Pentagenarians & Beyond: W/B 4/2

No workout for me today. This has been a day of severe weather and tornado warnings. We have been in and out of what we call "the tornado closet". It's better at present but we still have storms going on.

Deb, I'm glad that you are going through with the tests. I agree with Valerie that the physicians need to be able to rule out possible causes. I love the Gym Style dvds.

Caitlin, good luck with finding classes that you can enjoy. Sometimes churches and recreation centers here have great classes.

Greetings to all and wishing you a wonderful day.

Hi Everyone,

This week is going by quickly. Sunday I did S & S Total Body Giant Sets, Monday & Tuesday I did Spinervals, and today I did 4 DS Legs and Core.

Deb-I agree that it's good you are going through with the tests. I love the Gym Style workouts. I should do them more often.

Carolyn-I hope the weather has cleared up there. I used to live in Iowa and tornado warnings were a regular occurrence there too. Although they don't happen as often in Michigan, we get them occasionally. I hope your husband had a nice birthday. Cake and ice cream sound good!

Valerie-I also noticed my hips were very sore after doing To The Mat and my low back was bothering me too. I need to be careful with that one. It does seem like it's still winter everywhere. We are supposed to get a couple of inches of snow tomorrow night.

Diane Sue-That is great that your allergy symptoms are much better! I have been taking Quercetin daily and I think it's helping a little but I still need to take an antihistamine. I've been alternating between Claritin and Allegra.

Lori-I hope you had a good trip! You must have been exhausted after that long day. I hope you got some good rest today.

Caitlin-Hill workouts are so great! I used to do them regularly, both walking/running and biking. As soon as the weather gets better I will be getting back outside too.

Judy

I like that there are some new faces for the Fit Bit Blaze. I changed mine and it looks pretty good with the purple band. You can tap on the screen and see a list of all of the stats and tap again and it goes back to the time date heart rate and steps. I pre-ordered Cathe's new workouts this afternoon and also the Fit Tower with the bar clips. I also ordered the To the Mat Ice workout that I had not purchased yet. I ordered from Cathe since it was free shipping and the Rock'm Sock'm I got from Amazon has given me problems in my dvd player. I still need to get a newer dvd player.

Deb, I think that is the Gym Style Premix I used to use a lot because it was supersets and it skipped the shoulders. I think getting those tests is probably for the best. I still hope that you do not have this continuing problem while waiting.

Valerie, Gym Styles is the one where Cathe had the hair piece in it. It doesn't bother me. I just seemed so different from Cathe's look. I have To the Mat coming. That sounds like a move similar to what is done on the 21 Day Fix Extreme Pilates with the tubing. I like that one but some of it makes my low back and hip hurt on the right side and I find it very uncomfortable holding the handles down on the floor while I have it wrapped around my feet. My wrists start hurting from hanging on to it and I think I try to adjust the rest of my body to relieve the pressure. My aunt went back up to her home in Washington with her fifth wheel she pulls about two weeks ago. I was kind of worried about her. She goes down to Arizona during the winter and parks at her granddaughter's and then works her way back up stopping at her sisters and daughter'. I think she was anxious to get home though. She lives in her trailer though. She has a lot of land and is building a home. Her son has been working on it. If he gets it ready this summer she may not make that trip again. She is 79. She is an amazing little woman and very self sufficient all by herself. Quite independent. I remember all of the dusty rose and mauve colors they did for awhile. I bet that you were glad to get rid of it. My husband and I were looking at some rally nice looking wood vinyl that looks so real. They say it wears really well. We were trying to decide which would be best with Gertie and getting scratches. The Vinyl is supposed to be really tough. We bought vinyl for the bath, but more to match the beige colors in the counter and shower tile. My husband was talking about taking them back and getting the wood ceramic. The only issue with that is we would have to get my son to help. He has a tile cutter and did my smaller bath in my other house. He also did some of those very small mosaic tiles in multiple beige/brown colors along the upper side wall behind the tub. They had to tear that out when we had the slab leak and we needed to replace what they had taken out. It turned out well. We try to do as much as we can without asking for help. My grandsons are another story though. We pay them something and they get some learning experiences out of the projects while they help. They do not mind.

