most of the current jean stylesx(

I just watch "What Not to Wear" and then dress for my body type. I like the jeans and tshirt look when the weather is cooler and a simple skirt and tank/tshirt in the summer. But as a SAHM I don't have to worry too much about following fashion trends - my daily companions (daughters 4 and 2yo) think I look like a princess when I have nothing on but a towel wrapped around my head!!!

I also live in a very laid back town where everyone one does their own thing and gets along pretty well. Dreadlocks are very popular here and clothes that allow for outdoor activities.

No, stirrip pants that the crotch hangs down to your knees when you wash themm. How about the big rolly polly socks for them...????
Like leg warmers...
I hate the styles too...

I actually used to like the leggings + tunic top look in the 80's/early 90's. They looked good on me (I have big calves, and they gave me a muscular-leg look while covering the softer/higher spots!).

I am a big believer in cost per wear and every time I buy something I have to: 1. absolutely love it or definitely need it (like underwear :p ) and 2. I think how much am I going to use this (here something that maybe is a little pricey becomes cheaper with time because I'm going to use it a lot i.e. cost per wear) and 3. I ask myself is this going to be "in style" next season? I buy mostly classic pieces and I just buy one or two trendy pieces that work for my body type.

If you don't absolutely love that belt then send it back and get something you know you're going to use. Also, trends are not universal. Leggins, for example, I wouldn't be caught dead in those. I think that you can find some classics and mix it up with some trendy pieces. I bought a tunic yesterday, but it has an empire waist, a v-neck and it's not too long. It actually looks like a dressy top (which I know I can pair up with anything) and it has a classic style (yes it's kinda trendy because it's a tunic but I know it won't go out of style because it looks like a regular top). Also, dollman sleeves, forget about it, those are not going to stay for long. Sometimes you can get classic pieces that always work for you in the colors of the season, this season: black and white, yellow, and navy are stronger than ever, and you can always get a new piece of jewelry, a handbag, or new shoes to punch up any outfit. :)

You just made me laugh out loud, and that is weird for me when I'm by myself!

That picture is hilarious!

I agree, jean shopping stinks! However, if you have a "ghetto booty", (that's what my sister-in-law says I have), you might want to try the Drew Sexy jeans at the Limited. I'm not sure that's exactly what they're called, but something like that.

Yuk most styles now look great for my pre teen and thats it.Oh Paris and LoLo, Lindsay, do well in them also. What eve!LOL!

LOL, Robin!! That's exactly how I think I would look in cropped skinny pants!! I love your sense of humor!! :D

And THEN people wonder WHY I haven't bought any new clothes after losing weight!!! WTH, with styles like these, who'd want to waste the money!!!

I almost cried in the mall last week. I had money to spend but I couldn't find a thing I wanted to buy. I left the mall with a pair of dressier black jeans and a sweater, and the jeans needed alterations. First of all, why would a designer put slant pockets on womens slacks? They don't flatter any body type. I liked everything else about the jeans so I had the seamstress sew the pockets shut. The sales people in every store I shopped in all agreed that the styles are mostly unflattering this year. I have a trip to Italy coming up and I can't find a thing to wear :-(

I find that the fashions either cater to stylish 50+ women or teenagers (I'm neither). Anyone in between will have a hard time finding nice clothes particularly if they are looking form something a bit different or not the conservative Eddie Bauer look--nothing wrong with it but not my style. I find I have to shop at over priced boutiques to get anything unique yet age appropriate.
