Pentagenarians & Beyond: W/B 6/18

Good morning,

Yesterday I did Live Quick Fix Cardio. A good fast cardio workout, with some modifications. My internet connection got a little wonky and froze a few times, which made me have to stop and try to find where I left off. That messed up my heart rate/calorie burn but otherwise a keeper. Keegan is better. He must have eaten something he shouldn;t have. Dogs!!

Valerie, I am going to stress that John carry an epi pen....especially since he spends a lot of time outdoors when fishing etc. Your yard work definitely counts as a workout. The bees are certainly looking for you this year!

Carolyn, mountain climbers are really hard for me too. In the live workout I did yesterday, Cathe recommends doing them with the high step topper under your hands. She said it makes them easier. I discovered that a while ago, and actually use my Firm wooded high step, which is about 14 inches high. I think I get just as much from them with this, without any pain or difficulty. I tried Pledge on one of the disks and boy, what a difference! I use them on puzzle mats and they were not very slippery at all until I used the Pledge.

Diane Sue, Hope your SIL does ok. Good that your daughter got him to get that X-ray. That sounds like a good workout..Funny how the guy sweats with weight work, but not cardio...strange. Thanks for posting about KCM's new Raw workout. Where do you find this info? I check out her regular website page forum, and it looks like people are not posting there much anymore. She has ads and info for DVD's that have been out for months.

Judy, I think my problem with the new DVD's is not the DVD's themselves so much, but getting out Tower, and trying to work with ion my slanted basement floor. I have to put a block of wood under one side to make it level, and moving it around means readjusting the wood piece each time.

Lori, yes, did the Metabolic Live and really liked it a lot. It was the toughest Metabolic that Cathe has done, at least for me. I remember those underarm pads. My Mom used to use them whenever she wore a dress...she had that same sweating problem.

A rest day for me today, got home late from class last night, and I have a class at noon today with Kylee....

Take care,

Deb, i am glad Keegan is doing better. I have to warch Gertie when we have family meals and sometimes she will still get sick. The little ones drop cake and food Gertie should not eat. She will promptly lay under where they are eating. Sometimes I send her outside, Sunday night when I went upstairs I found DevilDog chunks on the stairs from the 3 year old. She eats crayons when they drop them as well. She was fine this time though. I try to make her go lie in her doggie bed. I usually catch the Raw workouts on Facebook. I think it was last night when i was checking facebook again and saw the workout and it said posted 16 hours ago. So I figured she must have done it yesterday morning. I check her website too, but i think most go to her facebook page. I find that her website page is good for times and premixes and workout log sheets along with ordering . BTW i baked for fathers day. The Devil Dogs are not sold here and my husband ordered some gor 10 dollars special for our daughter in law. I knew it was the littlest grandchild that dropped because he kept peeking over the top of the table and pointing at the box till she gave him half of one. I dont think he liked it much because I found the last chunk on the kitchen counter.

Edited to add that I checked and this is the same Upper that was posted before on KCM raw. I am wondering if she is waiting till she gets some help since she was looking for some suggestions on facebook.

I hadn't thought about those pads.. 'dress shields" in ages. used to have them too. so many garments weren't washable and needed dry cleaning, and that extended wearing dresses to several times. as I remember, deodorant was available but antiperspirants didn't work too well. I sweat a little but nothing like I see others do. I overheat quickly in hot climates even if its dry heat and for cardio more than weight work. I definitely don't sweat enough to cool myself so always careful about heat. no saunas or hot yoga for me, I would get heatstroke! even in hot and humid I don't perspire much.

Bees are just flying from flower to flower or to a hive. bicycling takes you on a paved path with tons of plants growing on either side. when you cover 25 miles, riding a bike crosses the center of the bee 'commute" path for a long distance. I ran into them.... they were not seeking me out. it's not like they were attracted to me , I just rode thru their flight path. I spend a lot of time in our garden with lots of bees and never been stung there. Deb, walking is less likely to be a problem because you're going slowly . bees will avoid you, and you will avoid them. Still, if I were allergic I would definitely carry an epi pen for riding. I hit another bee yesterday

we have the older tower. use it a lot. DH uses it more than I do because he has some heavy plates on it, and it takes a long time to unload them and reload with less weight. I used it mostly for STS but DH wasn't using it then, so it was always ready to go. now it's a chore to change it up. takes too much time. . we slide a weight bench underneath it, and I use that a lot.

