Pentagenarians & Beyond: W/B 10/16

Hi Everyone,

Monday I did a 2 hour Spinerval, yesterday I did Muscle Max and today I did a 90 minute Spinerval.

Deb-we had a similar thing happen when we painted our bathroom last year. We picked out a color that we thought would work and when we got it home and started painting it had more of a pinkish hue than we wanted. We ended up painting another color over it. It's a small bathroom, not that big of a deal to paint twice.

Diane Sue-It's good that you are getting all the tests done right away and that your doctor is being so thorough.

Lori-I love the JS workouts. I've been using 1.5 lb ankle weights too and they are perfect for the walk based workouts.

Lynda-I bet the fall colors are beautiful there. It's good that your first fitting went well.

Valerie-great bike ride!

Caitlin-that's too bad about your high step topper. I hope you can find one.

Hi to Carolyn & Josie!

Judy

Caitlin, you might have to purchase the high step with risers to get the platform. That is what I had to do when I got mine. I have 10 risers now. I had the original step then purchased the high step with risers. Then when we moved my step risers got packed somewhere and I could not find them and ended up purchasing two risers to use with my step till I found the others. Way cheaper on Amazon. I am sorry about not being able to purchase just the topper. There is another on Amazon that is from Step Inovations that is about 2.00 less than the Step company one. It looks the same but a different color. I would want to make sure the risers were interchangeable with the step.

sometimes I think all the surviving deer live down in the suburbs with us, and that there aren't many left in the mountains because they are hunted into nonexistence. whatever. the big brave hunters are all out there, loaded up with beer and weapons. the area we would have hiked is too far in miles... and too steep for people to hunt, because they couldn't retrieve anything they shot. the hunters all drive along the roads and shoot from curbside. :( sad. we don't hike in areas that are "actually" hunted. too risky. we've had bullets go by too close before. but we drive thru them to get where we want to go. hopefully a silver Outback doesn't look like a deer.

diane sue your daughter is a physician, isn't she? I forgot what specialty. that is a huge benefit for you that she arranged an appt ASAP and that she will help by being a second set of ears. I will say that when it is about your own health, it's easy to miss things and a second set of trained ears is wonderful to have. so much can be communicated in so little time, it's easy to miss things.

Deb paint is cheap decorating. what else is cheaper? if it's not what you want, have it redone ASAP before you need to move furniture back in and then back out again.

Good morning,

No workout, maybe I will start back on Sunday. We were able to get the color mixed to another one, it is a nice cream color...whew...so glad that worked! The meeting last night was good, lots done and it only lasted 90 minutes...:). A beautiful fall day yesterday, in the 70's and sunny....probably the last one like that we will have.

Carolyn, thanks for the DVD info..I may go over to video fitness and take a look at that. You should put the High Step Topper on your wish list on Ebay...anytime in the future when someone lists one you will get an email.

Diane Sue, that was a fast turn around on the results... I hope you get some answers soon. Your poor nephew! I have not heard that kids or anyone not wearing a seatbelt. It's something we may have done as kids...of course, we were young when they put the law in...so it wasn;t uncommon then to have people stick their noses up at it...but not today.

Lynda, glad the dress fitting is going well. That Cardio Core circuit is the Live one? I like that workout too, especially the standing abs. The color was supposed to be a creamy beige...not sure if it was the lighting in the paint store, or what but both John and I thought it was beige...until we saw it on the wall. Keegan gets bothered by loud strange noises...when John was sanding the woodwork, he was awful...shaking and wanting to be anywhere but in the house.

Valerie, I can't believe your brother takes out the seatbelts in his cars! If he is ever stopped that would be a huge fine. We did get a pint of the new mixed color, took it home and had the painter put swatches of it in all the rooms before I went back and had the 3 gallons remixed. We should have done that the first time! I hope you have some blaze orange hiking clothing!

Lori, I could not imagine living with a pink living room for any length of time...and the hassle to repaint would drive me nuts! It's been bad enough this time. How are Gigi and Nilla doing?

