New Runners All Welcome! Sept. 9, 09

My middle son told me last night I was too ripped. My husband took the diplomatic road, and said "you seem to be proud of your muscles", and left it at that! {What!!!}

The Ripped look takes a little while to get used to, but once you do, it's hard to think of women that don't have some muscles as being truly beautiful. I'm always looking for the muscles now.

Me too! I totally agree!

As a matter of fact, I'm thinking tank tops and racer back tops are a MUST have in my new wardrobe! LOL...

Maybe ds is just a little skeerd! for tiny wrists I can pack a punch!;)

Well, if you keep walloping them, it might be understandable for them to be a little biased toward weak women!

{laughing very loud} Man, I set myself up for that one!

{sputtering} there is nothing, absolutely nothing, I can say that won't sound - uh - weak! {bwahahaha}

that's like "when did you stop beating your wife?"

uh, how 'bout this -

it's self defense?

sometimes it's -er - playful?

uh - it's only mock punches?

gee -if someone jumps out of a hiding place, my reflexive repsonse is combat, not 'eek'.

I'm digging a deeper hole, huh!

Enjoy the break Christine! Look forward to hearing about all your exploits when you return!

Hey guys! Just wanted to let you know that I will be off the forums for a while. I've been spending too much time on-line and need a break! It was great meeting everyone! Happy running!! :)

Hi to All!

Janis & Morningstar - You are totally cracking me up tonight! Just got settled in! Don't let the "men" intimidate you into going "soft" Janis! Keep those muscles! I can't wait to get there myself! It's going to be a long road, though!

Got in a good run tonight. 3.3 miles. I'm holding at just over 3 miles, so when I get back off vacation, I guess I'm going to have to punch it up to 4 miles as my regular run.

We might do a 5 mile run in MA that comes up in November. Bypass the 5K and go straight to 5 miles!

Janis - Good for you finding a swim coach! I wish I could bring myself to find someone, but I need to find someone who can work with my fear of water.

3 more days and I'm outta here! Still so much to do before we go! My DH scheduled our balloon ride this morning. Lots of logistics involved! I have FB on my iPhone, so I'll be posting there and here when I can, which will probably only be at night when I have internet access!

A pretty quiet day for me today, but I expect that'll change as V-Day gets closer! The attorneys tend to start to panic 1-2 days before I go on vacation.

Morningstar - I hope you get some sleep tonight! You're starting to get a little punchy! :p;) Or loopy!

Jenn & Alisha - Hello! Hope you had a great weekend and a good Monday!

Hi ladies,

My weekend was very nice, and we are having another beautiful day. Unfortunetly I had to spend at work. :(:(

Yesterday I got 2.5 miles in, some walking but mostly running. Today I did Advanced step Challenge 3 premix.

Janis my first thought is combat also when someone scares the bleep out of me. :p

Christine sorry to hear your leaving us. You will be missed.

Jenn - Congrats on 2.5 miles yesterday! That's great! Today was beautiful here, too, and, yes, I was stuck in the office all day! :( I did get in a nice run this afternoon though afterwards. I'm also lucky enough to live close to the office so I can get out at lunch and come home. I let my pups out while I eat and usually have time to read a little or whatever.

Me too. I used to work with a guy who had a habit of sneaking up on people and touching them and boy was he surprised. I used to go to a really tough school in a bad neighborhood. People would steal your purse out of the front seat of your car while you were pumping gas so I got into the habit of locking my car door and carrying my keys while I pumped gas. He is just lucky I didn't bust a tooth or something, I'm short but scrappy because I have three older brothers.

Tricia- Thanks for the encouragement. Our totem was perceived by my mother during her pregnancies. As it turns out myself, my brother and my Dad all have the bear spirit looking out for us. And if you saw my brother you could see the distinct resemblance. He lumbers, he doesn’t really walk like a normal human being. I also have a very strong tie to avian spirits. There is a bird of prey that leaves his feathers for me on my running trail. It might seem like it just fell off but it was laid out in the center of the path. I have kept the feather in my garden. My grandmother was a quail and I see quail in our neighborhood. My granddad was a bird of prey, a hawk I believe. There have been a couple of times in my life where I should have died and heard the call of a hawk and I believe it was my grandfather who came for me. Btw you can borrow some of my creativity anytime.

Jenn- How are you?

MStar- I meant to let you know how proud I am of you for finishing the 5k all the way through. Awesome sauce! I loved the idea of dust rhinos and hippos. When I was a kid we had a series of made up stories about a hippo and we baked a Christmas ornament, I think she was purple. You do HP?

