Pentagenarians & Beyond: W/B 4/2

Judy that is a good idea... adding on the muscle meltdown. I did an earlier workout yesterday but this time DH wanted his lunch and was agitating for me to get done. I did TBM and called it a day. I did a lot of shopping and stops in the afternoon, so I was happy I'd quit when I did. you're right , that ab workout was tough. I do some side plank moves but not all. they are awkward for me, sometimes one side more than the other.. the push up series was pretty harsh too.

I've gotten in the habit of taking my iphone to bed so I can use it to look up words while I'm reading or doing puzzles. I know about not using electronics but it's usually only the dictionary. I don't read current events /headlines before trying to sleep. puzzles help me unwind and get me tired enough to sleep without revving me up. I don't do any coffee after noon ever. I tried melatonin and didn't notice anything at all. I use advil Pm occasionally if I wake up and feel like I'll have trouble going back to sleep.

Good evening ladies,

This morning I did SB's Standing+Matt Lower Body, 24m plus a couple of short Bellicon workouts from their streaming site. Total time was 38m / 252 cal. That was my only workout. Still tired from my all day work excursion!

GiGi is a cutie pie. She is getting so big! I would post pictures more often but I am usually on my Ipad which does not allow me too.

Deb...glad you like the PHA workout. After this new series I think I am going to stop buying Cathe Workouts. I just do not do them. I have been in denial. Between her Live workouts, SB and my Power Jumps. I have more workouts than I could ever need. I say that now but we will see when faced with the next presale!

Diane Sue...great workout combination. Some of Cathe's low impact workouts can be really intense so not suprise the higher HR reading. I like you are adding in steps. I am also going to mention steps. Right now I am at 9,956. I will hit 10,000 before I go to bed. Wednesday with my long bounce workouts I hiit 16,655. That might be a record for me. The fitbit fireworks sound cute!!!

Valerie...I was the same with boots. Sometimes I had to go a bigger size to be able to zipper over my calves. I am 5'2 and take a 9 shoe. Hated to go into a 10!!!! I have my mom's height and my dad's feet and hands! Lol!! Anyway Barre really has helped slim as I have mentioned. Hope your hip is feeling better.

Judy... the SB Total Barre workout was great. I enjoyed it. She seems to be getting really thin. Her face really shows it in this workout. I have noticed it in her recent bounce workouts too. I go to bed all the time reading from my ipad. It does not seem to bother me at all. I fall right to sleep. Guess I am fortunate.

Carolyn...have a great meeting tomorrow. Your menu sounds perfect. Glad you had no damage. So scary.

Caitlin...I have never had to deal with allergies. I sympathize with those that do. I have never been able to do Rhythmic Step! Way to complex for me!

Have a great night all!

Hello to all,

I had rather severe DOMS in my triceps today, so I did my upper body with Muscle Max which is a bit easier. I also did Cardio Slam without mat because, when I moved, the mat did not come with me. I just pretended the mat was there. I may give up on Polar HRM's because the same thing keeps happening to the FT4, and it just stays on 0 and never says my heart rate.

Tomorrow I am going to try to get some strength work in and maybe some of the bounce workout. We have someone coming to give another price quote and my two older grandsons are coming over to chisel tile and do concrete in the bath and pull carpet in other areas of the house and tile in the kitchen and entry. It looks like it may be a busy day. I diced up veggies for my Paleo Slow Cooker taco soup so maybe I can get it in the crockpot before I workout in the morning.

Valerie, I guess we all have those areas that we have to make adjustments for. I generally do not like to wear tops and dresses that are not someone stretchy because they tend to pull tight across the shoulders. My feet do not tolerate many styles of shoes and heels are rarely something I will put on. My preference is slip on sandals and athletic shoes. I doubt wearing flat shoes would make the legs larger and heels would make them have shape. I used to feel in terror over tornadoes. Anymore they do not frighten me like they did.
It
Carolyn, my husband was complaining yesterday and wondering if he was getting allergies. I think it was more all of the stuff he was breathing chiseling up tile and pulling carpet though. I am getting new air filters and filters for my air purifier, but don't want to put them in till the mess is finished. I am hoping mine will continue to not be bad this year. I am sleeping without coughing and that alone is amazing.