Judy, I put my allergies to the test today and went out and swept up tons of seedlings from two types of trees. The one type, my grandchildren used to like to crush and it made yellow powder. I generally am miserable when those things are around. I did feel a bit of the scratchy throat and was sneezing a bit when I came in but it seems to have let up after I washed up and changed clothes. I am using Country Life Aller-Max since the other product I used before went way up in price. I got this one at Sprouts for 12.00 and it seems good. I take two a day. It has Quercitin, Bromelain, C, stinging nettle, L-Histadine, N-Acetyl Cysteine, cayenne pepper, and grapeseed extract. Also some vitamin A, Zinc , calcium and pantothenic acid. It has a bit more ingredients than the D-Hist had. Between that, the bee pollen, and I take a little vinegar, lemon juice, and honey mixed together which is supposed to help with mucous and congestion, it seems to be helping. I guess time will tell as we get into full spring. My Aunt that I mentioned above keeps bees an has her own logo from all of the honey she used to sell. She suggested to me that I start taking the bee pollen a couple of months before allergy season starts and it should help. She does not take meds and stays in great health. I thought it was worth a try. I just had to find the best local pollen I could find . Sprouts and Walmart carry bee pollen but it is not local. I purchased online.

Good morning,

No workout yesterday, just did not feel it. Will get back to it today.

Diane Sue, great job on the steps. That FitBit calculation does seem strange. Sleep is so important. Lack of it causes so many problems for people. I have a book called The Healing Power of Sleep that talks all about this. I do a lot to try to help my sleep...even using acupressure wrist bands that put pressure on a spot that is supposed to help insomnia. Also use oils, and a sleep mask. Great that you ordered the new workouts and the Tower! Do you have the original Tower? Your aunt sounds exactly like a character in this book series I read...it is a great series...http://www.barnesandnoble.com/w/invisible-lorena-mccourtney/1014407328?ean=9781585585199. She eventually gets a motor home and goes around the country....sounds like your aunt!

Valerie, probably a good thing to postpone your trip for a bit. No reason to get caught in an area with a lot of snow! We also had pink tile ( called "Venetian Pink") before we had the bathroom remodeled. I have not tried any of the Giant Sets premix...I can see though with the way it is set up that it may not be that easy to isolate just one portion of the body. When you say "luxury vinyl" is it really vinyl, or ceramic? My brother put a vinyl linoleum floor in his half bath that looks exactly like Italian tile. I wish I would have done something like that in my bathrooms...I am beginning to hate ceramic tile...no matter what they tell you, "stain free grout" is NOT stain free.

Carolyn, I can see why you would have a rest day yesterday...what is the tornado closet?

Judy, all this talk about Giant Sets makes me want to do that one. We are also supposed to get a lot of snow tomorrow. Ugh...just in time for the weekend. I don't think I even ever tried To the Mat. It is all floor work, or does it have barre in it too?

A workout, then some food shopping...have to make the dog's food this weekend...

Take care,

Deb-There isn't any barre in To The Mat. It's all floor. I hope you don't get too much snow tomorrow. I have been working on getting better sleep too.

Good morning ladies,

Tuesday was such a long day. Got up at 2am and got home at 12:50am. Way too long for me. I slept in yesterday and went into work for 10:00am. Did what I needed to do and came home. Took a nap and then felt like a new person. I decided to workout because I ate so bad and wanted to do something. My new matt for my jumpsport came today so of course I wanted to try out. I did a quick power jump workout and followed up with SB's challenge for the day which was Barre Hiit Circuit. Total time was 80 minutes and 577 calories. The matt was great and no issues. It was so hard to add the new matt. Was not easy at all. I am home today too. This was a scheduled day off. My husband went for a stress test so I am going to keep him company in between test. It seems to be brutal for someone that does not normally work out.

Diane Sue...yes..the light weights can really max you out. Nice you bought the Fit Tower. I am really looking forward to the new workouts. you have been doing great with your steps. I have seen some really nice FitBit bands. very cute colors. hmm it deducts calories?

Deb...I need to try out Gym Style. Everyone talking about them are making me want to revisit. Great the Saab is coming out. Yes I heard snow too! Poor GiGi we have not walked her much the past couple of weeks. Really hoping the next round of tests shows something so you can get treated and move on.

Valerie...has it been 2 years since your bathroom remodel? Seems like it was not long ago - boy time just flies. Yes makes no sense to travel and yes it is still winter here!!!!

