Pentagenarians & Beyond: W/B 6/18

Good morning,

No workout yesterday, I had a bad day with heartburn. I think broccoli is one of my trigger foods....of course, its my favorite vegetable. :(.

Judy, those workouts look good. I hope they help your back. The Pledge made a big difference. Puzzle mats are funny...not like a regular floor where the covers for the disks work well, or a rug, where the uncovered disks work well. Kind of in the middle...the Pledge makes a difference. What do you think it is about the Live workouts that cause a flare up with your back?

Diane Sue, funny, I have seen Devil Dogs in the stores forever, but have never tried them. I figured they were just another version of Hostess Cupcakes ( which I used to get all the time when I was young). A KCM with a medicine ball could be interesting.

Valerie, that is really nice that you do that for your sister. I don't think it would be beneficial for either of you to try to "teach" her at this point to use a computer, especially over the phone. It sounds like even hands on right with her would be a challenge.

Lori, I can't wait either to see how Bob does with those 8 pound weights! You are cruel....LOL :). Thanks for posting the link...that is something I am going to keep in mind the next time mountain climbers are in a workout.

Caitlin, good for you on gaining the weight. It's nice that have a nice library. I use ours all the time.

I have to buy a birthday present for my SIL today, her birthday is tomorrow…otherwise, nothing but yard and house work for me.

Take care,

Hi Everyone,

Yesterday I did 15 minutes of foundation training and then I did my first Jari Love workout, Ripped in 6. I think the foundation training is going to help me with my low back. I liked the Jari Love workout too. I will be adding her workouts into my schedule more often.

Deb-I'm sorry about your heartburn :( Broccoli is definitely a trigger food for me.
I think the pace of the lower body moves in the Live workouts is what is triggering my low back issues. Even though Cathe always says to go at your own pace, I try to keep up with her pace. I think I'm going to have to either use much lighter weight or do the lower body reps slower. I get caught up in the momentum of the Live workouts more than the DVD workouts, where I'm more likely to pause if I feel uncomfortable with a move.

Diane Sue-for the Jari Love workout I used 5-8 lbs for most of the moves. I felt like I could have gone a little heavier for the lower body moves, but I didn't have any back issues, so maybe I was using the best weight for now. I liked how she did 6 sets of everything, with a short recovery move between sets. I also liked the countdown timer on the screen. I'll try a longer one next week.

Carolyn- Yes, I think the foundation program will help me with form, mainly for lower body exercises. My problem was that I put too much strain on my low back muscles because I wasn't using my glutes enough during squats and deadlifts. My low back has improved a lot over the past couple of years, from stretching, yoga, and some exercises I got in physical therapy, but doing lower body moves too fast and with too much weight is causing them to flair up again.

Valerie-Great job on the mountain biking!

Lori-Thanks for the youtube video! I'm going to start doing mountain climbers that way too.

Caitlin-that is funny about only doing gentle yoga. I would go crazy too if that was all I did.

Judy

Today I did Athletic Training using one set of risers instead of two as Cathe was using. My workout time was 57 minutes with 366 calories burned. Average heart rate was 124 and maximum heart rate was 160.

Judy I looked up a YouTube video for Foundation Training and understand it better. I like what I saw and I see how it would help. I agree with you about the speed of the movements during Live workouts. I can easily pause a dvd if I need more time but it's harder for me to do that with the laptop.

Lori, thanks for the video on standing mountain climbers. I've seen Shaun T do those but didn't realize that it was a version of mountain climbers. My problem with them and the other floor movements is getting down to the floor and getting up again. It's hard on my knees and makes me dizzy after I do it a few times.

Deb, that's too bad about broccoli being a trigger food. Is it raw broccoli or both raw and cooked?

Diane Sue, I use to make a chocolate layer cake that is similar to the devil dogs. It's a Southern Living recipe called Perfect Chocolate Cake. It has whipped cream filling between the layers and chocolate frosting on top. I haven't thought of that one in years.

Hello to Valerie and Caitlin.

Today I did I Max 2, 55 minutes, 425 calories, average heart rate 147/ max 188. I then did a youtube Anita champion, rebounding abdominal/ab workout and added 3 minutes of bouncing to it. I bounced a bit when she was talking, 30 minutes, 159 calories, HR 115/167. This was tough. Who knew you could sit on the rebounder and bounce in all different moves on your gluteus maximus and really get the heart rate up? I had to take breaks or let my feet touch the floor a bit. I think my urban rebounder is not as springy as her Bellicon which made it difficult. I kind of liked the change and could definitely feel it in my abs. Total time was 85 minutes, 584 calories, 7,830 steps.

