New Runners Check-In; All Runners Welcome! August 10, 2009

Laugh out loud funny!

Even if the six of us checked in 10 times a day (I'm not, honest! lol) for the last twenty days, we would only have 1200 views.... But there are what, 4,655 views!

Holy guacamole bat man!

I think somedays I check it more than 10 times. I always check one last time before I get off the computer for the day to make sure I didn't miss anything. :)

not any lighter drat!

Well, lets sing the I'm going to the doctor blues! I thought I was better but every time I eat I hurt so bad I could cry (we need a smiley thats singing) Two weeks is too long to go without eating like a normal person. I'm getting checked out for either a food allergy or viral/bacterial problem. My leg is getting better very s l o w l y. I expect to be back in the saddle (metaphorically, unfortunately I don't have riding rights to any of the ponies in the ranch/my neighborhood.) by next week. I was scheduled for a 10k in October but I don't see that happening. I just want to feel good, get a good job, move out of my parent's home, and be happy (in the now.)

I'm glad all of you suggested I go to the doctor, I just hadn't wanted to. I don't love doctors very well. I had precocious puberty at 3 and well being poked at that age hurts. One of the phlebotomists actually scratched my bone taking blood at the time so I have an aversion. Which is funny because if I had been good with math I would have been a doctor :D:p its too bad I'm not losing weight with the not eating thing just goes to show that eating is the only way to lose weight.

Thats like soap opera status! I know I'm only looking maybe 2x a day so who is it? :D

Count me in on the All Women half marathon - but wouldn't you like to come to California and do the Nike Women's full marathon, running through the streets of SF?
:D

I have spent a lot of time in SF and all I have to say, ouchie my hiney hurts just contemplating that jog!

Oh, Alisha I am so glad you are going to a doctor!

I have doctor aversions too. I even had my babies at home!

(i'm still waiting for puberty to start - I look like a 10 year old! ha ha!)

I am making a doctor appt today too. I have been waiting on my sister, but I think I just need to get in to see someone.

Let us know how it goes.:)

Hi ladies,

I went to the fair yesteday and got my gourmet caramel apple. It is dark chocolate, cashews, almonds, caramel and apple. I can't wait to eat it.

The fair was fun but so crowded.

I also got a run in. I was going to try week 3 again, but I decided to just see how far I could run. I did about 30 minutes at a very slow pace. I am probabley the slowest runner ever.

I'm debating if I want to start another round of STS or not.

Todays plan is a workout just not sure which one yet.
Catch up on my soaps from last week. Maybe clean the house a little.
Take a nap. Ahh I love vacation!!!:D

So what is everyone up to today?

Hi Jenn, your apple sounds delicious!!!

Congrats on getting your run in, who cares about your pace, you are your only competition!

I'm starting STS this morning! At this point in my lifting I really need the structure. Want to join in?

Some families are military families, or police families, or firefighters....I think your family is the first Postal Family I have ever heard of! How inspiring there are three generations!

As I write this there is three hot air balloons lifting off in the valley. Pretty.

After much debate we decided to name the kitty Marbles. She looks like a marble loaf! (She's tortoiseshell)

Hi Christine!

We used to have a tortoiseshell cat, we named her Shelly. I take it that since she went from Sassy to nameless to Marbles that she is a keeper?

We have a couple of bobcats living behind our house, this morning we saw the male (my neighbor has named him Blacklips) carrying a white furry animal in his mouth. I know it is in their nature, but I can't help wondering who is missing their black and white kitty this morning.:(

24 York Peppermint Patties (small)
1 1/2 cups butter or margarine (melted)
3 cups sugar
1 Tbsp. vanilla
5 eggs
2 cups all-purpose flour
1 cup cocoa
1 Tsp. baking powder
1 tsp. salt

Heat oven to 350 deg. Grease a 13x9x2 baking pan
Combine flour, cocoa, baking powder and salt - set aside
Stir butter, sugar and vanilla. Beat in eggs until well blended.
Gradually add flour mixture to butter mixture.
Reserve 2 cups of batter and spread remaining batter in bottom of pan. Arrange pepppermint patties on top of batter 1/2 apart, then spread remaining batter over patties.
Bake 50-55 mins. or until brownies pull away from sides of pan.

