New Runners All Welcome! Sept. 9, 09

Welcome back, Jane!

If it helps, sometimes we don't even talk about running for days! We check-in on EVERYTHING, but running is what we hang our hat on. Is your run tomorrow a race or a fun run for yourself?

As for starting a new thread regularly, we could give it a shot, but we haven't been too good with that in the past! Monthly threads are more our speed (which isn't to say that this is a good thing!)

Oops...I should have mentioned it was a 5K race. I'm really looking forward to it because it's in a Plantation and not running around neighborhoods.

I love racing and started running in late 2007 in hopes of doing a 10K race in 2008. I got hooked and ended up doing 20 races last year. I did a bunch of 5Ks, a 8K, 10K, 13K and 15K. I wanted to finish the year with a half marathon under my belt but got injured and didn't do it. I like the longer races better so when my situation changes, I want to start doing 10Ks so that my base runs are there.

I do lots of cross training with swimming, kettlebell/circuits and weight training. Last night I did a workout that combined kettlebells and running. I felt really good!

Today is a rest day.

Ooooh, I'm excited about just about everything you are doing! I'm a new runner and I am doing my first 5k race in about 3 weeks, and I'm very nervous about the actual logistics of the race- how to avoid tripping on people, the protocols, that kind of thing. I just started doing kettlebells, and I also weight train, both traditional and circuits. I'm curious about how you combined KBs and running- was it in a gym?

I love running and want to do so many races and it's just depresses me sometimes so talking about running sometimes hurts. Does that make sense?

I still run about 2 or 3 times a week and am doing a 5K tomorrow morning in a Plantation. I'm really looking forward to it. It is a hilly course and we will be running on pea gravel, grass, dirt, red-clay (Georgia) and asphalt.

I will do my best to check in every day because I do love running.

Can I make a request though? Is it possible to have a thread started either daily or weekly?

Thanks! I'm glad to be back.

Welcome back Jane!

I hear you on the loving to run, and it hurting to talk about it ! I haven't run in 6 weeks!

Good luck on your 5k, the Plantation sounds lovely! Is running in Georgia humidity half the battle?

First thing I saw on the forum this morning was Morningstar's ad. Hilarious! I don't check Cathe's forums very often, but I am really glad I did this morning. Very amusing! Almost makes me want to dust off my treadmill and charge up the mp3 player for a round with Coach Sean. = )

Tana

Welcome Tana!

Our Morningstar IS hilarious! Run the dust off your treadmill, and join us. When I am running, I treadmill run too.

Dibs on the swimming. :D

I'm so excited for you! I have wonderful memories of my first 5K! Of course in the beginning of the race I was thinking why am I doing this? But once you cross the finish line all your doubts will fade away.

I have done big and small races. The biggest being 2000+ at the Tower of Terror 13K in Disney to a local race that had 45 people!! I love smaller races better even though there may be a chance I could place last!! Although that has never happened yet!!! Let me know your questions and I will answer them the best I can. I'm not a fast runner so I usually tend to stay toward the back of the pack and let the faster runners take off.

No gym for me. I workout mainly at home in my backyard. I attended a fitness boot camp a couple of years ago where I learned about kettlebells and they often combined kettlebell drills with running. I love combining running with other exercises because it really builds your endurance. At the boot camp I attended there was a woman who ran and she told me that her race times were getting better due to the workouts we were doing at boot camp.

Here are 2 examples of running/kettlebell workouts that I have done. I did the first one below last night.

2 Rounds
5 Thrusters (squat to a press) (R) – run 200 meters
5 Thrusters (L) – run 200 meters
10 High Pulls (R) – run 200 meters
10 High Pulls (L) – run 200 meters
15 Swings – (R) – run 2 suicide sprints
15 Swings – (L) – run 2 suicide sprints
.

4 Rounds
400m Run
Kettlebell Complex (20 kettlebell swings, 15 kettlebell cleans, 10 kettlebell squats, 5 Kettlebell presses)

These are fun workouts!! You can make up any combination of distance and kettlebell drills. They really amp up your workouts.

HTH,

Jane, that really sounds like "fun" (we live in an alternate reality universe where brutal workouts are enjoyed with relish!) Unfortunately, I don't think I can get 200m out of my 485 square foot condo where I do my kettlebell workouts!