Deb, that is too bad about the broccoli since that is one of the best veggies to eat. Was it cooked? Wondering if cooked versus raw would make a difference. I checked this morning and that raw workout is not posted yet.

Judy, Jari has timers on all her workouts. I like when I see that last 30 second countdown in the corner of some of them. She does the around 6 sets in a lot of her workouts before moving to the next. When I am hoping for a shorter one due to fatigue, it just keeps going. They are good workouts.

Carolyn, we check in around the same time a lot :) When I make chocolate cakes fpr a lot of the family gatherings I have two different recipes I use and always a chocolate pound cake recipe for the cake since I think it is better texture. One I use a frosting that uses bittersweet chocolate and whipping cream top and filling. They other I use light whipped topping(used to be cool whip but now I purchase Tru Whip which is less artificial ingredients) with cream cheese softened and folded in and grated dark chocolate on top, chocolate chips added to the cake. I put the cream cheese topping in as the filling but no chocolate grated. Sometimes I drizzle melted chocolate over the top. Funny thing is I don't eat the cake. I have tasted it. The family loves it though and ask me to make them for their special occasions.

Lori thanks for the clip on standing mt climbers. what a great idea. doesn't look especially easy but sometimes an alternative is needed... who knows? maybe you don't have a mat handy. always good to have another back up technique.

we hiked this morning. nice one and only 3 1/2 hours. bit of a drive. lots of flowers, and also snow. could not get to the parking lot but it was mostly snow free after. saw a deer and a spotted fawn. they were running down the road in front of us. finally... the mother turned uphill, but the baby kept going on the road. yipes, not good! we stopped and waited, and sure enough, a couple seconds of running alone and the fawn stopped ran back toward us. turned up the hill after mom. I get so mad when they chew up my plants but I still love to see them.

Since I didn't have kids, I have not looked for Hostess type baked stuff since probably 1960. I don't remember seeing it in stores but I never looked for them.
I came across a recipe for an angel food cake baked in a large flat pan, then rolled up with sweetened whipped cream and berries. I usually would not use a cake mix except ( maybe) for an angel food cake. anyone made an angel food cake in the last few years? I remember I didn't like mixes because they tasted too salty but that was long ago. can anyone recommend a brand?

Deb bummer on the broccoli... Judy, you too. I love the stuff. our harvest is decent this year, not a record but OK after a slow start. do other things in the same vegie family bother also, like cauliflower, cabage, kale?
Deb, the first thing people say to me is "why don't you just buy her a computer". I could, but it would be a nightmare. she likes to talk and complain and she calls often enough as it is. I'm not sure I could "teach" anyone over the phone anyway. I never had formal training either and learned by trail and error. it gets harder to do things all the time thought without one. everyone assumes you have access somehow.

Valerie, if I use cake mixes I generally buy Duncan Hines over Betty Crocker. They usually have better flavor and texture. I usually make angel food cake from scratch. I have a favorite coconut one and I have made chocolate angel food cake. I haven't done it in awhile and it generally requires a dozen egg whites. I think the package brands have an odd flavor to them.
I used to try to help my Dad over the phone with his computer. Bless his heart, he would get so frustrated that he would just go get another computer. My brothers and I would visit and try to organize things and and get it working right for him. My husband helped and I had a cousin that lived near him that would help once in awhile. I think each time he got a new one there was more new stuff and he would get so confused.
I saw a deer lying on the side of the main road going out of our street. Being in the city, you would think there wouldn't be as many. From what I have read though, they spend time around the lake above us and in the woods by us and then travel several miles at night back to the nature center which now has some apartments and buildings all around the area. I kind of feel sorry for them. My husband worked over night once and said he came in at 4 am and saw a group of them when he turned into our neighborhood. Farmers do not appreciate them too much.
Yes, they expect everyone to have a computer now. Even Social Security it is expected that people will be handling it online. I accidentally made mine online only which I had not intended to do. I needed a copy for my income tax and had not received one in the mail. I guess I clicked one of those sneaky boxes to make it always online. So now I have to remember to change my password every 6 months. I find it annoying and they are working on security with it. I don't like giving out all of my information. It seems like it is collected everywhere now. I would guess those that are have no computer are lucky because their privacy is still mostly intact.