These are exquisitely to die for!

Enjoy!

Tricia

Just looking at the ingredients is putting me into diabetic shock! lol! wowzer.

So tell me, you can eat one of these and feel fine? I swear, I would be on the couch - out cold - for an hour!!!

ok. I'm off to lift weights, I really am.

I just knocked out disc 1. I am doing the 3 month rotation, if all goes as planned we'll be done before the holidays!

Now that I am finished, I am regretting not having started sooner! I love STS, the whole program is amazing!

Dr are stuped

This guy was so damned arrogant, you should have seen how pissed off my mother was! He did not even look at the page I typed up with all of my symptoms, everything I have tried, and what has/has not worked. What an ass. He told me it was mind/body connection and that I had IBS. I made him give me a blood test for gluten allergy. He did not even know that you could get blood tests for allergies. He prescribed metamucil (I eat steel cut oat meal dummy!) and pepcid. He told me to eat normally. I can't eat! It causes so much pain I'm literally in tears. Forget it, I'm going to see an acupuncturist.

I stopped at the grocery store and got the pepcid. I will give his protocol two weeks. In the meantime, what am I supposed to do? There was no prescription for anything to help me sleep. I am down to 3 hours of sleep because of the pain. I hate this guy. Seriously, why do I even pay for my Kaiser insurance? I know its so I can see my gyn and get emergency room care for car accidents (which I don't get) and broken bones (which I do get.)

Anyway. I got some kefir which is supposed to help the gut and I got a thing called "Medical Food" for IBS.

I'm reduced to a few wheat free pretzels and a Naked probiotic drink and a probiotic chocolate bar (Attune?) its horrible how am I supposed to eat low carb on this? I can't digest anything. He seemed to think it was 'nervousness" bull shit! I'm not a nervous nelly at all, really, I used to work in the film industry, those types don't last long.

My experiences with western medicine have not been good. It was alternative medicine that cured (I mean cured not just helped.) my back/neck (Yoga and chiropractic care) my interstitial cystitis (bilberry when surgery did not do a thing.) and exercise has worked on my insulin resistance (they told me to eat low fat at the doctors office, what idiots!)

Most doctors ain't even poop.

So, how am I supposed to go to work? If I have to go outside the system for a GI person or an allergist I will. I am going straight to the acupuncturist who said he had good results with PCO, insulin resistance, and IBS. neat. what you bet it works? i bet it does.

I'm so tired. And. I can't sleep. I lay there with the lights out. With my ipod and my eyes are wide open. My brain is quiet but sleep does not come.

Oh My!!!! I am so sorry Alisha!

Listen, PM Heather "lightening16" she has dealt with IBS/Gluten/Celiac Disease, she can help you get pointed in the right direction. The acupuncturist is a great idea, I think this will at least help you sleep.

In the meantime DO NOT EAT oats unless they are certifiably processed in an oats only processor. And the pretzels - make sure on the package it states "processed in a wheat free facility."

HTH

Alisha, I'm sorry about your experience with your doctor! It really is hard to find a doctor who cares and who takes the time to really get to know what is going on. I know you don't care for doctors right now, but I would really recommend seeing a gastroenterologist (sp?) if you can. They will know more about your symptoms and what tests may need to be performed.

Janis, how was your first STS workout? Did you find that you were able to lift heavier than last time? I like the name Shelly, that's cute! I'm still not 100% sure if she's going to be a keeper (if it were up to me, she would be! :)). But we'll see how it goes trying to find her another home. I get sad even thinking about it!

Jenn, your apples sound delicious!! I love apples but I am allergic to them. :( I might compete with you in being the slowest runner ever! :p It's okay though, like Janis said!

Tricia, thanks for the recipe!! I am defintely going to try making those!

Morningstar, how are you doing today?

