New Runners All Welcome! Sept. 9, 09

Hey ladies! I'd like to join too.

I run a bit - mostly outside and usually with my three dogs. I've done one 1/2 marathon, a handful of 10Ks and some 5Ks but I'm slow. I did 10 minute miles in my 10Ks and 5Ks, closer to 12 minute miles in my 1/2.

Right now I'm mostly doing Cardio Coach (LOVE IT!) although I walk fast on the level 2s instead of running. Otherwise I find that I jog slower than my normal pace during the recoveries and my overall speed on steady state runs suffers. I try to do CC about 2x a week and steady state walks or runs a couple of times a week too.

Other than running, I do kettlebells (AOS Providence) once a week, Cathe 2-3 times a week (weights only, I'm totally incompetent at step/kickboxing/etc) and maybe a little yoga. In the summer and on vacation I do a lot of horseback riding (which I count as exercise:).

This morning I did Pyramid Upper Body, abs and now I'm going to take the dogs out to the orchard and run or walk for 3-4 miles depending on how I feel.

Thanks for the invite and have a great day!
Lisa

Welcome, Lisa! I walk on the CC level 2s too. It sounds like Jane, you and me have similar routines (except Jane swims and I would be torturing the horse if I tried horseback riding again). I'm going to do my first race soon, and Jane's done a ton of 'em. I look to hearing more about your kettlebell training too!

Yeah, injured:(:(:( Ankle stress fracture. I have Morningstar to thank, though, for kicking my ass, repeatedly, which finally got me to stop running on it while I was waiting to see the Orthopedist.

So, everyone is talking running here, and I talk about swimming! {laughing} I take it you were swimming outside?

I live where it is dry and rarely humid, but spent a week in DC and discovered what everyone East of the Rockies has to deal with. YIKES - thick air!

Are you considering a triathlon?

ETA: I meant to ask, Jane, if Pavel is who you would recommend to learn KB technique from? And do you use any dvds?

It's a good thing that you got some help for your ankle. I almost did a 1/2 marathon last year with really bad shin splints on both my legs. It hurt constantly from my ankles to my knees. I had every intention of running it in pain but then decided in the early morning hours NOT to do it. I was afraid I'd end up with stress fractures in both my legs.

I swim outside in a friend's pool. I have 24/7 access to it and it has been nice. I have thought about doing a triathlon but I need to get a bike. I really want to start with a dualthlon first and then maybe a triathlon. There is a great triathlon for beginners at Calloway Gardens. I would start there if I decide to do one.

I learned most of my KB technique from the boot camp I attended but I do have a couple of Pavel's books that I refer to from time to time. I do have all the AOS dvds (Providence, Firepower and Newport), KB Goddess Workout and Keith Weber's Extreme Cardio Kettlebell Workout. I would definitely recommend Pavel for KB technique or any local RKC instructor in your area. Also, Lisa Shaffer (www.lisa-shaffer.com) is another good instructor. I do the majority of my kb workouts in my backyard.

Lisa! Welcome!

I am so glad you are joining us too. Glad to know you are incompetent at Cathe's non-weight lifting dvd's too.{laughing} I just can't seem to 'get it'.

Damn right horseback riding counts as exercise! :D

We'll be leaning on you, Cindi, and Jane for your marathon expertise! YAY!!!!

Oh Jane, that's right, you were doing x many laps for every lap your neighbor did to help motivate her! Now I remember! How nice to have a pool so close by!

OUCH - running on shin splints, you're smart that you didn't run the marathon, and followed your intuition instead. My stubbornness sometimes wins the tussle with my intuition.

Dualathon! Of course their would be such a thing. Now that's more my speed, ditch the bike altogether!

Thanks for the info on where to go for KB technique. I've learned the hard way that trying to figure it out on my own doesn't work, that's the trouble with being self-taught, you have a lousy teacher! {ha!}

I have another kb question, do folks generally do their workout outside so that there is more room above their head in which to swing the kb? (i.e. no ceiling?)

Janis ~ You have a good memory regarding the swimming. I think the most laps I did was 125. Do you swim laps?

To be honest with you, I'm the only one I know that does kb workouts outside. I guess I got used to working outside when I went to the fitness boot camp. Even when it's hot, I don't mind. Traditionally you are supposed to do kettlebell work in your bare feet but I don't do that outside. You can go to www.dragondoor.com to look up instructors in your area, if you are interested.

Cindi ~ Welcome to the group and congrats on your half marathon. Have you seen the documentary "Spirit of the Marathon"? It documents various runners (from professional to first timers) as they prepare for the Chicago Marathon. It was very interesting.

