RE: Not that I'm an enabler, but...

sunnyside,

What kind of equipment do you REALLY need? I'm trying to find shorter strength workout... is there anyway you could shorten the strength workout? The cardio sound sooooo interesting...

RE: Not that I'm an enabler, but...

Steppinfool, You can definitely shorten the strength workouts. I haven't done them all yet, but the ones I have done are done in groups. Like you do 1 exercise each for shoulders, bi's and tri's and then you repeat that. Then do another group of 3 different exercises for the same muscles and repeat. I think you do that about 4 or 5 times, all different exercises each group. So, you can just do the first set and not repeat those 3 exercises a second time. That would split your time in half. They even suggest this after you are all done with the 90 days for mantainence.
As for equipment, you need dumbells or bands (no barbell is used). You need some kind of a pull up bar. You can get one to put in a doorway, or they also use the bands hooked to something up high to simulate this move, more like a lat pull down. I've heard other people using their barbell set on the rack (or on 2 chairs somehow) and pulling up while lying down. Does that make sense? I'm lucky enough to have a pullup bar on my weight station. I can do 2 total un-assisted and then about 8 to 10 assisted (using my foot on a chair to help me up). The girl on the workouts can do about 10 un-assisted and about 20 or so assisted (I can't recall exactly but she is strong!) That tells me how much strength I can still gain. I can usually lift as heavy as Cathe on most exersises. Pullups are tough. You also need a chair, I just use the high step. I think that's all that's really nessesary. The pullup bar is probably the only thing you'll need that you don't have.

rcook, you'd love the legs and back workout for your freestyling. It mostly uses your own body weight. There are a few weighted exercises. I did this yesterday and I can't even sit, walk, or climb stairs with out being reminded of my sore butt. The back exersices in this workout are pullups. You do 2 leg exercises then 1 set of pullups and repeat that sequence with new exercises each time.

RE: Not that I'm an enabler, but...

Hi Kathy,
Thanks for your helpful information. I followed your instructions and I'm up to the last page before you "commit". It asks for a promotional code and I wonder if I need one to receive the 15% discount from beachbody. If so, how do I find it?
Thanks, Kellye :)

RE: Not that I'm an enabler, but...

Hi,

There's a link on videofitness under bargains that will link you to the 15% off.

How many push-ups??

Hello,
I watched chest and back today and wondered how in the heck am I going to do all those push-ups. I couldn't even wrap my brain around the pull-ups. I did the cardio portion today and found it okay. That was after I did power hour. I hope I like the rest.

RE: How many push-ups??

Ok, really big THANKS to everyone (I say that VERY sarcastically) because, yes, I CAVED!!!!

Uggghh.. I just HAD to get on here this morning and see this!!! Then, by the time I meandered over to the Beach Body website and saw all those lucious previews....well, I had a Cathe momement. There was just no turning back. I did however take advantage of all the discounts. Thank you everyone who mentioned those.

AJOCK....there was no PLYO preview. I was so miffed!! But, I will serve as guinea pig then and let you know, k? I am going to have to go out and get a Power Tower now, but that is not too expensive of a piece of equipment and well worth it, IMO. It is time to stop dicking around and be able to do push ups and pull ups!! I have been on this site for too long to say I cannot do these! Sheesh!!

As always, I can count on all of you to spend my money for me. KA-CHING!

I will check back when I get the vids..

Janice

Oh, AJOCK......When you order there is a 30-day money back gaurantee and they say that even if you return your vids, the PLYO tape is yours to keep complimentary!! Hey, maybe that is what you should do!!:):):)

I also love P90X! At first, the look of all those push-ups and pull-ups in the chest/back workout (the first one in the rotation, if you follow their schedule) was quite daunting, so I put off using it. Then, one day I decided to try the shoulder and arms workout and jump right in mid rotation. I've done 3 workouts so far (Shoulder/arms + ab ripper; Kenpo; and Legs and Back) and am planning Yoga X for today (though a 90-minute yoga workout--especially for a non-yoga person like me--is rather intimidating! I have previewed it, though, and like Tony's athletic, non-mystical approach to it).

Seems like a lot of you are talking about the cardio workouts on this series, but I think the weight workout is what really sells it for me (actually, the whole shebang--all 13 workouts--works so well together). The speed allows you to go heavy. You can set your own target number of reps. There is no rushing between exercises and nice stretches are dispersed throughout the weight work. Lots of new moves (effective ones, not "new moves" that are just randomly put in to be different) that really work your muscles in new ways and keep them guessing.

