Nia Shanks

I was thinking of doing a metabolic workout tomorrow - the Cathe live from today (Supercuts with blasts) - glad to hear it's possible after Nia! I'm also thinking of digging out some 20 minute Jade Teta metabolic workouts - I got about 30 of them (free) when I signed up for his e-mails. They're quite good fun (in that masochistic sort of way that we lot have fun)! Mind you, I enjoy Nia's finishers, and am trying to work my way through them all.

I've had an enforced rest day today, as my puppy needed an operation yesterday - it took 2 vets 2 and a half hours!!! He's a bit sore today, so it was a quiet day with enforced rest for us both. Karen - only one of my dogs is OK in the rain. One won't even put her nose outdoors if it's drizzling. She's happy swimming though....strange dog.

I can't quite believe that I'm about to start week 4 of Nia. I'm planning the de-load week already. I think I'll be going a lot lighter on the big lifts (the ones that tax the central nervous system), but only a little lighter on the other lifts. It's flown by!

Rain, rain, go away! We're getting a big thunderstorm here in an hour or so. Last night was a big downpour. All of a sudden. We were outside -- my DD got scared -- it was cute. :)
Did you do a metabolic DVD, or just your own jam?
Inspired by Justine's comment re: HiiT training (and how Cathe's HiiTs aren't 'true' HiiTs), I decided to crank my stroller nap-walk up a notch and lulled my little darling to sleep with 30 secs sprinting followed by 45 secs walking for ~20 mins. She's still snoozing. ;)
I have really been focusing on perfecting my deadlift form and have stripped weight off the bar to really hammer the good habits. Loving it so much, feels great. I got a lot out of Tony Gentilcore's ~10 min video on DL setup/form.
Hope you're all well!
Roz
ETA: Justine, I just saw your post -- so sorry to hear about your pup! Is he OK?
Oh my, Supercuts with Blasts -- that's now on the top of my list! Maybe tomorrow. Though Cathe cardio is so leg-intensive, it does sometimes interfere with squats (which would be the following day).
Oh, I'm loving adding DB swings (I don't have KB) as finishers!

Hope your puppy is doing well. Mine are ok with rain, however they hate the thunder. Such babies

It should be you who's asleep, not your DD!

That Tony Gentilcore video is amazing - thanks for putting me onto him. His squat video is great, too.

My favourite finisher so far? 100 squats, 50 push-ups and 25 chin-ups. For time! I was doing fine until the chin-ups.....

Puppy is doing great - except he has to wear a lampshade...so he keeps bumping into things. Hilarious, although I shouldn't laugh.
He LOVES thunder...but he's a gundog, so he's supposed to like loud bangs. In fact, he gets rather excited.

Is your puppy a golden retriever mix? I noticed the feathers on her legs. My dogs don't do well with a lampshade either. She's a cutie.

he's a cocker spaniel- but an English one...I think think they're quite different from American ones- he's from a working strain, rather than show. He is a cutie- almost 1 year old. My other is a lurcher. I lost 4 (!) within the last 2 years :'( what sort do you have?

That's my favorite, too! I plan to do it once a week and try to improve my time a little each week. Agreed that I was doing pretty well, time-wise, till I hit chinups. How do you fit that one into your lifting week? Last week I did it the day after squats, followed by a rest day, followed by UB.

So sorry to hear about losing four pups in two years... that's terrible, Justine. Hugs.
You've mentioned dog training before -- do you just mean you're walking your dogs (or they're walking you!), or do you train them for something specific?

I did that particular finisher right after doing my squat / glute bridge / hanging knee raise! Killer! I suddenly had masses of energy that day. I try to mimic the lifting I've just done - eg a barbell complex with overhead press on a shoulds day etc. Normally I'm too pooped after a lower body w/o....but sometimes I just have a bit of a zip in my step from an awesome lift. ;)

Re dogs - I always have working dogs, mainly gundogs. They get a long off-leash walk in the morning, and then a walk / training session in the afternoon. They compete in scurries etc in the Summer, and are working properly on shoots Sept - March. It'll be my pups first shooting season this Autumn.....

I've no idea whether the UK is anything like North America re working dogs. I train by positive reinforcement only. Absolutely no use of electric collars / scolding. It's hugely enjoyable, and gets me out and about all Winter!

I just did the 100/50/25 'finisher' today and cut 2+ mins off my time! Woo! But those last 10 chinups are slow going...

I wish my DD wanted to go out for 2 hours of walking in the winter! Though I imagine you've got milder winters there... we were absolutely snowed in this last year.

Are her workouts on dvd? Or is this just by her website or books? I've been reading some of this thread and was wondering what she is all about, because until now, I've never heard of her. Too bad I don't live near you, I would love to do a 2 hr walk with someone!!!

Hi Firemedic - we've all bought the Beautiful Badass Manual from Nia - you get 19 different programmes as a pdf, with hyperlinks to demo videos. Nia's demos are fantastic - her form is perfect, and her pointers really, really helpful. There is also a pdf book of 'finishers' - basically cardio / metabolic short (10mins or so) workouts, which sound very easy...but are very tough! If you subscribe to her e-mail list you'll get a free mini-badass programme, which is worth looking at. She has other bundles available too.
I'm only on my 4th week, and already I'm seeing a huge change in my body, both in appearance and ability. Usually it takes me quite a bit longer to see real changes. I've done many, many programmes (Cathe inc STS a few times, Beach Body inc P90X etc, Bob Harper etc etc) and this is my favourite so far! I think I'll be doing Nia's programmes for a long time yet.

Roz - 2 minutes off that finisher is amazing! I'm going to be doing it for the second time today. I'll only be shooting for 1 minute faster, though ;)

Oh, and it's worth mentioning that the reps are low - never (I think) more than 12, and often just a single. 5 or so seems to be the sweet spot for me

Justine, which of Tony's squat videos are you talking about? I think he has several (?), just wondering which you found most helpful...
Thanks!

Also, I remember him talking about setting up under the bar. How it's wrong to just get the bar on your back, step forward and then get into position - start by squeezing your rear delts, get your chest up, then get the bar on your back. Really works for me, especially as my weights are getting heavier. (still nowhere near Karen's 235 though)

Yeah! I love his emphasis on setup for squats and DLs.
I'm actually considering switching from floor press to bench press when I begin a new phase (lower reps = heavier weights), as I'm getting a little nervous about my squat stands' ability to hold the bar. The part that holds the bar for squats, OH presses is fine, but the lower pegs/catches/whatever are getting weak. Thoughts on this? I feel like I need to read up on bench press/proper foot position/etc.

interesting question- nia says the bench press is much more technical than the floor press, but doesn't say why. Would you be using a narrow bench, or a step? I think the step gives more shoulder support due to the width. I read up quite a bit on bench pressing, as it's a weaker lift for me. There's lots of techniques....arched back, using your glutes, pushing through the heels, trying to bend the bar etc. I'm on my phone at the mo- I'll post some of the better articles I found when I'm home.