Judy, that was a nice workout combination. I always read about the devices at night. Generally I do my nutrition information, get ready for bed, then read a bit on my tablet and play word with friends. Then I am off to bed. That is probably not ideal. We have an ionic breeze in our room and I put a wash cloth over the blue light on top because it is so bright it bothers me. It is bad enough having two alarm clocks and the red light from the television and the Roku stick. My husband turns the Tread Climber off at the switch on the bottom because it is another distracting light. All of that is enough to keep someone awake at night. I put the sheet over my head when I go to sleep. I just purchased a new alarm clock for my husband that shines on the ceiling  And the other two are going. I was turning mine to face away from the bed anyway. I wake up before my husband most of the time and if I need up earlier I use my phone or tablet. I take a magnesium and calcium a couple of hours before bedtime. I don't know if that helps much or not. I went back to Sprouts today to pick up some more Aller Max since I forgot it yesterday. It was a bit less price wise than Amazon. This is probably because they have had it marked down the over the whole last month.

Lori, I am near time for bed and I have 10,209 steps on my Fit Bit. I am always happy when it vibrates and I see the fireworks on the screen. It was sort of shooting rainbows before the update. I like the fireworks better. I also like that it vibrates as a reminder to move if I have not moved 250 steps per hour. It does this for 14 hours allowing for sleep and rest time. It kind of helps goals because it will show green for each area you meet your goal. Today my whole thing of floors, miles, calories, minutes of exercise, and steps were all green and it pops up and tells me that's a lot of green :) Anyway, some of the new features have helped make me want to try to enhance the goals and get more steps in. I think I should get my Fit Tower before long. I saw that it had finally been charged to my bank account. I didn't see a way to track it and was wondering about it. It will be fun trying it out with my SB workouts and other

Caitlin, I have been doing cardio slam without my mat or just using it as a marker in front of me because I don't like doing some of those moves on and off of it. I end up with my feet tangled up in it. When my large puzzle mats did not glide across the carpet at my last two homes, I used those for markers rather than using a mat. I don't mind the mat so much for the Ice workout but I don't like it on Cardio Slam. It is not really necessary as long as you jump and hop far enough.

There was this 80 year old woman in our area who walked her little dog every day and t a liked to every one. She was going for her walk ant two pit bull mix dogs attacked her and her dog and killed her. It is so sad. The owners were not in town.

Ha Lori, I can't zip boots no matter what size, they are just too tight. I had size 6.5 to 7 feet. they are disproportionate, feet that don't go with leg. my feet are closer to 7.5 these days. I wish all the work had made a difference in appearance but it didn't.... I did stay "fit"..... not a bad outcome, really, but not what I thought would happen.
I am always amazed people work a body part and get appearance change because it never worked for me. nothing ever "leans out" or "bulks up". I got stronger and could do more but everything looked the same. I always buy large tops because my shoulders don't fit, especially sports things that are made to fit "athletic". I hate things where the fabric pulls. don't care if it has stretch, I don't like the feel.
I did 15min jogging on the treadmill and then Ramped upper body. I like this one, but not getting any closer to cathe's weight level. I felt a wrist strain on right hand so backed down on a few things, because I felt I might not be able to hang onto the weight. still used reasonable weights, 10's on a lot of moves, that didn't bother it.

Good morning,

No workout yesterday, I went to my friend's house for tea, and lunch.

The Nourishing Gurus have a free Veggie Challenge if anyone is interested:

http://nourishinggurus.com/veggiechallenge2017

Diane Sue, I never really understood what "met value" is. I just take whatever my Polar HRM says and record that number. :). All those light sources may be keeping you from sleeping. Have you ever tried a sleep mask? I started using one and I think it is helping. That is horrible about that lady and her dog!

Valerie, how exciting to be that close to having the house done. Do you do crossword puzzles or other types?