Today I did Total Body Giant Sets. My workout time was 60 minutes with 293 calories burned. Average heart rate was 107 and maximum heart rate was 138.

Deb, I have used the high step topper for mountain climbers. It definitely makes them easier, but I didn't think of it yesterday. Today I used it with side lunge pickups to avoid having to go down so low in the lunge.

Hello to everyone and I hope you have a wonderful day.

This morning I started with Hardcore Extreme and clicked the wrong workout, Circuit Intervals stopping at the first weight segment, 18 minutes, 121 calories, heart rate average 133/165 max. I switched to the Hi/Lo Intervals which is the one that I intended to do and skipped the warm up, 66 minutes, 138/177 heart rate, 423 calories. This had me doing I Max combo 2 twice, but I was okay with that. I used the rebounder for some of the Kick Max jumping at the end. I wanted to do Ripped and Chiseled Extremely Ripped tomorrow so did not want weights today. Total time was 84 minutes and calories burned 544, 8409 steps. I think the Jari Love workout yesterday may have had the cardio portion filmed separately from the weights. I had to scramble each time to because they would already be starting and the man would already be pedaling the bike. Still his shirt was wet during weights and never wet on the spin bike. Also, Jari's Bootcamp workout can be used as abs only, weights only, cardio only. And it is also chaptered where you can do one cardio and strength section, which I have done as an add on before to hit a certain body part area.

Valerie, we used to till our children that if you stay calm the bees won't bother you. We were working in the yard one time and told that to my daughter and a bee came right at her and stung her when she was just standing there. I never told them that again. I have a wasp that is trying to nest under the wood on the house by the trashcans. I keep trying to get it with wasp spray. Now I can't find what I did with that can. It dives at me every time I go to the trash can.

Carolyn, I have used my Iron Gym pull up/ push up bar when doing mountain climbers before. It definitely feels better on the wrists for some of those moves.

Good evening ladies,

This morning I started with the BBS rotation. A dance cardio followed up with an upper workout. This upper workout is amazing. I use 5 and 3lb weights and wow my arms were burning. Like I have said many times before it really does amaze me when done right how light weights can completely fatigue you! Total time was 40 mins/264 cal. Tonight I fit in my SB rotation which was Barre Hiit and I followed up with her Streaming Upper Body Bounce. This one has the pull ups on the bar. A favorite of mine. Time was 35 mins/206 cal.

My son received interesting news the other day. His dad told him he (my son) has a 46 year old brother! When his dad was young he hooked up with a girl who became pregnant. He tried to do the right thing, he was 18 at the time, but the girl said it wasn't his and then gave the baby up for adoption. While we were married he always wondered if it was his and we discussed it a few times over the years. Well the baby was his! They went for dna testing and it was spot on. My son's dad is really thrilled about this and my son thinks it is pretty cool also. The resemblance is uncanny because it is all so new. My son and his Dad and new brother all met up on Father's day which was really nice. His adoptive parents passed away a few years ago which made him want to reach out to his biological parents. I guess the mother is a little loopy and he wants nothing to do with her. I am happy he found his biological family and looking forward to him being a part of my son's life.

Deb...that is a great little workout. Funny you used the word "wonky". For some reason I have used it a few times lately and have no idea why! Glad you thought the recent Live was a tough one. I thought the same thing and really felt it the next day. Glad Keegan is better.

Diane Sue...I am glad you posted the Raw workout was not new. I was online looking for it this morning and could not find a new workout. I assumed it was because of lack of coffee. Good to know it was not there after all. Lol! I used to love love love the original Imax. I remember the moment when I was actually able to get thru it with no modifications. I was so proud of myself! At the time I was not in a group forum like this and had no one to tell. My friends could have cared less! I love how we can talk about our workouts and accomplishments and how we encourage eachother when needed. I love using the rebounder for a non rebounding workout. Really mixes things up a bit. Somedays you just do not want all that impact.

Caroyln...usually when I do mountain climbers I do them standing up. When I did T25 Shaun did these a couple of times so that is what I do. Really bothers my shoulder when I do them on the floor. And I just do not like them!