I need to do something with my asparagus and butternut squash I purchased a week ago or it is going to go bad. I haven't came up with a recipe yet. For some reason I had thought I was going to use them with my newest Whole 30 Cookbook but I don't have all the ingredients for the recipes. I did make a yummy broccoli dish from Performance Paleo that had you steam the broccoli and then cook it in a skillet with avocado oil and sundried tomatoes, pine nuts, and garlic till it started to brown. I used walnuts instead of pine nuts and it was pretty good. They had you half the brussels sprouts before you steamed them
.
I don't have a code for my Fit Tower Downloads. I wonder how long it will take Cathe's now to respond to my email. I just have the receipt for the Fit Tower, DVD's and downloads. Unless they are referring to the order code number by the downloads. Every item has an order code though. When I had ordered Strong and Sweaty they sent a separate email with the code.

That is the problem...... I don't have a bunch of egg whites, and my hand mixer may not be up to the task of whipping them completely. I used to do it but it took a looong time. I used to eat dessert more than I do these days, and angel food was fairly benign.
I agree, mixes always taste funny/off but before I start collecting egg whites, I want to see if the recipe "works" and if it's something I could serve in summer. I'm also thinking I could buy egg whites refrigerated in a carton. so unless there are other opinions on which mix is best, I will get Duncan Hines. you pour it into a flat jellyroll pan with sides so you get a big flat rectangle cake. flip it out, roll it up. then unroll to fill with sweetened a whipped cream mixture. with fresh berries, I thought it looked lovely and seasonal.
I like butternut chopped up tossed with olive oil and roasted maybe with some onions. I use as a base layer in a tostado or just plain by itself. I like asparagus plain roasted after a toss with olive oil too. my favorite way for many vegies.

Good evening ladies,

This morning was SB's Cardio Barre then a quick BBS tramp workout. 35 mins / 201 cal. This evening was a couple of Bellicon workouts by Daisy. She is from New Oleans and is a lot of fun. She may be my favorite Bellicon instructor. Total time was another 35 mins / 265 cal..70 mins for the day.

Glad everyone enjoyed the standing mountain climbers. I have no problem doing this move when I need to sub in. Like I mentioned if you use light weights you really feel this move, just in a gentler way than on the floor.

Bob blew our challenge off until the weekend. I told he he was a chicken!! Lol he laughed.

Diane Sue...your broccoli dish sounds yummy. When I ordered my tower downloads I noticed the email with the code never came through. Has never been an issue before. After a few days I contacted customer service and they sent me one. I checked today to make sure I still had the email in a folder and I do. Saturday is going to be a planned rest day for me so I will not download till Sunday. My husband, son and I will be going to all get new glasses. So we want to get there early since it is the three of us. Afterward we plan to go out for lunch then set up our pool. Will be a fun day. I liked Imax 2 a lot. The music is so much fun. Did not care for Imax 3. I bounce while she is talking too. Ha! Sometimes I am saying...ok move it along!

Deb...oh I am so sorry you had heartburn issues. You seemed to have been doing well. Good that you discovered broccoli is a trigger food. Stinks it is your favorite. It is one of mine too. Is the new Kelly Raw up yet? I did not see it this morning.

Caitlyn...nice you were able to put some weight on. Hilarious about gentle yoga. If they only knew what we ladies can do!

Judy...I can see that happening with the live workouts. You feel like you are right there with them and forget to modify. Glad you liked the Jari Love workout. I know many people love her. I have never done one of her workouts. Cathe is amazing with her strength and pace. I am always in awe of her.

Valerie..you get a workout with those for sure! I saw a deer this morning while driving to work. They are so beautiful. I love angel food cake. Hate to say I always buy a premade one. I know so bad. But it is convenient!

Caroyln, when I am doing step I use only 1 riser and that works fine for me. HR still gets up there. There you go problem solved..no need to to do mountain climbers on the floor. I can't remember the last time I did them on the floor!

Have a great night all!

