New Runners Check-In; All Runners Welcome! August 10, 2009

Well, I finally saw my sports doc, and apparently I have an anterior-rotated left pelvis that's causing my hip pain and maybe other pain too. So I gotta go into see my CAT- Certified Athletic Therapist, and she'll give me some exercises and stretches to sort me out. No idea what caused it though, except maybe an imbalance while doing something like a plie squat, maybe. She had to put me through a lot of motions to figure it out; nothing was triggering it at all. Finally I was lying on my back and she just started feeling around my front pelvis with her fingers (hurt- I got bones there!) and figured it out then.

I don't think she gets much exercise herself; she was discouraging me from doing HIIT training and she really doesn't look in great shape. I think she knows her stuff, though, and I like my CAT a lot- she's been very helpful in the past, and since it's through a hospital, they only charge $20 per session (the sports doctor visit is free with my provincial health coverage).

Today I picked up a book called "Designing Resistance Training Programs" and another one about learning to run half-marathons and marathons. Really, it was like they were calling out to me. How could I resist, when the universe so clearly put them in my path for me to find?

ROFLAO!:D you lost your mind but you found a toonie! Such a lucky lucky girl!

Talkin' in third person is further proof you've lost it!

Home cooking - no problemo - what are your faves? Japanese, Thai, Indian, chinese, mexican, California!!!....don't say Canadian ;) (I just saw a new designation for regional cooking "Pacific Northwest", funny.)

Let's see, Greek, Mexican, Thai, Indian, Carribbean, Ethiopian and whatever cuisine has lots of cheese, veggies and chocolate. Yep, that should do it. Be sure to bring lots!

Janis, what a nice treat after the last few days to be able to have the time to get caught up with your blog. You truly are one of my favourite people on this forum. Actually, you all are! It is really a pleasure to interact with you all every day. Sometimes I take a moment at work and just read what you guys are up to, even if I don't usually have time to respond.

RB - Ooh, I forgot you were only supposed to add 10% at a time! Oops! It went great though! Probably because it was cooler and the humidity was down so much, plus I didn't work out yesterday. So, is that 10% per day, per week or what? Refresh my memory, please.

Janis - Sounds like you had a beautiful rest day! I love hummingbirds! Used to have some show up at my house back in GA.

Morningstar - I'm excited to hear that your C5K is going so well!

I saw a run on Cool Runnings that I wish I were ready for! It's the All Women Marathon (or Half?) in Maine. It's in November, but the path is absolutely breathtaking! It runs directly along the coast and through some very scenic residential area. I guess I have to look forward to it for next year! There's no way I could be ready for that in 2 months! I'll be lucky to get a good paced 5k in this year!

Morningstar - Don't know how I missed your post! Wow! I hope they can get you feeling better with those exercises! The books you picked up sound good! Let me know what you think of them after you finish! I love when things just fall into place for me like that!

And to everyone else I missed just now - hope all of you were able to enjoy beautiful weather today!

Good evening ladies,

Sounds like everyone has had a very productive day. On I the other have not. I walk up with all intentions of going for a run but I had a not great night of sleep, so I chose to sleep the extra hour before getting up for work.

Maybe tomorrow I will get a workout in. I seem to be stuck in week 3 of this darn program.

Hang in there! Get some good rest tonight! You'll fee more like running tomorrow! :) There's really no rush to get to the end! I felt so . . . I don't know quite how to put it . . . lonely? . . . when I finished with the training! Not quite sure why or what it was, but it took me about a week to get over it! I guess it was like a crutch - a Linus blanket! YES, that's it! It was my blankie for getting into running and it was hard to let go!

Definitely lots and lots! :D

Ethiopian! Ok, but only if we can sit on the floor and eat with our hands! I need to practice my flat bread on the grill skills. Speed is everything. I haven't made anything ethiopian in a decade or more! Lentils lentils lentils.

Carribean....we traveled through a few years ago.....hmmm....lots and lots of coconut milk....and mangoes...yummmmy my favorite. (are you sure you wouldn't like some shellfish too?)

CHOCOLATE - now we're talking. I just devoured chocolate covered strawberries....callebaut chocolate too. triple delicious.:D:D

I feel the same:) on both counts.

