New Runners Check-In; All Runners Welcome! August 10, 2009

Folks, today was a hard day for me. I really let life get to me and felt very bad. But, it didn't hit until I had finished my C25K workout, so that's something, anyway. It actually hit on the cool down. I didn't do the strength workout I had planned, but I did get the run in. We have to celebrate the small victories sometimes.

Man, I'm so bloody sick of my life.

So sad! My cousin's wife seems to have lost the baby. There was no heart beat yesterday. She is scheduled for a DNC on Monday. We were looking forward to a new little person. Shoot. :(<alligator tears:mad:

Anyway. I am still feeling really sick so I skipped last nights workout and I'm just walking this morning, I'm not up to running. My GI tract is a mess. ouchie. ouchie.

I hope that everybody has a way better day than mine has started out to be.

I'm so sorry about the loss of your cousin's baby! {{hugs}} I'll keep them in my prayers.

I'm so sorry you've had such a tough day! :( Look on the bright side - you made it through the tough part of your workout today, tomorrow is a new day and brings new possibilities!

Hang in there!

MStar I know how you feel!!! Hugs!!!! And in my book any day that you run is a victory.

Morningstar, I am sorry it's been rough. Life is like that, periods of good follow periods of not so good, it just comes and goes in cycles.

I had one year where instead of "trying to see the forest from the trees." (i.e. get distance and perspective) I could not look at the entire forest. I was only capable of focusing on one tree at a time, somehow one tree at a time I finally made it out of the bloody forest.

Here is my one piece of advice - slow and steady.

I wish there was something I could do to help.

So, guys, today is another day and another chance, right?

This morning I did a HIIT run. Here's the skinny:

  • 10 minute warm up walk
  • 6 30-second sprints with 30 seconds recovery between them
  • 2 minutes walking
  • 6 30-second sprints with 30 seconds recovery between them
  • 6 20-second sprints with 40 seconds recovery between them
  • 4 10-second sprints with 30 seconds recovery between them
  • 2 minutes walking
  • 6 30-second sprints with 30 seconds recovery between them
  • 6 20-second sprints with 40 seconds recovery between them
  • 4 10-second sprints with 30 seconds recovery between them
  • 10 minute cool down walk

It has been a couple of weeks since I did a HIIT run, and man, did my body feel it afterwards! Hip sore, knees sore, but I really pushed it and got the following stats: calories burned 836; max heart rate 115% of max; average heart rate 80% of max.

Alisha, how are you doing? Are your cousin and his wife okay? Are you feeling better physically yet?

Tricia, how was District 9?

Janis, how did the shoe fitting go? (and yes, the baby sloth is wrapped around human fingers!) By the way, I've been really interested in your blog entries about your sister (excellent swearitude!)

Jenn, I hope you get a chance to get some workouts in with your work schedule.

And speaking of which, the next couple of weeks are going to be very hairy for me at work - just really really busy and stressful. I am going to try very hard to keep to my workout rotation, but I won't be too down on myself if I can't. I may not be able to post as much, but that will allow someone else to get a word in edgewise, right? :p I love my job, and the problematic staff person remains on vacation this week, so that all helps!

Everyone, please have a beautiful Monday!

Good Morning Everyone!

Morningstar - Hey, if we couldn't whine and complain here, where else could we go to do it? We all need to vent and let off some stress and steam now and then, don't worry about it! At least here, people listen an can relate in some cases! It helps!

I love your HIIT routine! That looks awesome! I keep telling myself I'm going to do one and, for some reason, I keep putting it off. Afraid, maybe? I don't know.

Anyway, enjoy your peace and quiet at work! At least the pain is still out!

Me, I didn't feel like going in to work today. I had myself all geared up to call in, but, as usual, I' all dressed, having breakfast, ready to go! Damn that work ethic! (Thanks, Mom! - sarcastic tone here) I would have preferred staying in today!