Janis- Yeah the whole video thing was not the most practical degree I could have earned lol. In retrospect I should have gone to nursing school but oh well! (no money for that kind of thing now.) Aqua jogging sounds like a mixture of exhaustion and refreshment. Hermione, that’s a great name for anybody. If I ever get a new car I will name it Hermione.

Christine- bye bye! You are welcome to come back anytime you want.

Janis is right, I could figure out where she lives. Hee hee just kidding I’m not psycho of course she does have workout gear that I don’t have. . . hmm.

I’m ok. I’m just not feeling real energetic and didn’t want to post when I hadn’t done anything but go to the farmers market and come home in the afternoon and fall asleep watching an old Eddie Albert movie called “Two Bears” it was super cute about these two little boys who visit a gypsy (I know its not politically correct but that’s what they said in the movie.) and learned how to wish themselves into being real bears. It was funny but I fell asleep at 3 pm anyway. Sheesh. So much for being a doer. :p

I am a huge HP fan. I belong to a local HP club for adults and we meet once a month. Several of our members went to Azkatraz the convention held at Alkatraz.

I will attempt a Cathe workout tomorrow evening. In the afternoon I have a doctor appointment to get my results. This should be interesting no matter what they have to say. I do have something for IBS called "triphala" which is an ayrvedic medicine used to treat IBS but I didn't want to do anything until the western doctors had finished with their tests. My Dad is going with me. He is good with medical terms and not letting doctors be a-holes.

Hey guys,

This morning was a rather pathetic attempt at a 5k. I did 2.5k, and then did intervals for another 2.5k. I just sort of talked myself out of doing the whole thing in one go. I could feel myself doing it, starting to make deals with myself and compromise as I started to get tired ("I'll just go halfway there and then I'll take a 2 minute walking break." "I'll just go halfway there and do intervals back." etc.) I just didn't know how to break that chain of thoughts once it's in my head. I'm going to try again tomorrow, but taking another route, that doesn't have a clear halfway point and is not an out and back route- maybe that will make it harder to make deals with myself.

So this was my first run with the sober HRM and man, those calorie figures are depressing! I finally figured out what the issue is and what's up with all that. I set my activity level to moderate instead of high (to try to stop getting such ridiculously high calorie readings) and then did my resting heart rate. When my activity level was set to moderate, it decided that my VO2 max was correspondingly moderate and calculated accordingly. I have no idea what my actual fitness level is, now.

It's so nice to hear from everyone - poor Janis and I were like the warm up act yesterday, just trying to keep our lurking audience interested while they wait for the real show to come on!

Alisha, I am a huge HP fan but haven't done anything fanlike in the sense of being like a Trekkor or anything. I will admit to having spent significant time contemplating what the books would be like should Rowling decide to do prequels, or a series on the kids of Ron, Hermione, Harry and Ginny.... Really, she can't just stop them forever! Can't someone do a Misery on her ass and FORCE her to write more books?

Janis, I have no doubt that your family both fears and respects you, for your sharp tongue as well as your cut figure! But you cook real good, and I'm sure that makes up for all of the sudden back fists to the nose as they come around the corner unexpectedly!

Tricia, I always find it really hard to get ready for a vacation while working. How are you managing?

Jenn, is the Advanced Step Challenge 3 premix a Cathe workout?

Alisha - Never be afraid to post everyday stuff! Inquiring minds (okay, nosey busy-bodies) want to know! LOL! I hope you get some answers today, even if it's just bull and you decide to see a naturopath or homeopath! Good luck! I love your totems! Very interesting. I have a book on animal totems. I really should sit down and do my meditation!

Morningstar - It's soooo the same way with me! I do tend to start trying to talk myself out of my goal for the day! That's why some days I just set my sensor to basic mode, so I can decide when I want to stop! I can usually talk myself into at least doing the full 5K distance once I get halfway. I, too, am having trouble with the whole knowing exactly where the the halfway mark is. I need to find someplace new to run! Maybe I should just start at a different spot on the bike path. hmmmm . . .

As to getting ready for vacation? I haven't done a thing! Other than setting out 2 litter boxes for my kitty so he has plenty of good litter for while we're gone. I have a hard time asking others to clean my kitty's litter box! I'm like the proverbial duck on the pond. On the exterior, I'm cool, collected, thinking it'll all going to get done, no sweat, but deep down, I'm FREAKING OUT!!! I have so much to do!

First things first though - I must get in all my runs before we leave! Yes, that's my biggest concern. Shame on me.

Hi Beautiful Ladies

Today I am swimming with Hermione.

Alisha - I agree, pop in and post everyday even if it's "feeling crappy" or "put my shoes on, but took a nap instead."

