Real controversy--Let's talk pie!

Sweet potatoe pie? Do you make that yourself? Or can you buy in stores. I have never seen it in my neck of the woods. I love me some sweet potatoes.

Confession time...I can't cook for crap!!!! My mother or sister makes them every Thanksgiving. I do see the frozen pies during the holiday season. My favorite 'I eat well 363 days of the year so I'm going to have my pie and eat it too' dessert is sweet potato pie with eggnog ice cream...which I can only find around the holidays.

My two days of the year to let it all hang out as far as food goes is Thanksgiving and Christamas Eve.

My birthday is in December so I eat well because if I had to choose, I'd rather pig out celebrating a day for everyone than a day that is just for me.:D

Loving these responses!

I knew pie loyalty would strike a nerve here. But, the bravery of the whispered confessions from the bi-pie-ers? And those who deny both and name their own? THAT'S making a stand! I tell you, it's inspirational...

Plus, I'm getting hungry. :D

BTW, Costco makes a good pumpkin pie (not too clove-y) and I really like their pumpkin cheesecake too. (Alas, it's not vegan for those of you who are.)

I like neither! I also don't like cheesecake (GASP). I do love me a good apple pie, though!

Last weekend, my boyfriend and I just ate a whole sweet potato pie by ourselves in less than 24 hours!! They are delicious!

A lady I know who has an apple orchard bakes a lot of pies to sell and I mentioned sweet potato to her last year and now she makes them for me (and others!) if I ask real nicely!! I don't know about store bought, but I'm sure if you google 'recipe for sweet potato pie' you can find a good recipe. Around here (western PA) they sell them at a few grocery stores this time of year, but I've never tried them.

Roderin...I'm telling you...if you eat it in less than 24 hours, it has no calories.

IMHO, I think it's blasphemous ANY day to eat a store bought/made pie. Homemade is so much better! :D

I vote neither pumpkin nor pecan. I vote for lemon meringue!! :)

I must confess that I'm a pie-infidel - I couldn't make a pie from scratch if you put a gun to my head.
That being said:

Pumpkin is where it's at (especially the frozen kind at Rainbow that you bake up for 70 minutes and smell up the house all nice and good) followed by lemon meringue. Followed by key lime pie by Pepperidge Farm!

No one has said anything about mince meat. Where's the love, people?

LOL!!! How I needed this post today!

PS...you guys know I'm kidding, right? Something about the sound of meat in my pie is enough to start rocking myself on the kitchen floor.

LOL!! That is wonderful information that I'll have to remember as I shovel another down this weekend!! Thanks!:p:p

Egg nog ice cream?!? I never knew this existed! Where do you find?!?

I think Edy's brand makes some - it's 'limited edition' so only around this time of year. They also have Apple Pie, Pumpkin, and (my favorite) Peppermint.

have not heard of blue bell but we have blue bunny. we also have a local creamery that does homemade ice cream and egg nog. OMG i usually don't care for egg nog but this stuff is really good. comes in a glass bottle like the milkmen used to deliver.

i think edy's is just a national name brand.

Jonezie - Hahaha! Mincemeat! I actually have to make this for my mother around the holidays...but I buy the mincemeat in a jar. Is there actually MEAT in this?? Ewwwww...it sounds so.....Sweeny Todd.

OK...please don't hate me for corrupting the purity of pie even further with egg nog talk but I have to say...I blend my egg nog in a blender full of shaved ice (like Sonic ice if any of you are familiar). I mean, I pour the egg nog in just enough to cover the ice well. Then I blend until there are no little ice chunks. Put a marachino (SP?) cherry in and grind some fresh nutmeg. It makes me feel like there are less calories (ha ha) when it's blended and it's sooooo good. Anyone else have egg nog secrets?

PS...Laura...meat in a jar?!? Yikes! But I think it doesn't actually include meat anymore (but that old recipes did). Can anyone advise on the meat in mince meat? I'm going to start saying that, by the way. "You put the meat in mince meat."