SB has a new total body barre workout up that looks great. It has been a while since she has posted a non bounce workout. I may do this one today after the scheduled Strong Back. Judy, Strong Back is a favorite upper body of mine. Not sure if you have tried it.

Hi to Carolyn and Caitlin!

I did the giant sets upper body only premix and didn't like it too much. the exercises themselves were fine. it would work better as cathe had recorded it, alternating with lower body. I ended up having to pause often just because it was too many upper body moves right in a row, with serious weight. then I did the ab bonus and found it pretty hard. a lot of side plank type positions. I am getting better at those slowly but I had to skip several moves. I will work up to them but too many for me bunched all together. plus it was the first time thru that one.

the flooring is called "luxury vinyl" but each brand has its own specific name. Armstrong is one company that makes it. these are big squares/ rectangles ( 16 inches) that resemble stone, wood, or concrete that are set down with or without grout. they are some combination of natural and synthetic components. they are light, and flexible not stiff and heavy like stone. they are glued down and can be cut to fit with a heat gun and a knife. I think it is much nicer than any kind of sheet vinyl plus you can do it yourself or have a contractor do it. if there is a problem, like damage to a tile, squares can be replaced individually. the material is fine to use in a bathroom near water where as laminate generally is not. I love the stuff! it can be swept, vacuumed, damp mopped. easy to care for. not hard , cold, and unforgiving like stone and way cheaper to install. we did our bathroom and much of our house with it. it also is light weight enough so you don't need to add support to the sub floor to use it. every flooring place we looked at had it, and there are brands other than Armstrong. http://www.congoleum.com/duraceramic/

I was thinking in To The Mat there are a few standing exercises that are close what I call barre. I wounded myself with some of the floor work. didn't think the exercise was hard to do but it really made one hip joint sore. not the muscle, the joint. ouch!

ordinarily in mid april we are gearing up to do hiking and mt biking but there is still a lot of snow and roads aren't open yet. this will be a late year for opening. other areas have heavy spring runoff so not accessible yet. we want to get over to see how our house is doing , but the builder must be on vacation and we won't go unless we are sure we can get into it.

Lori glad you survived that marathon day!.. yep, time flies.

I am back on schedule after a strange weather day yesterday. We didn't have any damage but many people did. Today I did 4 Day Split Kickboxing with Legs and Core. Judy, thanks for reminding me about that one. I was trying to decide on a legs and ab workout. I don't have Pure Strength which what is on the April rotation.

Lori, that was quite a marathon workday! Great that you were able to get some rest yesterday.

Valerie, that luxury vinyl looks interesting. I am going to look at it as a possibility for my kitchen.

Deb, we don't have a basement so we use an interior closet for tornado warnings. My children named it the tornado closet.

Diane Sue, your aunt sounds like an amazing person. I hope I can be that way! It's great that you ordered the Fit Tower. I am looking forward to the new dvds.

Have a great day.

Todays, workout was Ripped with Hiit Plyo Hiit #1, 28 minutes, 183 calories, heart rate avg. 138/max 171. Then I did Strong and Sweaty PHA, 50 minutes (7 extra for writing things down and adjusting) 275 calories, hr 114/144. I used Barre Amped Bounce stretch at the end, 8 minutes, 20 calories. Total time was 86 minutes, calories burned 478. I don't know what is up with the workout manager. It would not work for me again today.
Weights all 12 reps each round of exercises repeated 3 times
squat off the end 20#, 20#, 20#
overhead press 15's, 15's, 15's
side lunges 15's, 15's, 15's
upright rows 15's, 15's 15's
step ups 15's, 20's 20's
release push ups body weight
second round
cross back lunge 20#,20#,20#
biceps curls 15's, 15's 15's
deadlifts 30's,30's,30's
pullovers 12's, 15's 15's
standing squats 25's, 25's 25's
lying extensions 15's,15's,15's

Deb, no I did not have the original fit tower. This will be my first one. Thanks for the link to the book. That sounds interesting. I will go look it up. I wonder if I could get it from my library downloads. I have tried all sorts of things to help me sleep. I have tried steaming grout and scrubbing it with cleaners and a brush. Nothing gets the stains and discoloration out of it.