It is such a pleasure to be able to relate to people who are interested in the same things i.e. fitness, plus who have interesting thoughts, ideas, life experiences, perceptions, goals, histories ....everyone is so unique. I find it refreshing! :)

That's what I need - a cat!

Ouch!

Do share what you learn! The first book - especially how to stay on task and not take too long of a rest. And the second book - how to get from 6 miles to 13, er....9.6 k to 21 k.

Hi Tricia,

I had a lovely rest day - two naps!!! Who knew I was so tired. Actually laying around made my back achey.

Count me in on the All Women half marathon - but wouldn't you like to come to California and do the Nike Women's full marathon, running through the streets of SF?

ROUTE: The course takes you past so many scenic areas that many runners carry cameras. From Union Square, you run through the Financial District and Fisherman's Wharf; along the bay with unobstructed views of Alcatraz and the Golden Gate Bridge; up into the eucalyptus and cypress forests of Presidio National Park; five miles apiece in Golden Gate Park, along Ocean Beach, and around Lake Merced; and finish on the ocean. The city's steep, cable-car hills are avoided, but three hefty climbs at miles six, eight, and 11 mean you should run to have a good time, not to run one.
ENTERTAINMENT: There are 39 stations with live music, DJs, and cheering squads, plus two more bands at the finish.

I'm not up to the full marathon either! But I can dream.

But, hey, we're almost capable of doing the Bay to Breakers. 7.46 miles of creativity!

Hey ladies,

Today I did the second workout of week 5- the eight minuters. Did I giterdun? You betcha! Twice- and I still felt after each interval that I could have kept going and that the breaks were too long. I like the music a lot better this week. After each podcast I add music of my own to cool down and stretch, and this workout ended with Rihanna's Breakin' Dishes- probably my favourite of her songs.

I'm thinking seriously about training for a 5k race, then 10k, and then heading into half-marathon and marathon territory. Think how amazing that would feel at the age of 39, 40, 41 (whenever I get there) to do that for the first time!

Janis, how are you liking the new apocalyptic-end-of-the-universe-and-it's-still-standing-along-with-Cher-and-the-cockroaches vehicle? And of COURSE we can sit on the floor and eat with our hands- just not my floor. Trust me, that would not be a good idea.

Tricia, I think it is supposed to be 10% per week, but hell, C25K jumps from 8 minutes to 20 minutes, so what's up with that?

Alisha, did you enjoy your rest day?

Okay guys, my stomach is growling and I gotta go eat. To everyone I missed, and to everyone I didn't, Happy Friday!

Janis - I was looking at the Nike Marathon on my Nike page! Looks like a blast! Guess we'll both have to work up to it! Maybe next year? We can do the Nike in SF, then the All Women's in York, ME! Coast to coast! Of course we have to get the whole crew in on this - what fun would that be?

Morningstar - I'm so glad you're feeling that good about the C5K runs! I started getting that same way by the time I was done! I'm ready for a 5K just about, then I want to start training for a 10K, a half, etc.! I just want to keep going! :D

Also, I must add, if you two are planning an ethnic feast, count me in! I adore all kinds of ethnic foods as long as it doesn't have any cheese in it. That's the one thing I just can't bring myself to eat! Makes me gag!

Anyway, I hope everyone has a great Friday and a superb weekend!

Okay, I keep trying to post responses to your personals and this new kitty we're looking after keeps jumping on the keyboard and messing things up. She seriously did it like 3 times now! Let me try this quickley again....

Morningstar - you go girl!! When I started doing longer runs I was happy to get them done once, let alone twice! I look forward to hearing how your 20 min run goes!

Janis, 2 naps in one day sounds like my kind of day! ;) I agree though that when I relax for a day, my body feels achy! I guess we are just used to exercising!

Tricia, I'm starting to wonder myself what I will do after C25K is over! It's like I don't want it to end!! I'm actually thinking of doing a "walk half marathon" training program. I know it's not as hardcore as running, but I love walking with my dog and I think that is something I would enjoy (in between my runs of course ;))

Alisha, I'm glad you are finally starting to feel better! I think your musically talented background is awesome, btw! I used to play the violin when I was much younger (under 10 yrs old), then we moved to a town where the school didn't offer violin. :( I ended up taking on the clarinet, which did not compare to the violin, IMO.