I feel yucky today because I ate way too much junk over the weekend. My BIL was visiting with his wife so we met them out for lunch AND dinner. Plus, my hubby and I went out for breakfast yesterday. It was way too much grease for me, blah! I am detoxing today, LOL.

Today's workout was Jari Love's Ripped to the Core (thanks Janis!! :D). I really enjoyed this one, I thought the compound moves were pretty creative. I am looking forward to my first run of Week 8 tomorrow!

more info

So I went to the health food store Elliott's in Folsom and got some great advice. They were so helpful. The lady who works there really thought it was the gluten sensitivity based on the trouble with thinking (I'm having hard time with words) and she gave me some slippery elm lozenges and a handout with some test strips for PH because of the history of bladder/kidney infection and how baking soda helped with that. She was so nice and had the same level of uselessness out of doctors that I had. She also gave me some iodine drops for my thyroid. I'm having less pain today but that may be because I haven't eaten hardly anything but probiotic bars, drinks, and some gluten free pretzels. I was so hungry I thought I was going to cry. It does make you wonder if I was losing weight on low carb because I was not eating any wheat but when I added in the wheat/oatmeal if thats why my weight loss stalled, because I had a food sensitivity. I read somewhere that allergies will stall weight loss.

But, the good part is my weight was not too bad (183 in the afternoon in my clothes and shoes.) and my hr is down to 58. WOO HOO! Thats the power of Cathe workouts! And my blood pressure was 98/52. Yippee!

Also, the lady at the store told me that there are people who are sensitive who don't show up positive for the gluten test.

Janis- Thanks for the info

Life- Thanks for the info

maybe its me bumping us with my three posts lol.

Hi Ladies!

Alisha - I hate that you had such a bad and unhelpful experience at the doctor's office today! It's near impossible to get them to listen anymore! I would try another doctor if this doesn't help you any. I think the acupuncturist is a good idea.

Christine - The brownies are absolutely sinful, but worth it for a little treat - and do I mean little! They pack a lot of chocolate in a little square! They were mostly for my DH, but I do get these urges to bake! Thank goodness, not too often!

Wish I could do STS with you! I'm dying to get it! Just waiting, waiting . . . 51 more days until my birthday - God, I'll be 48!!!!! I think I'll go into a depression when I hit 50!

Got a great CC run in tonight! Did Vol. 2. I love the visuals in that one! Sean does a great job of occupying your mind during this interval run! I hardly felt it! Of course, it was nice and cool out, too! THAT felt amazing in itself!

Tomorrow is at least 3 miles, but I'll try to hit 3.3-3.5. Got to keep up with my DH! He runs everyday at least 3-3.5 miles a day! Can't let myself get too far behind him! Unless we're running for time, then it's hopeless. I still can't keep a good pace for longer than one mile at a time. After that, I start to slow down and down . . . I think we should have a competition for SLOWEST runner!

Hope everyone else is doing well! Keep those running shoes smokin'! Catch you on the flip side!

RapidBreath sorry the dr was such an arse. I hope you find something and someone to help you quickly.

Tricia you are only as old as you feel. ;) I think I'm going to aim for cc tomorrow. I have a craving for Sean in my ear. :p Are you running everyday now?

Christine, I am really slow people could walk fast and keep up with me. The funny thing is though with cc I will push myself to do the sprints and run at faster pace but when I jog I go slow and push myself to see how long I can go.

Janis I did not get an sts workout in today. I will start tomorrow.

Morningstar how was your day?

Today I did nothing. I ate something that disagreed with my tummy so I took a long nap, then Shelby and her friend wanted to go swimming so I took them to the pool, then took her girlfriend home(she lives an hour away) by the time we got home it was 8pm. Oh well tomorrow will be STS disc 1+abs and maybe a cardio coach workout.

