Spazzing on Pushups

I dread the chest/shoulders/biceps days because of all the pushups! I can barely do a "regular" pushup and find it difficult to even get through the entire 30 rep set on my knees! And forget it on the Elmo ones...

Has anyone else had the same problem? I feel like a weakling lol. How long has it taken everyone to be able to complete a set on their toes like Cathe & the crew?

I can't do them all on my toes yet. However, I did manage to go from zero on my toes to 20 good ones.

Someone on the forum suggested doing push ups on an incline ~ say the back of the couch, then maybe the arm, then perhaps your step with 4 risers, then 3 risers, etc ~ and that worked like a charm!

Prior to that, I was always on my knees and getting nowhere. When I started STS, I decided to do all those push-ups off the back of the couch, and I quickly got stronger. I moved from couch to step and eventually made it to the floor.

Now I do as many as I can on the floor, then move to the step when necessary.

Hey Melissa,
I just started the STS program, starting week 4, but i have exercised in the past. with that said, i still can't do push ups on my toes, i still am doing them on my knees!! anyways, i do the best i can, hopefully one day not only will i be able to do all of them with not too much difficulty, but maybe on my toes!! so, hang in there. ;)

GREAT suggestion!! I am def going to try this. I've been doing pushups on my knees for a year and still cant bang a decent one out on my toes; hopefully this height interval set will help condition me!!

I agree with you all on the push ups from the knees - I've never progressed doing them this way. I got the Turbo Tower so when I do my next round of STS I'm hoping that using it to assist on the Push Ups I'll finally make some headway. In the meantime I've been avoiding them:eek:

I find I can do about 25 regular push-ups in a row. I can't for the life of me do the Elmo push-ups and really struggle w/ the narrow or tricep push-up on my toes. on her GS chest and triceps DVD I can do the first 16, and then I do the first half of the rest of the sets and finish out each set on my knees. I still can't get over how many Cathe can do...WOW!!!!

You'll get there. Keep in mind, a pushup is actually a total-body exercise. If you have a week core, or poor form, you will not be able to do push-ups from your toes. Keeping your body straight and tight, not caving in to your shoulders, and not letting your abs sag will make a HUGE difference in your ability to do pushups from your toes. It's a process - keep at it and you'll get there!

Hunderedpushups.com really worked for me!! It is a patient and persistent program (imo).......and I incorporated it in after the warmup of the chosen workout....and then just skip or just do some of the pushups (if any) of that particular workout.. hth.

THE KEY to MASTERING PUSH UPS!!

Hello Ladies,

I COMPLETELY understanding, jumping into many push-ups on your toes can be daunting and nearly impossible, especially if you haven't worked up to this.

When I was running competitively I had a coach that told me that push ups were the KEY TO GREAT ARMS and abs (yes aBS!!). We had to start doing push ups EVERY day before and after our runs. When we started none of us could get through 5 proper push ups. but after much effort and practice (everyday) we were soon doing 20-30 before and after each workout.
To this day I still do push ups religiously - in fact I am continuously asked how I get such great arms, I always say "Push Ups!".

Here is my advice, try 1-5 twice a day each day, and slowly add one more on as you get stronger. Not only will it become easier, you will see great results in your arms. Remember better to do one correct push up with correct form than 10 incorrect ones).

Hope this Helps!

I too was in the same boat.......oddly enough as the reply above stated, once I put my focus on my abs and lower back...everything seemed to fall in place. If your core is strong it will greatly assist you.