Valerie, when I want to try a recipe to see how it will work out I make half a recipe and use a smaller pan. I hate making something and it not working out. Maybe a cake mix would be the way to try the recipe first and easier. I used to make an angel food cake in a tube pan and fill the middle with berries. We just served it with whipped cream, but rolling it up sounds like a nice idea. I make sponge cake rolls for the grandchildren on request. I have to roll those up in a clean towel while they cool till ready to fill.
I ended up making an asparagus soup recipe from Julie Bauer's Paleo cookbook that is topped with paleo friendly bacon (no sugar or nitrates) and a poached egg. It was pretty good. An interesting way to eat poached eggs. I am always thinking that I need to buy an egg poacher though. I may just roast the squash. I have seen some salad recipes that had butternut squash tossed in. I am not sure how that would taste. Maybe the right dressing and some pecans would be good. My daughter bought over an extra large zucchini and a large yellow squash. I just bought two zucchini's so I have some more stuff to come up with recipes for. I wish she didn't let them get so big. They are better smaller. They don't spiralize well when they are huge.

Lori, I was wondering how that challenge went :) I really like Anita Champion. She puts together some good workouts and is a motivator. I enjoy hearing her talk but I have to be doing something and not just sitting there like we are having a chat. I wish I would have noticed that I did not get the code sooner. I just read it on thread they posted about shipping and needing the download code. I figured I had it. I always print up the emails and put them in my workout purchase drawer and I have a folder for shopping that I leave the email in for reference. I was hoping to be able to download Saturday. Getting glasses and setting up the pool sounds like a fun day together.

Good morning,

No workout yesterday, but I did do a lot of weeding etc in the yard.

Judy, I hope the Foundation exercises help your back. I do not see much difference between the Live workouts and Cathe's DVD's, but I agree with Carolyn, it is definitely easier to pause a DVD than the streaming, especially with my set up. One think I like in the Live ones is that she breaks for water. :)

Carolyn, I have the same problem with mountain climbers...its not the floor part, but the getting up and down. That's why using the step makes is so much better. It doesn't seem to matter if the broccoli is cooked or raw....it has bothered me both ways. I looked it up on the net and it says that it is one of the hardest vegetables to digest and that is why it causes problems with some people.

Diane Sue, I could not see how sitting on the rebounder and bouncing could get the heart rate up, but a good discovery for sure! That cake you make sounds delicious.

Valerie, so cute that the baby turned back looking for Mom....just like any other young one would do. Not sure about other vegetables, like cauliflower. I need to go back to my food log and see what I was eating on days I had problems. Yes, it is getting to the point that you have to have a computer to do most things....I always wonder what people do that don't have one, or those that don't know how to use them.

Lori, great that you found a really good instructor that you like! LOL on Bob blowing off the challenge. It sounds like he is having second thoughts. Have not seen the new KCM RAw....Diane Sue mentioned it was not posted yesterday.

Going to meet my friend for lunch today....John is going on an overnight fishing trip, so it will be just me and the dogs until later on Saturday....

Anyone have any plans for the weekend?

Take care,

Deb, maybe it would be helpful if you found a link to foods that are harder to digest and your problem. At least rhen you would be able to eliminate them.. Lunch with a friend sounds nice.
As far as the weekend, we have another family birthday get together Sunday. I will still be working on varnishing and staining woodwrk. I finished the kitchen , laundry, and exit to the garage and am working on the front door and hotwater heater door in the entry. It is such an odd place for a water heater. It was the coat closet. I dont know what they were thinking. They put a heating and air unit in a closet in the kitchen and one upstairs then added a coat closet upstairs.

No workout for me today. I just didn't feel like it when I woke up today. My daughter gave me a gift card for a massage and I did that this morning. It was wonderful! I have had a tightness and some discomfort in my left glute and hamstring and that feels fine now. One reason that I decided not to workout today was that I didn't want to aggravate that feeling with a lower body workout.
I had a total body massage and a hot towel foot massage which felt heavenly. I'm sure that I will do this more often.

Diane Sue, I have noticed that we often check in at the same time. I have that same Juli Bauer cookbook, but have not made the soup. It looks tasty, but I don't think I would add the poached egg.

Hi to everyone. I hope you are having a good day.

Ina Garten (Barefoot Contessa) has a famous salad that used roasted squash. got rave reviews. OK but too sweet for me. I like my squash more savory and tend to use chili power and cumin with it. still, it was the idea of roasted squash in a salad that was such a hit. so I've done it myself less sweet, and with cabbage and feta cheese and also on lettuce.

we did a mt bike this morning, about 18-19 miles. it was on a closed road. uphill one way, downhill almost all the way back. more of an endurance ride than anything. a lot of fun! we saw a mother ruffed grouse and a whole bunch of little hatchlings as she crossed the road in front of us. there was a grader working on the road so this was likely the last chance before it gets reopened.