Valerie...do they even still make dress shields? I guess they do. My girlfriend would help me get dress before each game. We had to use safety pins to really secure them since I was a cheerleader and my arms were everywhere! I am looking forward to really using my tower. Since my son moved back it has been dismantled waiting to be used.

Have a great night all!

Lori, I use the rebounder often for some of the higher impact moves. I chose that particular workout because it mixed the low impact with the high impact intervals. I forgot about the Kick Max segment. That one has a lot of jumping. So, I did the tuck jumps and and some of the jack moves on it. I realized after looking at the Jari Love workout that it has more jumping in it. I may be pulling out the rebounder tomorrow when I do Extremely Ripped and Chiseled. I don't mind some jumping, but I know there is a point where it becomes too much. Light weights can be very effective. I use lighter weights than I normally would when I do Jari's workouts. When they are all picking up 5#, I know it is going to be a tough segment.
That is wonderful that things worked out and your son is happy about meeting his brother. I bet it was an emotional father's day for sure. I am looking forward to using my Fit Tower. I keep taking it down when the grandchildren are here, but worry that may not be the best thing for it. I need to just make them stay off it. I have had them climb up on top of it. They climb up my 100# heavy bag too and my husband scolded them. I am afraid the stand will tip or the bag will break. It is a huge stand that takes up a whole corner of the room with a speed bag on it as well.

a slacker today, I did the warm up to high reps, the Ab section, and a set of pushups. probably 15 min total. I had a busy day and that was the last minute squeeze. will do better tomorrow.

Good morning,

No workout yesterday, took a rest day.

Diane Sue, are those Devil Dogs the ones you can buy in the grocery store or is that what you baked? Our dogs would eat anything that dropped on the floor but I am pretty sure they would not eat crayons. I need to go over to KCM's FB page and see what she is doing...help with what? I have gone there but never see a post about the YouTube videos.

Valerie, it makes sense why you would run into bees frequently, with the mileage you do. I am sure with all that you do, you are definitely not a "slacker"!

Carolyn, I didn't think of using the topper for side lunges where you pick up the weight...good idea!

Lori, wow that is some news about your son discovering he has a brother! It's good that he is open to that and that he, his father and new brother can have a nice relationship. I think I have picked up "wonky" maybe from watching so many British TV shows. :). How do you do mountain climbers standing up?

Not sure what is up for today...maybe an upper body workout...or total body... Agility class tonight..

Take care,

Hi Everyone,

Yesterday I did a longer indoor ride, 85 minutes and 28 miles. I'm hoping we can get outside a little this summer so I need to get some miles on my legs. Today I am starting a new program called Foundation Training. It will be an add on to my other workouts and I will probably be doing it 2-3 times a week. It was recommended by a friend on MFP to help with my on going low back issue. It has gotten better, but I noticed it was flaring up a little during my week of Cathe Live. This is the program:

https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00IU22HTM/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o01_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

Deb-Live Quick Fix Cardio is a good one. I previewed it last week and put it on my Live to-do list. I'm glad Keegan is better. I'm going to have to try pledge on my gliding discs. It would be great if I could get them to work better on the puzzle mats.

Diane Sue-I think I will try a Jari Love workout today since I didn't do weights yesterday. I might try one of the shorter ones since it will be my first time.

Lori-That is really neat about your son's brother. I was wondering how you do mountain climbers standing up too. I also use the word "wonky". I think I picked it up from Chris.

Hi to Carolyn, Valerie & Caitlin,

Judy

Today I did Jari Love's Extremely Ripped and Chiseled, 84 minutes(78 actual minutes) 395 calories, heart rate 108 avg/ max 161. There was only jumping in one segment of the lower body. I liked this better than I remember. The first half or workout is legs and back and the second half is the rest of upper and abs. This one sure has the lactic acid build up. I kept dropping weight. I did most with the higher weight increment they used 8-10#, but on some of the shoulder stuff I dropped the weight after starting to 5's. Legs there was one segment that I used 15's where they were doing 12's. I have my grandson here today. I stopped for a bit when he came in with his sister.

Valerie, you are not a slacker. Once in awhile we just need the break when we are busy.

