Punching gloves for heavy bag bonus?

You will definitely want gloves when using a heavy bag. I have these Harbinger MMA gloves and really like them.

I've never seen ones like this before. Is there any weight to them or just cushion?

Nevermind...I'll look them up

Thanks for the website connections. That was very thoughtful. The gloves looks great. Dont mind investing in those, but the heavy bag is "weigh" too expensive for me to invest!

What do you think?

IMHO, if you are not actually punching a bag, there really isn't any need for "padded" gloves. You could look into wraps if you want something on your hands.

Heavy bags can be very expensive but someone mentioned in another thread that she got one off craigslist at a good price. I bought mine at a karate supply store and got a great price because it was a floor model. However, if you only plan to use a bag for Cathe's boxing dvd and don't plan to incorporate it into your regular workout routine, it may not be worth spending the $$$. My entire family is in karate and the bag gets used a lot so the cost was justified. For me, working the bag is one of my most intense workouts.

This is what I use:

I train in boxing and kickboxing 1-2 times a week and work on a heavy hanging bag with these beautys

With some handwraps underneath, you will not feel the hardness of the bag at all. They weigh 10 oz, so have a little weight on them.

Although I don't have my own bag at home (I use the ones at our MMA club), there is no way you can get the same workout if you work without a bag. It ups the intensity factor and the muscle work factor. I can shadow box like a madwoman, but there is no way I will get doms like when I workout on a bag. Personally I also prefer a hanging bag to a standing one. I think they are cheaper too.

Judi, what did you fill your standing bag with? Sand?? Water??? Is it hard to lug around once you finish your workout?

Those are beauties! Where do we get em!

Mine is filled with water but I can still move it around. The bag does move around a bit when I'm using it but I have enough room so I just keep circling it.

Is that you in your avatar using a Bo? I see you mentioned you spar....are you in some form of karate? I was screening for my black belt 3 years ago when I tore my rotator cuff completely during sparring. Took a year off for rehab, went back and while screening again, I suffered a hamstring tear:( I think I am destined to remain a brown/double black stripe! However, DH, DS and DD all tested and received their black belts.

Hi Judi, yes I practice Shorin Ryu karate, and tested for my black belt 2 years ago. I am up for my 2nd degree in March 2010. Unfortunately, I have suffered a few injuries this year (broken ankle, 2 sprains, 2 muscle tears) and have been in physiotherapy for the last 8 months. I continue to train, but am not back to the level of fitness I was 2 years ago.

Although, technically I am ready for my 2nd degree black belt in March (I know and master all required katas and techniques), my cardio vascular fitness isn't what it was 2 years ago. So, we'll see.

My 2 sons do karate as well. My oldest son is a black belt and will be up for 2nd degree black belt in March as well. My youngest just passed his blue belt and my husband will be getting his blue belt before xmas.

And yes, that is a bô in my avatar. Bô kata are my specialty. Actually, kata in general are a specialty of mine, they come to me easy. Sparring does not... I have to work really hard at sparring just to get through a round without getting killed LOL

I can completely sympathize with the injuries. My surgeon advised that I not spar anymore do to the vulnerability of my shoulder:( Luckily, I had sparred enough prior to my injury that my instructor will still allow me to test without sparring. I just don't know if I'm ready to risk my body again:confused: I'm like you.....much better at form than sparring.

Good luck in March with your second degree testing! Let me know how you do.

For my 2nd degree, I have 7 rounds of sparring to do. They are mandatory, but they will place you with partners of your level. We have some very aggressive teens and young adults... much too aggressive for this 40 year old!! Fortunately, they don't require us to win our fights, just get through them with a minimum amount of effort (at least that's what they do with old folks like me :p)