District 9 was awesome! Don't expect Independence Day or any other big sci-fi style movie. It's different, but excellent. Kind of sad, too. I'm a sci-fi junkie!

Well, today it's the start of my semi-August rotation (Cathe's). It's MIS this afternoon which is a good thing as I believe it is supposed to rain today!

Take care everyone!

Forgot to mention: for today's workout I put on my "robo-legs", which I haven't taken out in some time. What are robo-legs? Well, it's kinda hard to describe. You know how in RoadRunner cartoons, you see the RoadRunner running so fast that the legs start looking like wheels? Well, robo-legs feels like that looks. It's like something automatic kicks in, and I start taking very fast small steps, with my upper body staying almost completely still. All the energy in my body goes into moving my legs and it feels really natural to move very fast like that. My heart rate goes way up (that's when I start seeing over 110% of max consistently for each sprint). And yet, I feel like I'm not working as hard as I do when I don't have my robo-legs on. I think it's the transfer of energy to my legs instead of my upper body. I wonder if I could do robo-legs for a C25K run? Maybe I'll play with it and see what happens.

I could use that! Do you have a website where you sell them for 3 Payments of $19.99? ;)

Hi Everyone!

We had a great weekend with our family BBQ, despite the rain! It was fun with lots of good food. On Sunday my husband and I went out to breakfast and then rented some movies and just vegged out the rest of the day, it was fantastic!

I missed a lot of posts and unfortunately can't read them all as slow as I'd like because our computer has some sort of virus that my hubby is working on fixing. :( I shouldn't spend too much time on-line because of it, plus it keeps kicking me out of what I'm doing!!

So, I hope everyone is doing well. I did see something about Alisha's cousin losing her baby and I wanted to say how sorry I am about that! I cannot even imagine the pain of that type of loss! :( Morningstar, I hope you are feeling better, I know you've been going through some rough times too. I'm glad you find encouragement here!

Tricia, Janis, Jen, and all - I hope you guys are doing well and rocking your runs/workouts!!

This week is Week 7 of C25K and I plan on decreasing my runs to 2x per week, instead of the recommend 3x per week. I am getting the itch to do different cardio now and I don't want to get burned out on running. Today I plan on walking the dog, then trying Jari Love Ripped 1000. My posts will most likely be more sporadic until the virus is fixed.

Have a great day everyone!!

Morningstar - LOL! Darn, I missed it!

Christine - Hate those computer viruses! Well, congrats on getting to Week 7!! I did the same thing when I hit week 8. I was just anxious to get to the final C5K run!

Forgot to mention, I went to a runner's store in Providence yesterday to see if they did gait evals. Their idea of an eval was to look at the wear and tear on my shoes and have me walk the length of the store and back in my stocking feet! Voila, instant eval! He said I do have some pronation and recommended moderate stability shoes. My questioni is, is that all there is to it? Should it be more involved? I'm just not sure if I should go with that or try someplace up in Boston first.

Need all your input and opinions!

Hi Everyone!

The whole shoe thing is a conundrum, isn't it? Who do you trust?! Furthermore, who is shucking and jiving, and who is just up-selling, and who is the expert? And is the expert also shucking/jiving/upselling?

I had plans to go to a running store to be fitted, they use a treadmill and a video camera. As it turned out, we ran out of time and had to settle for Sports Authority. Ok - I had done enough self-diagnosis and reading about running shoes to pretty much figure out what I needed - so I felt I could get a shoe, at the very least, to get me over the next hump until I can get in to see a sports doc.

ANYWAY. I am trying on my shoe when a store dude comes over and offers assistance. I am pretty good at getting an instant read on people, so I listen up when my radar is pinging "weirdo". I try to brush him off, but he fluffs up his feathers and tells me he is a shoe fitting professional. (a what:rolleyes:? you dweeb, you look like you just walked off of the set of Day of the Dead.) Well, I didn't say that out loud of course! But I did ask him what made him a professional, he told me he works at the xyz store (the store I had intended to go to) and he does shoe fitting clinics. (yeah, right:rolleyes: you lack the 'air' of a credible professional.)