Carolyn, I briefly thought about the treadmill yesterday too....very briefly! Glad you did not get any damage.

Judy, great workouts! I love the MM ones. I also use the iPad too much before bed. I bought a pair of those "blue light eliminator" classes on Amazon and they help, but they give everything a yellow tint. I had my annual eye check up this past Monday, and they are going to use a pair of my old frames and make a pair of blue light eliminator classes for me with my reading prescription, out of clear glass. I also started using Melatonin this week and it seems to be helping.

Lori, I can't imagine how tired you must have been from that 24 hour work day! Puppies grow so fast, sometimes you wish that they stayed small. I feel like you about the CAthe workouts...so many to do! I sometimes feel guilty when I don't use the Live ones. I am starting to regret buying the new Tower ones, since they look like they need the New Tower to do them and I have the old one.

Caitlin, did you try changing the battery in your HRM? When mine keeps doing that "0" thing, it usually means one of the batteries is low and needs changing.

Agility class this morning, and HouseMax for me. We are supposed to get some nice weather starting today, and up to the 70's by Monday!

Take care,

Deb, yesterday was the first day we knew that the house project was finally finishing. we started this project more than 10 years ago when we bought the land. DH has been the driving force here, I probably wouldn't have done it. I thought we might just park the camper on the land when we wanted to be in the area for vacations and let it go at that.
we've stayed in rental houses in the area since camping year round is not reasonable. too cold, nights too long in a camper. we both love it there. Campgrounds are only tolerable for a short amount of time and in summer are full most of the time. people in campgrounds are hard to tolerate.. smoky campfires, noise, screaming kids, barking dogs, late night partying... it gets old quickly. Now we will have a place to go after hiking instead of spending the whole day agonizing over where/how we will spend the night.

I do Sudoku , crossword, and other word puzzles. I get a copy of the NYT from a cousin and do the puzzles. the crosswords are pretty tough, don't always get them, sunday especially. I use the dictionary on my phone to look up things. it doesn't disrupt sleep but maybe because it's a tiny screen. the puzzles themselves are paper. I have a simple clock but the illuminated face bothers me. I face it sideways so I can't see it easily. no other lights in the room, and blinds on the window. I can't sleep if it's light! never could, so at least it's not 'age related".
thanks for the link, a vegie challenge sounds like fun.

Very sad story about the dogs. pit bulls are the one breed of dog I am nervous about. so many of them now, since apparently they are aggressive in every way and seems like pit bull mixes are the dominant dog available. two dogs working together will do things a single dog would not do. too bad the penalties are not tougher.
ETA when my sister wanted a dog a couple years ago, I did searches for her. surprisingly there are loads of places with dogs that will ship them to you somehow, but most dogs available are not pure breds. it seemed like everything available was some variety of "lab or shepherd pitbull mix." I would feel uneasy with anything part pitbull. I know that training them to be mean and aggressive is a big part of the problem, but I also think that there is underlying nature to think about.

I feel maxed out on workouts. I want to focus on what I have. a new series is enticing but I don't need more. have the older tower. I decided the Sweat series would be "it" for a while. we need to set up a home gym in our new house. won't buy as much big equipment. I plan to move some stuff over there. not sure what will work best. it was one reason I bought the full size step. it will work as a bench, but comes apart and takes up little space. If we buy anything, it would be a spin bike. then I might look at more spin workouts. I will need another set of weights too.

Today's workout felt very long because I had to stop several times. I did Rock'm Sock'm timesaver #7 warm up and blasts, 22 minutes, 170 calories, 130 average/ 168 max heart rate. I then did Ice Metabolic Total Body 50 minutes, 119 average/ 150 max heart rate, 324 calories. Cathe had this at a met 8 and 443 calories:rolleyes: I went heavier on almost everything except a couple of things I used 5# for. I used 20's for the deadlift row moves, mostly 15's and 12's for a lot of it. I finished with Barre Amped Bounce thighs, booty, & stretch, 35 minutes, 150 calories. Total time was 1 hour 47 minutes, calories 644, 5,492 steps. Hopefully I can get to 10,000 today.

