New Runners Check-In; All Runners Welcome! August 10, 2009

Alisha - Glad you're feeling a bit better today!

Morningstar - Sounds like you guys got hit pretty hard! I hate bad storms!

Janis - I've been wondering if we should start a new thread! I don't know, do you think Guinness World Records would be interested in most posts to one forum thread? ;)

Well, it's not as hot today and the sun is out (for now), but it is deathly humid!!! Supposedly, we're going to get some storms and rain this weekend, but so far nada! I'm going to try to go get another good run in tonight, but don't know how well that's going to work out! Usually, if it's really humid, I have a terrible time trying to breathe even with my inhaler. Well, if I can't run, at least I can get a good long walk in or I could come home and do B&G. What do you ladies think?

Oh! And, my weight loss ticker is going nuts! I updated my weight this morning and this is what came out! Any ideas?

Well, Toronto stopped being Tornado Alley after about 2 hours, and then we had a lovely sunset. Weirdo weather for us, no kidding.

Today I did my own leg, bicep and ab circuit. If anyone would like the deets, I am happy to provide them, but I don't want to bore you guys.

Things are much less stressful at work (for a couple of days only), because someone I work with is on vacation. I had no idea how tense I was around her until she went away! Now, she says rubbing her hands together and laughing maniacally, how can I get rid of her more permanently?:D

Morningstar I have that same exact co worker. The office is so happy and laid back when she is not here. Sadly we all look forward to her day off and her vacations. She is just a miserable person, and she hates it when the rest of work together and help each other out with stuff.

Glad the tornados passed you by, but WOW you guys got some serious weather yesterday.

Jenn

Alisha glad your feeling better.

Tricia we are having that same awful humidity. It is disgusting.

Hi Janis, Christine and anyone I missed.

Ok back to work.

Jenn

Hi everyone!

Okay, I just typed a big long post here and then lost it!! I will try this again....

I've had a long, busy day but wanted to post because I most likely won't be posting again until Monday. We're having a family BBQ here tomorrow and I spent all day shopping, cleaning, preparing, etc. We also had some bad storms, tornado warnings, and a slow internet connection! Here I am sitting down for 5 minutes to rest and check-in!

Today I did my 3rd run from Week 6 of C25K. We ran for 25 minutes!! I have to say, I was sooooo tired by 20 minutes and felt like I was running in slow motion for the last 5 minutes, which actually felt like an eternity! :p But I was proud to get it done! I made it to 20 so I refused to give up! I let my dog jump in the lake after we were done, she loved it! Then we both drank water like crazy and headed home. :)

Janis, thanks so much for your feedback on my nutrition! I will take your advice and add more protein where I need it! I know I shouldn't eat bananas so often, I sort of just fell into the habit of eating them everyday because I love them so much!

My mom said "vittles" today!! How funny, right??

I do know the show Beverly Hill Billies, LOL. I see the re-runs on TV Land. I really like watching Green Acres, the wife makes me laugh, especially when she's all gussied up to milk a cow, HA!

I'm glad your knee is feeling better! Did you end up doing a workout DVD after your run?

Morningstar, thanks for your input too on my menu! I'm glad you were safe during that tornado warning, we had one here today too. The rain was nasty, but it passed rather quickley. I don't think it's over yet, but at least the tornado warnings are over.

Alisha, I'm glad you're feeling better! I get chased by the same two dogs everytime I run at the park. I don't get how the owners can just let them run off the property and into the road!!?? The first time it happened I was really scared, but then realized they weren't mean. It's still annoying though because it distracts MY dog and interrupts my run. Now we just keep running, I don't even stop to acknowledge them and they just turn around and go home. Thank God my dog is obedient!

Tricia, I'm sorry I can't help you because I am "ticker challenged", LOL! I hope you get it fixed though! The humidity was just awful here this morning so I can relate! I cannot even imagine trying to breath in it with asthma! Maybe you could go for a long walk AND do Butts & Guts? ;)

Jenn, how are you doing today? Did you get the storms today that we got?? It was scary for a bit, I'm glad the worst of it passed!

Hellos to everyone and anyone I may have missed. Have a great weekend!

Congratulations on your 25 minute run today, Christine! If feels good to get there doesn't it? Wow, everyone seems to have had some really severe weather lately! So far, we've been okay. DH wants to go surfing tomorrow! The waves should be great!

