Please don't flame me, but

I think it's a sad statement about Catheland that so many feel they have to start a question or statement with the line "Please don't flame me, but..."

Robbin,

I have to agree with you. It is so sad. Any ideas?

I totally agree. We may not all agree with each other. There is a polite way of saying to someone "I see your point, but I disagree" and then state your point of view. Everyone has the right to express opinions and contribute to a discussion. BUT people do not have the right to insult someone.

I think the Internet gives people a sense of anonymity. There are certain individuals who take advantage of the fact that no one knows they are. I think they just troll around to cause problems. It is best to ignore them.

This has always been such a friendly place, but as Cathe's business grows so with the members in the forum. I know it is hard and I am not perfect with this myself, but I think we will all have to try and ignore those folks who just want to ruin a good thing.

I agree.

It's great that we are able to discuss things that are not allowed on other forums, but I think some take that freedom to mean free reign to be not-so-nice.

Granted, there are times when some posts might be a case of "you can't hear tone or voice in written communication" or "it came off sounding more blunt than intended" (because the author was in a hurry, off to do something else, for example---at least that's what happens with me some times). But the outright namecalling and direct insults against people, that's not copacetic.

And I think that stupid star system for rating threads (what's the point) also encourages some nasty behavior (that is more anonymous): giving 1 star to threads you don't agree with or whose author you don't like for some reason. I think that aspect of the forums should be disabled.

ITA (and while we're at it, can we get rid of the 10 char. minimum for posts?!)

I agree w/this as well. I know there are some members of this forum who, for lack of a better term, really hate me, but to give me a one star rating for every single post is incredibly immature & spiteful. Truthfully, I'm a little sad for the members who do this. I mean, if this is the only thing that gives satisfaction to their pitiful, small existence, perhaps they should be allowed. In fact, maybe I'll give every single post I make from now on a one star just to add a little light to their lives. :p

And I apologize if I've contributed in any way to the atmosphere buffetgirl described. I know I'm obnoxious & opinionated, I admit to biting back when I feel slighted, but I would never ever intentionally insult or hurt someone without provocation.

Except buffetgirl, that nasty, horrible, witch. I cannot believe you even posted such a thing! You should be banned immediately! ;)

I could post more - a lot more in fact - however I won't other than to say . . excellent post Buffettgirl!

BTW - my favorite Buffett tune - One Particular Harbor . . . .

LMAO! Is that why you always have stars by your posts? I was wondering about that!!

Wow...I had no idea people did this!! I noticed the star rating but never paid much attention to them. Honestly, knowing someone rated a certain thread as a one star wouldn't affect whether or not I want to open and read it...this does seem like a pretty useless feature.

LOL!! That is really thoughtful of you, Laura! :D

I noticed that every thread you post someone gives a 1-star rating, no matter what the subject. I guess it says more about the person who gives that 1-star-rating than about you or your thread IMO.

Very true what you said, Robin! Sometimes however the please don't flame me statement is a little overused. People will disagree and I think that is fine and to be expected. If people disagreeing with me would cause me anxiety attacks I probably should refrain from posting on that particular subject that I think may cause disagreements among people. Now you can flame me :eek:

IMO- it's like everything else in life,if you don't like it, don't read, listen, answer, etc. there are times for opinions and times when you keep them to yourself...IMO!

Almost like posters are afraid that any posting of an opinion (like "I don't like chocolate") will get flamed (or maybe they don't understand that 'flaming' is not just expressing an opposing view).

So how many of us just started clicking on all of LauraMax's threads and giving them 5 stars? I'd never even noticed before!

I think if you are going to be mean enough to put the rating it should automatically have your name posted under it. People are not so ballzy when they have to say it to your face.

I posted a question the other day about something in the news and low and behold, soon afterward, it had a one star rating!!! But somewhere along the line it bumped up to three:eek:!

I have to admit, the one star made me feel bad. I was trying to see what everyone else's opinion was and that's all.

I agree - do away with the rating system or take away the anonymous feature.

I'm off to give all of LauraMaxs' posts 5 stars.......

I think I may have given you the bump.
I don't often use the star rating, but when I see threads unfairly rated 1-star, I sometimes rate them 5, just to be onery.