Valerie, it really depends on how I eat how much definition I see. If I am not working as hard and eat more starchy carbs, fruit, and sweet stuff like dark chocolate I can look a bit softer. Not was much vascularity. Most of the softness hits the hips and abs become a little softer. Most of it for me is diet. I have to be motivated with a vacation or event to really want to stay really strict with the diet. I eat pretty well most of the time though. But, like you there are certain areas that don't change much. Every once in awhile if I work really hard I think I can see a bit of calf muscle, but they are still thin. I have a bunch of Under Armour compression t shirts and tanks and I do not like wearing them anymore. I hate having something clinging to me. It is uncomfortable. That is great that your husband was tenacious and got your home finished. I know you will really enjoy it. I hope these people have some sort of consequences for those dogs. There are so many people around here with the lake and the park, walking paths etc. that are on foot. I have seen loose dogs out here harassing people before. I guess it would pay to always have some pepper spray or some sort of deterrent. Although unless a person is aware and has it handy it is probably not going to help. They said something on the news about the authorities having to round up the dogs that were on their way towards a group of children to harass them. I feel bad for the woman an her family. That is a terrifying way to lose ones life. I would bet she tired to protect her little dog. There are a lot of Pit Bull mixes out there. I don't think that animal control keeps them alive when they pick them up. I may be wrong though. I used to do the newspaper crosswords and would buy the crossword magazines that my grandchildren and I would do while waiting in the car for school pick up and drop off. Then cell phones and tablets took a lot of that away. I prefer table top family games and rarely play anything on a device other than words with friends. I won't do that with anyone that uses cheats. (like my brother who admits it and spells words that there is no definition for) I always look up something if I do not know what it is. My curiosity is always there and I need to know.

Deb, reading about the metabolic tables, they are guidelines. People's metabolism can be different, our weight can affect it. I look at them though and I can see I am pretty much 2 met values under what is posted on the workout manager when it comes to my heart rates and calories burned. A mask might work. I hadn't thought of that. When my husband was out of country I used to completely darken the room. A lot of the time if he is still up when I go to bed I leave a the night light on the lamp on so he doesn't trip over anything going to bed. He does the same. but dims the overhead lights. Why do you think the new workouts will not work with the original Fit Tower? I didn't think that there was much difference in the two. Isn't the cardio one sort of cardio alternated with barre work? I guess I need to look at them some more.
Speaking of lighting, I feel like all of these new LED lights can affect a person a lot. They are so intense that sometimes they make my eyes water. I told my husband I have those floating halos on my right eye and the lights bother me. I wonder if they will find that they affect peoples eyesight over time. Even car headlights use them and they are extra bright.

This afternoon I did Muscle Max, a timesaver premix for 51 minutes. The meeting went well.

Diane Sue, that's terrible about the elderly woman in your area. There have been two of those awful dog attacks here in recent months. One was two young children who were walking to the school bus stop. One child died and the other one was recently released from the hospital and is still in rehab. It was an awful occurrence.

Caitlin, I was going to make the same suggestion as Deb to change the battery in your Polar. For me it was usually the battery for the sensor that caused strange readings or zero heart rate. The other thing that would happen was that the chest strap was not quite in the correct location.

I am fortunate in that I don't have sleep problems. I always check my email and read after I go up to the bedroom. So far the devices don't bother me. I also use a small towel to cover the blue light on the cable box. I can't stand to have it showing.

Have a wonderful afternoon.

Diane Sue, I saw a very cIheap mat on Amazon, so I may get it, and, sometimes, l like to do Yoga, and you need a mat for that. I should check the battery of my HRT watch, but I don't know where to do that here in Catskill. Frank and I went food-shopping today, and I left a very big package on the floor near the register. I called them, and I found out that their Customer Service had it. I walked back, so I decided to get an hour of hill walking in, and then I picked up the package. When I came home, I did Chiseled Lower Body Blast. Maybe Frank knows how to open the watch. Thanks for all the suggestions.