Despite all my resistance, he did pick out a shoe that seems to fit me quite well, and gave me a spiel on orthotics and insoles. (dh was amused by his obvious 'practice sales skills' spiels, and his repeated going back to the beginning and starting over, I however, was itching to hurry him along.)

What is thoroughly confusing and possibly not cool, is he insisted I pronate (he barely looked at my sock footed stroll across the floor - yeah - me too Tricia.) I am not the picture of a pronater. I think I am the rare supinator. Plus I have high arches. We will leave that to the medical professionals to sort out.

Sales dude chose the Saucony Progrid Hurricane 10, he wanted to put me in the Brooks Adrenaline, however they didn't have my size, the other option he gave me was the Asics Kayano, but he insisted the saucony and the asics were the same shoe and I was getting a great deal on the saucony. The insole and the orthotic definitely give me more arch support, but now everything feels a lot more snug, which could be a good thing, maybe I had to much 'play' in my old shoes.

I just tried to give the whole ensemble a whirl on the treadmill. I was able to go 2.3 miles before my knee said enough for today. The inside of my right ankle still feels weirdly bruised - so it might take me another week to get back to running. I really miss it.

Now - if I had a two pair of robo legs, I'd be soooo happy! Where's the bogo offer???

Morningstar feel free to be as negative/grumpy/moody as you feel like and vent as often as you like...or not.

Tricia - the pictures from the Waterfire are so beautiful, what a fun summer in the city event! It sort of reminds me of Venice.

Alisha - :(:(:(:( so sorry to hear about the baby. On another note, I have been wondering if you are suffering from food poisoning. You did go out to eat the day before you got sick, right?

Christine - the family BBQ sounded like a wonderful event, and so did chilling out all day on Sunday. Computer viruses, spyware, trojan horses etc... are such a time consuming pain in the patooty. We are constantly running AVG and have a couple of fire walls. Some operating systems are more 'accepting' of viruses than others...we currently are using Mozilla Firefox which is more resistant than Internet Explorer.

Jenn - Hey there Hi there Ho there.

I am going to go lift weights, at least I can do that!

This inactivity is bumming me out, I am even afraid to do step/drill/kick box dvds.

At least I got some sleep last night

Good morning! Its sunny and beautiful here. I did about 3 miles (maybe a little more) I saw the miniature ram this morning and get this, he decided to run with me! He wasn't chasing me he was just exuberant dancing around his paddock. I did a lot of walking and some jogging.

Last night I used the hot pad on my tummy and took some mira lax and peppermint with enzymes. I also took some valerian because I hadn't slept since Friday night. I'm so tired. I'm glad I don't have to go to work today. I also did an advanced yoga workout yesterday. I love that stuff, go figure, its like taking a hot shower without getting wet.

MStar- I like the robo legs. The only problem with my pair is that I tend to look down when I have them on and I'm trying to improve my posture.

Tricia- We probably won't get any real rain out here for months, I wish we would, my roses are wilting.

Christine- I hate computer viruses!

Janis- I don't know it could have been food poisoning because I did eat out last week but it has just been so darn weird. Don't worry about doing any cardio until your ankle is better.

Regards gait evals: I think there is a place in town that uses a gel that you step onto and then with the computer they evaluate your gait based on that squishy stuff, the void that you leave behind, kind of like a memory foam mattress for feet. I just tend to buy the pair that feels good. Maybe I should put more thought into this.

Btw, thanks for all of the sympathy about the baby. Its really appreciated.

Well today it is a beautiful Monday and I have the day off. ;)

Had take Shelby to the Ortho for her top expander and now everynight I have to crank this piece of metal in her mouth. Oh and the whole thing scares the bejeebers out of me.