Jenn

Hey guys,

Yesterday was absolutely bat-guano crazy, but I got my run in- at 3:40am! It was week 6, workout 1 and I did it twice (do I need to bother saying that anymore? tell ya what- I'll just mention it if I DON'T do it twice!) I covered 9km. This morning I knew I couldn't do a heavy strength routine, so I had planned to do Jillian's No More Trouble Zones, which is as light as I get. But I couldn't even drag myself out of bed to do that. I'm supposed to do a staff get together tonight, but I don't really want to, so maybe I'll blow it off and work out instead. Or maybe I'll find a way to work out at work before the get together starts.

I'm so tired because of work, not because of yesterday's run. The media was better than expected yesterday, we had a scrum, but it wasn't as aggressive as they can get. But it was a long, contentious meeting and I really have to pay attention to every little word that is spoken by over 20 people. It is logistically a very difficult meeting to arrange and there are tons of small details that can't be forgotten. By the end of them, I don't have two brain cells to rub together.

I have another one of those meetings today, but this one is smaller. No media, but still contentious and still requires all of my brain power. I guess I will have to decide at the end of it whether I need a staff pizza/wine night more than I need a workout. With my hiking trip coming up, I need to think about making sure I get rest this week too.

Ladies, here was my Christmas wish list for my family (can you see the obsession peeking through?)

The Garmin is what I am really lusting after lately- all this talk you have of covering a particular amount of territory during your runs, when I only have Google maps, makes me jealous!

Lately I've been eating tons of salt and white flour (just what I had in the house, for complicated reasons). Yet, people keep telling me I look like I'm losing weight. I'm not, it's stable at the moment, but it's weird, because salt and carbs usually make me bloat and I usually look bigger, not smaller. It's probably settling elsewhere than my face. Or maybe I've been needing all the salt and carbs for the running. The L-Glutamine has really helped- all the carbs haven't made my blood sugar sky rocket or plummet. I really recommend it. It doesn't seem to stop me eating carbs, but I haven't felt the need to eat the entire loaf of bread (maybe only half!) and I don't feel like crap when I do eat it.

Alisha, your doc is guano too. I know a lot about some alternative therapies, especially acupuncture, and I'm not sure how much help that will be for you, except to relieve some immediate pain. If you go to an acupuncturist that is also a TCM practitioner of some skill, you may be able to get some herbs that will help. But a TCM diagnosis is very different from a western diagnosis, and you may still not know what's wrong with you and it may not actually help. If you do take herbs prescribed by a TCM practitioner, ensure that you tell your western doctor which ones you are taking and the dosage- and make sure the TCM practitioner tells you (sometimes the labels are in Chinese and lots of TCM practitioners keep their herbal formulas secret, regardless of potential harm to the patient. They also can cost a lot, especially if you buy them directly from a practitioner; even from a herb store, they may jack up the price if you are not Chinese). My recommendation is actually to find a way to get a second western medical opinion and find out what the heck is wrong.

Christine, I haven't pulled out Jari for a long time, but Ripped to the Core is my favourite of hers, if I remember correctly. Ripped 1000 always left me with a headache and feeling like crap, but now that I do a lot more cardio and am more comfortable with circuit workouts using cardio, I may pull it out again. I don't know, though, all those reps leave me cold.

Janis, I did love STS, but at the same time, I don't think I really liked following a rotation for that long- it was so hard on my body to always have to work out on schedule even if I shouldn't have. Now I use STS as a resource of amazing workouts that I can pull out and do whenever I want, and really shock my body, rather than following a rotation with them. I think I have more fun with strength when I can play with it and change things up on the fly. Do you prefer the structure of a rotation?

Tricia, after your recent posts, I am just glad I don't like peppermint and chocolate together- I have a feeling that I wouldn't be able to resist those brownies otherwise!

Jenn, are you actually going to do CardioCoach and start STS today? Well, that'll be interesting! Shall we send the shovel now - you know, the one to help you up off the floor?

Okay, well, gotta go. Have a fantastic day, and I'll let you know tomorrow if I gave in to the pizza and wine or made a healthier choice. I hope you all have a fantastic day!

By the way, an absolutely awesome book on running is John Bingham's No Need for Speed. So incredibly motivating and inspiring and funny and helpful.
