New Runners Check-In; All Runners Welcome! August 10, 2009

Christine - I love movies! New in Town is on my Netflix list! We saw District 9 last weekend - excellent! A Haunting in Connecticut was really good if you like scary movies. We have The Last House on the Left for this weekend and should be getting another disc of Weeds today. We watched Imposter again last night from our personal collection. We hadn't watched it in a while.

I don't workout in the mornings, so I still have a chance to get one in later! We'll see. Luckily, we're not getting quite as much rain as they thought we would, at least not yet! I hope it stays that way!

Happy Saturday to everyone! I hope you are all having better weather than we are today!

Be well!

As I write this, I still have sweat running down my whole body- it's gross, yet satisfying! Today was all about strength, and I did another of my own mixes (why I'm not into Cathe workouts right now, I don't know. I know I will get back to them at some point). This one was full body, one body part completed before moving on to the next (not circuit) and I did 4 exercises for each body part (except for legs, when I did 8 exercises), one set each. Now, one set might be 48 squats or 32 push ups, while another set might be 12 wide angle front presses. The whole thing, including warm up and cool down, took 74 minutes and burned 875 calories.

Okay, I'm gonna go collapse for a bit and watch some trashy television (I get the feeling that when I'm eighty I'm really going to regret the time I've spent watching Friends, Real Housewives of..., etc. Hopefully by then I'll be senile and won't care that I've wasted my life on such garbage! I suppose I could just head it off at the pass and not watch them, but then I'd miss them and we can't have that!). Later I'll do some chores and errands, that kind of thing.

Everyone, have a lovely day!

Hi Ladies!

Wow - Christine! It already arrived! Go USPS! Yay! The picnic sounded fun! Those company things can go either way sometimes fun...sometimes sheer torture! lol. I ended up doing 4dsplit, the weights only premix - 97 minutes. I plan on starting another 3.5 month round of STS on Monday.

I love movies too. The older I get the harder it is to find movies with interesting plots, scripts, direction....seems like they all end up being variations on the same theme. I loved Gran Torino. The racials slurs didn't bother me, as that was the whole point! I love Clint Eastwood movies, the westerns especially, but Dirty Harry too. Not the weird Monkey ones with the psycho girl friend he had. (in real life and on the big screen.) While I can't stand actors who just play themselves (i.e. Kevin Costner, Nicolas Cage) I am not bothered by ol' Clint playing himself over and over. LOL:D I liked the Renee Zelwegger Harry Connick movie too....charming. We just watched Duplicity with Julia Roberts and Clive Owens. Liked it too. I end up seeing a lot of action adventure movies living with 4 guys...but I don't mind... Now the horror movies, OMG! Tricia!!! I can't even watch the commercials or trailers for them. I am too sensitive.

I am glad nameless kitty is better. My husband isn't crazy about animals, particularly in the house and we only have two cats!

Tricia - The weather here is fantastic. Are you sure you don't want to move to California! lol!:D:D Now, tell me, why not exercise in the morning?

Morningstar! Way to rock your workout!!! 32 push ups consecutively???? I can only do 15 before I take a break and hit it again. One set of 48 squats! You deserve to watch all the trashy t.v. you want! Hey, look at it this way, when you're old and senile it may be the ONLY dialogue you remember, well that and advertising jingles!!! You could have some very interesting conversations with yourself.

...how about chocolate torte? It is made with just almonds, eggs, chocolate and a wee bit of flour....or how about this, I make a great cheesecake, we like it with a raspberry sauce. yummmmm.

As for me - I am going to do Power Yoga with my buddy Rodney Yee. I am also working out what to do next week when I start STS. Part of me wants to double up the legs for Meso 1,but I also don't want to burn out or injure myself. At the moment I am leaning towards simplicity MWF of STS and TTHSun Running, Saturday Yoga. What do you guys think?

Later its laundry, vacuuming, mopping, menus, shopping list and making cookies (by ds11 request). I may only get the cookies made and ditch the chores for tomorrow.:p

Hi Jenn and Alisha. What are you two up to?

Have a good one fitness friends.:)

Hi Janis!

Your plan for STS sounds great to me! Of course, with my paranoia, I'd have to slip in a little more cardio!

I grew up on Clint Eastwood and John Wayne westerns! My Dad had them on every Saturday morning! I thought Gran Torino was awesome, too! My Mom and I used to watch all the old black & white horror movies together when I was little! I guess that's why I still love them, so!

My only reason for not working out in the morning is that I just can't make myself get up that early! I am so not an early riser! I wish I were because there are so many days I'd rather have my evenings for other things! That's why some weeks I'll take a day off during the week to catch up on the errands I put off.