Judy, great workouts! Yes, if it was a bathroom, I would not have been too upset....good thing I was home though...and the painter thought to ask me about it...if I was working, he might have done the whole room...ugh!

Any plans for the weekend?

Take care,

This is the first morning in a week that I have woke with noheadache or bad neck pain. I did the 15 minute relaxation stretch from barre amped before bed last night. I think it helped with some of the joints. Or maybe something is improving. Yesterday my knee that had the torn miniscus was throbbing and my hip low back was was achy. Today nothing and no fever again. It was nice crawling out of bed without groaning.

Valerie, yes my daughter is a PA in dermatology. IShe has been very helpful. If it wasn't for her I probably would have put off going to the doctor for a bit to see if things would subside. She was insistent and even called at 8 am the morning after I noticed the lymph nodes to make sure I got an appointment. She used to work with some of the doctors in our office when she was in medical school. Her family used that clinic for years but things have changed a lot there. The labs the switched to are not very good. The doctors seem lax for the most part. One of the hospitals bought into it. The Dr that owns it retired this year. The thing that made my daughter move her family to her friends(another Pa) husband who is internal medicine and pediatrics dr, is my clinic did not catch my granddaughter's kidney failure and her other daughter's anemia. It was a good thing my daughter had her medical background to recognize symptoms of kidney failure. My granddaughter was in the hospital for a week. Yes, my daughter has been a real blessing for me. I would hope they would notice a big vehicle like that. Having bullets come close would have me staying home. I don't mind if they are responsible and they are going to use the meat. Some people save money that way. I prefer to get my meat from the grocery store myself. There are just those that want to hunt and party at the same time and are ignorant.

Deb, I am glad that the paint color worked out for you. I thought there was seat belt usage laws. I always use mine and make sure riders are buckled in. I agree, I would think if someone was caught with no seat belts in their car they would be in trouble.

Caitlin, sorry, I can't find the same thing on cathe's site now. I thought it was current because it appeared with an ad for strong and sweaty. sometimes I think I know what I'm doing but I don't. :( have you looked at Target or walmart? I think they also came up. I am thinking about getting a regular step to go with the high step and if I come across anything I will let you know. I never thought I would use one enough. these moves are simple enough that maybe it would be useful. I will look for one compatible with the risers I already have.

Diane sue, I think.... follow your daughters advice and see this through. maybe all the exams and scans will show reasons for your neck discomfort as a side benefit. glad you feel better today. especially when you're not feeling 100%, a second set of ears is good. I am amazed at how much can get missed.

we were on out way out of an over night hike many years ago. a group of people were bear hunting. they didn't realize where we were ( on the well marked trail) and were shooting at a bear. we'd seen him and knew where he was. the shots were traveling through the trees below us. we could clearly see the path of the bullets as they ripped through the leaves below . it is as close to getting shot as I want to get. there was a loud waterfall so all out shouting didn't do any good. we did confront them when we got past the dangerous area and reported them to a ranger. bear season here starts in august and most people don't think about wearing orange until deer season in October. we have orange vests for that time.

Judy how you can stay on a spin bike for 2 hours is amazing. I am impressed and embarrassed I can't last an hour. somehow, outdoors is different for me. the intensity is variable, but the posture changes are constant and I think that's what does me in on the spin bike.

my brother is one of those people who does everything his own way. a "my way or the highway" kind of guy. somehow he managed to remove belts entirely. don't know what he did with the chimes, but is easier in older cars. we don't agree on anything. sometimes belts are annoying, mostly when you are driving very slowly or backing up...times when you don't need a belt... and the blasted incessant chimes make you want to smash them.

Deb, glad you got the paint re tooled to a better color. we are conservative color wise, and usually go with off white, cream, or tan. I am not good at intense colors and would not like to live with them. I am fine with color elsewhere although I have been burned with plumbing fixtures teaching me an expensive lesson. so now color is for towels or throws.

Today I did Muscle Endurance--so many leg presses!