Deb that is too bad.. I would miss broccoli. I absolutely love it. I would never guess it was hard to digest..it seems so benign... but whatever works for you.

Valerie, I have made that Ina Garten salad many times. I love the addition of butternut squash.

Diane Sue, Julie Bauer has a recipe for a butternut squash salad in the book that we mentioned earlier. I am having it for dinner tonight. The maple mustard vinaigrette is delicious.

Carolyn ...the Ina salad had dried cranberries, didn't it? I loved the idea but had to tweak it a little to my tastes. I intended to try it using dried Montmorency cherries instead of cranberries. don't remember if I ever did. I liked the "roasted squash on a salad" so much I started looking for other things like it. this is the squash on a tostado. I'm sure I've done it with cabbage too.
http://www.eatingwell.com/recipe/251241/butternut-squash-black-bean-tostadas/
My squash was home grown and may have been sweeter than store bought squash. it is variable.

Well, I thought that I posted this this morning. I had to go to Sprouts and have been staining and varnishing all afternoon. I grilled some steaks and had the leftover Brussels sprouts with walnuts and sundried tomatoes with mine. I think they were even more yummy reheated. I picked up some mushrooms for a dish that uses leftover Italian roast from the new Whole 30 cookbook. They have several base meal recipes that have 3 other recipes to use the leftover for. It is Easy Beef, Mushroom, and Rosemary Ragout. They put it on spaghetti squash as an option. I am wondering if it would do okay to use zucchini noodles.
Today's workout was Jari Love Extremely Ripped Lean Machine, 57 minutes, 317 calories heart rate avg. 117/max146. I forgot that this one is almost like 3 different workouts put together and there is no final stretch at the end of it if you do the complete workout. There is a stretch at the end of the first workout and then it goes into a total body weight program still compound moves but not as cardiovascular and abs workout at the end. I don't think I have done this one as much. I then did Kelly Coffey Body Design cardio and light weights + yoga, 29 minutes, 161 calories, avg heart rate 117/max 149. Total steps for todays workout was 4,326 and calories burned 478, 86 minutes. Yesterday I got in 10,494 steps. I have been getting in more than 10,000 more often lately. Probably due to chang

Carolyn, that is probably where I saw the salad with butternut squash. I need to check it out. I was not wanting as heavy and intense of a workout today so The Jari I picked was somewhat lighter and options for no weights in some parts so it worked well for me. I used 5's and 8's a lot and 10's a little bit. I still followed the more advanced moves though.

Valerie, when I eat squash and pumpkin I tend to like them with things like garlic , pepper, and rosemary on them. Even when I make my salads with the apples or dried blueberries I add onion and celery and use lots of pepper on them. I like the sweet and salty or tart type dishes. I really need to roast the butternut squash ahead of time. I don't care for it in soups and stews because it always gets mushy. I will check out that recipe. I never see Montmorency cherries in the store. I look. I have seen dried tart cherries. They have some larger dried sweet cherries at Sprouts. You would think with their selection that they would have some of they types of cherries that a lot of my books recommend. I need to check out the link you posted. Will do it when I am done here.

I am hoping to get my code for my downloads by tomorrow. They told me I would get my downloads and code since I am in their system and not to worry.

Good evening ladies,

This morning was SB Adv Barre with Ball, 19m. I then did a BBS tramp 11m and a Bellicon one for 10 mins. 40m total for 229cal. This was my only workout. I have so much vacation time I asked my boss if I could leave at 1pm on Fridays thur labor day. He was fine with that and today was my first day. Was nice to be home so early. Came home and did some housework so it is done and now I am all set to relax for the weekend.

Diane Sue...I like Anita too and was bery surprised to learn she is in her early 50's. She looks so young too me. Good for her! Hoping you receive the codes quickly. Looks like they will be available for download tomorrow. I may try and download in the evening. We will see. Sounds like a busy weekend for you!

Deb...I think Cathe's dvds are so much harder than her live workouts. And I believe they just seem that way becuase of frequent water breaks! I wonder why she does not add them in as frequently in her dvds. I checked a shprt while ago and still no new Raw workout.

Carolyn...you sound like I do sometimes in the morning. Just not feeling it. A massage sounds lovely.

Valerie...sounded like a great ride. Love that you see so much wild life.

We have a busy day tomorrow. Going to rain in the morning but afternoon should be nice.

Have a great night all!