I enjoy many aspects of KBs, but I haven't figured out how to not have the back of my forearm hurting because of the KB hitting it during cleans, even though I wear wrist protectors. Any suggestions?

Janis ~ Sorry to hear that you haven't run in a while! Are you injured? I read back through a couple of posts and noticed that you swim. I did lots of swimming this summer. I loved it! I will miss it now that it's getting cooler out.

Yes, running in Georgia humidity is half the battle!! There aren't too many races around here in August but you get used to it. I'd rather run in hot weather than cold weather. I can't stand all that nose dripping! :p

I guess I live in an alternate reality universe! LOL! It's a good place to be most of the time.

I have struggled with cleans as well. You need to make sure that the bell remains close to your body on the swing up. The smashing your forearm means that you are not controlling the bell correctly. So make sure that you have control. Here is a good drill that I got from Pavel's books. Do the movement next to a wall (preferably a wall that you don't want to dent). Face the wall, your distance from it being around or a little more than arms reach. Now do a clean. The bell should remain close enough to your body that it doesn't destroy your wall. That's your incentive!!! Keep your elbows tucked into your body - don't flare them out.

Let me know how it goes.

Can I join you ladies? I saw Morningstar's ad today. :)

I just finished my second half-marathon about 3 weeks ago and am just running for fun right now. I am planning a marathon May 1 so I'll start that program at the beginning of the year.

I was checking in with a running thread on the FIRM forum but it has really died down and I want to talk to more runners!

I am also checking in with the 10# challenge group - hence my ticker.

Of course you can join us! I am so impressed that you run half-marathons. it's on my to-do list for the next few years. I'd love to hear about your experience with the races.

Great training tip! I'll give it a go, although all things considered, I'd rather break my wall than my arm.

Hi Cindi!

Welcome, I am glad you are joining us! half marathon is on my to-do list too! I am anxious to get back at it, and when I do I'll need a return to running training plan to keep me on track. Where/what program do you follow to prepare for a 1/2 or full marathon?

:D

Yeah, injured:(:(:( Ankle stress fracture. I have Morningstar to thank, though, for kicking my ass, repeatedly, which finally got me to stop running on it while I was waiting to see the Orthopedist.

So, everyone is talking running here, and I talk about swimming! {laughing} I take it you were swimming outside?

I live where it is dry and rarely humid, but spent a week in DC and discovered what everyone East of the Rockies has to deal with. YIKES - thick air!

Are you considering a triathlon?

ETA: I meant to ask, Jane, if Pavel is who you would recommend to learn KB technique from? And do you use any dvds?

When I saw sprints and kbs, I thought for sure you'd be all over it like white on rice! Take those babies outside girl, you could do your run -with-the -drunks and scare the beejeeesus out of the 4:30am crowd!
:D

(check out the count, and I'm not talking about grilled vampires!):D

Hey everyone (at least, those of you that have not abandoned us for carefree Vegas and stick horses),

{laughing}

. The whole thing was 11.6k and it was fine. My right knee hurt a bit near the end, and my right quad is definitely not happy, but the running intervals totalled 56 minutes- that ain't bad! Who cares if I didn't do it without walking? The whole workout took about 90 minutes with warm up, cool down and stretch.

Not too shabby! 7.2 miles! Hey, you're ready to do the Bay To Breakers.:D Extra credit points for doing the stretching! What's up with the quad and the knee? Are the PT exercises helping?

I had some chocolate milk for recovery afterwards; I'm trying to avoid another low blood sugar day like yesterday.

I think my low energy was from waiting too long to eat also. I seem to have lost my appetite since I have not been burning major k's.

Lower body work for me today. I'm craving vigorous exercise though, and it's driving me nuts!

I can truly say that not having an appetite is not an issue for me! That was what was weird, I had been ravenous all day and eating healthy all day, and my blood sugar still dropped like a stone.

I have to admit, I didn't go to the CAT (certified athletic therapist), since my issue with my anterior rotated pelvis seemed to resolve itself on its own (and I just didn't feel like going on the day of my appointment). I think the quad and knee is just from running farily intensely two days in a row, with an evening of kettlebells in between the runs. And Janis, sweetie, I ALWAYS stretch after running! :D

Hee hee!

I think the tranny hookers might look at me a bit strange, but that's okay. Complimented one today on her 6-inch killer heels as I flew by this morning, and she smiled, although she looked pretty cold.