Deb, I will go see if I can find the post. The Devil Dogs are the ones purchased at the stores. They do not sell them here. My husband ordered them through Amazon for 9.99 :O Anytime the children drop crayons Gertie eats them. I have not had a dog that wouldn't eat crayons. Mudd used to eat moon dough but not the playdoh. We always had to watch that. It never seemed like it would be safe even if it is non toxic. Just that fact that it felt like soft foam in texture. Usually Kelly's youtube workouts show up on my facebook feed. One of my daughters is always using the word wonky.

Judy, the foundation training looks good. You are not the first person that I have read posts from that has had some flare ups when doing the live workouts. Jari's workouts generally have a full workout or two shorter ones so that would be a good start.

think we will mt bike today so I will try to get beyond the slacker posture. that was a decent mini workout for the 15 minutes I ended up with.

I should have planned my day better. DH and I went shopping after dropping our truck off for service. normal service, plus some critter chewed a baseball sized hole thru the bottom of the windshield washer container, so it won't hold fluid. very heavy duty plastic. this will be expensive to replace since it's not easily accessible. We had several heavy duty plastic containers chewed thru this winter, non of them containing any kind of food product. I mean, windshield washer fluid? how tasty can you get?
then hit Target, Best buy, Costco. later ended up on the phone a long time with my sister trying to shop for her. it is so ridiculous but she is shopping for used clothes... jeans & T's, using me to look online, order the stuff and send it to her on her credit card. it takes so long. I haven't seen her in years but she wears a 20 so not a load of places to shop. Jeans are hard to find apparently. along with t shirts. remember she can't drive so has to bus or walk. I have thought about a million times about buying her a computer but the mere thought of trying teach her over the phone is just too awful to contemplate. she is totally non computer literate, not good with electronics at all, and it would be starting from scratch. of course her monthly cable bill would go up too. I am going to ask her sizes and just buy her some underwear, socks and bras. looking on amazon I found a plus size company that was not expensive and then at least shipping is (usually) free.

Lori I don't like mt climbers much, but also want to know how you do them standing up. I haven't looked for a dress shield since about 1970 so no idea if anyone makes them anymore. wow a unknown brother!. that could be a challenge.. hope that all goes smoothly. anytime cathe gets 5's for side raises, I know there will be partials in there somewhere. I start with holding steady for the time allotment and then try to move into partials. burns!.
I agree, using a bench topper for side work is a great idea. I tend to fall over and a little easier might make them more doable.
A Devil dog is nothing I have heard of. is a variation on a hot dog?

Valerie, a Devil dog is devils food cake with some sort of fake cream product in the middle. I don't like them. They are like the Hostess Suzy Q's which are a bit different since they are not shaped like a hot dog shape. My three year old grandson begged for the half of one he got and I don't think he cared for it because pieces were all over the place. But, it is one of my daughter in law's favorite things and apparently she tries to get out of state family that has access to bring some with them when they visit. I have seen them mentioned here on the forums in the past. I am just not one of those people that has a love for them so they are not a problem for me. I don't care much for cake to begin with.

Today I did Cardio Supersets and I remembered to use the mini Step for the mountain climbers. I don't like them either, but can do them okay when I go slowly. The Low Impact Series had a lot of mountain climbers, squat thrusts, and burpees.

Lori, I had the same question as everyone else--how do you do mountain climbers standing up? That is wonderful news for your son and his father. That must have been a very emotional Father's Day meeting.

Diane Sue, I'm glad that you explained what a devil dog is--I had never heard of them.

Valerie, there is no way that you can be called a slacker with all the work that you do!

Judy, I hope you like the Jari Love workout. The Foundation program looks interesting. Is it designed to help you with form for various exercises?

Hello to Deb and Caitlin.

Carolyn, I think some of those moves are as hard if not harder on the knees going down and getting up as well as hard on the back, as doing high impact. Yes, they do get the heart rate up and that is what they are used for, but not necessarily the safest moves to do. They need to be done carefully. I had never seen a Devil Dog till my husband purchased these , but had heard of them and knew what they were.

Deb, here is what Kelly Coffey said on her facebook page. June 15 Looking for a company that can help me with tech savvy business: You Tube, mobile apps, etc...
Also she just posted that a new Raw workout is coming soon to you tube and a bit of video one her facebook. I don't see it on You tube yet and I do not now what it will be yet. She says something about a medicine ball on the clip.