Caitlin, I saw the mini step and the full step on Amazon. Walmart also has them.
Valerie if you decide to buy a full step I think you will get plenty of use from it. Many of the newer workouts use the step in a similar manner to that in Low Impact Sweat instead of dance and highly choreographed moves.

Diane Sue, so glad that you feel a little better. You are very fortunate to have your daughter's knowledge and guidance through the maze of medical care. The medical system is not easy these days. I have started going with my husband for his appointments so that both of us are hearing the same information.

Deb, I'm glad that you were able to get the paint color corrected. We had a similar situation once, but did not repaint the rooms since they were small bedrooms.

Hi to Lynda, Judy, Josie, and Lori.

that's what I'm thinking. funny when you look up the original fitness step there are pics of Kathy smith and Cathe. I never could do choreography but the simpler moves are OK. I have the high step & risers never used as much as intended. thanks for the support! I need to be sure a new step will fit the risers I have.

Hi everyone--

This morning I did live Fit and Firm (48 min.). Definitely an intermediate workout and just what I needed this morning--nothing too strenuous. I watched the debate last night and was a bit wound up and couldn't get to sleep right away, so I needed something less challenging. I liked the band work on this one.

Diane Sue, I'm glad you are feeling a bit better today. Has the swelling gone down a bit? I'm sure your daughter will be helpful with her expertise. I bet your nephew will have a lot of PT after the healing phase.

Judy, those are long workouts on the bike. You must have a lot of stamina.

Deb, good news on the paint. Yes, you are lucky to have been consulted early on rather than coming home to a PINK room!

Carolyn, I remember those leg presses on ME. Not sure I want to revisit those now that my knees are older.

Valerie, we have a lot of deer, coyotes, and a few bears on our land. Kim does let a few people hunt, but they are serious hunters--not interested in does and fauns, just the trophy buck, and they sit up in a stand in the early morning hours definitely not drinking beer. A young fellow who works for him has killed a bear or two and keeps trying to give him samples of the bear meat. But Kim says it looks very, very fatty and knows I wouldn't touch it.

Lori, I think Indian Summer is just about over. Sigh!

minor political comment coming up... be forewarned. I'm posting it separately, so you will not come across it if you don't want to.
Lynda we also watched and I guess when Trump said he might not accept the results of an election, I almost fell off my recliner..a hard thing to do! my DH is usually not very vocal but this did it!. could almost not believe what we heard.... sort of like he thinks the US is some kind of banana republic without orderly transitions between parties.

Valerie, I don't blame you for confronting those bear hunters and reporting them. Those car chimes can be annoying. I wish mine would have chimed when I had the car door opened and it was running. I locked my keys in with it running and had to find someone to come and get me, then I got home and I did not have my keys to get inside to get another key. My husband had me a second door key made. I would have been okay then because I had my purse.

Carolyn, good idea going to the doctor with your husband. Mine rarely goes. When he does and I ask what they said it is usually something like, he doesn't know or her is pregnant. I remember purchasing my first Step Company Step from a store here called Academy Sports. I had to return the first two because out of the box the rubber was coming off. The third lasted a few months and then I had tape and glue on it. Later I just ordered the platform direct from fitnesswholesale.com and that is the one that I have had for years. I don't even know if fitness wholesale still exists. I can never find a Step Company website anymore either.

Lynda, sometimes a workout that doesn't require lot of thought and pushing oneself is the perfect choice. The swelling is down a bit and my lymph nodes are not as sore to the touch today. It would be great if it cleared up. Fatty looking bear meat does not sound good to me at all.

Good evening ladies...this morning was JS 20 minute legs and jumping with weights for 15 mins. All I could do. GiGi was demanding attention.

Deb...sometimes we think GiGi gets it to leave Nilla alone than other times not so much. We are just going to keep them separated as much as possible. Glad you were able to correct the paint instead having to buy more. That worked out well.

Judy...I know I have said it before and I will keep saying it...you amaze me with your spinervals! I have 1lb, 1.5lb, 2lb and 5lb ankle weights. The 1.5 are most used. They are the perfect weight for me.