I've got to say that these are now my favorite weight workouts. Yes, I'm a heretic!!

RE: Not that I'm an enabler, but...

Hi Kellye!

Sorry to be so long getting back to you -- we've been out of town and I haven't been online. You don't need to enter a promo code, the discount just automatically shows up on your invoice page. (Of course, that was the point at which I personally chickened out. Still wanting to read more reports! ;-))

Hey Kathryn and other P90Xers!

OOOOOOO Kathryn -- girl, your FAVORITE WEIGHT WORKOUTS?? That IS heresy!! ;-)

Hey, a coupla questions for you, and anybody else who wants to chime in who's already doing P90X.

First, what is Kenpo (some form of kickboxing/martial arts, I know, but can you tell us more?)

Second, for those of us who might be tempted but are either (1) push-up weenies (that'd still be me, although I'm improving) or (2) don't want to invest in any pull-up equipment right now, what could be effectively substituted for the pull-ups and some of the push-ups? Or maybe sub in a whole Cathe chest and back workout? (If so which one?)

I do have to say that for the discounted price, THIRTEEN high-quality tough workouts covering the whole spectrum PLUS nice written materials is a pretty good value. And I really didn't find Tony Horton's manner objectionable on those preview mini-movies, even though a lot of VFers don't like him.

Oh dear. ;-)

RE: Not that I'm an enabler, but...

Thanks Kathy,
I haven't taken the plunge yet either, but I predict it won't be too much longer. I've been hearing so many reports of how challenging it is and I'm such a sucker for a very challenging workout - so far Cathe is IT. I think she'll always be IT, even if I cave in on P90X and it's as good as it sounds. Thanks for the help with ordering, not that you're enabling me or anything.....

RE: Hey Kathryn and other P90Xers!

Kathy S...

I thought Tony Horton was great, especially in the mini "movie" where he yells at everyone for eating pizza and pop tarts. I think I will like him.

Plus, he's REAL easy on the eyes, if you know what I mean ;) HUBBA-HUBBA!!! I can't wait to get this series, and my pull up tower. FINALLY I might get strong!:)

Janice

Janice!

Not that it mattered to me AT ALL ;-), but yeah, I thought Tony was easy viewing.

I liked his pizza & pop tarts speech, too. Generally I thought he was very playful and cheeky in the way he coached (well, badgered) those poor, tired cast members -- not unlike the way I imagine the wee Ms. Friedrich would treat us all in person if she were training us to be in a video. :) (Except that maybe she wouldn't rant about Devil Dogs, being a recovering Devil Dog addict herself. :))

RE: Janice!

Hi Kathy. Kenpo is a martial arts workout. There is zero choreography in this workout and the moves seem to be more controlled, which gives you the feel that you are learning self defense moves. I love this workout.

Yes, push ups and pull ups are the main exercises for chest and back. There is someone who is always using the bands during the pull ups. I really don't see why you can't sub regular db or bb chest presses for chest work. But, definitely make it a point to challenge yourself with the push ups. He does a wide variety, so it will be boring, and again, there is someone who does some of them on their knees.

RE: Kepi!

Wow! This thread has taken on a life of its own!

I am a diehard Catheite.....but, P90x is awesome! I can't believe how strong I feel after just one month. Although I will admit that I've substituted a few Cathe workouts along the way (I just missed her too much!!LOL). It was totally worth the price!

RE: Hey Kathryn and other P90Xers!

>First, what is Kenpo (some form of kickboxing/martial arts, I

The Kenpo workout has the usual jab and cross punches, and front, side and rear kicks and knee smashes, but some different moves are blocks (with arm, and with elbow) and some vertical punches (fists with palms facing in).

I haven't done the chest/back workout yet, but I did do the legs/back and I substituted a variety of moves for the pullups (barbell row, dumbell rows, seated dumbell rows and pullovers while lying on an incline--on my Bodywedge). The best substitution for the pullups seemed to be the pullovers, which really hit the lats hard, while allowing me to have support for the lower back.

For chest, I am a push-up weenie, and often avoid them because of past problems with carpal tunnel and a geetchy shoulder. I plan to do those that can be done with push-ups handle bars, and turn the others into dumbbell presses.

RE: Not that I'm an enabler, but...

I am soooo excited about the P90X. I was almost at the end of the purchase yesterday but it looks that the 15% discount is over.
Do you or anyone knows if the Beachbody is going to offer any promotions in the future? I know I can get 20% rebate but getting extra 15% off will be really helpful.
Thanks for the info.