Ha.... I thought sure it was going to be a hot dog with red devil hot sauce!. I used to like twinkies and cupcakes when I was a kid. I didn't realize they still made those. more later.

later....we did about 2 hours of mt biking. I used my new monitor and on uphills I am getting up to upper 130's to mid 140's heart rate which is where I want it. my resting hearty rate is around 60. I am not someone who can get to high numbers. 160 is about max for me.
You would not believe the windshield washer container. it is totally chewed. two big holes in the bottom. DH had the dealer save it for us. Hilarious except that it cost us about $200 to get it replaced. Not easily accessible. we will assume mice did it since that is all we ever found. I read that some wiring and plastic is using soy as a part of it instead of all petroleum products. so that's why mice will eat it.

oh Lori, don't let him hurt himself!! Oh to be a fly on the wall and watch the burnout....

Good evening ladies,

Today was a fun workout day. Loved all my workouts. This morning was a 11 min BBS Tramp workout (they really do call them this) followed up with SB's lower body combo target 23m. I then did a 10 min BBS jumprope using my jumpsport. Tonight was a BBS lower and upper. Each were approx 10 mins. I followed up with a SB advanced bounce, 21m. Total for the day 84mins/516 cal. The upper BBS really exhausted me as they usually do. I was explaining to my husband about how the workout was burning my arms (he was in the next room watching). He laughed that I was only using 4lbs. He has taken me up on a challenge. Told him he needed to use at least 8 to 10lbs. Figured this makes sense since he is 6'1". Told him he was going to cry like a baby!!! He is doing this tomorrow night so I will fill you in!! I can't wait.

I found this on YouTube. I do use light weights but you can choose not to. If you skip thru the first 2 mins of the video she gets to the actual mountain climber pace. It is easier on the shoulders for me and I still feel worked.

Diane Sue...I think I read you have done T25. Do you remember the standing mountain climbers? This was the first time I had heard of them and completely forgot about them until recently when a mountain climber came up in a workout. I sighed and then thought of T25. I love devil dogs!!! Have not had one in years. Loved them frozen. I saw the post from Kelly too, going to look after this to see if it is up on youtube.

Valerie and slacker should never be used together! Great you got a 15 min workout in! Somedays that is all I have time for. Very nice of you to shop for your sister.

Carolyn...I use a 4 inch platform for burbees and pushups. Helps my shoulders. Was using for mountain climbers until I remembered the standing ones. Now that is the only way I do them. I know it is really a completely different exercise but I feel it in my arms, shoulders, core, (especially when using light weights) and legs, so why not!

Judy...sounds like a great addition to your workout regimen. The weather has been horrible this Spring in NE. Now that Summer has officially started hoping it improves.

Deb...Nick is really excited about his new brother and thinking they will have a great relationship. Sounds like we all are using wonky!!!

Have a great night all!

Hello to all the wonderful ladies. I gained about five pounds, and I need at least five more. I think I will start Cardio tomorrow slowly, because when I do it, I am hungrier. Oh, I saw the thread on reading, and Frank and I have a wonderful library here, and we are going there soon.

This is rather funny, but I subscribed to a You Tube group for ladies our age, and it is recommended that we do very gentle Yoga. I would go crazy just doing that. Frank joined me walking today for close to an hour.

Valerie, funny what your image of a Devil Dog is. It makes sense though. I used to love Twinkies, now that filling in all of that stuff does not taste good at all to me. It is funny how our tastes change. Like Lori , said, it is really nice for you to help your sister with her clothes shopping.

Lori, great workout today. I have done that mountain climber move, but don't remember it being called that. I probably just thought it was one of those names an instructor gave his/her move. Tony Horton always had interesting names for moves that would be called something else by other instructors. I don't have all of T25. I just have the Gamma set. That move may be in there though. Funny, my daughter in law says the Devil Dogs are best eaten frozen. It will be interesting to see how your husband does with the heavier weights :) Moving through a lot of reps and a faster pace makes a huge difference in how the weights feel. I have had my muscles on fire doing these Jari Love workouts. I haven't felt that much lactic acid build up in quite some time. It is a nice (in some sort of masochistic way) change.

Caitlin, I am glad to hear that you were able to put some weight back on. I could not do just yoga as my only workouts. There are other types of yoga though that are more active and strength based. budokon comes to mind. It takes some skill and work to move through the poses with some sort of grace.