No plans to move to CA in the near future, but we are trying to plan a trip before the end of the year to do wine country for a few days. Hopefully, it'll all work out!

It's supposed to be beautiful here tomorrow! Can't wait for all this rain to move out! I'll get in a Cardio Coach run tomorrow! I'm so excited! I just bought five more volumes with the sale he had going! I was holding out for this type of sale and it finally came! Ended up $5.99 per volume! Can't beat that! Only 2 more to go and I'll have all the coached ones!

I adore cheesecake, too - any kind! I keep experimenting with different ones! Mostly the ones involving chocolate! I typically only bake one or two a year, because my DH and I are the only ones in the household and we do eat the whole thing!:eek::eek: So, I keep that baking to a minimum - holidays and such!

Anyway, I'm just blathering away here while I wait on DH to get back with lunch!

Enjoy the rest of the day!

Oh, who am I kidding! I'll probably add something later tonight! I'm an addict - "Hello, my name is Tricia and I'm addicted to the Cathe Forums!"

Hi ladies,

I can't believe how cold and miserable it is here. I have not worked out in 3 days, have not wanted to get out of bed and after a full day of work I don't want to do it when I get home.

Janis, Shelby starts school September 8th. She is going in the 6th grade. It's her second year of middle school. Then once school starts it is Girl Scout, dance and piano time.

Morningstar, what do you prefer more weights or cardio? I'm going to guess weights with all the rotations you make up for yourself.

Tricia, Is your hubby going to try surfing the weekend? Do you surf? It looks so fun but I would most likely break something! :p

Christine, Sorry the BBQ got rained on. Did his company have it anyway? I feel like we haven't had any summer at all. What is your new kitty's name?

Alisha hope your doing well and feeling better.

Well right now I'm at work waiting for the mail carriers to return so I can lock up their stuff and go home. After today I am on vacation for 10 days. :D I have no plans but to workout, nap and not have to come work. I'm hoping to go to the fair tomorrow and get my gourmet candy apple, so yummy!!:p

Hope everyone has a great weekend. Will check back later.

Jenn

Hi Janis!

Your plan for STS sounds great to me! Of course, with my paranoia, I'd have to slip in a little more cardio!

I need the cardio! I swear it is what gets me fueled up for the day. Since dialing it back while resting my ankle, I feel like a wilted flower. I actually would like to run more often than Tue Thur Sunday, and I may still! Gosh darn injury! and especially gosh darn 'cuz I really don't think I did it running - although who am I kidding - even though I think it was from doing cross training/plyo/boot camp stuff - over use is over use!

horror movies together when I was little! I guess that's why I still love them, so!

Yikes! and double yikes! They have always freaked me out - probably because I am so aware of the 'more than what it looks like' plane of existence. Those sort of movies disturb me for days. Bad dreams.Creepy crawly skin. The heebie jeebies. For cryin' out loud, Wal-mart gives me the heebie jeebies and not because of the corporation but the clientele!

No plans to move to CA in the near future, but we are trying to plan a trip before the end of the year to do wine country for a few days.

Do let me know! I can give you restaurant recommendations!

Hip hip hooray! I love love love Sean. I didn't do press play today, for obvious reasons, but I am so anxious to get back to it! (duh, not like I haven't said that a thousand times already this week! LOL)

I adore cheesecake, too - any kind! I keep experimenting with different ones! Mostly the ones involving chocolate! I typically only bake one or two a year, because my DH and I are the only ones in the household and we do eat the whole thing! So, I keep that baking to a minimum - holidays and such!

Have you tried freezing it in single serving portions! Just separate with parchment and wrap in plastic, then put in heavy duty freezer ziplocks. !!! So yummy when you just need a little bit!

Talk about blathering, I did my Rodney and now I need to go shower! Wow - the day is half over!

P.s. I love love love John Wayne. I was told by an Italian that all American's sound like John Wayne to him. So every once in awhile I talk real slow and thick likejust to make myself laugh. "Well, see here little fella ...." lol:D

Jenn

Jenn, you work for U.S.P.S???

Man oh man, I hear ya on the "once school starts...." thing. Right now it is soccer, soccer, piano, soccer. Not as bad though as when the older two were playing recreation league.

Sounds like a great 10 day vacation plan! Enjoy the fair. I love fairs, but they seem to have changed a lot. At least the ones here in California. I like seeing the live stock and the bunnies, chickens and lambs.

Have a great weekend, and maybe you can get a run in despite the weather!
:D

Hey wonderful running-type people!