Lori, yes, the Fit Bit takes a way calories during the day and dependent on my activity and steps it will give back some. By the end of the day I either gain a few extra step calories or I still am in a bit of a deficit. It is annoying when I first put in my workouts and all of the sudden half my calories are gone. But most of them seem to come back. I am not sure the point of this. You can buy the Fit Bit Blaze straps with the frame and it just snaps in really easily to change or there are some little clips on the frame that makes it easy to change the straps only. They do have lots of colors and lots of different faces. They just made the 10000 step mark shoot off fireworks :) There is a relax feature now. They just keep adding things since I have purchased mine. I am glad the jump sport worked for you today. I bet it was more difficult to put the mat on since it would be tighter.

Valerie, it is harder doing all of those giant sets without a break on upper body. It is the same with the lower body only. I think it makes it much harder without the relief of moving from upper to lower. I have used other premixes for this that worked well. PHA is pretty tough doing it as lower only. I think that is because that end is where most of the heart rate elevation comes from.

Carolyn it is ideal for a kitchen. real ceramic tile is so unforgiving. anything you drop... smashes. it is hard to stand on and cold. also if the house was not built for the weight of tile, you need to do support work before using it. Duraceramic or like products give you the look of tile without the drawbacks, plus it is not that expensive and is doable yourself, if you choose to. I have hardwood in my kitchen which was not the best choice but it is easy to walk on, clean, warm underfoot but water damage is pretty easy to happen. we have I duraceramic in our family room, and a spark from the wood stove burned a spot. we were able to replace the one tile without tearing up the whole thing. the grout is a special compound that is somewhat flexible and doesn't discolor.

diane sue ...yes that's what I was getting at. if you alternate upper and lower, it's easier to keep moving. I ended up taking breaks since it was 15 or 20 upper body exercises right in a row. made for a kind of broken up workout.

Did Total body metabolic this morning.

Carolyn, I am glad that you did not have any damage. I hate severe weather. I am looking forward to having the fit tower. I wonder how long it takes to ship?

Lori, love the pictures of your doggies. It reminds me of pictures I have of Gertie's black body in the white snow and having it all over her nose. She loved it.

Valerie, my husband is having my grandson return the vinyl peel and stick we purchased. He purchased a thick wood look flooring today for all of the bare floors downstairs and is having my grandson pick it up in the morning while he is at work. He had to go back and get more concrete and sand for the floor where they dug out for the plumbing. He didn't have enough when he started working on it today.

Diane Sue, I have terrible allergies, and I felt the best when I got an allergy shot each week. Benadryl works better than Claritan for me. I also remember you saying that boots are always too big around your ankle and lower leg. I am only 5'1", but I barely weigh much more than 100 pounds, and I have the same problem. Today, I did Rhythmic Step and I still like it, and my lower body. I like Giant Sets, but I don't do the upper body to that yet, as I don't have an exercise ball, and I know I can modify it.

Good morning,

Yesterday I did S&S PHA Training,. I think this is my favorite from this series.

Judy, we will have to compare "better sleep" ideas! So far the snow we got overnight is only sticking to the grass, but the streets look slick...so not sure how driving will be.

Lori, great pics of the pets1 :) That was definitely a long day! Almost 24 hours...yikes! Good that the new mat worked well.

Valerie, I really don't think the Giant Sets workout was meant to be a lower or upper alone workout...it works the best with the whole thing done. Probably the same for the PHA which also goes from upper to lower to upper etc. All those lower or upper in a row would be really difficult. I will be looking into that type of flooring for any new one we decide to do in the future. How long a drive is it to your new house?

Carolyn, good that you have the Tornado Closet!

Diane Sue, I think you would like that series. Also, I believe I got some of them as E- books from our library.

Making the dog's food this morning, I have the treadmill "waiting" for me to get on...maybe later...:)

Any fun plans for the weekend?

