Pentagenarians & Beyond: W/B 6/18

Lori, that is great that you can get off early through the summer. It will make it much nicer on the weekends. I saw that Kelly is working on new dvds. One was a kettlebell and kickboxing workout. I think there was a total body. Anyway there was a picture of her and the other ladies and information about their preparing to film. Maybe she has a lot going on at once. But, then she did say coming soon, right? I checked this morning and will check again tomorrow morning. I was hoping to be able to maybe download the workouts so I could do one, but still nothing back on a code yet.

Diane sue I use Eating Well a lot. I get the magazine but the email reminders come daily and are very useful. they recycle previous recipes. reminds you of things you may have forgotten about, or never made though you intended to. I used to use Cooking Light Mag too, but they made some format changes a few years ago and I don't use it much anymore. Dumbed it down and started using pre packaged junk more often.

I liked a lot of things EW did with squash, most of them savory, or spicy. I don't like it sweetened unless it's a dessert. I get the dried Montmorency cherries at Costco. they are more tart and have a nice texture. dried cranberries are too sweet for me most of the time.

Good morning,

A nice day yesterday, met my friend for lunch. John is away fishing, so it was just me and the dogs last night. (and Fritz of course!).

Diane Sue, you have a lot of birthday celebrations! Great that you are getting close to finishing the staining etc. I did a Google search on foods that are hard to digest, and there are many, however, none of the articles mention heartburn, only diarrhea, bloating etc. Is it Kelly's FB page where she posts all the info on workouts? I am probably the only one that feels this way, but it was a lot simpler when people like Cathe and Kelly just had their web site forums, and all info was in one place. I hate having to jump around to look for information like new DVD's etc.

Carolyn, you had one of "those days" that I have, when you just don't feel like doing a workout. Good that you rested and didn't aggravate any place that was already sore. Unfortunately, mine are multiple days at a time, not just one.

Valerie, I have never had roasted squash..isn't it tough to cut up into smaller pieces? Nice to see a grouse and her hatchlings, glad she got across the road safely! I think Trader Joe's has unsweetened cranberries...

Lori, that's great that your boss has given you an alternate way to use up vacation time.

Agility class this morning....hope everyone is having a good weekend...

Take care,

Deb I use roasted squash in cool seasons. There are lots of different ways to prepare . I usually peel it and then chop into one inch chunks so they roast evenly. I have a heavy duty peeler. You can microwave to soften it a little. I sometimes slice the peel off with a knife or cleaver We grow butternuts ourselves, my favorite, a bit of work but I often do the whole thing at once and bag it and roast as needed.

ETA I am writing this after diane sue posted. got interrupted earlier.

I've read that people microwave it briefly to make the outer skin softer. I keep forgetting to try that. our home grown ones don't always fit. I use a cleaver to cut thru the squash. take off top and bottom so it sits better, then a bunch of ways. sometimes I slice it into rounds and trim the skin off with a knife. a chef knife, a heavy duty one, sometimes the cleaver, to trim the skin off. I use a peeler on the rounder parts. it's not easy, but I love squash!. I also bought precut squash once and it was absolutely awful. throw away awful. If I don't want to do it all, I'll take off a couple rounds from the straight part, plastic wrap the end and refrigerate it. once you've handled it a lot it will spoil so I use it in a week at the most. I cut into 1 inch chinks and roast with a little olive oil and maybe onion. not all squash cooks well this way. some kinds get mushy and lose shape, but butternuts work great roasted in pieces.
anyway, I am done with it until next fall. I eat a lot of it in season.

I still have not received a download code. I think that they said something about offices closed on weekends, so I am probably not going to be able to download. :( The main reason I like to get the downloads is so I can use them while waiting on the dvds to get here. Maybe I will do kickboxing today. I am sore from yesterday's Jari workout.

Deb, I usually always see Kelly on Facebook. I follow her on Instagram as well which is basically the same picture posts she has on facebook. I imagine they link together because I see a lot like that. I don't use my facebook to hook up to Instagram and have never posted anything on Instagram. It saw mainly so I could follow fitness and recipe stuff. I look at pictures of food :) I did find it more convenient to just go to the website and get emails when new workouts were coming. I do not like it that we have all been forced to use facebook for almost everything. I also think it is a bit odd that when I get stuff from Dr Axe site that I get messenger messages on my facebook about my orders etc.. I did not give them my facebook info.