Lisa ~ Welcome! It's nice to meet a fellow kettlebeller as well as someone who is physically challenged when it comes to step. I am a slow runner too!

Jane and Janis ~ Its so nice to know I'm not alone, especially on these boards! I tried taking a couple of step classes and Cathe's Basic Step video but it never got any better. I'm always going left when everyone else is headed right, tripping over the step, whatever.

Lionness ~ Kettlebells on the other hand I can handle. I keep thinking about joining the kettlebell check in but since I only do it once or twice a week, figured maybe it wasn't the best fit. I want to pick up another AOS dvd but I'm not sure which one to get. I was thinking about getting the Brooklyn.

Morningstar ~ What length race are you getting ready for? When is it?

Lisa

Lisa, I also can't do step. AT ALL! Knee repeaters are my best friend.

Which one is AOS Brooklyn? Firepower?

My race is a 5k, on October 18th. I expect to suck, but I'm so thrilled to be doing it!

Hi ladies,

Morningstar your ad worked. :)

I'm so happy we have some more slow runners now I am not alone.:D

Lisa I run outside also. I don't own a treadmill or belong to a gym.

Today my new goodies came. I have to go to the NIKE site and set up my sensor. Tonight I did Amy Bento Kickbox Surge, well most of it. It was so awesome. I loved it. The music rocked, and it was not hard to learn I can't wait to try it again.:)

Hope everyone is having a great night. Gonna go check out the NIKE site.

Hee hee!

I think the tranny hookers might look at me a bit strange, but that's okay. Complimented one today on her 6-inch killer heels as I flew by this morning, and she smiled, although she looked pretty cold.

Bwa ha ha ha ha ha ha ha . . wasn't just for halloween was it?

Hi Jenn

Hi Tricia have fun on vacation.

Welcome Tana.

Jane- its ok if you can’t always get to run. I’m recovering from a twisted ankle and a newly diagnosed IBS. I haven’t done any real workouts in nearly two months. We can do a new thread once a week. When we had only 5 members doing it once a month was ok, but with our campaign to get more members, it makes sense. Oooh, running in a plantation? That sounds so picturesque.

Welcome Cindi.

Welcome Lisa.

I am in Cutten (just East of Eureka) and have found an open wifi. Woo hoo. Can I borrow a cup of internet or what?

Chat later,

Alisha

Girl, you've never been alone; I'm so slow snails are high fiving each other as they pass me. Damn snails! Think they're so fast and all...

Okay, so you guys have forgotten about me already! :(

Good morning Everyone! I'm on East Coast time here in LV and it sucks! Hijacked my SIL's wifi this morning. It's okay, she gave us her password!

Welcome to all our new members! And the ones whose posts I haven't gotten to yet! You have all be very busy already and I've only been gone one day! :p

All this talk about KB has got me wanting some and at least one dvd! Just what I need, more stuff on my WWL (translate: Workout Wish List)! It's already huge! Oh well, gives me something to continue to look forward to!

Janis - have you tried out that Swim Man yet? I'm curious how well it works.

I'm just getting started reading all the posts and still don't know how many pages to go before I catch up on here!

Hey Morningstar! I'd like to hire you as my marketing manager! ;)

Okay, just thought I'd pop a hello in here while I could! Need some breakfast, if my SIL has anything in the house I can eat! Yesterday, it was about 10-12 hours between my meals. That hurt! Made the mistake of not getting anything at the Philly airport before boarding. Should have at least picked up some snacks to carry on and just wasn't thinking. So around 4:30 local time, we grabbed a few tacos (cheeseless for me!) at Taco Bell - yeah, I know - since we didn't what time dinner was going to be. I was relatively good at Margaritaville (okay, not really!). I did have a turkey burger with only lettuce and tomato, but I had the onion rings. Hey, there weren't that many! What REALLY did it was the actual margarita! It was good! It is vacation after all!

It was in the 100s here yesterday and very sunny! I can't remember the last time I saw that! We don't get very sunny weather in RI much! It was interesting, although it was very hot, I could still breathe! I could actually run in this! It's the humidity that makes it difficult as we all know!

Anyway, no running yet. Maybe if we have the energy, we can get a run in while in CA.

Catch you all later! Or, at the very least, on the flip side! ;)

Good morning everyone..

is it okay to sneak back in? I will read through the post alittle later on. Just wanted to post that I did my long run this a.m :) I'm so happy....as well as really tired. Here are the numbers:
8mi @ 11:44
1:33:57
1553 Cals burned.

off to shower then eat something....anything....