Valerie...agree...a coat a paint is a cheap way to freshen up a room. That is crazy about all the bullets so close to you. So scary. Glad you reported it. I wanted more rises and found a step with 2 rises each side for $20 on Craig's List.

Diane Sue...so glad you woke up feelin better. Hoping this continues. I really like the SB Stretch DVD.

Carolyn...that is wonderful you both go together for Doctors Appt. For Madeline (my bonus Mom) one of her children always goes with her and they record the entire appt. Afterwards she emails it to all of us who live out of state so we can all hear (She lives in Charlotte). Her doctor is so kind to let her record the visit. .

Lynda...very nice Kim let's people hunt. I'll check out the band work in that workout. I like band workout alot. Yup...bye nice weather!

Speaking of Madeline...I just booked another flight to visit her December 8th - 12th. Wanted to get back before the end of the year. She has accepted that she can not live alone, nor drive again. Was hard for her to do this but realizes this is the new normal for her. She was such an independent woman. Sad to see this.

Hi to Josie and Caitlin.

Hi Everyone,

Today I did a Spinerval and a short core workout. Tomorrow I should get back to the weights.

Deb-I think we had our last nice Fall days too. It was in the high 70's and sunny until today.

Valerie-I'm impressed with all of your outdoor biking and hiking! When I was doing the Spinerval Challenge, 4 or 5 years ago, I was doing a 3 hour long ride every week. I'm hoping to get back up to that and do the challenge again this year.

Lynda-Fit & Firm sounds like one I would like. I think Indian Summer is over here too. It rained all day and is getting colder.

Carolyn-Muscle Endurance is one of my favorites! I want to try the Muscle Endurance/Boot Camp premix.

Diane Sue-I'm glad that you are feeling better. I hope you feel even better tomorrow.

Lori-thanks! I hadn't been doing longer spinervals recently and decided to start back and try to get ready for the challenge in December.
It's good that you are going to see Madeline again in December. That is really nice how her children record her doctor's appointments. It is sad to see someone lose their independence :(

Hi to Josie & Caitlin!

Judy

Good morning,

I got the results from the Endoscopy yesterday, the DR's med assistant called me...all negative. Also need to see an ENT, there is a nodule on my vocal chord...he did mention this right after I got out of the procedure, but said it had nothing to do with the reflux problem. Great. No real answer to the reflux issue. He wants me to stay on the meds for another 3 months, then see him. I am not happy with this. Not sure what I am going to do.

Diane Sue, glad you had a better day yesterday, able to get up without any pain.

Caitlin, Agree with Valerie, try Walmart for the mini step. Did your full step survive the move? Lori' idea about Craig's list is good, but not sure if they have it where you moved to?

Valerie, yes...definitely smart to wear orange vests where you ride and hike. When John hunted, his friends only took a few bottles of beer and only had it after dinner, in the cabin. They were serious hunters, but only took deer that they knew they would eat. Since I do not like venison, after a few years, John never even took shots, he just enjoyed being out there, and watching nature. He sometimes just had a camera.

Carolyn, yes, it seems like if you don't have 2 people listening at a DR appointment etc, there is always confusion afterwards about what was said. I asked John to take notes after this recent procedure so we would not forget what was said.

Lynda, I have done that Live workout and felt the same, really solid intermediate workout.

Lori, good to keep them separated and maybe only allow them to be together if Gigi learns to give Nilla her own space. That is awesome that Madeline's Dr lets them record her visits. That has to be rare. So sad she cannot live alone etc, but great she has support during this time.

Judy, it has been raining here for 2 days now too...we must have gotten Michigan's weather, which is what usually happens.

Going to my friends for a marathon watch of the current season of Suits. She gets Netflix and is saving them on DVR for us to watch together.