Also my nephew had to have surgery today. For some urology issues he was born with but had to wait until he was a year old. Happy First Birthday. But he made it through like champ but will be sore for of couple of days.

Tricia don't you just hate having a good work ethic.:p Hopefully your day will go by quickly.

Janis maybe the shoe guy gets a comission on orthotics and insoles for every pair he sells. :D I guess anyone can give them self a title, "shoe selling professional" did he have a business card to give you?

Christine glad your bbq was a blast. Did you rent any good movies? Hope DH gets the computer fixed soon.

Morningstar, how are you feeling today? Have you been able to get better sleep lately? I should be able to get better workouts in this week as I am back on my regular schedule.

Alisha how are your feeling? Better I hope.

Well Shelby and I are headed to the trail so she can rollerskate and I can get my run. BBL! Oh and I still have to go grocery shopping.

Jenn

Hi Jenn, boy oh boy, I remember the old top expander torture device and so does my ds19. He had one of those in third grade! OMG! After the first time, I gave the job to my husband. In retrospect we should have just waited a few years, as he ended up having two sessions with braces. How old is your dd?

I am so glad your nephew came through surgery with flying colors. Hopefully he will not remember any of his hospital first birthday event.

The store dude did not have business cards. LOL! I think he was honing his freshman sales skills. We'll see how the shoes workout. I have been wearing the ensemble all day, and have experienced significant relief in my ankle, so despite his presentation he just may know what he is talking about! I am hopeful that after months of running I will still say the same thing.

Janis, in my experience, almost all running shoe salespeople are a little odd and it always seems dubious that they know what they are talking about. But if you go to a specialty store that has quality shoes, they really do know their stuff. The person I go to all the time at the Running Room (awesome store) is the manager, and she is the most laid back person you've ever met. She exudes relaxation out of every pore and makes everyone around her feel calmer too. It's a very strange thing; I really like her- it's almost impossible not to!

Today was a weird workout. I did my own strength mix, and I had created it to meet some specific criteria: full body, minimal equipment, 4 exercises per muscle group and had to be quiet to do. I only used one barbell, set at 65lbs, 1 set of 20lb dumbbells, my flat bench, a mat and the Iron Gym. It incorporated 88 pushups, lots of pathetic attempts at pull ups and chin ups, planks, different kinds of squats and lunges, holds, pulses, etc. If the weight was lighter than I would normally use, I did lots of reps. If heavier, less reps. So some body parts were worked with endurance, some with hypertrophy and some with strength. It took 77 minutes, including warm up and cool down, and burned 655 calories.

Today is going to be another extremely challenging day at work, guys. I hope all of you are doing incredibly well and have great workouts!

Good morning all,

Janis DD is 11. She starts the 6th grade this year. She is very eager to get the actual braces but has to go through all this first. In ten days she goes back for the bottom expander. YIKES!!

My workout never happened yesterday, as my mom had me helping stuff enevelopes for a fund raiser, one of her friends has cancer and they are doing a golf tournament/dinner. Then the baby got home and of course we all fussed over him and then the grocery shopping needed to get done, blah, blah, blah. Sometimes life gets in the way.

Today I went out 6:30am and did week 3 day 1. Felt good, although I got stared down by a bunch of deer who wanted to cross the road. :D

Hope you all have a great day. I must now get ready for work.

Jenn

Morningstar - Sounds like a great strength routine! I'm a weakling next to you! Of course, I don't do that much strength training. I know I should, but I'm still working around the mental block about less cardio, more strength not making me gain weight! I did do MIS yesterday! I only burned a little over 300 cals though and I usually burn between 500-600 on cardio days! I'm going to fight the urge to not lift and keep going with this rotation and see what happens!

Today is a run day. I'm looking forward to it!

Jenn - Life quite often gets in my way! Things come up and you just have to go with the flow!

Hellos to everyone else - Christine, Alisha, Janie - Hope everyone has a great day and challenging workouts!