I also want to see District 9. I've heard great things about that movie! Can't wait! Hoping to get some tennis in too this weekend and a couple of runs! I had a decent 2.5 mile run today. I didn't do my full 5k only because I was trying to increase my pace some. I average 8'57" per mile tonight! That's my fastest so far!

Hope everyone is well today and has a great weekend!

Christine I was at work when the storms came through. All of sudden it became so dark and then lots of rain. I also heard there was a tornado warning for the Montgomery area. Luckily the storms had passed when I left work so the drive home was fine.

Congrats on your 25 minute run.

Jenn

Hey guys,

Today's run was C25K, Week 4 and I did it twice! That last 5 minute run was HARD! Today's stats: 995 calories, max heart rate 105% of max, average 83% of max, 63 minutes including warm up and cool down, 1 new blister, a very red face, sweat that could be collected in buckets and a slight headache. Wildlife sighted: 1 snail. Funniest thing: I really had to pee throughout the run, and about halfway through, I pass a toilet sitting on the sidewalk, clearly awaiting my arrival. (and yes, I resisted the temptation!)

So, I'm glancing ahead to week 5, and the last workout of that week jumps to 20 minutes! What the ...? How the heck do we get from 8 minutes to 20 minutes? I don't even know how I'm going to do 8 minutes! Those of you that have done it, how'd you manage? Did the 8 minute intervals prepare you adequately for the 20 minute killer or did you have to work up to it in some way?

I am going to spend most of today doing spring-cleaning type chores. I would love to say that I am just a little late from this past spring's clean-up, but it's more like being late from the spring clean up of three years ago! I'll put on some great music, grab a glass of something alcoholic and that should get me through!

What are you guys up to today?

PS. another child has died from the tornados on Thursday; he was 5 years old.

Good Morning, Morningstar!

I was going to tackle your post one at a time, but I must say when I got to the end, just how sad it is that such young lives are lost! :(

On to business:

First, don't sweat the 20 minute run (ha, ha!). By the time you get to it, you'll be ready! Trust me! I know what you mean about looking ahead. In retrospect, I wish I hadn't because all I did was dwell on what was coming instead of the task at hand! Not a good mental boost! Believe me though, it does work! Good for you getting through your 5 minute runs! The last one on the first day was hard for me too!

I love your story about the toilet!! :p:p I've had days like that where I'd get just into my run and think, "Darn, I should have gone one last time before I left!" Only, no toilets waiting for me along the way!

Second, I'm so glad I'm not the only one behind on spring cleaning! I still haven't gotten up to it! I hate housework with a passion! I keep saying that some day I'll have a maid. Right now, I'd settle for a Roomba!

We should all get together and clean each other's house once a year. That way, each of us gets one great cleaning a year!

I wanted to run today, but I'm not really feeling it right now. We're heading to Narragansett so Stephen can surf today. I'll see how I feel when we get home. Probably will end up taking the day off! We have a waterfire to go to tonight, too. Stephen's company is sponsoring it, so we'll go, have some free food, and come home, assuming the weather holds up! So, that will probably fill our day!

Enjoy your housework! (Yeah, right, huh?)

Good Morning Running Friends!

I managed to run today. 3.65 miles (5.87kilometers) 32:32 minutes. I ran to CCv1. I am looking forward to getting back to longer runs, but I am happy I was able to do this.

Morningstar - now if the toilet had been pink, well, I think you would have had to use it, no question! Tell me - what the heck is your new avatar? And congrats on a great run! (I struggle to get my heart rate up and keep it up, I do best between 75-80% of max, there is no way I could sustain 85% for as long as you do.) Wildlife: A snail! :D:D:D Good luck on your triennial clean. Where I live spiders take over in a matter of days! We're gone for a week and my front door looks like, no joke, a haunted house!

Christine - I have lost long posts too! Makes you want to cry! GREAT JOB on your 25 minute run. How funny your mom said 'vittles', the universe is like that isn't it!?

Tricia - what is a waterfire? And clarify your pace/speed for me - I am not sure what this means "I average 8'57" per mile tonight". I am so GLAD I don't live in a humid place, plus you have asthma - oh my! (California is the place you oughta be, they loaded up the truck and moved to Beverly) LOL!

Alisha - sorry you have been sick. I hate it when I am waylaid. I agree, untrained, untethered dogs are upsetting. The poor pups need a pack leader.

Jenn - how is your running coming along?

