Sleep Number Bed or regular mattress???

I need to get a new mattress stat! We've needed a new one for a while but I just never got around to it. Now the side DH sleeps on has a valley in it.:(

My dilemma......I want to get a new one but am not sure what to get. I don't mind spending the money on a mattress that is outstanding since I tend to spend a bit more than a third of my day in bed....especially on the weekends. Oh, how I love my ZZZZZZZ's.:D

So, what do you all think? What is the best mattress out there? Is the sleep number all it's cracked up to be? Or is it just a waste of money?

Thanks so much for any help in advance.

Angie

DH and I took the plunge and got a Tempurpedic bed. We absolutely LOVE it! I've heard not-so-great things about the sleep number, so perhaps if someone here has one and loves it, they can help you with more information on that type of bed.

The tempurpedic beds (at least where we got ours) are returnable for 90 days, but you cannot return them in the first 30 of those 90... because it really does take a little bit to get used to it. But we say at least weekly how much we love it.

Feel free to ask any more questions if you find that you're interested in this kind of bed. I honestly cannot say enough wonderful things about it!:)

I've heard that those mattresses can break down fairly quickly and doesn't provide the same support as in the beginning. Not sure if that is true though. How long have you had yours?

I think DH and I would definitely consider one though b/c we have the 2 inch memory foam topper on our current bed. As I recall, it did take some getting used to but made a big difference in walking up without sore hips and shoulders.

Hmmm, hadn't heard that, but glad to know. We have had ours about 2 years now... so not very long. But I know we have some sort of warranty or such on it. I'll have to check with DH (who is sleeping right now because he's sick!) and find out for sure.

I know it's a tough decision with everything out there!

When I was in grad school I had a studio apartment and slept on one of those air mattresses that was about the quality level of a backyard-pool floatation device. It was all vinyl and, with just a fitted sheet over it, got hot in the night. But it was the only time in my entire life when I slept all through the night and woke with no back pain, cramps, or discomfort of any kind. Sleeping on air is a whole 'nother experience so I've really been wanting a Sleep Number. But I want a fairly basic one, instead of a pillow-top. I think too much "stuff" between me and the air chambers would negate the benefits of sleeping ON AIR. I've been wanting a Sleep Number for years. It would be so great to sleep on air again and wake up pain-free.

We have the Sleep Number and have had it for a while now - we love it. My MIL an her sister also have one. We are all very pleased :)

My mom just ordered a Dux bed (she's undergoing chemo and wanted to treat herself to a primo bed). I laid on it in the showroom, and it felt amazing. It's supposed to be great for getting the ultimate sleep experience!

Can you tell me . . . regarding the temperapedic mattress, do you feel your partner toss and turn throughout the night? I swear, my DH turns over like a moose - don't know why he has to turn so hard. Short of sleeping in a different bed, I would love to find a mattress that really helps with that. If I could find one - cost would be the last thing on my mind!

Thanks for any input.

We are considering purchasing a sleep number bed. I'm tired of waking up with a sore back. I'm convinced it's our firm mattress.
I'm interested in reading reviews.:)

We also bought a Temperpedic bed and LOVE it!! DF loves to toss and turn at night, and I swear he never wakes me up anymore!! (Except for the occasional snoring, lol) It takes a bit of getting used to , but now I would never go back to a regular mattress. I used to wake up a lot at night, but now I sleep right through like a baby!

ITA!! We bought the Temperpedic Grand bed and absolutely love it!! It did take a few weeks to get used the "feel" but now I wouldn't sleep on anything else. It supports and hugs your body like no other mattress. No more aches & pains:) and I don't feel DH move at all. We also got the Temperpedic pillows free with the mattress!

Mo - I cannot feel my husband toss/turn, nor can I feel if he gets up for some reason and plops back down into bed. We tried the trick (because we're like children) of having a glass of water on one side of the bed and jumped up and down on the other. It didn't move. :D

We got those pillows, too! DH hated his, and wasn't willing to keep it. I still sleep on mine, and no longer get cricks in my neck.