Today was the dreaded 20 minute interval of week 5 and I did fine. I finished the interval, walked 10 minutes, did a 10 minute interval and then two 5 minute intervals with 3 minute breaks between each interval. Burned 1079 calories and my heart rate stayed right where I wanted it. Now I'm feelin' some minor DOMS all over my body- a combo of yesterday's strength workout and today's run. Even my abs are feeling it - actually, that's kind of a neat sensation.

Janis, remember that you want to run for life, not just for right now. Injuries that set you back temporarily will set you back permanently if you don't respect the healing process. I say HELL YES on the torte, mostly because I actually can make a white chocolate cheesecake that rocks- along with brownies and peanut butter cookies to die for, that is the extent of my baking skills. Since you aren't visiting in non-virtual reality at this point, can you send one by USPS???? With regard to Rodney Yee, I've heard mixed reviews about him- some say he's too hard and a bit boring. What do you think? I like Kest and Adrienne Reed for power yoga and Namaste yoga when I'm feeling very mellow and low energy.

Jenn, at the moment I actually prefer cardio, but I have a feeling I will be more strength-oriented when the cold weather hits. I create my own cardio workouts as well, especially HIIT running workouts.

Christine, I hear ya on your cats not liking change- I don't think any cat likes change and man do they let you know it!

Alisha, how's the tummy?

Tricia, I can handle scary movies when I'm in the right mood, but not gory ones. I loved Blair Witch Project, the Grudge, etc., but not into Hallowe'en, for instance. One of the scariest gross movies I have seen was Wrong Turn. OMG- yuck! And a classic, Candyman, still gives me the shivers just thinking about it.

Hey gotta go; tomorrow is a freakin' crazy day at work and I will not have internet access all day, so you may not hear from me much. Cheers, y'all!

Hey, do you guys realize that this thread has more views than any other check-in thread- more than twice as many views as the next one in line? Is it just us that is checking us out so often, or are there a lot of hardcore lurkers out there just as obsessed with this check-in group as we are?

You know what - this really helped me a lot Morningstar. I needed to hear this. Thanks for tellin' it to me straight. I had it in the forefront of my mind when I went out to attempt my first run since Wednesday. I stopped at 23 minute and 2.45 miles. :)

Absolutely! :D:D:D

I haven't tried Adrienne Reed, I'll have to check her out. I have Shiva Rhea's Yoga Shakti and Bryan Krest. I like Shiva well enough. Bryan, however, well I just haven't clicked with him. I know a lot of people on the forum love him, but I find him a bit abrasive. It could be an east coast/west coast thing. I always feel like Bryan is yelling at me, and he seems too touchy-feely hands on with his yoga girls, I also react to what I perceive to be a gigantic ego. Where as Rodney Yee is mellow, calm, sattvic and um, transparent. I completely understand why others complain about him being boring and repetitive, both valid complaints, but I appreciate the balance he brings to his programs - forward and backward, left and right, warming up cooling down...and his steady even voice. My life is passionate enough, I don't need Bryan Krest's urgency!:D

I hear ya on your cats not liking change- I don't think any cat likes change and man do they let you know it!

What are your pets names?

I am dangerous with this multi-quoting function! Have a great Sunday and work-a-day Monday.

I am doing the cleaning I didn't do yesterday, and I'm setting up my workout cards/notebook and my weights etc.. for STS.

OH - hey, what whey powder do you use, and do you add your BCAA to it, or do you get it included with the whey?

:D:D

Laugh out loud funny!

Even if the six of us checked in 10 times a day (I'm not, honest! lol) for the last twenty days, we would only have 1200 views.... But there are what, 4,655 views!

Holy guacamole bat man!

Replying to Janis:

You're welcome!

I haven't tried Adrienne Reed, I'll have to check her out.

She has a great Texas accent that is funny as hell coming from a yoga instructor. She almost does like a cardio yoga and her background performers sweat like crazy. She forgets the count and laughs at herself and it is all a little unprofessional and fun.

Absolutely true on all accounts. He is very much in love with the sound of his own voice. To me, sometimes he seems like he's desperately trying to convince you of the same thing over and over. BUT, I really find his background performers motivating- they are so wonderfully flexible with such amazing form. And I do like his philosophy of being where you're at, rather than pushing too far beyond your limits- accepting yourself for what you can do and being happy with it. I tend to be very competitive with myself, and that can be dangerous with yoga.

I can see that being good if I was in the mood for that. I generally prefer intensity to calmness in my workouts, though, which maybe a general reflection of the drama and disaster my life so often is. I really do need more peace and calmness in my life; never having had it, I'm not sure I'd recognize it if it bit me in the... sitbones.

OH - hey, what whey powder do you use, and do you add your BCAA to it, or do you get it included with the whey?