I have three older brothers too, which is why if someone tries to tickle me, or block my egress, or pokes me in the ribs, or jumps out of a hiding place my response is -punch first ask questions later. I, too, went to a bad school for a couple of years, and learned to refine my tough guy act.

Have you gone to Alkatraz at night! OMG! spooky but fun!

Tricia - all the packing and prep will come together seamlessly, because you already were silently freaking out and thinking it through!

Morningstar - I bargain with myself all of the time, make deals and such. Especially if I am tired or cranky. I'm thinking you're still recovering/repairing from your hike. Interesting about the HRM, very interesting.

Your description of me made me laugh out loud...I sound like a cartoon character with a rapid fire fist block!

Jenn - Hi ! Running and walking is a good combination. you should pick up the book that Morningstar recommended, "No Need for Speed" it'll give you a laugh, and make you feel pretty good about your efforts.

I have to run for now. (well, walk slowly outta here) I'll check back and report on Hermione.

xo:D

A note to Morningstar:

I printed your personal play mixes of CC and must admit to being confused. I'm probably overthinking this, but could you decifer it for me?

First, I have CCP4-13, are there a 1-3?

Next, let's take CCP4 - Does CCP4 mean Vol. 4 and are the challenges from the same Vol. of CC? I'm a little dense, so please be patient with me!:eek:

I hope i'm understanding this right! If not, please feel free to berate me and straighten me out!

Thanks!

Hey Tricia,

You're not dense - I created these for myself and didn't really think about how confusing they would be to someone that didn't know what the hell I was talking about!

The term CCP4 means "Morningstar's CardioCoach Premix #4". They don't refer to the volume number- the voume numbers are found in the first column that sometimes has no title (sorry about that; just realized now that the heading for volume is missing in some of the premixes). There are premixes 1-3, but they were in my email and have since disappeared. The challenges are taken from different volumes, as are the rests.

Let me know if you have any other questions!

Hey everyone,

Tonight I did my first "comprehensive" kettlebell workout - Lauren Brooks again. You know, it was a bit fun, not technically difficult (mostly), and holy Mary Mother of God, did I sweat! Now, it is a very humid day here, so that might have something to do with the sweat factor, but it was quire remarkable, anyway. I didn't burn that many calories for a 40 minute workout, but it was a very interesting, different workout that I look forward to doing again (and I don't expect my strength sessions to be big calories burners during the session anyway). It's very different from dumbbells and barbells, where you try to target in on specific muscles and not use momentum. With kettlebells you seem to deliberately use momentum to complete the movements. I think I'll do Lauren again, then start with AOS.

What are you guys up to tonight?

OMG! I can't believe I didn't see that! Sorry! I guess that answers that! I am dense! It all makes sense now! Thanks! Can't wait to try one of your mixes, but it'll have to wait until I get back from vacation!

Kettlebells sounds fun! I may have to indulge someday!

Me, I did CC Vol. 4. They do get tougher, don't they! I did pretty well with it. Tomorrow looks like rain for us, so I'll probably come home and do a step or circuit workout. We'll see what happens.

Watching Castle right now. I just love that show! Other than that, not much going on today.

Hi Everyone!

Back from swimming. Long day, as getting to the pool takes some time, plus after I picked up ds from school I needed to take him to piano. It is 102 degrees! Tricia, make sure you keep an eye on the weather report, okay? BTW, Vegas is always hot.

I picked up Thai food while I was close to a take out place. ;)

The swim coach had me extend my arm and take her hand, she was on the deck, I was in the pool, and she asked me "what else do you do?" I told her, running and lifting. She said "you need to loosen up your shoulder." {gulp}

She teaches pilates too.

I learned a lot today, she also told me my 'back' was heavy. I did notice a lot of the ladies have a curvature to their spine. Hmmm - I like upright and erect, not curved, so maybe back heavy is a good thing?

The power tower was here when I got home! Now to assemble the sucker.

I am so intrigued by the kettle bell, I am going to look at videos online, youtube, maybe? The functional fitness aspect intrigues me, and it seems like the range of motion might keep the body balanced. It definitely sounds like something to add to a regular rotation, just like circuit training is good to keep things balanced out and keeps the body guessing.

Morningstar, what is AOS? Is this another Kettle bell workout?

Tricia - way to go on Cardio Coach vol 4, I love that workout. I love that it is a middle of the road workout you can always reach for!

Alisha - I saw SEVEN CDF-department of corrections trucks coming up the mountain today. I about had a heart attack. Hey - girl - where is your update? How was the doctor appt?

Jenn - hi!

Ok,off to look at kettle bell videos and empty the dishwasher.:D