I bought a Sleep Number bed earlier this year.
The first night on it, I slept straight through, which I hadn't been doing with my previous bed (but it was a 20-year-old futon:eek: and lumpy!).

There was a problem with the air mattress part of it at first : a leak. But I called QVC customer service (a special number just for QVC Sleep Number customers) and they sent me a new one really quickly.

The only thing I didn't like about it is that they exaggerate how little time and effort it takes to set up. 30 minutes? Yeah, if 2-3 people are doing it, maybe. No tools? Okay, if you have fists like mallets (I used a 2-3# vinyl-coated weight to pound some frame parts together).

We have a sleep number (dual chamber King) and it is perfect but, like Kathryn, I have am now having issues with one side of the matress going soft every night and before I go to bed I have to dial it back to the regularly set number... SN customer service is very helpful and should I ever have the time to disconnect the pump from that side of the matress to see if it is the mattress that leaks or the pump is bad, I may be able to get it fixed.. why rush, I have another 12 months on the warranty right?

I MUST say though that the main reason that DH and I purchased this one was because we could each get our OWN firmess!!! I am a sucker for super soft (i'm a #30) and DH is a hard as a rock preference (he's a #70 - ouch) so it makes for a perfect resolution and compromise.

Besides the cost I can not say I regret the purchase...

Last year day after Thanksgiving they had a really awesome sale and I received more than $300 off! If you can wait another month, it might be worth it!

Good luck!

Thanks for the advice everyone....

Hey Dani - Do you feel a big difference when you roll over to the other side? I mean, is it like 2 separate sides??? I guess I want it to feel uniform (comfortable to both) yet not a huge distinct difference (or barrier) where there is a major difference if I happen to roll over to the other side when DH is not there during deer season:rolleyes:.....if that makes sense??? Also, I frequently find myself hogging the bed and I don't want to feel like I'm teetering between mattresses ya know?

I guess what I really want to know is if I'm hogging the bed will I still be comfortable??:D:p

Hey Angie:

well, there is a foam divider that they put in between each mattress and both mattresses zip together top and bottom around this foam divider so that you don't "fall through the cracks" so to speak, and you can feel it to a point, but it gives if ever I ended up there somehow. ;) I also think that it definately depends on what pillow top you buy. I got the 5000 series but I assume that if you go to the 7000 or 9000 you wouldn't notice it at all. I'm not a thrasher or a bed hog, as I take "sleep aids" so I pretty much stay put once I finally go comatos... but I couldn't imagine having the one piece mattress size and have only ONE sleep number because DH and I are so polar opposite... I also think that I could stand to put one of those twin size memory foam under the pillow top for a little added support. I sleep on my sides so hips and knees get sore but just doesn't feel right to go much lower on my # as things definately sags!

My ONE complaint with the whole set up is that the sides are also made of this foam. the sides smoosh when you sit on the side much more than a regular mattress (and will eventually need replacement from what I have read)... I still would recommend it! Nothing lasts forever! :D

HTH's :)

I don't know how much space you have but if your room can handle a King size bed you could simply connect two twin size mattresses of your choosing. Way back in the day my (late) parents did that because my dad HAD to have a mattress hard as a board and my mom... didn't. Also, she was a very light sleeper. Worked for them.

I thought about this too but couldn't figure out how to keep them together ~ sheets can only hold so much I would think... maybe there is some sort of strap you could get that would keep them securely together to prevent landing on the boxspring underneath

Also, being that I had to have a soft plushy pillow top and DH could sleep on a sheet of plywood and be perfectly content, there would be a difference in mattress thickness in our bedroom. I suppose you could put something under the thinner mattress to elevate it to be the same height...

Hmmm... brings to mind "Leave it to Beaver" reruns. I believe my grandparents did this (two twins) as well! I slept very comfortably (head on gramma, feet on grampa or vise versa as I HAD to be touching them BOTH at the SAME time ~ I was needy apparently) when I was little! ;) Good Idea SSW! :) Would have saved some major DOUGH if I could have figured this one out...