Take care,

Today, I did Intensity warm up and step, 31 minutes, 239 calories. heart rate avg 139/ max 165. I followed this with Ice Low Impact Sweat workout 2 with blizzard blast premix 14 37 minutes, 256 calories. heart rate 127/178 . Oddly, workout manager gives Intensity a met value of 7 and Low Impact sweat an 8. I really would have thought that it would be the other way around. But then my max heart rate was higher on Low Impact Sweat. I am a bit surprised. I used my Fit Bit though. But I do like to make comparisons. I generally find I would be more a met value of 6 or 7 for most cardio workouts and rarely an 8. I finished off with Strong and Sweaty bonus abs 13 minutes . Total time 81 minutes, calories burned 558 Total. 6576 steps. So far I started with a plus of 270 calories estimated on steps from Fit Bit to My Fitness Pal after working out they took 140 calories off of my total workout calories leaving me at 418 calories instead of the 558. It seems as I get more steps in later in the day I get that back and sometimes some extra step calories. I am trying to figure out why they calculate that way. Heading to a art presentation that my granddaughter's coop is putting on. They may come back here afterward for some more sewing. I seriously need to clean up some of the dust from the chiseling and carpet removal. I did finally get bedding washed and our bedroom dusted up last night.

Deb, I wrote the book and author down so I can look. I like PHA because changing upper and lower and exercises seems to make it not seem so long. Also, it is not a really long weight workout and seems pretty effective since time is not wasted. My weekend is probably going to be remodeling work. It seems like it should be Wednesday and not Friday to me. It seems like things have been going non stop here.

Deb, I wanted to give my sore hip a second day off so thought "upper body only" supersets would give me that. I really like the supersets for muscle meltdowns.... but all those different exercises in a row were not a good way to go. I forget if there were 3 sets of 5 or 4 sets. there is a premix for it. I had to reduce weight levels because I got tired and it didn't take much less time because I had to pause a lot. our house is about an 11-12 hour drive. depends on time of year, which vehicle, how much road construction is going on. we are 4-6 weeks from being done as of yesterday.

Lori what great pics. gigi is so photogenic!

Carolyn when I lived in Wisconsin, we had a lot of years with serious tornado threats. we had a basement but there was the bathroom, in- the- tub backup plan too. I moved away from there for a lot of reasons but one was because I got too stressed over tornados. I also got away from the grass or plants that were seriously allergenic for me. I think the areas where tornados happen a lot has shifted from back in the 50's and 60's.

My ankles are the opposite. I always say, I don't have any.... goes from feet , which are small, to leg. I never can buy any kind of fashion boot. even downhill ski boots got impossible when they got taller and plastic. no tapered pants. I just bought some Terry bike capris and the bottom band is awfully tight but I wanted a 3/4 length for warmer weather. my calves are ridiculous. even those tall rubber garden boots don't fit. if the foot fits, the leg is too small. it is very aggravating and nothing changes. not fat, but the muscles are too big and extend low. they blew up in size when I was about 12. my aunts all used to discuss how it was my mothers fault because she let me wear flat tennis shoes and wearing heels would shape them up. but... enough whining.
we are expecting windy stormy weather mid day so I am getting this and a workout done early.

Hello Ladies,
Today I did Low Impact Step. I briefly thought about the treadmill, but step won out.

I am hosting our meeting tomorrow and I need to provide refreshments/brunch. I made morning glory muffins, but I didn't feel like doing a lot of cooking. I made a quick trip to the Fresh Market and picked up a quiche and some fresh strawberries.

Valerie, I think we all have a body part that we constantly agonize over. Actually I have several! We are certainly getting more sever weather than we have in the past. Georgia is really bad for allergies. Whenever I spend time outside I come back with sneezing, sniffling and a headache.

Have a wonderful day and enjoy your workouts.

Hi Everyone,

Yesterday was a rest day and today I did ICE Metabolic Total Body, with MM Chest and Icy Core.

Deb-I really need to work on my sleep habits. My worst habit is using my phone & iPad. I've read so many times that using a device like that right before going to bed interferes with sleep. I can't seem to drop that habit. A couple of things have helped a little. One is stopping caffeine by noon or 1 pm at the latest. I really should try to give it up altogether. The other is melatonin. It seems to help me get to sleep faster but I still wake up once or twice during the night.

Valerie-I think I agree about Total Body Giant Sets. At first I thought the upper and lower body premixes would be good, but that workout is better done as is. The ab bonus is very challenging.

Diane Sue-That's great that your allergies are better. I should try the Aller Max. I'll have to look at local bee pollen next year too.

Lori-Wow, that was a long day! SB Strong back is a good one, I'll have to add that in again soon. I'll check out the new total body barre workout too.

Carolyn-I love the 4 DS Kickboxing & Legs workout. Occasionally I will do the 4 DS total body premix. I really like the format of the strength training in this series.

Hi to Caitlin!
