Hi Everyone!
The whole shoe thing is a conundrum, isn't it? Who do you trust?! Furthermore, who is shucking and jiving, and who is just up-selling, and who is the expert? And is the expert also shucking/jiving/upselling?
I had plans to go to a running store to be fitted, they use a treadmill and a video camera. As it turned out, we ran out of time and had to settle for Sports Authority. Ok - I had done enough self-diagnosis and reading about running shoes to pretty much figure out what I needed - so I felt I could get a shoe, at the very least, to get me over the next hump until I can get in to see a sports doc.
ANYWAY. I am trying on my shoe when a store dude comes over and offers assistance. I am pretty good at getting an instant read on people, so I listen up when my radar is pinging "weirdo". I try to brush him off, but he fluffs up his feathers and tells me he is a shoe fitting professional. (a
what? you dweeb, you look like you just walked off of the set of Day of the Dead.) Well, I didn't say that out loud of course! But I did ask him what made him a professional, he told me he works at the xyz store (the store I had intended to go to) and he does shoe fitting clinics. (yeah, right
you lack the 'air' of a credible professional.)
Despite all my resistance, he did pick out a shoe that seems to fit me quite well, and gave me a spiel on orthotics and insoles. (dh was amused by his obvious 'practice sales skills' spiels, and his repeated going back to the beginning and starting over, I however, was itching to hurry him along.)
What is thoroughly confusing and possibly not cool, is he insisted I pronate (he barely looked at my sock footed stroll across the floor - yeah - me too Tricia.) I am not the picture of a pronater. I think I am the rare supinator. Plus I have high arches. We will leave that to the medical professionals to sort out.
Sales dude chose the Saucony Progrid Hurricane 10, he wanted to put me in the Brooks Adrenaline, however they didn't have my size, the other option he gave me was the Asics Kayano, but he insisted the saucony and the asics were the same shoe and I was getting a great deal on the saucony. The insole and the orthotic definitely give me more arch support, but now everything feels a lot more snug, which could be a good thing, maybe I had to much 'play' in my old shoes.
I just tried to give the whole ensemble a whirl on the treadmill. I was able to go 2.3 miles before my knee said enough for today. The inside of my right ankle still feels weirdly bruised - so it might take me another week to get back to running. I really miss it.
Now - if I had a two pair of robo legs, I'd be soooo happy! Where's the bogo offer???
Morningstar feel free to be as negative/grumpy/moody as you feel like and vent as often as you like...or not.
Tricia - the pictures from the Waterfire are so beautiful, what a fun summer in the city event! It sort of reminds me of Venice.
Alisha -
so sorry to hear about the baby. On another note, I have been wondering if you are suffering from food poisoning. You did go out to eat the day before you got sick, right?
Christine - the family BBQ sounded like a wonderful event, and so did chilling out all day on Sunday. Computer viruses, spyware, trojan horses etc... are such a time consuming pain in the patooty. We are constantly running AVG and have a couple of fire walls. Some operating systems are more 'accepting' of viruses than others...we currently are using Mozilla Firefox which is more resistant than Internet Explorer.
Jenn - Hey there Hi there Ho there.
I am going to go lift weights, at least I can do that!
This inactivity is bumming me out, I am even afraid to do step/drill/kick box dvds.