Jenn, it's tough to do any kind of workout with lack of sleep! I think you made a wise decision to go back to bed for some more zzzz's!

Yesterday's workout was my 2nd run from C25K Week 7. It was another 25 minutes. It felt really good though since the weather is much cooler now! I guess I was wrong about it being hot yesterday because it was actually really nice and breezy! After my run I was busy with our foster kitty and spending the afternoon with my grandma. Today is my hubby's company BBQ, too bad it's going to rain, but he's getting out of work early so I'm looking forward to that!

PS- MY cats are NOT happy about the new little kitty in their territory! :p

That's great! I get all the cheese to myself!

Just wanted to post my workout for today. I did the first 5 intervals of IMAX, then I did ab work and stretching from Slim in 6 called "Slim & 6 Pack" and "Slim & Limber". Now I'm off to get my chores done before the BBQ!

Janis, I wanted to thank you again!! My package is coming cross country! I'm looking forward to it! :)

Good Morning! (it still is here!)

My ankle is getting better, I think I am going to give it one more day before I attempt to run on it. I am green with envy about everyone's runs! I am chomping to get back at it! Gosh darn it.

Morningstar - you're so young!!! I am loving my new car. It does feel like it will outlive the end of the world. LOL. I especially like how unassuming it is.

Tricia - yes, the whole crew running a marathon! I love the idea. I do have to work on running outside on different turfs/surfaces...but first order of business is getting this ankle healed. I think it is 'tibialis posterior tendinitis'.

Christine - Hi! I am glad Sassy is doing much better! Your other pets are just jealous, they'll get over it! Are you keeping her, or trying to find her a new home? Have fun at the BBQ. Your workout today sounded awesome. I haven't even started and here you are off to do chores!

Alisha - did you decide whether you are buying a new dryer?

Jenn - how are you feeling today, did you get enough rest to put in a run?
When does Shelby start school?

I haven't exercised yet today, I am going to lift, but I haven't decided what yet...maybe all of 4ds just the weights portions. I have been doing muscle max, which is a full body, but I am bored now, and it doesn't seem to meet the mark. I swear I can already see atrophy since I finished Meso3...when was that...the end of July! Criminee time flies!

:D

I guess I'm the only one who fizzled out on the workout today! The rain just killed my motivation today!

I could never bring a new kitty into our household! My Simon can't deal with change very well. He gets UTIs!

Don't know what I'll do tomorrow, but I really must get a workout in! We're supposed to get a whole lot of rain tomorrow! I'm not looking forward to it, but at least it'll keep me in to where I can do either a weight dvd or step!

Hello everyone!

Janis, my package came yesterday! :) :D Thanks so much, your message was so sweet too! The picnic was fun despite the gloomy weather. There was lots of food, game, and prizes. Afterwards we came home and watched a movie and then called it a night! I'm glad your ankle is feeling better. What workout did you decide on yesterday? Will you do another round of STS? I'd like to keep the kitty (my hubby didn't like the name Sassy so she is currently nameless), but my husband really doesn't want 4 cats, since we already have 3 and one dog. I can understand how he feels, the hair is already out of control even though I vacuum everyday. We'll at least foster her until she finds a home, but we'll see just how "temporary" her stay becomes! ;) :p

Tricia, my little orange kitty doesn't deal with change well either. I feel bad for him because he's really sensitive. He doesn't mind other cats or the dog, he just doesn't like the others to get my attention. What workout did you do today? Up until yesterday I hadn't done a step workout since the beginning of the year. I am so sore in all sorts of brand new places! :)

Hellos to Morningstar, Alisha, Jenn, and everyone! Hope you're all doing well! Any plans for the weekend?

Jenn, I realized I forgot to answer your questions about the movies we've seen recently. We rented "New in Town" with Renee Zelwegger & Harry Connick Jr. It was a cute movie. We just watched "Gran Torino" last night with Clint Eastwood (my hubby's choice!). While I didn't care for the foul language or racial slurs, it was actually a decent movie and quite sad!

No workouts for me. Enjoy the weekend everyone!