Valerie, I have such a hard time cutting up butternut squash. I though I had purchased a good knife set a couple of years ago and broke off the blade of one of them trying to pull it out of the squash. It was a solid one piece knife. No separate handle. I went out and purchased another knife that was similar to replace it. I always cut it and roast then peel and chop it up. I just bought already cubed butternut squash this last time , which does not taste as good.

Hello Everyone,
Today I did Ramped Up Upper Body. I like working one side at a time for the back the way that it is done in this workout. Total time was 56 minutes and 192 calories. Average heart rate was 101 and maximum heart rate was 135.

Diane Sue, doing different types of workouts increases my daily step count. Of course, so does housework! I did some housework after my workout and I am already at 7000 steps.

Butternut squash is hard to peel but I have gotten better. I use a method similar to Valerie's. I hate the precut and packaged squash. It has a terrible taste.

It's another rainy gray day so I plan to do some reading this afternoon. Have a great day today.

Today I did Rapid Fire 4 with Susan's favorite mix that alternates the boxing segments and the kickboxing segments and finishes off with the core, 74 minutes, 459 calories. Heart Rate average 123/max 154. I usually have a bit lower heart rate and calorie burn on this mix than the one that does all the boxing then all the kickboxing segments that really kick it up. Not a lot different, but I seem to generally lose about 40-50 calories in the burn. I felt that I needed some extra stretching today and added 21 Day Fix Extreme Yoga, 29 minutes, 52 calories. Total time was 1 hour 41 minutes, calories 511, 5,649 steps. I wore my 1 pound gloves. 5's for the abs. I ran to the post office awhile ago and had a weird experience. There was no one there, I just went into the lobby to mail forms that needed to get out asap for our insurance changes since I have barely over 30 days left. When I got in the car and started it a person with an orange hoodie covering their face pulled up behind my car and sat there. I was waiting for them to move on or park and finally a mail truck pulled out of the back and the person went on out. My husband says they were probably getting ready to do something. He said if I had to when blocked I should just drive up over the side walk if that is the only way I can get out. Why is it that it has gotten so unsafe out there just for small routine tasks?

Carolyn, when I do housework and shopping at someplace like Walmart Supercenter I increase a lot of steps. Staining and varnishing the last few days did not get many steps. I was surprised when I still got over 10,000. Although I have had to make trips out to the store several times. I bought a spaghettis squash thinking of using it with the beef recipe. They are so pale and almost green. I hope it is okay. The lady that rang it up said at first she thought it was a honeydew melon. I may be sorry. I still have watermelon and veggies I need to get cleaned and chopped up today before I go back to staining woodwork. Any vegetable or salad pre packaged tastes bad. When I get the bags of salad when I want a quick salad, I find it helps to rinse it really well so it doesn't have that almost moldy taste to it. I have to wash my head of kale and chop it up.

I ended up downloadling the new workouts. I had a free moment so went for it. Did not take long at all. I am planning to do the bootcamp one tomorrow.

Deb...I think you will like these workouts. I think they look great. Hope John had fun fishing. When does he come home?

This morning I managed to fit in a workout before we left for our errands. I did the new Live workout Lift It Hiit It and I loved it! Flew by.

Diane Sue...hope you get the code soon to download. Keeping my fingers crossed for Monday. I reviewed all the workouts and they look really good. Nothing crazy advanced high impact.

It poured here earlier but this afternoon/evening has been beautiful. We are about to have a fire and enjoy the night.

Hi to all!!!

Lori, I am glad that the new workouts do not look crazy with impact. The thing is when I read about the code and they said let them know before the weekend because they would no be in the office, I hurried and let them know. I watched all day Friday for a code and just got the message that she had to talk to the technicians and not to worry. I know I will get it, it was just disappointing. I always check them out as I download too. I wish we had some rain. It spit at us a little last night but that was it. Everything is looking wilted. I keep going out and watering the plants. Did you get your pool set up?

I made the ragout recipe with the leftover roast. I didn't add the recipes to t he Italian roast recipe so while I roasted the butternut squash I roasted a potato cubed and some onion and added some carrot shreds. I used this in the ragout. It is yummy. I also roasted that spaghetti squash but it was too watery and mushy and definitely was a mistake purchasing it. I used some of the roasted butternut squash with the ragout instead.