Now - I have a question for all of you. When you do Cathe dvds, like her drills or step, do you use different shoes than your running shoes? If so, what shoes have worked best for you for step, kick box, drills? I think I need new running shoes/inserts and I think I need different shoes for dvds. I am pretty certain the drills/kickbox impact is what initiated some of ankle/knee issues. I use NikeFree for lifting weights because I can feel the floor i.e. grip the floor and therefore keep good balance and form while lifting, but the NikeFree clearly don't work for drills, and my running shoes are too bulky for drills/kickbox/step. I need your group input here. (please :)

Today is catch up on laundry and get my ds11 sorted out for school, which starts on Tuesday.

What the heck, why bother with a new thread lol!

MStar- You will be ok. I did have to work up to doing 20 minutes straight but then doing 25 seemed fine. Go figure. I could do 16 minutes. And then had to work up to 20.
Syzy- You are way fast! Geez 8 min. miles? I'm impressed!
Thanks everybody for all the "I hope you feel betters"
Christine- I had the same kind of situation, in the beginning I was scared of those dogs but now I just say, "Aw come on, you know I have to go without you!"
Janis- I have different shoes for step than I do for running. Ok. I will be honest. I have one pair for step (cross trainers, cheap at Payless shoe source) one pair of Asics for trails and one pair for road running. I replace them once a year. I figure that since I only jog 3x a week thats ok.

This morning I did the Yoga for Dummies with Sara Ivanhoe. This evening may be LIC. Depends on how I feel. I do feel better than I had.

Hey Janis,

My new avatar is a baby sloth- I love sloths! I'm afraid I don't have any suggestions for shoes, as this is an area I struggle in mightily. I have lots of foot issues.

are there human fingers in there???

Re: shoes - the whole foot thing connected to the ankle thing connected to the knee thing is interfering with my happiness!!! LOL:p

ETA: I am going to a running shoe store tomorrow to be fitted. I found a store that has you run on a TM while they video you etc... I'll also talk to them about cross-training shoes. I'm happy happy!

Hi everyone,

Janis this upcoming week I am redoing week 3 and week 2 of Cathe's August rotation. With my work schedule last week I didn't workout that much.

Morningstar I have a pair of Avia cross trainers for my indoor activities (step, hi/lo, kb and weights). I wear a pair of New Balance cross trainers for my jog/walks and standing all day at work. I should probabley get a pair just for jog/walks.

Tricia what is a waterfire? Hope you guys had fun. Did you get your run today?

Hi Christine and Alisha.

Jenn

Evening All!

Didn't get a run in today, but Stephen got some amazing surfing in!

We went to Waterfire in downtown Providence tonight. They have these once a month every summer. It's very much like a carnival. They have performers everywhere, food, drink, gondola rides and the most important part, they light these fire pits down the center of the canal that runs between the streets all the way up to the mall. I"m attaching a link to the photo gallery. Hope I did this right and you can see the pics!

Good morning sleepyheads,

Tricia the Waterfire looks like so much fun.

I am hoping to get a run in today. But the weather is blah with scattered T-storms. So it may be indoor cardio and gymstyles.

Have to clean the house and do some grocery shopping. Fun, Fun.:)

What's everyone else up to today?

Jenn

Let's see . . . my plan for today is to go by the Rhode Runner specialty store and see if they do gait evals, then it's off to see District 9 and take my laptop back to the Apple store for some doctoring. I'm still having trouble with my battery charging properly.

Our weather isn't looking too conducive for a run today either. That's okay. I'm going to finally try the August rotation starting on Monday. I don't have all the dvds, so I'm just going to substitute what I have and see what happens! I'll keep my running as my cardio and just do the weight segments. I don't have STS, so I'm not quite sure what I'm going to sub for those days yet.

It's off to the shower so we can get going! Yes, we slept in and we're just getting started after a yummy breakfast of chocolate chip pancakes! Giradhelli bittersweet chips (60% cacao), so I don't feel too badly - dark chocolate is good for you, right? ;)

Have a great day everyone!

So sad! My cousin's wife seems to have lost the baby. There was no heart beat yesterday. She is scheduled for a DNC on Monday. We were looking forward to a new little person. Shoot. :(<alligator tears:mad:

Anyway. I am still feeling really sick so I skipped last nights workout and I'm just walking this morning, I'm not up to running. My GI tract is a mess. ouchie. ouchie.

I hope that everybody has a way better day than mine has started out to be.