Take care,

I feel pretty good today again. I slept better too which is a plus. I did Urban Rebounding Core Bound this morning, 38 minutes, 76 calories. This is really a lot of movement through stretching and things like dips off the rebounder into hip lifts, v sits etc.. I have always liked this just because it had more movement to it, a good stretch, and it is different. There is no jumping on this one. Last night I did Piyo Lower body define, which is really just yoga in my opinion. But it was stretching and limited my upper body work other than putting in some triceps pushups which I hate. I looked at Ice Sweat and thought about doing it, but I do not want to swing dumbbells around with my arms. I am afraid of setting off neck pain and shoulder pain. If I did it it would have been just the floor workout. I just want to do light work to keep the lymphatic system as healthy as it can be at the moment and stiffness from lying and sitting around alleviated some.

Deb, I am sorry the test results were negative. Did they say anything about the nodule and what to do about it if anything? I hate being stuck relying on meds with no definitive answer.

we are just about under water. lots of rain. typical for this time of year but tedious. we put up new antenna between rainy times. getting great local channel reception, mainly for news, but now channel (PBS) doesn't come in like it did on the other antenna. always something!. we are getting a booster to add. Now I can get some TV in the basement.

did Metabolic total body yesterday afternoon.

we'd just watched two episodes of the Good Wife and were winding down for the night when the power went out. no wind, no reason. my neighbor texted saying it was widespread. she lives higher and could not see lights below. no explanation. it was out for a couple hours. woke up with the lights on. we didn't remember what lights we had on.

Deb, that is good news although I'm sure you want a reason. DH has had intermittent reflux problems but it settled down. he drinks only a little coffee only in AM, has the head of bed elevated, and doesn't eat anything spicy. no carbonated beverages. doesn't bother him now. he can eat tomatoes, oranges, etc. so sometimes there is nothing definite.

I think a lot of the hunters are like your husband.. out for the scenery and fresh air. I also dislike venison! UGH! tried it numerous ways ( Wisconsin was big on deer products) but I'd rather eat a boiled boot. I would not eat bear either.

ETA diane sue, we must have posted almost at the same time. good to know you fare feeling better.

Hi everyone--

This morning I did live Crush It (42 min.). This one always surprises me with its intensity. It seems much better cardio than the floor Sweat--maybe more repetitions and less time between hiits.

Deb, overall your news is good, but I'm sure it's frustrating not to have a definitive answer about the heartburn. Have fun with Suits!

Diane Sue, I'm glad you feel better again. Don't you have some additional testing today? A good idea to stay away from anything that might fire up your neck and shoulders.

Valerie, I can't wait for this election to be OVER. It's been 19 months since the first Republican candidate threw his hat in the ring--Ted Cruz. If we spent as much time and money on doing something valuable for the country as we do on our elections...........It's just crazy! What does the minimal cable cost in your area? It's very cheap here, and I would think it would solve a lot of your problems.

Lori, I think it's wonderful that you will be spending more time with Madeline. I remember flying back and forth to Oklahoma to spend time with my oldest sister when she was dying and I treasure the long conversations we had and what I could do for her. My other sisters went so quickly that I felt helpless and the grieving was so much worse--many regrets that I didn't have with my oldest sister.

Judy, what is the challenge in December--a Spinerval marathon? 3 hours is a long time as it is.

Have a great weekend everyone!

Lynda, we were up to $175.00 a month for land line, internet and basic cable. dropping the cable brought us to about $100. DH would drop the land line but I won't. think there is a local channel option recently that is less expensive, and I would opt for that if this doesn't work. lots of people have dropped cable. we are pay for Netflix streaming, and all the antennas aren't free either although if you buy one and it doesn't work, you can pack it up and return it for free. every time the cable bill came there was an increase of some kind, and it was a long negotiation to cut it back again. I don't miss that process. I also resented paying for dozens of channels of total crap. we like streaming and get a lot of things cable never gave us, but getting PBS and local news channels is important to me. I don't care about pro sports. I know that's a big problem for some people when they drop cable. the new antenna is smaller and much less likely to blow down. sigh.... we shall see!.

Yes, it seems like the campaign has been going forever. a few weeks left and hopefully peaceful resolution. not sure how quietly into the night he will go.

Hi Everyone,
This morning I did the Live Crush It Low Impact. Thanks for the recommendation--I really enjoyed it.

Have a great day.