Tricia- who forgot? I'm resisting the urge to try the KBs because any time I add weights (not body weight) I put on muscle and I'm like a bull dog short squat and strong. (who let the dogs out!) I try to focus on the yoga (when my ankles are strong and my hands have skin.)

Its nice and cool up here in Eureka. It feels so good after those 103 degree days in Sacramento.

Last night I had the weirdest thing with cramping and felt horrible but with some chamomile tea and 3 ibuprofen I was able to sleep and feel ok now. I'm guessing it was the ice cream cone I had yesterday or the chili burger (not wise but I skipped the bun.) Or it could be my period being very weird and a week early (I am 100 percent certain there is no miscarriage unless they should have named me Mary mother of the second son of G-d.)

My Aunt Peggy is going to teach me how to knit/crochet and give me some yarn. She is very crafty. It helps keep her distracted from the chemo. She only has 5 more treatments. yippee! More than half way through.

I am going to scope out the co-op and the grocery stores for really good meat. I brought my gluten free snacks and my intent is to eat wheat free and be smart about getting enough protein. I wonder if it was the spice in the chili or some wheat to thicken it. Its hard to know. Of course there was wheat in the cone but the doctor told me I wasn't a celiac and the wheat challenge a few weeks ago did not cause this problem. I wonder if it was not having my Kefir. I don't know. This whole thing is so confusing.

Morning everyone! (Whoops! Good afternoon, everyone!)

I just finished my workout. I was supposed to do a cardio/strength circuit, but have really been having issues with my orthostatic hypotension the last couple of days; it kinds of sucks the energy out of you and makes you feel bad, even if it isn't actually harmful. So instead I did one of my own traditional weight lifting full body workouts for just an hour, including warm up, cool down and stretching.

I didn't feel like doing the workout, but I have this thing I do that tricks me into doing strength workouts when I don't feel like it: I just say to myself, "You don't have to do the workout, but just take out the weights. You don't have to do the workout, but just get into your sports bra anyway. You don't have to do the workout, but just bring out the weight bench, ball and iron gym. You don't have to do the workout, but just put on your shoes. You don't have to do the workout, but just pour yourself some water. You don't have to do the workout, but just put on your HRM."

Then after I do all that, I put on a show I like and ignore all the equipment. Then I think, "well, how bad could it be just to do some bicep curls while a good show's on?" Once I do that, it's all over and I'm into the workout. I think it's one of the reasons I haven't really been doing Cathe for a while. it's harder to trick yourself into doing the workout that you hadn't intended to do if you do such a definitive act as putting on the DVD and starting it up. In this case, I had actually loaded Boot Camp already, but didn't end up doing it.

Hey Sydney!

Welcome back (officially!) If you are planning on reading all of our posts, you will definitely need that fuel you are taking in. 1553 calories burned? Is that all? Do you do intervals, or run 8 miles without stopping? Either way, damn, girl, way to go!

Today is a rest day for me. Tomorrow I'm supposed to go rock climbing if the weather is nice so I'm putting off my lower body workout. I paddled whitewater on Monday so its been a weird week for me workout wise - I got in one kb workout, one upper body and a couple of runs. I've done a lot of upper body but my lower body is stiff/sore. Oh well :).

Does anyone else have a hard time taking a rest day? I always feel like I should be doing something even though I know better.

Morningstar - good luck on your 5K. What training plan are you using? The
AOS Brooklyn is the second one that has Beth in it. Honestly, I haven't tried it because I'm not sure if I'll find Beth annoying or not. I'm really picky about the people in my workout videos and the AOS dvds aren't cheap. Loved the comment about the tranny hookers!

Alisha - try the kettlebells! I find that they tone but don't add bulk for me. In fact, they have slimmed out my legs in a way that weight lifting and running alone never have.

Syzygy - I've always hated the way the travelling makes me feel with the weird food and the dehydration! Hope you get back on schedule and feeling good soon.

I have never been religious but I'm becoming quite evangelical about Cathe, Cardio Coach and kettlebells!

Alright, catch up with you all later!
Lisa

Hey Alisha, spices in chili can cause issues with healthy people too- especially if it is a fast food type thing. Another really helpful thing for upset tummies of pretty much all kinds is taking some fresh ginger, grating it, and steeping it in boiling water for about 5 minutes, then drinking the whole thing, including the grated ginger. You can add a little sugar or sugar alternate if you like, but I find it doesn't need it.

They have these specialty knit stores in Toronto where you can buy $100 knit kits of cashmere and patterns for hats and stuff. It's nuts. I bought one of those for my sister and then she immediately got pregnant and hasn't knitted since. Too bad. I picked a kit that would really go well with my colouring, just in case she wanted to give me the finished product for Christmas! It really was gorgeous yarn.