I use whey protein isolates only, and don't add BCAA to it- I supplement separately, with single entity amino acids, rather than as a mix. The amino acids in BCAAs tend not to be the ones I need. The exact one I use at the moment is Allmax'x Isoflex Chocolate with Chocolate chips. And don't forget the rum- that is a key ingredient in any protein shake!

Holy guacamole bat man!

Thanks for doing the math, Janis! Alright, youse guys! Come out come out wherever you are! Lurking is like, SO last year. We want to hear from you!

And don't forget the rum- that is a key ingredient in any protein shake!

Bwha haahhaaaa!

Rum is it now!?
What happened to the vodka?

(fyi - count is up 69 views, and it wasn't me!:D)

OMG! I'm LMAO here! Vodka, Tequilla, Rum, Scotch, Whiskey, etc.! I'll take a little of each please! :p No, I don't drink that much! But it would take that much to get me to drink any protein shake!

What kind of yoga dvds would you recommend for someone like me who has zero flexibility and is a beginner? That is why I haven't stuck with any yoga.

We are hot, hot , HOT! Everyone luvs our crazy selves and our check-in! If these are other new/experienced runners, they should just hop right in and join up! Drag them out of the woodwork (cyber-work?) and get them involved!

I'm a little all over the place here today. A little hyper!

Morningstar - Congrats on making the 20 minutes today! Good for you! You are only 2 weeks away from being done and on your way to our Coast-to-Coast Marathon prep! Right?

I have just finished baking Peppermint Patti Brownies! yum! My little splurge for the weekend! Back on the running track tomorrow. It's going to be a beautiful week!

Morningstar - Have a good Monday! I'm looking forward to the upcoming 3 day Labor Day weekend!

Morningstar - Congrats on making the 20 minutes today! Good for you! You are only 2 weeks away from being done and on your way to our Coast-to-Coast Marathon prep! Right?

Thanks, Tricia! But isn't it 4 weeks? I'm just starting week 6 tomorrow and it's a 9-week program. Also, on Labour Day I leave for a 1-week hiking trip in northern Ontario, so that will set me back a week. But I'll be carrying a heavy pack and hiking 8 hours a day, so it's not like I won't be working out!

Ps. yeah, we spell Labour with a "u". We spell a lot of things with a "u". Just the British in us rearing its ugly head, I guess.

Morningstar, congrats on the 20 min run!! Remember when it seemed impossible!?? And you added more after the 20 minutes!? You are a crazy running machine! :p

Tricia, MMMMMMM, I love pepermint patties!! Can you pass along the recipe? :)

Janis, I agree with you about the horror movies, they scare me too much to watch - nightmares and all!!

Jen, yeah they had the company picnic despite the rain! It was fun though, lots of good food and games! After much debate we decided to name the kitty Marbles. She looks like a marble loaf! (She's tortoiseshell)

Alisha, how is your weekend going?

Hellos to everyone! Hope you all had a great weekend! :D

Morningstar - the "u" in Labour didn't phase me a bit! I guess I'm already forgetting the timing of the C5K program! Enjoy your hiking trip! That'll probably be a tougher, more intense workout than the running! Can't wait to hear all about it when you get back - maybe see some pics?

Christine (and anyone else who may want it) - Here's the recipe for the brownies:

24 York Peppermint Patties (small)
1 1/2 cups butter or margarine (melted)
3 cups sugar
1 Tbsp. vanilla
5 eggs
2 cups all-purpose flour
1 cup cocoa
1 Tsp. baking powder
1 tsp. salt

Heat oven to 350 deg. Grease a 13x9x2 baking pan
Combine flour, cocoa, baking powder and salt - set aside
Stir butter, sugar and vanilla. Beat in eggs until well blended.
Gradually add flour mixture to butter mixture.
Reserve 2 cups of batter and spread remaining batter in bottom of pan. Arrange pepppermint patties on top of batter 1/2 apart, then spread remaining batter over patties.
Bake 50-55 mins. or until brownies pull away from sides of pan.

These are exquisitely to die for!

Enjoy!

Hi ladies,

I went to the fair yesteday and got my gourmet caramel apple. It is dark chocolate, cashews, almonds, caramel and apple. I can't wait to eat it.

The fair was fun but so crowded.

I also got a run in. I was going to try week 3 again, but I decided to just see how far I could run. I did about 30 minutes at a very slow pace. I am probabley the slowest runner ever.

I'm debating if I want to start another round of STS or not.

Todays plan is a workout just not sure which one yet.
Catch up on my soaps from last week. Maybe clean the house a little.
Take a nap. Ahh I love vacation!!!:D

So what is everyone up to today?
